3 Page 3 V O L U M E 4, I S U U E 8 VCDL News The next VCDL meeting at RRPC will be on Tuesday, October 29. For those who attended our July 30th meeting, thank you for joining us. We had an interesting discussion about what VCDL does and what the VCDL PAC does. In a nutshell, VCDL is a Virginia specific group that represents you, as gun owners, by keeping an eye on the General Assembly. VCDL will suggest legislation to the delegates and works to prevent further infringements on our RKBA. They also compose and distribute the Candidate Survey and then publish the results for your inspection. What VCDL cannot do is to endorse a candidate for office. This is where the PAC comes in. The PAC (Political Action Committee) is able to offer opinions on candidates and incumbents based on their voting record, the answers to the survey and other factors. They can also send out mailings to educate the public on these things and can donate funds to a campaign...so long as it is a state level campaign. The PAC cannot be involved in national issues. Why is this important? The PAC and VCDL operate on two separate budgets. VCDL cannot give money to the PAC. The PAC survives entirely on donations from people like you. And while VCDL and the VCDL-PAC try very hard NOT to solicit funds, there are times when it must be done. This is one of those times. Many of the Executive Members (EMs) have pledged donations of $ There will be a lot of work that needs to be done in the upcoming election cycle. Anyone who is interested in contributing, no matter how small, please go to the web site and click the Donate button then click on the VCDL-PAC link. Thank you. FIRST Steps Pistol FIRST stands for Firearm Instruction, Responsibility, and Safety Training, a program the NRA developed to meet the need for a firearms orientation program for new gun purchasers. This FIRST Steps program is a basic course abbreviated to the most fundamental shooting skills, and the specifics of a particular model of pistol. This course, because of its narrow focus, can be completed as quickly as three hours. Students will get the NRA's The Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook and quick practical lessons on the safe use, cleaning, and storage of their pistol. The practical exercise covers a single pistol shooting position. As the number of participants or pistol types present increases, the course will take proportionally longer. The course goal is: To provide beginning shooters with an introduction to the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to own and use a specific pistol model safely. NRA FIRST Steps Pistol Orientation Lesson Plans The Lessons covered by this program: 1. Introduction to Pistol Safety, Parts, and Operation 2. Introduction to Ammunition and the Fundamentals of Pistol Shooting 3. Introduction to Pistol Shooting from the Benchrest Position 4. Introduction to Pistol Cleaning, Storage, and Training Opportunities Students will receive feedback on the live-fire exercise and a course certificate upon successful completion of the lessons. Students will receive a Basic Practical rocker upon successful demonstration of firing a qualifying group. RRPC will be offering its FIRST Steps Pistol program on the fourth Thursday of each month from January through October, 2013, inclusive, as well as the first Thursday of December, The classes are scheduled to start at 6:00PM and end no later than 10:00PM. Students are requested to show up at 5:30PM to complete administra-tive paperwork, and to bring their own handgun (a semi-auto pistol or revolver). The classes are limited to a maximum of 16 students and the cost is $15 for Club members, ($35 for non-members). Enrollment will be on a first-come, first-served basis, and advanced payment will be requested. For inquiries, or to signup, contact the Training Committee at: Training@RRPC.org. 5 Page 5 V O L U M E 4, I S U U E 8 International Defensive Pistol International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) matches promote the use of practical equipment including full charge service ammunition to solve simulated real world selfdefense scenarios. Shooters competing in IDPA events are required to use practical handguns and holsters that are truly suitable for selfdefense use. No competition only equipment is permitted in IDPA matches since the main goal is to test the skill and ability of an individual, not his equipment or gamesmanship. It is a perfect opportunity to practice skills you may need if you have a CCW and carry outside of a range setting. It is not training but practice of what you already know. It is a good environment for new shooters to learn and work on their skills in a Building & Grounds Reminder safe and supervised environment. Matches are held at RRPC on the 3rd Saturday of every month except December. Registration is from 8:00-11:00AM. 9:00 squads are assigned by 8:50. Shooting usually wraps up by 3:00pm. April and August classif i e r ma tches require p re - registration. For shooters new to RRPC and/or IDPA there is a mandatory new shooter briefing that begins promptly at 8:30AM. There is also a permanent steel target. The rules as far as going down range to set paper targets have not changed. If you need to set a paper target, you must first obtain a ceasefire from all shooters on the lower ranges, this means the Plinking Range, the Pistol Range, the Rifle Range and the AP&T Range. You must do this in-person. After obtaining the cease-fire, you must turn on the warning bell using the switch on the Long- Range bench (this also turns on strobes at the ranges). Now you may walk (or jog) down range to set your target. It is not possible to drive down range, you must proceed on foot. Once you have returned from setting your target, you must go to all of the other ranges to let any shooters present know that you are back and that they may resume shooting. Finally, turn off the warning bell. You may not use any armor-piercing or steel jacketed bullets. It is your responsibility to know what you are using, destruction of RRPC property will not be tolerated. You may fire from the bench or adjacent to the bench in standing, kneeling, sitting or prone positions. This is a center-fire rifle range only. No hand guns are allowed. No rifles shooting rim-fire cartridges or pistol cartridges are allowed. If you use this range, you are responsible for being able to hit the target. This is not where you sight -in. Safety is our first concern. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at safety@rrpc.org. Robert Gettleman Chairman, RRPC Safety Committee TACTICAL SHOOTERS GROUP (TSG) The RRPC Tactical Shooters Group [TSG] meets informally on 1.30pm at the AP+T [formally the PPC] range. The TSG's primary focus is the practical deployment of the tactical carbine [aka "black rifles"] for sport, duty and/or self-defense. We seek to improve our skills with a carbine/rifle in a dynamic environment utilizing modern techniques and skillbuilding drills as taught by some of the world's top firearms trainers [i.e., Viking Tactics, Vick-ers Tactical, EAG Tactical, etc.]. We also incorporate practical pistol in our practice sessions and have recently added informal Saturday night pistol practice on the indoor range. Beginning in May, we will be incorporating a "Fundamentals Day" [day TBD] on a regular basis to help introduce shooters to the TSG. It is designed to bring the novice and seasoned shooter alike up to speed on current rifle tech-nique as it pertains to a "tactical" environment [i.e., zeroing, gun handling, equipment briefing, etc.]. If you are interested in the learning more, we invite you to join the TSG google group to be kept in the loop on our activities. Please contact: Ron Alabanza edcholster@gmail.com or Carlos Santillian carlosdep@gmail.com and we can get you sorted. The RRPC TSG is open to all associates and members in good standing and we invite/encourage all levels of shooters to join us for skill-building and fun.

A parent, guardian or other responsible adult must be present during the time that "their" young person is shooting. The past few months have shown a great increase in the number of young people wanting to learn about the shooting sports. Their parents have taken the time to bring them out to the club, learn the right way, and what fun they can have. The work assignment members who have assisted at these youth groups, have had such an enjoyable time, they are now returning as coaches. People from all walks of life, including current and retired combat veterans help the young people learn and improve their safe shooting skills.
