1 2013 PKA NEWS LETTER February 21,2013 This Year s Newsletter is of a very simple format as we are getting pressed for time to get it out to our membership. Most of the articles will be brief and to the point as my typing skills are a bit rusty and we have a lot of information to share with everyone. So take a couple of minutes to check out what is all happening this year at PKA. The OSKCS will be a 10 race schedule ran at both Pat s Acres Racing Complex and at PKA s newly remodeled MAC Track Located in McMinnville Or. JG Francis along with KID KART Coach Jud Whitcher, Dwight Besuyen,John Shearer and other PKA members have been busy manning the PKA booth at the Portland Auto Show in January. The PKA crew will also attend the Portland Roaster Show March 15-17, and Portland Swap Meet April 5-7. We have been seeing results of our exposure at the shows and can use your help with manning the booths. If you would like to attend any of the shows and give a hand please contact JG Francis at PKA to host Mychron Seminar June 1 st JG Francis Promotions chair is proud to announce that PKA will be hosting a Mychron Seminar by Roger Caddell from Aim Sports. The Seminar will be held on Saturday June 1 st at the Competition Motors Corp. Tigard, OR Cost is $25.00 pre registration and $30.00 at the door to cover the costs of the seminar and will include lunch and refreshments. The class will be limited to the first 35 registers. Bring your lap tops and your karts with your Mychron 3 and 4 s ready to go. Roger will be staying overnight and will attend the OSKCS Race at the MAC Track on Sunday June 2 nd to give additional hands on support for the races. For more information call JG Francis at Or call Don Holmboe at CMC to reserve your spot. Annual PKA Swap Meet just around the Corner That s right the annual PKA Swap Meet is less than 2 weeks away. The Swap Meet will be held Saturday March 2 at CMC 9399 SW Tigard Street in Tigard, OR Shark Shifter is also one of the Swap meet Sponsors. There is no fee for a table but you should give Don a call to get a spot at The Swap Meet starts at 9:00 AM and will go till middle of afternoon. PKA board members will be on hand to help renew memberships and sign new memberships. It PKA Annual Membership Drive 2013 season is rapidly approaching and now is the time to take advantage of the PKA membership incentives. Join PKA before March 3 and you will receive a reserved pit spot at the MAC Track for the 2013 racing season. Go to to download the current membership forms. 3 MAC Track Spring Cleaning It s starting to feel like Spring, the race season is fast approaching and that means once again it is time for our annual track work party and clean-up. We had a really good effort last year and the effort really showed the rest of the year! With the new paving complete and all that we have to look forward to this year the track clean-up will be more important than ever! Unlike last year when we had so much back breaking work to do this year will be more of the fun stuff where we can start to really make the track shine. I think we will try to organize some special projects that people can commit to so that we make the best use of your skills or equipment. Don t worry, if you don t have any special skills there will still be a need for strong backs and weak minds! Look for more news on the web site in the weeks ahead. Gregg Wick: (503) greggwick519@frontier.com. Changes in 2013 Sprint Gold Cup As most all have heard the 2013 IKF region 6 Gold Cup Sprint Series will have some changes. The Gold Cup is not going away and there will be a full contingent of Rotax, 2 cycle, 4 cycle as well as 3 new shifter classes added to the series. Bill Hettick and the BAM Racing grew will continue to officiate, tech, score, and provide registration services for the series as in the past. PKA looks forward in hosting this year s Gold Cup event June 28-30, For more information go to Shilo Inns offers discount rates for PKA events Shilo Inns once again will offer discounted rates for the all of the Gold Cup races this year as well at the for the IKF4 Cycle Grand Nationals the IKF Road Race Grand Nationals, the Vintage Kart weekend and for all PKA club races at PIR and at the MAC Track. Rates at the Shilo Inns at Newberg are $77.00 per night plus tax over $35.00 savings per night. Go to or call or to make your reservations for the Gold Cup and the Grand Nationals now. John Sullivan will host Rose Cup Exhibition Race Annual PKA Night Race Changes While the PKA night race is a highlight of the season for all of our racers it has become a financial burden for the club to maintain. So with that the PKA board has made some changes to the Night Race. There will still be one this year. However the course will be the short track. This is to be able to afford the cost of the light stations. Light stations cost the club approx. $ each unit by the time of the rental, delivery, insurance, and fuel charges associated with each unit. PKA would like to use the whole track and would need approx. 6 additional light stations to be able to run the whole track. If there is sponsorship for the additional 6 units at $ we will run the whole track. If you would like to sponsor a light station for the night race please contact a PKA board member and we will be happy to post the sponsorship to brings us that much closer to a full track for the night race for PKA member John Sullivan is hosting an Exhibition race at this year s Portland Rose Festival. If you would like to participate and race at Portland International Raceway June please give John a call at It is a great way to represent PKA and show the sport of Karting to the all of the spectators at the Rose Cup. MG Tires to Sponsor 2013 IKF Region 6 Gold Cup Road Race series MG Tires will once again sponsor 3 sets of MG Tires at each of the IKF region 6 Gold Cup Road Races this year. As like last year all drivers who run MG tires on their kart and have a MG Tire Sticker on the kart and check the I am running MG s on the registration form will be eligible for the drawing of the free sets of tires. Limit to one set of tires per driver per year. Drivers have found that the MG s are a great tire with great wear characteristics and Company Support. 4 First IKF Region 6 Gold Cup Road Race May 4 th The first IKF Region 6 gold Cup Road Race is fast approaching. The Race will be held at Oregon Raceway Park in Grass Valley, OR. The ORP track is becoming one of the favorite tracks for the karters offering many challenges for even the most skilled drivers but is also a forgiving track for the newer racer. This is the second year that PKA will be hosting the race at ORP and we are looking forward to see all of our Northwest and California racers to start the season off Saturday May 4 th. Online registration will be open very soon. There will be a PKA representative at the Track on Friday afternoon to help with registration and membership. For those racers that feel the need for a practice day to shake the cobwebs out for the new season. Have no worries as John Sullivan will be hosting a full practice day at ORP Friday Mary 3 rd details of times and prices will be coming shortly. For more information on the Friday Practice Day give John Sullivan a call at PKA to Host Vintage Kart Weekend The History makers of the Sport of Karting will be at the MAC Track July for a Vintage Kart Weekend. Karters from all along the west coast will be inattendence and will be showing off the karts that got the sport start. The great thing about these original karts is that they still drive them. The event will start on Friday July 12 all day. Saturday there will be a barbeque and displays and some local tours with on track action starting at approx. 5 PM going to till dusk. The great thing about the NW sun doesn t go down til after 9PM so there will be lots of karting going Saturday evening. Followed a full day on Sunday July 14 th. For more information on vintage karts and vintage events go to PKA to host 2 IKF Grand Nationals in 2013 Portland Karting Association will be hosting 2013 IKF 4 Cycle Sprint Grand Nationals July and the 2013 IKF Road Race Grand Nationals September The PKA Membership and Board of Directors are in active preparations to pull the two events off for The 4 Cycle Grands Will be held at PAK s MAC Track and the Road Race Grands Will be held at Portland International Raceway. As always the Club can use you your help in securing sponsors and volunteers to make the events happen flawlessly. It is an opportunity for the club and its members to welcome karters from all across the county show our pride in our tracks and facilities. There is a special section on the PKA website for more information on the Grand Nationals. A Thank You and a Request from the PKA Board The PKA BoD would like to take this time to thank all of it members, volunteers supporters, and sponsors who make this club happen. Without you and your dedication to the sport and the club we would not have a great place like The MAC Track to race at. It is with your constant support and help and pride of ownership that we continue to survive, strive and grow. As the president of the club I would like to say thank you to you the members for your hard work and diligence in seeing the dream of our club and members to continue to support the sport of Karting that we all passionately love. So with that, I am asking for your help in the upcoming season. As you can see PKA has a lot of events and projects going on. With the spring cleanup, OSKCS, the Gold Cup, Road Race, the 4 Cycle Sprint and the Road Race Grand Nationals; we have a full plate and it can be burdensome for just a handful of people to pull off successfully. If you can help in any way via clean up, volunteer on race day, help set up and tear down before and after a race day, it would help greatly. We are in need of some new blood in scoring. We have one volunteer who is willing learn about the Orbits system but we can use more for backups. Remember our club is a family of volunteers who are willing to pitch in and help and feel a bit of pride for what our club has, can, and will accomplish.
