1 Volume 9 Issue 10 RODS & RELICS CAR CLUB NEWSLETTER The Rods & Relics Car Club of Lincoln Hills is a nonprofit organization formed by individuals with an interest in: The restoration, preservation and enjoyment of collector vehicles such as Original, Antiques, Classics, Street Rods, Muscle Cars, Special Interest, Modified, and other American or American powered and 1975 or older. We use this strong interest to facilitate fundraising and community service to nonprofit organizations and people in need. October 2017 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE ~ Rich Ragan September saw a rush of activities for Club members to participate in: Friday the 8th and Saturday, the 9th, I joined Ray Geiger, George Funk, and Larry Hickerson as we moved racks of books before and after the Book Sale held by the Friends of the Lincoln Library. Sunday, the 17th five Club members attended the Motor Madness Show in Rocklin. Four members brought home nice trophies! (See the article) Friday, the 22nd, saw a large turnout at the Lincoln Meadows Care Center. We relaxed, visited with residents, had lunch and listened to the sounds of Professor Rockola. Saturday, the 23rd, 14 Club members traveled to Mel s Drive-In in Auburn. The Car Show featured 215 vehicles. Our Club won the Club Participation Award and two of our members also won awards! (See the article) All in all, it was a most rewarding time of the year! My congratulations to all who participated and to the winners! You make our Club proud! Rods & Relics meet every 3rd Thursday of each month at 6:00 PM at Turkey Creek Golf Club 1525 Highway 193 Lincoln Everyone Welcome Rods & Relics of Lincoln Hills P.O. Box 93 Lincoln CA The General Business Meeting held on September 21 saw the following six organizations make presentations for the honor of being selected for a portion of our 2018 Car Show proceeds: Ride To Walk, National Down Syndrome Coalition, Light House Counseling, RRUFF Healing Heroes, Assistance League of Greater Placer, and the Lincoln Theatre Group. Voting was held and the winners were Ride To Walk, RRUFF Healing Heroes, and National Down Syndrome Coalition. My congratulations to the winners. In addition, the Fall Car Show slowdown is evident. There are only two Club promoted events scheduled in October: the OctoberFest Car Show and Toy Run in Folsom at the Palladio on Saturday, the 7th and the Sierra Regency Care Facility in Roseville on Thursday, the 12th.
2 Swabbies Run ~ September 20th ~ Alan Taylor Last Wednesday, September 20th. some of us woke up to clouds. Well, I was worried! When I picked this date earlier the weather forecast was looking good for this rod run. It still showed no rain but I wanted all sunshine. I headed over to our meeting place. This was a record club turnout for the run to Swabbies. We had 14 cars and would have had 15 but Brad Pitt's Studdy was under the weather. Swabbies is a cool dive bar right on the river off of the Garden Highway. We took a casual drive over. It was a smooth ride and nice to see several newer members who had never been to this cool place. Yes, it has a dirt parking lot, but cars do clean up and it was fine. Even the Righetti's brought their beautiful Merc and parked on the dirt. A lot of you know how I feel: if you got'em, you got a drive em. Well, back to the weather. By some kind of magic, the skies were sunny at Swabbies. We had a great lunch. Great fish tacos and nice discussions as we gazed out on the river. All in all a great day, no car breakdowns and a nice easy ride home as well. For me, it doesn't get much better than driving a bunch of old cars on a car run. It beats going to a car show and just sitting by your car. Hopefully we can have several more runs next year. I want to thank everyone who participated and helped make it a great run in the sun.
3 RODS & RELICS CAR CLUB GENERAL BUSINESS MEETING MINUTES SEPTEMBER 21, 2017 TURKEY CREEK GOLF COURSE HIGHWAY 193, LINCOLN This meeting was preceded by presentations for donations from the following charities: Ride to Walk The Light House Counseling The National Down Syndrome Coalition Assistance League of Greater Placer RRUFF Lincoln Theatre Company PRESIDENT RICH RAGAN Rich called the meeting to order at 7:10 pm, welcomed everyone and then asked for the Secretary s Report. SECRETARY S REPORT ED BRANCO Ed asked for a motion to approve the August Meeting Minutes located in the Newsletter on our web site. Clark Smith so moved and Dennis Malone seconded. Secretary s Report was approved. TREASURER S REPORT GEORGE FUNK George reported the September 2017 month and year-to-date activity and balances for both the Club and Car Show accounts. We have $813 in Club Merchandise. Contributions to date are $148,316. George asked for a motion to approve the Treasurer s Report. Ray Geiger so moved and Craig Kirkpatrick seconded. Motion was approved. ACTIVITIES REPORT ED McVEY Ed reported on the following shows: (Flyers are in the front of the room) Feel Good Shows: September 22 Lincoln Meadows in Lincoln October 12 Sierra Regency in Roseville Club Promoted Shows: September 23 Mels American Graffiti Car Show in Auburn October 7 OctoberfestCar Show and Toy Run in Folsom Other Shows: October 28 WCRA October s Best Show at All American Speedway in Roseville October 29 Arbuckle Car Show in Arbuckle November 4 Cars for Kids Car Show in Citrus Heights November 5 Toy Run Burger Junction in Sacramento November 11, 12 & 13 Goodguys Get-Together February 16, 17, 18 Sacramento Autorama Alan Taylor will head up the Feel Good Shows VICE PRESIDENT S REPORT RAY GEIGER Ray reported that he hopes to have Mike Poteet, Mike s Auto Classics in Loomis. As our speaker for October and someone representing Hagerty Insurance at our November meeting. Ray also discussed the status of the initiative to repeal SB1: the gas tax and increased registration that will take effect later this year. MEMBERSHIP REPORT JUDY REZENDES Judy reported that 59 members have paid their dues and 1 more has said he will pay soon. First meeting prospective members: Howard Stagg (no car yet but will buy one). Second meeting prospective members: Dan Lombard with his 1967 Camaro was present. Ken & Tara Nelson with their 1930 Ford Model A were not present. Landon Schadel with his 1968 Pontiac GTO and a 68 Mercury Cougar. Jarred Hawkins with his 1939 Chevy Coupe was present. Third meeting prospective member Chuck Ellis was not present. MEMBER AT LARGE REPORT MIKE CARVIDI Mike reported that John Cunningham s Caught in the Headlights story is in the September Newsletter. Howard Stubblefield may be next. Mike and Ed McVey will be working on updating our car pictures on the web-site. OLD BUSINESS RICH RAGAN - Rich reported that he and Ray Geiger will be working with the Platinum Sponsors. Rich has confirmed that the June 2, 2018 Car Show is on the City s calendar. Craig Jones was present and is getting around with a boot on his foot. Tom Kirkbride had a Stent put in his esophagus and is adapting to it.
4.NEW BUSINESS RICH RAGAN Christmas Event plans for December 3 are being worked on. It will be held at the Orchard Creek Del Webb Ballroom. More details will follow. Results of the voting for next year s Car Show proceeds are in: Ride to Walk, RRUFF Healing Heroes and National Down Syndrome Coalition. With no further business to discuss, Rich Ragan asked for a motion to adjourn. A motion was made, seconded and approved. The meeting adjourned at 7:40 PM. Respectfully submitted Ed Branco, Secretary Mel s American Graffiti Car Show ~ September 23rd ~ George Funk Well I better get started writing this show up tonight before I forget what happened. After 4 bourbon and cokes, well, I better get started. What a great morning to go to a car show. It was 50 degrees at 6:00 AM in the morning. We had 11 members start out from Target at 7:00 AM sharp and we all arrived safely. There was a total of 200 plus cars. During the morning we had 3 additional members arrive for a total of 14. This was good enough for Rods & Relics to win the Club Participation Award. Two of our members also won awards, Bud Van Cott, with his Chevy powered 240Z won Fab Foreign and Ken Bauer with his 37 Chevy won Sleek Sedan. The award categories were very strange. Unfortunately, Ed McVey, with his 53 Studebaker and I, with my 41 Graham, did not win awards. My favorite car was a 1971 VW Karmann Gia with a Chrysler Hemi. How they got that in there is amazing. Our Club participated in the poker walk as station # 3. It was managed by Ray Geiger, Clark Smith and Terri Stubblefield. This show has one event that I wish our Car Show could do. They have teams that compete in car part games, as trying to throw hupcaps through a basketball net and pistons into an oil pan. One new twist was the Car Hop service to our cars. This was very cool and so were the gals bringing the food. Well, the hour is late. Great show and hope all can attend this annual show next year. Lincoln Meadows ~ September 22 ~ Ed McVey I was the point person for this show, minus the 53 Stude, oh well, no one in the club really believe I actually own one, or that Studebaker actually made such a vehicle. The Monday before the Friday show, Sherry, The Activities Director asked me for a head count, told her I would give her one on Wednesday, so on Wednesday I had eight let me know that they were going, I ed Sherry & told her I had sixteen lined up so far, sixteen sounded better than eight. Well you guys came through, we had sixteen cars there, not all were club members but I didn't care, and Sherry was pleased with the turnout. The weather was great, the food was great, I especially liked the shaved ice cups with your choice of topping. It was good to see so many people looking at the cars & R&R Club Members interacting with them. Talked to Sherry a few days later & she is looking forward to having us back again next year.
5 Caught in the Headlights: Howard & Terri Stubblefield Terri & I moved to SCLH last November after 30 years in Redding where I retired as a Senior Vice President with Morgan Stanley. Our interest in a street rod developed when I found Terri was not as enthused with my first Harley as we still had two fairly young boys at the time. A friend suggested a street rod just might be a more family friendly idea and he was right. Off to the Good Guys August show in Pleasanton and came home with our 40 Ford 2 dr sedan, that was in We have owned the car a long time but have used it to enjoy rodding more since we moved here than in all the time in Redding! We love Rods & Relics as it is a well run club with great leadership and are thrilled to be included. A month before we moved here the original engine blew about 12 miles from our house; we were returning from a car show in Fortuna where we had the fun of meeting our Vice President Ray and learning all about the club and Sun City. As a result, our car now has a new factory built Chevy 350 performance long block and all the goodies that go with that to the new exhaust tips, most from Summit Racing. Once we got here some follow up changes were performed at Tim's Hot Rods in Rio Linda; can't say enough about Tim and the work he did, a great guy! Well folks, that's our story and we're sticking to it! Cheers, Howard & Terri Stubblefield Motor Madness ~ September 17th ~ Rich Ragan Sunday, September 17, found Club members going to the Motor Madness Show in Rocklin. Curt and Tina Bartley led the way in their Super-charged '68 Chevy Camaro! He had won the Best Of Show last year so he was exempt from entering his car this year. Four Club members joined him... and we all came home with trophies! Fred Krohn with his '39 Ford Pick-up, won the 1st Place 1930's Stock Award and the Keep On Trucking WOW Award. Clark Smith with his '65 Ford Falcon Convertible/Surf Board, won the Surf's Up Award. Tom Ware with his '62 Corvette, won the Warrior's Every Man Matters Award. Rich Ragan with his '23 T-Bucket won the 1st Place 1920's Modified Award. All in all, it was an incredible day for the Club and its members! Congratulations everyone!
