1 THE STEAM WHISTLE A Monthly Bulletin of the Chesapeake and Allegheny Steam Preservation Society, Inc. Facilities Located in Leakin Park, Baltimore, MD (Off Windsor Mill Road east of Forest Park Avenue) Tel. (410) Charles W. Kinzer President GAUGES Craig E. Close Editor/ Stationmaster Michael E. Schroeder Vice President 7.5 (contact Editor at bigsteam@comcast.net) Steven Zuiderveen Secretary 4.75 Robert Schwoerer Maintenance of Way James L. Carpenter Treasurer 3.5 Glenn Sharpe Switch Department VOLUME 36, NUMBER 6 JUNE 2010 Deadline for submittals to The Steam Whistle is the last Sunday of the month. ANNUAL MEETING WITH ELECTION The CALS Annual Meeting with bi-annual election will be held on July 4. There will be the standard picnic at noon. Entrees (burgers, dogs, and rolls) are provided. Attendees should bring other supplements mostly of the goodies sort. After eating, there will be a short meeting followed by the election. There are eight candidates for seven board positions: Jim Carpenter, Craig Close, Bill Derr, Bill Kinzer, Glenn Sharpe, Mike Schroeder, Bob Schwoerer, and Norm Warfield. TCA COMING IN JUNE WEDNESDAY, June 23, will be less than 3 weeks away when you read this article. The national convention of the Train Collectors Association will be at Leakin Park that day. The plan is to have a 50-person bus arrive at 10 AM. We will entertain them until noon when a second bus will arrive and all will eat box lunches provided by the convention. The first bus will depart after lunch and the second group will visit for about two hours. We really want to provide an entertaining time for the group and hope as many locomotives as possible will be on hand. PLEASE think about helping on WEDNESDAY, June 23 rd, and come early to prepare. MAY RUN DAY If we have had a string of really nice days for Second Sundays, it was broken in May. For several days the reported wind speed was 20 to 25 mph and that continued on Sunday. The temperature was probably in the low to mid 60s, so the overall condition was unpleasant. The track configuration was the same as in April with both tracks running in opposite directions but with only a single outside track through the station. Fritz Dahlin, running on the inside track, again started the day with his switcher delivering station supplies. Lisa Berkebile

2 acted as his conductor. Ned Treat and his son Bryan operated the Chessie diesel. Mike Schroeder had the Blue Atlantic running for the first time in a long while. He pulled club gons with Tim Allen as his conductor. Matt Berkebile ran his little gasser for a while, and John Frederick had his Shay. Herb Schroeder ran his Mogul with Jim Grieshaber sharing duties. The crowd was inconsistent and generally disappointing, but to be expected given the weather conditions. HERB FESTIVAL Our good luck with the weather returned for the Herb Festival on Saturday, May 29. Unfortunately, the festival patrons were not overly interested in riding trains. There were two to four trains running, but many left the station with light loads. Bill Kinzer, Bob Schwoerer, and Steve Zuiderveen shared duties operating the Chessie diesel, starting on the inside track and later switching to the outside as other trains dropped out of operation. Mike Tabor brought his Reading diesels with Glenn Sharpe sharing. Norm Warfield ran his Consolidation for a while with Larry Law as conductor. The steam attraction was the President Washington which was operated by Mike and Herb Schroeder with Tim Allen conducting. UPCOMING - A concert of Irish Fiddling will follow the June Public Run at 7 PM by the Mansion. - Picnic on August 22 with S-gauge club. Details later. - A night run on September TRACK PROPOSAL Discussion of the proposal to dual track much of the inside track was postponed to the June board meeting due to the absence of important voices. If you have an opinion, please inform a board member or plan to attend the June meeting on the 9 th. DISA N DATA Operating the electrics: The vacuum brake switch has 3 positions. ON is forward, HOLD is center, and RELEASE is back. Push the switch to ON to apply the vacuum brake. Move to center if the brakes are to remain on. Move back to release the brakes, BUT move the switch to HOLD after the brakes are released. The normal position of the brake switch is HOLD. When the units are put away, be sure the brake switch is in HOLD and the power switch is OFF. Putting away after a run: Please do not roll up several flags in one bunch. Place them on the shelf with the horns. Please do not put cars away with incorrect seats in them. The gons, B&O coaches, Chism coaches and the blue coach all have specific seats. Do not let them get intermixed. Steaming bay water: At end of day, turn off water inside the tower. The spigot handle may not turn valve fully off. Exempt purchases: CALS is exempt from sales taxes, but purchases are to be made under that exemption only with the permission of the Board. 2

3 CASS 2010 This year s adventure on Bald Knob above Cass, WV, was apparently enjoyable for those who attended. It is a fact, though, that members of CALS are permitted to attend as paying customers. Think about joining the group next year. This year included a trip on the Durbin Rocket and a new handicap-capable car at Cass. Big 6 and #11 Crossing Back Mountain Road At Spruce, Building Log Train Consist Photos by Mike Schroeder IN MEMORIAM Richard (Dick) C. Johnson passed away on Sunday, May 2nd. He had a CT-scan on April 22nd received a call from the technician saying to call 911 and get to an emergency room immediately. By the 26th doctors had confirmed the initial diagnosis of cancer of the liver, which had spread, and on the 29th he was moved to hospice. Dick was the first president of the CALS and the last charter member carried on our membership. He was also an associate member of the New Jersey Live Steamers. In accordance with his wishes, he was cremated and his ashes scattered in the woods on his property. He did not want any memorial or service of any kind. We wish his family well in their period of mourning. Original notice from Al Adams VIDEOS AND ARTICLES ON THE WEB See and for live steam information. 6 ACTIVITY NOTES The Whistle deadline for May came a bit early and activity for a couple of days was not included. Such activity: WE WAS ROBBED! Bob Schwoerer showed up on Tuesday to help guide repaving and found a mess. Craig Close showed up shortly and the two called the police, who did not know how to find us, of course. Thieves forced a bow in the north door of HS until the latch was loose. They made off with the TV, DVD player, camera, drills and associated pieces, and spare keys. Also the bag of hard candies, the bums. Then they cut the hardened shafts of 6 of 8 locks on the containers. They played with the tractors but could not start them, but they did take the Scott mower and the new gas chain saw. The next day the mower and several drills were recovered, though the mower had been damaged. After 27 years or so, additional security has been installed. Double deadbolts are on both the north and south doors, and plate covers are over the latches. The locks for HS and Midway have been keyed alike, and the containers are now secured by locks with unexposed shafts. In spite of all the police interruption, the area beyond the driveway was repaved, including the area around the lift. The job looks pretty good. There was an uh-oh when the contractor s small tractor did a spin with a wheel on the track. Two sections were replaced the next day. The outside loop from the south station switch through the station the track nearest the fence was finished, but the south switch still needs minor adjustment and was not available for Herb Festival. One more switch was installed in the yard and two more have been delivered. A considerable amount of leveling was accomplished on curves at each end of the Midway straight. Tony Kopecni with help from Bill Derr continued work on the 1 elevated track. Mike Schroeder continued fairly major work on Wendy and performed other maintenance tasks. Mowing and trimming commenced in earnest. WORK RECORD DATE WORKERS WORK ACCOMPLISHED 04/27 Bob Schwoerer, Close Robbed!
