2 About the Special Olympics 2014 USA Games Every very four years, Special Olympics conducts a USA Summer Games that includes athletes from all 52 US Programs. New Jersey has been selected as host of the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games, the Games of Welcome and Acceptance. Competitions will be offered in both traditional and Unified play, bringing together the community to support and compete side by side with our athletes, in what expects to be the most inclusive Games in Special Olympics history. Delaware will have four representatives participating in the Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg: Det. Danielle Martin, Final Leg Runner; Tony Bowe, SODE athlete and Final Leg Runner; Chip Simpson, Support Team Member and Danny Hall, Team Leader. WAWA is the presenting sponsor of Team Delaware, who will be proudly represented by more than 90 SODE athletes, s and coaches from around the state. Team Delaware is competing in aquatics, baseball, basketball, bocce, bowling, flag football, golf, powerlifting, soccer, sprint triathlon, tennis, and track and field. For the first time, Special Olympics Delaware will be represented by a school-based team at a national/ world games when Middletown High School takes the pitch in the 5 vs. 5 Unified soccer tournament. In addition, three representatives of SODE Project UNIFY s Youth Activation Committee will also participate in a Youth Summit at the Games. They will join more than 100 student leaders from across the country to share ideas and information on how sports can be a platform for a social justice movement and create positive change in their schools and communities. THE COUNTDOWN HAS BEGUN! Our Special Olympics athletes have been training hard, practicing with their teammates, and getting ready to do their very best - so help cheer them on! GO TEAM DELAWARE! SUPPORT TEAM DELAWARE and BE A FAN! This is your chance to be a part of this life-changing experience right in your own backyard. The Games will never be as close as they will be this year! Sporting venues located in Mercer County, N.J., will be within easy driving distance from Delaware and affords each of us the opportunity to witness a Special Olympics USA Games. Be a fan of sport and competition - support the home team and be a fan of Team Delaware! - Wish Team Delaware good luck and join a special send-off celebration on Saturday, June 14 at the Bob Carpenter Center in Newark. An informal program will take place around 12 noon followed by the official departure at 1 p.m. Players will arrive at 11:30am to mingle with well-wishers. Bring friends and family! - Because the sports venues are spread out around the Mercer County, New Jersey area, family members and spectators are encouraged to plan their travel ahead of time. Consider driving your own vehicle or sharing rides to maximize time flexibility and convenience while at the Games. - Make sure to visit the USA Games website to get directions for each venue and map out your destination before you travel. Download specific addresses to your GPS to save time, if you are using global navigation. - Check the the USA Games website for up-to-date competition schedules. 7 Catch the spirit! JUNE 14-21, 2014 Check the USA Games website at for info on sports and events locations. Special Olympics USA Games History Special Olympics began in 1968 when Eunice Kennedy Shriver organized the first International Special Olympics Games at Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois, USA. One thousand athletes with intellectual disabilities from 26 States and Canada competed in athletics (track & field), floor hockey and aquatics. The concept was born in the early 1960 s when Shriver started a day camp for people with intellectual disabilities. She saw that individuals with intellectual disabilities were far more capable in sports and physical activities than many experts thought. Since the first Special Olympics Games in 1968, the World Games have grown to be a truly international phenomenon, held in the United States, Europe and Asia. On July 2-7, 2006, the inaugural Special Olympics USA National Games took place in Ames, Iowa. Three thousand athletes from all 50 States and the District of Columbia competed in 12 sports and a demonstration of the Motor Activities Training Program (MATP). With the 2003, 2007 and 2009 World Summer Games being held outside of the United States, the USA National Games continues to provide a United States forum through which society at large can better understand the qualities and capabilities of people with intellectual disabilities. The most recent USA National Games was held in Lincoln, Nebraska from July 18-24, The Games showcase the skill and courage of the Special Olympics athlete. They are run at the highest level of professionalism and integrity. Through the USA National Games, Special Olympics athletes transcend the boundaries of geography, gender, age, culture and religion. The Special Olympics USA National Games are the ultimate event that will change the attitude of all those who are touched by them. VENUE Faculty Rd. & Washington Rd.
