The best way to watch the 20 th European Athletics Championships Barcelona 2010 is to buy an Event Pass which will give access to all eleven sessions between 27 July and 1 August. 2 2 START OF THE B10 VOLUNTEER TRAINING PHASE The European Athletics Championships Barcelona 2010 has broken the record with a very successful volunteer recruitment campaign attracting more than 1,000 volunteers in less than four months. This is a crucial area which will ensure the event s success. At the moment, the organisation is happy with the results of the first call for volunteers. The goal is to reach 2,500 to 3,000 people to help with the organisation process of the biggest European Track & Field event. Without a doubt, the success formula has been the recruitment campaign s message, clearly transmitted Mònica Piosa, María Zapata and Rakel Zamora to all citizens - anyone interested can take part in a big event like this one, and there are no limits. During the first few months, the B10 Volunteers department worked hard to recruit candidates using the sporting events calendar and attending courses, conferences, seminars and all sorts of popular activities. Many people participated in the operation, with the volunteer recruitment team visiting associations, clubs and schools. The message is reaching all sections of society. The volunteer s Deputy Director, María Zapata, thinks that the legacy of the Olympic Games in 1992 is a crucial factor that influence many people to become enthusiastic about participating in a new event hosted in Barcelona. All interested people do not hesitate to visit the Championships website () signing up as a B10 friend - the first step towards becoming a volunteer. All B10 friends will then receive a second form to fill in followed by an interview. The next step for the volunteer s recruitment team is the training courses, an essential stage to train volunteers. The first one will be a general training, given online on a dedicated part of the B10 website. All information about athletics, the city and the event will be found there. The volunteer s recruitment team gives an information session in Viladecans After this first course, the volunteers will undertake a more specific training which will be used to allocate everyone, according to their preferences and skills, to one of the nine functional areas:

3 technical, operations and services, protocol and ceremonies, accommodation and transport, technology, press, marketing and promotion, and support services for the public. 3 Regarding the Meeting Ciutat de Barcelona 2009 and the Spanish Championship, which will take place a few days after the training, the Volunteers department thinks that more than 200 of these candidates will be able to participate as volunteers in these events in order to gain experience. In January 2010 the second important volunteer recruitment campaign will start and it will last six months. The training stage for the new volunteers will take place as soon as they sign up. Everyone 18 and older wishing to participate in this great event can apply through the website or by calling the Barcelona information service 010 (form outside Barcelona call ). A CATALAN MERGER WILL BE THE OFFICIAL TRANSPORT AGENCY The Barcelona 2010 Organising Committee made some key decisions during their March meeting. The most important one was allocating the official transport agencies to Avant Group and Alsina Graells. The two companies decided to work together as a temporary company merger in order to compete in the tender, which proved to be a successful move. The two companies will be in charge of the bus transportation of all accredited participants, including services for arrivals/departures and transportation between official hotels and the competition venues. Both companies have extensive experience in the organisation of sports events and will start working immediately with the LOC transport office to prepare this summer s test events.

The Portuguese city will host the SPAR European Team Championships in June, and the World Championships will take place in the German capital in August. THESE ARE THE NINE BARCELONA 2010 AMBASSADORS The Barcelona 2010 Organising Committee has set up the Championships ambassadors list which includes great champions such as Carlota Castrejana, Carmen Valero, José Manuel Abascal, Javier Moracho, Martín Fiz, Abel Antón, Javier García Chico, Fermín Cacho y Valentí Massana. Barni with Valentí Massana Javier Moracho and Jose Manuel Abascal The European Athletics Championships Barcelona 2010 Organising Committee considers the ambassador s position to be a very strategic one. The former champions will represent the event in several promotional activities and will spread information about the importance of the Championships, one of the most significant events for Spanish sport. The first champion to act as ambassador was the former triple jump indoor European Champion, Carlota Castrejana, who attended the press conference organised by Barcelona 2010 in Torino during the Indoor Championships of last month. 6 The nine ambassadors each has an impressive biography, as they have all obtained medals in important events, notably Fermín Cacho s Olympic medal during Barcelona 1992, and the twice marathon World champion, Abel Antón. The latter won the Prince of Asturias Award for Sports together with Martín Fiz. 6 The Barcelona 2010 Organising Committee has extended the invitation of becoming B10 ambassadors to all active Spanish athletes. When travelling abroad to compete, they are the most valuable public relations support. Barni with Abel Antón RUTH BEITIA: BEING IN BARCELONA IS LIKE BEING AT HOME Today, 1 st of April, she turns 30, but she maintains an independent young spirit Ruth Beitia, the best Spanish high jumper of all time (12 gold medals in the Spanish Championships, Spanish record holder with 2.02 metres), is one of the most important figures in the Spanish female team today. She has just won silver at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Torino, but all she can talk about at the moment is Berlin and Barcelona. You won t get rid of me easily, - she says before talking about the next World Championships and Barcelona In my time as a high jumper there has been a very high performance level, with several jumpers always trying to beat the World record. That is why I m very happy to have remained in the elite, and to still be amongst the best. My goal now is to win at an outdoor event. I have three indoor medals, in Valencia I finished fourth in the Indoor World Championships 2008, but then I always have trouble performing well in the summer. I hope that this year in Berlin things will improve. I m very confident. After Berlin, all the preparation will be focused on Barcelona, the city where she made her international debut as a junior athlete and where she beat her first Spanish record in the junior category. Barcelona has always brought me luck, she remembers with gratitude, and I have competed many times there. I made my debut as an international athlete in Hospitalet and I was lucky to break many records there. I also think that I first started taking athletics seriously when I saw the 1992 Olympic Games on TV. It was like love at first sight.

7 Ruth has focused on Barcelona 2010 since it was awarded the European Championships. The Cantabrian has many good memories of the times she spent training in the Catalan capital. For me, being in Barcelona is like being at home, she says. 7 She has jumped over two metres on five occasions I will never forget the first time: I was in Avilés, at an event that started at 10am. She herself admits that Stefka Kostadiova s World record is beyond her reach, but she is convinced that she will jump higher: hopefully I will reach 2.05 or 2.06 metres. With the silver medal in Torino she jumped higher than Blanka Vlasic and others and she gained her confidence back. Especially the way she competed against the European Champion Ariane Friedrich from Germany, making her jump over 2.03 with a genius strategy that only the best can carry out. I was very motivated and I thought I was able to do anything, even if indoors I always have trouble jumping over two metres, she said after the final at the Oval Lingotto in Torino. After the final, her best friend amongst world-class jumpers, the Beijing Olympic Champion, Tia Hellebaut, gave her the silver medal. Ruth gets along very well with her opponents, especially with Iva Strakova from the Czech Republic, but she really misses Marta Mendía in top events. In Barcelona 2010 they could meet again.
