RRPC Squad Scores at the Five Man Fun Shoot! When 6 April dawned, it was cold (32 degrees) and a bit windy. The squad, Tom Templeton (20 ga), Mark Hanlon (28 ga), Bob King (.410 bore), Jesse Davis (12 ga) and Craig DePiazzy (12 ga), met either at Tom s house at o dark-thirty, or at the club (Craig was driving the UVA squad down). Yes, Mark had to set his alarm and get up early. Tom drove the scenic back roads on paths only he knew, but the squad eventually emerged from the hinterlands to find the Interstate. Mark slept. With Bob s directions, we found the Conservation Park of Richmond, the host for the Five Man Fun Shoot. The temperature had climbed to the 40 s. After registration and payment of the entry fees, the squad proceeded to Field 3. The shooting order was Craig, Mark, Tom, Jesse, and Bob as tailgunner. Surprisingly, Tom rarely needed the reminder that he was position 3! Temperature was breaking 50 as we started, but there was still a wicked wind. The first round did not prove to be our best, but at least served to provide a warm up. Jesse learned the value of shooting a clean gun only after Craig came to his rescue with a can of Blast Off to blow out the gunk in his semi-auto. [Jesse s comment: I would qualify this statement in that I was aware of needed gun cleaning, but thought the better use of time was procuring permission to attend from my thankfully indulgent wife, and getting a reasonably good night s rest not to say that gun cleaning is always top priority.] Round Two, Three and Four showed that we can buckle down and shoot. Tom turned in a clean 25 straight on Round two, and both Bob and Tom turned in clean rounds for Round three. The final tally was Tom 95 (using his signature Model 12), Bob 91 (with the mouse gun), Craig 90, Jesse 90, and Mark, shooting a borrowed gun in 28 ga for the first time in competition, a personal best 86. Included in the entry was lunch of Tube Steak & chili. Bob then served as our designated referee for the afternoon flights. When the shooting was complete and the scores tallied, the Rivanna squad found that each hit and each miss of our morning endeavors was critical to our winning $75 of our entry fees back as Lewis Class winners. Flush with success, we could barely contain ourselves as we were then each called up to claim door prizes as well. Most of us were called up twice as there were more donated prizes than competitors. The loot included an engraved cased double knife set, shotgun wads, once fired hulls, and lots of ammo. For the return trip to Charlottesville the squad was giddy with success. Tom stuck to the Interstate and made good time. Jesse, Bob, and Tom discussed the lack of merit to heavy shot loads in 20 and 28 ga shells, the sad demise of the 16 ga, and the disfavor of the 12 ga 3½ inch shell. Mark slept. The Five Man Fun Shoot at Richmond is an annual event, so consider joining us next year. The emphasis is on fun! -Submitted by Robert King VCDL Meetings for 2014 Meeting Reminder! 3 Page 3 V O L U M E 5, I S S U E 5 Project Appleseed Clinic, 2014 Schedule RRPC will host three Appleseed clinics in They will be on May 17-18, July 12-13, and November 8-9. Appleseed is a two-day program that combines rifle marksmanship instruction with learning about our American heritage and the spirit that animated the Founders to fight for our freedom, by telling the real story of April 19, 1775 the first day of the Revolutionary War. Participants will learn the skills required to shoot accurately at distances of up to 400 yards from standing, sitting and prone positions. Students who score 210 or higher on the Army Qualification Test target (equivalent to Expert) are awarded a Rifleman patch. The clinic takes place at the rear of the lower Bullseye pistol range. The distance is 25 meters, and the target is scaled to replicate the Army D target at distances from yards. Expect to shoot rounds during the course. Centerfire rifles up to.30 caliber are allowed, but most students use.22 rifles. You should equip the rifle with a sling and two magazines (tube-fed rifles are OK, too), and also bring a shooting mat, lunch/ snacks and water, and a chair. A set of peep sights or a scope is recommended but not required. Anyone who can handle a rifle safely, from beginners to experienced shooters, can participate. Beginners and families are particularly welcome. Pre-registration is required. Appleseed clinics are open to the public. Clinics typically sell out in advance with a 25 shooter limit in each session. RRPC members will receive advance notice when registration opens. For complete information, or to register online please visit FIRST Steps Pistol FIRST stands for Firearm Instruction, Responsibility, and Safety Training, a program the NRA developed to meet the need for a firearms orientation program for new gun purchasers. This FIRST Steps program is a basic course abbreviated to the most fundamental shooting skills, and the specifics of a particular model of pistol. This course, because of its narrow focus, can be completed as quickly as three hours. Students will get the NRA's The Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook and quick practical lessons on the safe use, cleaning, and storage of their pistol. The practical exercise covers a single pistol shooting position. As the number of participants or pistol types present increases, the course will take proportionally longer. The course goal is: To provide beginning shooters with an introduction to the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to own and use a specific pistol model safely. NRA FIRST Steps Pistol Orientation Lesson Plans The Lessons covered by this program: 1. Introduction to Pistol Safety, Parts, and Operation 2. Introduction to Ammunition and the Fundamentals of Pistol Shooting 3. Introduction to Pistol Shooting from the Benchrest Position 4. Introduction to Pistol Cleaning, Storage, and Training Opportunities Students will receive feedback on the live-fire exercise and a course certificate upon successful completion of the lessons. Students will receive a Basic Practical rocker upon successful demonstration of firing a qualifying group. RRPC will be offering its FIRST Steps Pistol program on the fourth Thursday of each month from January through October, 2014, inclusive, as well as the first Thursday of December, The classes are scheduled to start at 6:00PM and end no later than 10:00PM. Contact: Trap Shoot Director/RSO Mike Kreynus (804) Tactical Shooters Group (TSG) The RRPC Tactical Shooters Group [TSG] meets informally on Sundays at 1.30pm on the AP&T (formally the PPC) range. The TSG's primary focus is the practical deployment of the tactical carbine (aka "black rifles") for sport, duty and/or self-defense. We seek to improve our skills with a carbine/rifle in a dynamic environment utilizing modern techniques and skill-building drills as taught by some of the world's top firearms trainers (i.e., Viking Tactics, Vickers Tactical, EAG Tactical, etc.). We also incorporate practical pistol in our practice sessions and have recently added informal Saturday night pistol practice on the indoor range. Beginning in May, we will be incorporating a "Fundamentals Day" (day TBD) on a regular basis to help introduce shooters to the TSG. It is designed to bring the novice and seasoned shooter alike up to speed on current rifle technique as it pertains to a "tactical" environment (e.g. zeroing, gun handling, equipment briefing, etc.). If you are interested in the learning more, we invite you to join the TSG Google group to be kept in the loop on our activities. Please contact: Ron Alabanza edcholster@gmail.com or Carlos Santillan carlosdep@gmail.com and we can get you sorted. The RRPC TSG is open to all associates and members in good standing. We invite and encourage all levels of shooters to join us for skill-building and fun.

6 Page 6 Cowboy Action The RRPC sponsors the Rivanna Rangers Cowboy Action Shooters who are affiliated with the Single Action Shooting Society (SASS). We dress up in clothing that represents the clothing of the Old West or Western Movies and shoot single action revolvers, lever action rifles (in pistol calibers) and pre-1900 style shotguns (pumps or doubles), and have fun. Ladies are always welcome, this sport is not just for the boys! Our monthly matches usually consist of 4 to 6 stages or shooting scenarios. A stage will tell a story from the old west that the shooter will then act out. The shooter may be required to say a line from a western movie such as I m your huckleberry from Tombstone. The shooter will then engage the targets in the order specified. Each stage is explained to the entire posse (group of shooters) before the first shooter starts and then each shooter has the opportunity to review it again with the Range Officer just prior to shooting the stage. Targets are fairly close and shooters are scored on accuracy and speed. While having fun is very important, the most important thing is safety. All participants are required to go home with as many holes in their bodies as they arrived with. Procedures and rules have been established by RRPC and SASS to ensure the safety of the participants and spectators. Each shooter is supervised all the way through, from the loading table to the shooting line and then to the unloading table. This ensures that the firearms are only loaded at the appropriate time and with the appropriate number of shells. It also makes sure that the firearms are unloaded and clear after the shooter is finished with each stage. The match cost is $10 to shoot for RRPC members and $15 for nonmembers. Matches are held the second Saturday of each month from March November with a hiatus in August. Check the RRPC for set up and start times. Come out to watch and shoot a partial scenario after the match. It is possible to borrow guns and leather if you want to try and shoot a match. Call our POCs to work it out. 7 Page 7 V O L U M E 5, I S S U E 5 UVA Team Triumphs! In another iteration of the RRPC Geezer Squad-UVA Trap & Skeet Team Challenge matches, the Virginia team of Nick Shaffer, Tyler Hill, Martha Walters, Evan Coar, Ben Lanning, and Mark Kington, finally whipped the RRPC Squad of Bob King, Sandy Stuart, Mark Hanlon, Gene McCorkle, Jesse Davis, and Tom Templeton. New this time was the use of six man squads, versus the usual five man, and the UVA ringer may have been part of their strategy. Things started promising on 22 February. A clear day, with temperatures predicted to reach the 60 s, the UVA squad turned in a Skeet team score of 124 with Nick the high man with 23. Undaunted, the RRPC squad answered with team score of 137, a 13 point advantage. Bob was high on the RRPC squad with a clean 25 straight. Skeet Doubles found a resurgent UVA squad posting their best Doubles to date. Their team score of 125, with both Nick and Evan at 23 each, would prove to be too much for the RRPC squad. RRPC could only muster a Team Doubles score of 112, and their 13 point advantage evaporated. Mark and Jesse were tied for high on the RRPC squad at 22 each. A fine chicken salad was served up, made by that maven of cuisine, Craig DePiazzy, while the RRPC squad tried to wipe that shell-shocked look from their faces. Going in to the Traps events tied with UVA had most of the RRPC squad resigned to their defeat. Despite tightening their belts a notch, the RRPC squad only produced a team score of 118, despite 23 s by Jesse, Gene, and Tom. The UVA squad turned in a 16 yard Trap team score of 126, with Martha high at 24. Ok guys, we are only eight birds down. This time the Challenge Match second Trap phase was Handicap Trap at 20 yards, versus our usual Trap Doubles. The RRPC squad could only muster a team score of 107, despite a fine 23 by Bob. UVA posted 119 points, with Mark high at 22, to seal the match. In the end, the Trap performance by UVA was more than we could meet, and the Geezer squad went down in flames by 20 birds! For a change of pace, the RRPC squad has thoughts of actually practicing some Trap before the next encounter. And, of course, some of the UVA squad may have graduated by then. -Submitted by Robert King UVA Skeet at Work Martha up on Station One UVA Trap They are killing us! 12 Page 12 Archery (Continued) Chase Crider won his division (barebow) shooting for RRPC at the JOAD Regional Tournament in Henrico, VA on April 27, The match was a 60-arrow (20 ends) format at 18 meters. Congratulations Chase! Pictured are Chase shooting in the match and Chase with Peter Netland at the end of the match. Youth Activities The RRPC Youth Shooting Program meets on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month (except for some major holidays) from 4:00pm until 6:00pm. Any young person, years old, is invited to participate. Shooting is primarily with.22 rifles on the Indoor Range. Some shooting is also done with.22 pistols,.177 air rifles and air pistols. If there is enough interest, there might be arrangements made to shoot other firearms. The Club supplies the firearms, equipment and most of the needed supplies for this activity. One may use their own firearm and ammunition if they wish. Instruction and coaching is provided. A parent, guardian or other responsible adult must be present during the time that "their" young person is shooting. The past few months have shown a great increase in the number of young people wanting to learn about the shooting sports. Their parents have taken the time to bring them out to the club, learn the right way, and what fun they can have. The work assignment members who have assisted at these youth groups, have had such an enjoyable time, they are now returning as coaches. People from all walks of life, including current and retired combat veterans help the young people learn and improve their safe shooting skills. For further information, contact: Steve Sandow, sandow8303@comcast.net Paul Benneche, p.benneche@yahoo.com The Indoor Range is reserved for the exclusive use of this activity during its normally scheduled time, but may be open to use by Members and Associates on a space available basis, as determined by the Youth Program instructors. If you want to check and see if space on the range is available call the Club at during the regular Youth Shooting time.
