Overview This Friends & Family Handbook is intended to assist all friends and family who will attend the 2018 Olympic Games in PyeongChang, South Korea. It contains information to allow you to plan now for the Games that will be held from February 9-25, ***Please be aware that the information presented in this handbook is subject to change and is by no means guaranteed by the United States Olympic Committee or any of the National Governing Bodies*** Olympic Check-List for Friends and Family How Can Olympic Friends and Family Help Olympians Perform Their Best? Minimize the Distractions Introduction to the Landscape of the Olympics: At every Olympic Games, athletes and their friends and families are surprised by the special pressure and stress created by this event. There are a number of unique aspects of the Olympics, including: It s a party for the world, but serious business for the athlete. Maintaining a high performance focus during the world s biggest party is a new challenge for most athletes. Security restrictions make casual meetings impossible. Family and friends used to hanging out with their athlete during down time are often shocked to discover meetings need to be meticulously planned or they don t happen, due to security zones and athlete-only accommodations. These restrictions may be heightened during the Olympic Games. Travel logistics make even brief meetings a lengthy ordeal. A routine ten-minute trip may take ninety minutes during the Olympics, and rest and relaxation time can be devoured by travel difficulties. Almost everyone gets overwhelmed by the Olympics. It doesn t matter how much international experience you have. The Olympics are bigger, and everyone knows it. If you have a legitimate chance to medal, you know it can change your life. Coaches want greater control of their athletes in this most important event, but feel like they have less control. All of the normal methods of operating are removed at the Olympics, and this puts coaches on edge. Pushing coaches for individualized plans to accommodate friends and family tend to irritate them. It is unrealistic to expect or request individual assistance to accommodate the athletes family or friends. There are many special events for athletes that interfere with ideal training and rest schedules. One sponsor party or TV interview may not seem like a big deal, but there are so many of these opportunities that valuable time for training recovery is lost.

Many more family and friends show up at the Olympics than at other events. Everybody wants to go to the Olympics, and they want to connect with the athlete once they arrive. This can put pressure on athletes as well as their friends and families who don t want to hurt the feelings of relatives who have come a long way just to see them. Many of these family and friends don t know how to act at competitions. Some relatives or friends may not know that the time just before competing is not ideal for family photographs with the Olympian. Or they may ask why the Olympian can t go out to dinner. Family and friends need to understand this is not the time to spend with the athlete their focus needs to be on their performance. Housing, meals, and travel situations are often less than ideal for family and friends. Paying a lot of money is no guarantee of a great situation at the Olympics. This can cause frayed nerves. If you don t have tickets to events, there is often little to do at the Olympics for family and friends. Some families have found that the best way to deal with the down time is to bring along good friends or family to have fun with. Family and friends feel a desire to be part of the athlete s performance, to give encouragement and support, but aren t integrated into the normal performance teams. Their encouragement may not always be what the athlete needs. This is a delicate point that athletes are afraid to talk to friends and family about. Athletes tell us that new people in a competitive situation can create stress, even if they are loving and supportive people. Some Tips for Friends and Family of Potential Olympians: Before the Olympics For many athletes, there is a great deal more pressure before the Games than during the Games. Families and friends can be a great resource during this time if they understand the pressure the athletes are feeling. The following tips are based upon the experiences of Olympic friends and family members during the last year before the Olympics. 1) Do not make a decision about going to the Games based upon whether the athlete you know makes the team. Athletes often won t know until the last minute whether they have made the team, and knowing that people are waiting for them to qualify before tickets are booked creates tremendous pressure. 2) Make your plans early. Lock in housing, tickets, etc. as early as possible. The best way to get information is through the official site of the Olympic Games ( or through one of our official sponsors ( Additional information can be found by contacting your NGB. 3) Make your plans assuming you will not be able to see the athlete you know until after their event. A schedule of events is also available at the above websites. 4) Don t ask the athlete about the logistics of the Games. They won t know. The best way to get information is by contacting the Friends and Family Manager at your NGB or at the USOC. Be sure to have this contact information both before and during the Games.

5) Nominate someone with your Friends and Family group to be your Friends and Family Captain and ask that person to coordinate all logistics, including the purchasing of tickets, without the help of the athlete. Inform your NGB who you have nominated as your Captain and appoint them as the central point of communication between the NGB and your group. 6) Try not to ask the athlete if they think they are going to make the team. It is an honest question, but elite athletes know that focusing too much on a potential outcome can interfere with that outcome. Even strong favorites to make the team hate this question. It makes them nervous. 7) If you have been a regular fan and supporter of an athlete as they have competed over the years, by all means keep it up now more than ever. However, if you haven t really talked to your nephew, cousin, or friends about their sport before, it s not a good idea to call up the athlete during the events leading up to the Olympics to offer your support. It s not that the support isn t wanted; it s just that it is new and different and can be a distraction for athletes who need routine. 8) If you are very close to an athlete, one of the best things you can give is affection and support for the PERSON, not the athlete. As an athlete, it is great to know that people care about you, not your recent race results. 9) Make your Olympic interaction plan and stick to it. This may be harder than you think to pull off, as you get more and more nervous. Discuss with your athlete what is his/her ideal communication and access plan while at the Olympics. Determine how, when and where you will access each other in the Games environment. Ask your athlete how you can support them and about which topics he/she may or may not wish to discuss with them prior to competition. Stick with the plan agreed upon by you and the athlete. Remember that some coaches and/or teams have policies to restrict cell phone use during the Games and/or in the Athlete Village. Remember, your U.S. phone may not work in another country! During the Olympics Olympians have told us that, during the Games, family and friends can be an enormous asset or an unanticipated problem. 1) Stick to your Olympic plan! 2) Be low maintenance. Make your own plans and your own schedule. Figure out your own logistics. Communicate clearly to your athlete that you are self-sufficient and that they do not need to worry about you. 3) Don t ask the athlete to try and find you tickets. This creates a new stress, uncertainty, and guilt if they cannot find them. 4) Make your own schedule and keep yourself busy. Try to get tickets to lots of events if you can afford them. Do pin trading, shop, go sightseeing, visit the P&G House (see Friends & Family Hospitality). 5) Be happy. This is contagious. 6) Expect to be nervous. Talk to someone other than your Olympian about this nervousness. Nervousness is also contagious.

7) Expect the athlete to be different. Even if you have a lot of experience at competition with the athlete, expect a certain increased intensity and pressure in the athlete. 8) Have a great time and cheer loud. 8 Make copies of important documents such as passports, credit cards, driver's license, etc. Leave a copy at home and bring a copy to South Korea. While in South Korea, keep copies with you and store your originals in a safe place such as your hotel room. Consider purchasing trip cancelation insurance and/or medical and emergency evacuation insurance. Calling South Korea - First dial 011, the U.S. exit code. Next dial 82, the country code for Korea. Then dial the area code and finally the phone number. To call the US from South Korea, you will need to enter the exit code designated by your cellphone carrier followed by the country code, area code and last seven digits. You would dial: XX +1 (XXX) XXX-XXXX Flight and Arrival Information Incheon International Airport (ICN) is the official port of entry for the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games. Traveling to and from South Korea requires considerable planning. You can find direct flights to Incheon from New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Dallas, Detroit, Atlanta, Honolulu, Seattle and Washington D.C. Flights will take anywhere from 12 to 14 hours depending on your city of departure. Prescription drugs/medicines and medical devices for personal use should be accompanied by a valid prescription issued by a physician, and a receipt of purchase issued by the pharmacy. Please check with your specific airline carrier for limitations on checked and carry-on luggage. Packing for the Games The Olympic Winter Games typically feature a fun and casual atmosphere. When packing for the Games, we suggest bringing clothing and accessories that will ensure personal comfort during your stay. All spectators should anticipate walking from transportation drop locations/parking lots to venues we strongly encourage bringing comfortable (and broken in) footwear. Weather in PyeongChang can be very humid, windy, and cold. The month of February in PyeongChang sees average daily temperatures of 23 F with lows averaging 14 F. In Gangneung the average daily temperature in February is 36 F with an average low of 29 F. The humidity makes it seem much colder in both clusters. With this in mind, we recommend that you consider clothing that is windproof, water resistant/proof, and warm, but also easily layered to ensure your comfort across venues and competitions. You will also want to bring any traditional toiletries and medications. Don t forget to bring personal care items such as a blow dryer (with power converter and adapter), shampoo, spare contact lenses, glasses/sunglasses, and sunscreen. Also remember your cellphone charger and camera charger/extra batteries!

Mobile Apps ***Google Maps DOES NOT function properly in South Korea. You cannot receive step-by-step driving directions in the app*** We have not been able to identify a one-solution app for navigating South Korea, but you will find alternative apps below: Waze Used internationally, Waze was able to provide step by step navigation in English between Incheon International Airport and Gangneung. Kakao Map Broadly used across South Korea, Kakao Map is in English, but the locations you look up may not be translated in English. Naver Map Completely in Korean, but does respond to input of some key words in English. Google Translate You can download a Korean keyboard to use on the app, translate text with camera or translate a conversation with the microphone on your cellphone. Housing Securing housing for the 2018 Games in PyeongChang should be a top planning priority. 28 Soondubu is a spicy stew made of tofu. Samgyeopsal is pork belly or you can think of it as a thick bacon. Grill it plain, dip it in a seasoning of salt, pepper and sesame oil, wrap it in lettuce and add some garlic, onions, and kimchi. Haemul Pajeon is a seafood pancake. A variety of pancakes jeon can be found in Korean restaurants.

Naengmyeon are cold buckwheat noodles. Buckwheat is common to the Gangneung area. This dish is made up on long thin noodles with cucumbers, slices of Korean pear, beef and an egg. Most tables are self-service, meaning you will find your utensils (chopsticks and spoons) and napkins at your table. Sometimes it can be hidden in a built-in drawer or box. Call Button Most tables have a call button. Use this to alert your server (otherwise they will probably ignore you).

The city is giving restaurants a translation page (see above for an example of one) where you can point to a specific phrase and your server can read the translation in Korean. This can help you order water, a fork, or request that a meal not be spicy.

Grocery Stores There are two grocery stores near the Village. It will be difficult to purchase American food from these stores, but they do have pasta and pasta sauces, yogurt, plenty of produce, tea, and milk. Multigrain bread is difficult to find. Grocery Stores in Gyo-Dong, Gangneung Coastal village = Grocery stores in Gyo-Dong. Take Haseulla-ro Road and turn east onto Jeongwon-ro. The address above marks the spot of the grocery store located to the east. The one closer to the main road is located at 56 Jeongwon-ro.

If you need a cart, most grocery stores require that you pay 100 won to unlock the cart. When you return the cart, re-lock it and get your 100 won back! Koreans usually make you pay for bags, or won t have any bags available in the store. Outside of the grocery store is an area where you can use the store s boxes to box up your purchase. See picture to the left there will be piles of boxes and tape available for free. Grocery Store in Daegwalyeong-myeon Mountain Cluster ( Suha-ri, Daegwalnyeong-myeon)

The grocery store in Daegwalyeong-myeon: E-Mart: This is basically a better quality, Korean Wal-Mart where you can purchase small appliances, clothes, groceries, and probably everything in-between. This store is multi-level, with escalator ramps for you and your grocery cart.
