1 1 Volume 9 Issue 3 RODS & RELICS CAR CLUB NEWSLETTER March 2017 The Rods & Relics Car Club of Lincoln Hills is a nonprofit organization formed by individuals with an interest in: The restoration, preservation and enjoyment of collector vehicles such as Original, Antiques, Classics, Street Rods, Muscle Cars, Special Interest, Modified, and other American or American powered and 1975 or older. We use this strong interest to facilitate fundraising and community service to nonprofit organizations and people in need. Rods & Relics meet every 3rd Thursday of each month at 6:30 PM at Turkey Creek 1525 Highway 193 Lincoln Everyone Welcome PRESIDENT S MESSAGE ~ Rich Ragan A new meeting site was selected at the February General Business Meeting. Members present, along with four absentee votes, selected Turkey Creek in Lincoln. The General Business Meeting on March 16 will be held there. Plan to join us in a new, casual, relaxing setting. Location: 1525 Highway 193 on the east side of Lincoln. (Across the street from the Ride to Walk facility.) Place your food order at the counter and your food will be brought to you. Dinner is available from 4:45 p.m. on. A full bar is offered. The Business Meeting will start at 6:15 p.m. The following revision to our By-Laws was approved: Anyone running for a position on the Board of Directors must be a member in good standing. Only the Office of President requires a member to have been a member at least the full year preceding the election. The following individuals were elected to your Board of Directors and will participate in a Transition Meeting Monday, March 13. They take office effective April 1st: Vice President: Ray Geiger one-year term (filling George Funk s position.) Treasurer: George Funk two-year term. Activities Director: Ed McVey two-year term. Membership Director: Kent Parsell two-year term. Member-at-Large: Mike Carvidi two-year term. CONGRATULATIONS to all of you and best wishes for continued success! Welcome to Bud Vancott, a new member! He has a 1972 Chevy-powered 240Z. Our Club now has 58 members! Congratulations to Club members George Funk and Ray Geiger for winning trophies at the recent Sacramento Autorama Butch Gardner Clubhouse Award Ceremony. Go in your garage and uncover that Special Vehicle! It is time to get ready for the upcoming Car Show circuit! Ed McVey, our new Activities Director, will be identifying many options for you to pick from. Plan to join in enjoy the ride and the camaraderie we always have a good time! 2 2 Club Activities ~ Ray Geiger Sacramento Autorama The Sacramento Autorama at Cal Expo was February 17-19, Fortunately, the rain was not as bad as anticipated. While it had an adverse effect on the Saturday and Sunday Drive-In portion of the show, it did not seem to cut down on show attendance. Three of our members, Tom Ware, George Funk and I represented Rods & Relics in the Butch Gardner Clubhouse. We got lucky and it was not raining when we drove over to Cal Expo on Wednesday to enter our cars. There were a total of 240 cars in the Clubhouse representing 26 clubs. The set up went smoothly, all 240 cars were in their display spaces within 45 minutes. Show participants had passes for Wednesday and Thursday for setup and two show passes each for Friday through Sunday. Cars in the Clubhouse do not compete for the awards given out by the Autorama but a number of the clubs give out awards to cars in the Clubhouse. Rods & Relics members attending the Autorama voted for our two favorite cars. It was obvious that there were a number of great cars in the Clubhouse by the large number of cars that received one or more votes. In the end we picked a 1933 Ford three window coupe as the Hottest Hot Rod and a 48 Packard Woody as the Coolest Classic/Custom. Out of the 22 awards given out at the award ceremony Saturday evening, Rods & Relics members cars won two of them. George Funk s Graham won the award given out by the Burgiemen and I won one presented by the Butch Gardner Clubhouse. It was a fun weekend. We shared our display space with Marvin Hassenplug and his 1934 pick-up. We had a chance to see a lot of nice cars and talk with old friends and meet some new ones as well. When it was time to drive home the weather and roads were clear. I hope next year we can get more members to represent Rods & Relics in the Clubhouse.

3 3 THE GRAND NATIONAL ROADSTER SHOW 2017 by Ed McVey On Thursday morning January 26 th Barney Oldfield pulled into my driveway in his midnight blue MOPAR precisely at 7:35 A.M. as he had foretold me, and advised me to be ready to motate. I threw my bag in the trunk, climbed into the back and fastened my seat belt, and held on for dear life as ole Barney put the petal to the metal. With Rich Ragan as his navigator ole Barney made good time heading south on Highway 99 with a few stops along the way. The first one was a pit stop at a McDonald's for coffee and back on the road. A few hours later a lunch stop at Marie Callender's in Bakersfield, and on to Sylmar and a stop at the Nethercutt Museum. The Nethercutt Museum has over 50 Antique, black Iron, & Classic Automobiles on display, together with the world's finest assemblage of Mechanical Musical Instruments. Most of the cars are pre 1960 and mostly stock, but are worth the price of admission, being it don't cost you nuffin. Back on the road and on to Ontario where we will be camping out at the LaQuinta Inn for three nights as we take in the Roadster Show held at the Fairplex in Pomona. After checking in, the three amigos, that's Ray Geiger, Rich Ragan, & myself, Brad Pitt head out for dinner at the local Spaghetti Factory and call it a night, but not before I checked in with Julie. Friday AM we headed to the fairgrounds and hit the pavement each going our separate way. I mostly took in the eight large halls this day, collected over a dozen new parts catalogs from the many vendors that lined the walls of the halls. The halls were filled mostly with high-end vehicles, the one's that you trailer, and are out of our reach $$$$$. That night we ate at El Torito, and called it a night, but again, not before I checked in with Julie. Saturday we hit the pavement a little bit earlier then Friday and again we split up and went our separate ways. The weather was perfect today as I strolled around the grounds and took in maybe 300 cars all together. These were about like the cars you would see at our car show. The one thing that came to mind was, why do they call it the The Grand National Roadster Show when there really ain't no more roadsters there than you see at a regular car show like ours? Makes you wonder...we met up late in the afternoon and headed back to the hotel. Later we headed out to dinner at T.G.I.F. Called it a night and I crawled into bed, but again, checking in with Julie first. Sunday morning we loaded up the Blue Bomber and the three of us headed north on ole highway 99 and home, but not before we stopped for lunch at another Marie Callender's. I gotta say that Ray knows where all the good eating places are along 99. As we headed home we traded car stories and talked about the cars that we saw. Each one of us had a dozen or so that we would like to have. Oh well, I've been dreaming of street rods, & customs long before I started dreaming of girls.

4 4 RODS & RELICS CAR CLUB GENERAL BUSINESS MEETING MINUTES FEBRUARY 16, 2017 STRIKES 5681 LONETREE BLVD ROCKLIN PRESIDENT RICH RAGAN Rich called the meeting to order at 6:15 pm, welcomed everyone and then asked for the Secretary s Report. SECRETARY S REPORT ED BRANCO Ed asked for a motion to approve the January Meeting Minutes located in the Newsletter on our web site. Merrill Conley so moved and George Funk seconded. Secretary s Report was approved. TREASURER S REPORT CRAIG KIRKPATRICK Craig was not in attendance. George Funk filled in and reported the February, 2017 month and year-to-date activity for both the Club and Car Show accounts. We have $975 in Club Merchandise. Contributions for the 2017 year are $550. Contributions to date are $130,321. George asked for a motion to approve the Treasurer s Report. Julie McVey so moved and Charles Barnhart seconded. Motion was approved. ACTIVITIES REPORT RAY GEIGER Ray reported on the following shows: (Flyers are in the back of the room) Feel Good Shows: July Auburn Oaks Care Center in Auburn Club Promoted Shows: None Other shows: February 17-19, 2017 Sacramento Autorama Two awards, Coolest Classic or Custom Car and Hottest Hot Rod. Ray advised that ACCC will try to amend SB1 and HB1 to exempt classic cars if they can get the support of car clubs. He asked members to agree to contact our state legislators if such an amendment is proposed. Twenty five members said they would. CAR SHOW REPORT Kent reported the following: Thanks to Alan Taylor for all he has done for us. Forms are out and coming back in. Talking to the City on the sanitation. Setting up a rain date. 22 Cars are now registered. Things are going well. Rich Ragan reported that the Thunder Valley s Insurance Certificate is in. VICE PRESIDENT S REPORT GEORGE FUNK George reported that the Premier Mobile Tire Company will have a speaker at our General Business meeting when the weather is better. George would like to see more member participation at the Autorama in the future. MEMBERSHIP REPORT NORM PENRICE Norm reported that there was a third meeting prospective member present, Bud Vancott, with his 1972 powered 240 Z. Bud was voted on and approved for Membership. Second meeting prospective member Wayne Sloan with his 1917 Oldsmobile V8 was in attendance. First meeting prospective member Glenn Vineyard was also in attendance. Norm made sure everyone signed in. MEMBER AT LARGE REPORT ED MCVEY Ed reported that he brought in Club merchandise for sale. He is working on purchasing tee shirts for the Car Show. OLD BUSINESS The proposed By-Laws change to remove the one year requirement for members to run for a Board position was read for the second time. Ray Geiger so moved and Ken Garino seconded. The motion was approved. Dan Larsen is ordering the Club Name Badges. Future General Business Meeting sites were discussed and voted on as follows:

NEW BUSINESS Board elections; Since we only have one person running for each office, Rich Ragan asked for a motion to suspend the formal ballot and elect the slate of officers by acclamation. Craig Fraser so moved and Murrill Conley seconded. Motion was approved. Candidates for offices and their terms are: Vice President Ray Geiger 1 Year term Treasurer George Funk 2 Year term Activities Ed McVey 2 Year term Membership Kent Parsell 2 Year term Member-at-Large Mike Carvidi 2 Year term President Rich Ragan and Secretary Ed Branco have 1 year left on their terms. With no further business to discuss, Rich Ragan asked for a motion to adjourn. A motion was made, seconded and approved. The meeting adjourned at 7:15 pm.
