1 HOME AWAY FROM HOME P&G Family Home an Oasis for U.S. Olympic Team families
2 WELCOME HOME Procter & Gamble is providing athletes and their families a place to gather during Games Team USA partner Procter & Gamble will open its P&G Family Home to U.S. Olympians and their families in Vancouver on Feb. 11. Located at 580 West Hastings St., the winter wonderland themed home will provide Team USA with a complimentary place to come together for the duration of the Olympic Winter Games. The house will give Olympic families the chance to mingle with other Team USA families and take advantage of four floors of P&G brand experiences, including a P&G grooming salon and spa for Olympic mothers, a Pringles/Wii lounge, a Crest/ Oral-B smile center, a Pampers play village, laundry services and an internet café. More than 200 athletes have responded with acceptances to their invitations, along with more than 700 family members, according to Janet Fletcher, associate marketing director for the P&G Olympic Team. The inspiration for the P&G Family Home came from the idea of creating a home away from home, for athletes and their families, Fletcher said. We have such a broad portfolio of products, she said, and when we thought about What s the connection with the families? it was the experiences we give people every single day We re in their homes they use us in the morning, they use us with their children we wanted to bring a little bit of that to create a home away from home. On the top floor of the home and first stop on the Family Home tour was the P&G Grooming Spa, which will provide makeovers with Pantene, COVERGIRL, Olay, Venus and Secret products from locally-hired hair stylists and makeup artists. We designed this for moms because we know that mom will want an escape. She may not want to be in the Wii Lounge or the Budweiser Bar, said Cheri McMaster, external relations manager from the P&G Olympic Team. I think it gives them a little boost of confidence, too, Fletcher added. If their daughter or son does really well at the Games I think a mom at that point is like Do I have my lipstick on? They ll be cameraready. The Tide laundry service, according to Fletcher, was an idea that surfaced after the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing when P&G asked athletes families about their experiences at the Games. When Shawn Johnson s mom was in Beijing, we asked her about her experiences and how they could have been more comfortable and this was [an idea], she said. The last thing families want to do when they re here for an extended period of time is laundry, so this way they can bring it here and we do it for them. Adjacent to the laundry area is the Pampers play village, a large, colorful and heavily-padded playroom for toddlers and their parents to run wild. A few of the athletes [such as skeletoner Noelle Pikus- Pace (daughter is Lacee, 2) and speedskater Chad Hedrick (daughter is Hadley, born March 2009) are young parents, Fletcher said. So, we hope that they ll come here with their children and spouses. The room is replete with brand new toys, books, the first-ever Olympic diapers and a gigantic version of a park bench at the end of the room for the parents Mc- Master said, So adults can imagine how that just climbing up onto a chair takes an enormous amount of work [for a child]. The Pringles Lounge will have a custom Pringles bar, where Olympic families will have a menu of 45 Pringles flavors to choose from and a Nintendo Wii lounge. A few of the athletes are young parents, so we hope that they ll come here with their children and spouses, said Janet Fletcher, associate director of marketing for the P&G Olympic Team. The P&G Grooming Spa, which will provide makeovers with Pantene, COVERGIRL, Olay, Venus and Secret products from locally-hired hair stylists and makeup artists. We designed this for moms because we know that mom will want an escape, said Cheri McMaster, external relations manager from the P&G Olympic Team. P&G s Olympic sponsorship of Team USA includes the 2010 U.S. Olympic Team and the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team. The Home will operate in Vancouver from February from approximately 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Media requests to cover the P&G Family Home can be sent to PGFamilyHome@taylorpr.com.

No matter how strong, how successful or how invincible they think they are, there comes a time to face the reality of life after sports. At least several members of the 2010 U.S. Olympic Team are mingling their life in sports with their life after sports. They could be considered the athlete-entrepreneurs of the Games. We all have to think about what we re going to do in life after sports, said women s mogul skier Shannon Bahrke (Tahoe City, Calif.), an Olympic silver medalist in 2002 in Salt Lake City. Over the next couple of weeks, Bahrke s focus will be aimed at making the most of her final Olympic competition. After the Vancouver Games end, Bahrke plans to focus her full attention on making Silver Bean Coffee successful with the same focus and energy she put into skiing moguls. Noelle Pikus-Pace s (Orem, Utah) double life for the next couple of weeks includes competing in skeleton racing at the Vancouver Games and her SnowFire Hat Co. Women s mogul skier Michelle Roark s (Denver, Colo.) business is Phi-nomenal Perfume, a product line of natural perfumes and colognes. Biathlete Haley Johnson (Lake Placid, N.Y.) began making her own line of greeting cards. Bahrke, Pikus-Pace, Roark and Johnson all got started down their business paths in different ways, but the common thread was their sports competition. Shannon Bahrke Noelle Pikus-Pace It was while sitting in a coffee shop after a day on the slopes that Bahrke s plan began to take shape. I thought, There has to be a way to bottle up the energy I felt in that shop, Bahrke said. But it was while sitting out the 2007 ski season to rehabilitate an injured knee that Bahrke finalized the plan. Her mission changed from selling coffee to providing it. While I m in competition, I m 100 percent focused on my skiing, Bahrke said. When I m on the road, I do the books for the company, but I don t have to focus on them every day. Her fiancé, Matt Happe, focuses on the business. Together they oversee the making of 12 different types of coffee in dark, medium and light blends. The Silver in the company s name represents Bahrke s Olympic medal. On the Cover: P&G Family Home Photos: Getty Images Pikus-Pace s winter hat business is nearing its first anniversary. She reports business picked up in the fall and winter months after a slow start last spring and summer. Her older sister, Amanda Yates, is a partner. continued...
4 I design most of the hats, Pikus-Pace said. We initially thought our target group would be year olds. But we ve found our sales have gone to a wide range of ages both men and women. Janson Pace, Noelle s husband, came up with the company name, noting the winter and the need for warmth. However, the boss said there are no royalty payments involved. Roark wanted to match her passion for mogul skiing with a fragrance, believing in aromatherapy. Her products are custom blended with ingredients from all over the world. We hope to provide women with a sense of energy, power and focus, Roark said. Johnson began her business of making and selling cards out of necessity early in her career. She was training at the Maine Winter Sports Center with the help of a small stipend. She found that her creations provided some extra grocery money. I m inspired by the environment around me, the Adirondacks and northern Maine in particular, and enjoy boiling down the scene to a few key images to convey the meaning of the moment, Johnson said. Johnson sells her cards out of The Bookstore Plus in Lake Placid, N.Y. While competing, she plans to keep the business low key, but would like to expand and continue it in her after sports life. BALANCING ACT: PARENT ATHLETES ON TEAM USA While all Team USA athletes can call themselves Olympians, some of them have another title that puts an entirely different weight on their shoulders: parent. Twenty-three Team USA competitors have at least one son or daughter. Eight parents play hockey. There are two each from speedskating, luge, ski cross and curling. Others come from biathlon, skeleton and Nordic combined. Cross-country skier James Southam James Southam (Anchorage, Alaska) is the newest parent on Team USA and the only parent on the cross-country ski team. His daughter, Hazel, was born last November. When she was born, it was awesome, he said. It was the coolest thing I ve ever been around or been a part of. But the timing was less than ideal. Hazel was born four days before the ski season started, which meant the 31-year-old Southam had to fly home for three days and go back to training before the first races of the year. It was one of the hardest things I ve ever done, he said. Fortunately my parents and her parents were both there to help her out. While traveling has been difficult for Southam, he keeps everything in perspective. I definitely miss being around my family, and I guess it s just a little extra motivation. When I m here, it s a business trip. I m here to do my job, and that s been a good thing as well. Pairs figure skater Mark Ladwig (East Parrish, Fla.) can relate to balancing family and work. His son, Holden, was born last September. His experience in figure skating has taught him a lot about tackling the most important parts of his off-ice life. I ve learned over my experience with skating that you don t have to sacrifice much if you plan and prioritize, Ladwig, 29, said. I ve been able to marry a girl, Janet, from my hometown. We ve been able to start a family. I know we have to be organized and know when we re doing what. Even though he passed on his athletic genes to his son, Ladwig says there s no pressure on Holden to be an Olympian. I ve said he can do anything, Ladwig said. I m going to try to maintain that no matter what he does it must be good. I don t care if he wants to sweep streets. He s just got to be the best at it. I want him to strive for excellence in his life. And Ladwig knows his family will be cheering hard for him come Feb. 14, when he skates with his partner Amanda Evora (Sugar Land, Texas) in the Pairs Short Program. No matter the result, Ladwig knows his family members will continue to be his most fervent fans. My wife will love me. My child loves me. I can go and do my best, and if I don t, they will still love me. I have a lot of opportunities outside of skating that I m very thankful for. Michelle Roark Southam, meanwhile, will start competition in the Men s 15 km Free on Feb. 15.
