Dr. Allan G. Farnazo, Department of Education (DepEd) Regional 12 director said, during the culmination of the 40-day rigid training of athletes in Koronadal City. Farnazo expressed high hopes for a strong finish of Region 12 in the 2014 Palarong Pambansa in Laguna. He commends the SOCCSKSARGEN Warriors for showing discipline, good character, determination and perseverance during the course of their training. Farnazo disclosed, any garnered medals on this year s palaro was based on goal oriented and scientific training. RD Farnazo assures P15K incentive to all gold medalists DEPED 12 OIC-Regional Director Allan Farnazo assured all athletes that they will receive P15, as cash incentive if they will win the gold medal during the 2014 Palarong Pambansa. All athletes, whether in individual or team event, will each get P15, cash incentive if they win gold, OIC-RD Farnazo announced during an evening meeting with coaches held at the covered court of Bagumbayan Central Elementary School in Sta. Cruz, Laguna. Individual events usually refer to athletics, swimming, lawn tennis, table tennis, archery, among others, while team events usually refer to ball games. He also made a conservative gold medal haul prediction of 30 gold medals for the region. The OIC-RD likewise thanked the respective LGUs of Region 12 for their financial support. Region 12 is composed of cities of Cotabato, Kidapawan, Tacurong, Koronadal and General Santos and provinces of North Cotabato, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and Sarangani. DepEd 12 Regional Director Allan Farnazo initiated the conduct of a simultaneous graduation for all athletes of the Soccsksargen Regional Athletic Association (SRAA) so as not to disrupt the on-going training at the South Cotabato Sports Complex. Farnazo said, the two day absence of athletes in their training could hamper their performance. Farnazo disclosed that the decision to make all athletes graduate simultaneously is not easy. Many are not in favor but this is a decision I have to make for the good of everybody and I take my hats off to those who followed and respected my decision. He said. Out of the total athletegraduates, SRAA produced 9 valedictorians, 2 salutatorians and 19 with Honors. As incentive to the athletes, all valedictorians were given P3,000; Salutatorians, P2,000; and P1,000 each for With Honors. All graduates were also provided with free Toga and a buffet lunch for them including their parents. In his message, Farnazo said, he salutes all the graduates for their hard work. He reminded all graduates, in order to be successful in whatever endeavor they will take, they must have the 6 Ts. These are:tiyak sa sarili; Tiis; Talino; Tibay ng Dibdib; Tiwala sa sarili; and Tiwala sa Diyos. SOCCSKSARGEN WARRIORS ready to battle-up for 2014 Palaro MORE than 510 athletes, coaches, chaperons and trainers of Region XII tagged as SOCCSKSARGEN Warriors are now ready to head on clash against their opponents from 16 other regions as Palarong Pambansa 2014 opens today. Equipped with adept strength and versatility after their 45-day training camp, the delegation headed by Regional Director Dr. Allan G. Farnazo, CESO IV, arrived in Sta. Cruz, Laguna last April 25. SOCCSKSARGEN Warriors will compete in 19 sports disciplines to grab the highest honors and become the country s newest heroes. We employed a scientific training for the athletes, wherein we followed various innovations and interventions in order for them to be well prepared for the competitions, said Dr. Magdaleno Duhilag, Reg l PESS Supervisor II. He further said that Division PESS Supervisors served as Training Managers, and even the Regional Director himself acted as the athletes second parent, giving inspirations and challenges during the camp. According to Dr. Farnazo, gold medalists for this year s Palaro shall receive a guaranteed 15,000 pesos cash incentive, making it as the highest monetary reward given compared to other regions in the country. Why? What s in a name? How does it influence a person s character? On September 19, 2001, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo issued Executive Order No. 36 which realigned the regions in Mindanao. Along with it, the provinces of South Cotabato, Sarangani and the cities of Koronadal and GeneralSantos of Region XI became part of the new Region XII joining the provinces of Sultan Kudarat and Cotabato as well as the cities of Kidapawan and Cotabato thereby gaining the name SOCCSKSARGEN. However, it took a little more than a decade for the region to find its real niche as it has for many years bore the banner of CRAA or Cotabato Regional Athletic Association during its regional meets. It was only last year when the OIC Regional Director Allan G. Farnazo, armed with EO 36, took a bold lead in officially declaring the Region XII delegation as SRAA or SOCCSKSARGEN Regional Athletic Association. Thus, the SOCCSKSARGEN Warriors is born. It s in this name that the region XII athletes shall be known. According to Don Juan Matus, The basic difference between an ordinary man and a warrior is that a warrior takes everything as a challenge, while an ordinary man takes everything as a blessing or as a curse. This is the very essence of SOCCSKSARGEN Warriors to signify the intensity of the region s desire to fight against all educational challenges that may hinder it from going towards excellence-the only direction SOCCSKSARGEN is pursuing as one region. By the name, the SOCCSKSARGEN Warriors are bound to defend the fortress of the region in the various sports events this Palarong Pambansa Although it has been cited that strength can t be attributed to a name, theorists believe in the power of conditioning. You can be what you believe you are. It is the first time that the region identifies its athletes and it creates a sense of pride which can also be a source of invigorating enthusiasm. With this kind of conditioning, the athletes may find a brand new courage that could steer the region s bid to be elevated to the higher rank in the Palarong Pambansa. If this happens, people in the country shall take notice of this group as a force to reckon with the region will proudly claim, At last, the SOCCSKSARGEN Warriors are finally born!

This was told by boxing coach Jimmy Mapute during an interview after a rigid training with his boxers. We will do our best to capture three gold medals in order for us to capture the title. Mapute said The SOCCSKSARGEN Warriors pug is composed of three (3) boxers from General Santos City, one (1) in South Cotabato and One (1) from Cotabato Province. Brothers Christian Pitt and Chris Sander Laurente will fight for 42 kilograms and 46 kilograms respectively. Klint Andrew Abapo who hails from Cotabato Province will do a blow by blow punch in 38 kilograms; Rovimel Son Dakila another boxer from Philippines Tuna Capital will make his way to snatch the gold in 40 kilograms while South Cotabato s pride Jeneben Basco will try his luck in 49 kilograms. I think our boxers are ready enough to their respective bouts since they do sparring sessions and joining tournaments during the 40 days training in Koronadal City. Mapute said Mapute added, that the region captures the title during the 2011 Palarong Pambansa held in Dapitan City. SRAA s boxer is trained by Toteng Laurente, the father of Christian Pitt and Chris Sander. The boxing bouts will be held at Laguna Capitol Compound Parking Area in Sta. Cruz this province. Meanwhile, Laguna Governor Emmanuel ER Ejercito revealed that Philippine Basketball Association star player James Yap, Olympian Skater Michael Martinez, celebrity star and swimmer Enchong Dee, Jericho Ejercito and People s Champ Manny Pacman Pacquiao will be the guests on the opening ceremony on May 05 at Laguna Sports Complex. The Department of Education under the headship of 2014 Palaro shifts to gold medal tally from points system THE 2014 Palarong Pambansa hosted by Laguna Province made a new twist by shifting to gold medal tally from the traditional points system in ranking the performance of the participating divisions. DepEd ASec Tony Umali disclosed during the press conference held at SM City Calamaba on April 30 that the primary reason why they adhere to the said rule is to be at par with the international standard. The Olympic Games uses the gold medal tally in determining the over-all and the runner-ups, ASec Umali stressed. The move to adopt the gold medal tally ranking system was made by the Philippine Sports Commission, the country s highest national sports body, to make our ranking system at par with international standards. Meanwhile, DepEd 12 OIC- Regional Director Allan Farnazo said, the gold medal tally will actually level the playing, since team events champions will be allocated 1 gold medal only. Farnazo also confirmed that Regional Directors are not anymore members of the Palarong Pambansa Board, hence, they have no more voting power. He added that a new law was passed creating the Palarong Pambansa Board that will be responsible in the selection of who will be the host of the annual national sports event. The City of Koronadal, South Cotabato is aspiring to host the Palaro Games next year. 4 4 SOCCSKSARGEN FLASH MAY 4, 2014 SRAA implements clean, green and eco-friendly policies for 2014 palaro THE SOCCSKSARGEN Regional Athletic Association (SRAA) has implemented clean, green and eco-friendly policy for this year s palaro, in compliance with the Department of Education Memorandum Order Number 44, which aims to promote environmental and sound methods to maximize and conserve resources. Dr. Allan Farnazo, DepEd Region 12 OIC Reg l Director has set policies for the SRAA delegation during their two week-stay in their billeting quarters at Sta. Cruz town in Laguna for strict compliance of all delegates. These include the keeping of their respective rooms and school premises clean at all times; waste segregation; conservation of energy by switching off the lights and electric fans before leaving the room; avoid vandalism; taking good care of all school facilities which include the keeping of toilets and latrines functional at all times; and observance of silence and curfew time at 9 pm. All athletes are obliged to bring their own utensils, plates and lunch boxes, instead of using plastics and Styrofoam. A Sanitation Area was also established to sterilize all utensils before and after eating. This is to avoid the incident of food poisoning which downed nearly 200 DepEd Region 12 RD Allan G. Farnazo, CESO IV delegates in the last year s palaro in Dumaguete City. The delegation has set up an orderly and presentable mess hall. All tables and chairs, including the stage are designed in purple and white, the official colors of DepEd Region 12. Tables are arranged according to events; while the center table is assigned for all guests, visitors and dignitaries who may come over. Aside from aiming for a better finish in this year s palaro in sports competition, the delegation is also looking forward to snatch some minor awards such as: Most DepEd Regional Director Allan Farnazo called on all Soccsksargen Regional Athletic Association (SRAA) delegates to be ambassadors of goodwill for the region upon arrival at Sta. Cruz, Laguna on Friday for the region s participation to the 2014 edition of Palarong Pambansa. He said, being dubbed as Cotabato region in the past year s palaro has given stigma and negative impression for the region but by being polite and disciplined, this could change the perception of others especially the people of Luzon. We came here as guests and strangers, we must come home winning the hearts of our host. He said, He orders all athletes and coaches to be courteous to all people in the locality, including the drivers, teachers and even passers by. As a matter of policy, Farnazo also wants to effect cleanliness in the billeting areas Disciplined Delegation, Most Organized delegation; and Most Clean, Green and Eco- Friendly delegation. Region 12 of Soccsksargen region comprises the provinces of South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sarangani and Sultan Kudarat; and the cities of Tacurong, Cotabato, Kidapawan, General Santos and Koronadal. Photo by: Efren Francisco SOCCSKSARGEN Warriors as ambassadors of goodwill for Palaro situated at Bagumbayan Elementary School and Calios Elementary School by abiding with the policy on waste segregation. He also wants to see to it that rooms are always clean and orderly especially the bathroom. To avoid possible food poisoning cases, a sanitation area was set up beside the mess hall where all utensils are sanitized before and after usage. Coaches and chaperones were advised to eat together with their athletes and look after each serving to avoid wastage of food. Farnazo also implements no drinking, gambling and smoking policy inside the billeting quarters and implements security measures for the safety of everybody.
