1 April 2017 Rocket Review A Message from your Dixie Olds President Dixie Olds Club Board President Vice President Secretary Treasurer Chapter Representative Doug Williams Stefan Bartelski Cynthia Williams Vicki Mell Joe Fotschky Next Meeting Saturday, April 22, :00 pm Nancy Wilson s Home 2605 Bob Bettis Road Marietta, GA RSVP by April 17, 2017 Our April meeting is a work day to prepare for the BOPC show slated for May 5-6, Join the fun as we prepare the winner s awards, raffle prizes and other materials that are part of a successful event. RSVP for lunch and stay for the fun! Every Oldsmobile has a story. Some are more interesting than others. Recently I had the opportunity to hear what I thought was a very unusual and touching story about a 1984 Cutlass. OCA President, Jerry Wilson, was contacted by an Oldsmobile owner in my area about this car. He had won it in a raffle and was inquiring as to its value. Since I live near this person Jerry passed along his contact info and I gave him a call. In our brief chat he told me the car had been fully restored but he had no interest in keeping it and wanted to know how much he should ask for it. I arranged to meet him so I could evaluate his car and give him a more accurate price. I drove to a storage facility where I met the gentleman. When he opened the garage door I was stunned to see a beautiful Cutlass Supreme Coupe, immaculate both inside and out. I listened in amazement as the story of this car unfolded. This cream puff was purchased new in 1984 and had remained a one owner car until just a few months ago. The original owner racked up over 100,000 miles on it before developing serious mechanical issues. The repair estimate proved to be quite high. The owner could not see spending the money at the time to have it repaired. However, unable to bare the thoughts of trading the car away he placed it in storage hoping one day to have it completely restored. Close to twenty years passed and for various reasons the car was never restored. Then the owner was diagnosed with a terminal illness. It seemed his dream of having the car restored would never materialize. As a complete surprise the family members of the owner pitched in together and had the car fully restored for him. He was able to drive the car for a couple of years after that before finally passing away. After his death the family donated the car to his church. As a fundraiser the church raffled the car and that is how it ended up in the current owner s hands. A small fortune was spent on the restoration of this car. New paint, completely new interior, restored trunk and engine compartment along with a complete rebuild of the engine and transmission. Unfortunately, because the engine is a V-6 the actual value of the car is not that great and doesn t come anywhere close to the cost of the restoration. But still it says a lot for the family of the owner that they loved him enough to go to the great expense of restoring this car to its former glory so that he might enjoy it again in the remaining time he had on this earth. Do you have an amazing story about an Oldsmobile? If so, tell me about it, I d love to hear it and share it with our members. B.O.P.C. 4 DixieOldsClub.com Rocket Review We have a new feature on our website Oldsmobile and classic car repair shops and parts dealers. The club receives many requests about repair shops that are willing to service classic cars so we have started compiling a list of preferred vendors on our website that members have used and had good results. Be aware that past performance does not guarantee future results, so let us know if you have any issues when using one of these companies. Also, when using one of these establishments, please mention that you got their information from the Dixie Olds website. This might encourage them to support our events, such as the Gathering. SHIRTS HATS JACKETS & APPAREL Attention Members: we have partnered with Patricia s Spiritwear for branded Dixie Olds Club apparel. If you are interested in getting embroidered shirts, hats, jackets, and/or other standard apparel, you may purchase your item and send it to Patricia s Spiritwear and for approximately $6 per item plus return shipping costs, they will embroider our logo in your choice of color onto your garment. (You can also visit their website for a great selection of apparel that is also suitable for embroidery to avoid the extra shipping process.)
