6 FOREWORD Motocross is widely regarded as the most popular off-road motorcycling competition and the sport counts many passionate fans worldwide who approach every new season with high expectations and a keen appetite for thrilling races and exciting rivalries! Motocross is an important part of their lives and they will be watching the competition, whether along the track or through different forms of media. The FIM Motocross World Championships main battleground is Europe, with its difficult economic situation, and this could be expected to put a brake on the sport s development. Indeed, things are not easy, and to keep up the momentum, we need to raise and strengthen the profile of our motocross competitions. In recent years, much effort has gone into promoting the series as well as enhancing them in various ways through media and TV coverage, Internet presence, marketing, fan interaction, etc. We, the FIM Motocross Commission, the FIM Championship Promoter Youthstream, the National Federations, the organizers and the manufacturers, the teams, the industry and the media, owe it to the entire motocross community to keep working for this much loved sport. And then there are the riders who, with their fantastic riding skills and breathtaking battles on the tracks, will continue to draw the crowds at each event and keep them on their toes was a very good year and 2014 could be even better! Will the likes of Cairoli, Herlings and Fontanesi continue to rule over motocrossland? They will surely be challenged hard and there will be some tough battles for motocross supremacy! That is what we, and all the fans, are eager to see. So let me welcome you all to the 2014 FIM Motocross World Championships and wish you a fantastic season. Ladies and Gentlemen, start the engines Vito Ippolito FIM President venue, located in the very eastern part of Europe. The comeback of the legendary Talavera de la Reina circuit in Spain will be welcomed by many fans. There will be even more GPs in more continents in the years to come, which matches exactly the direction FIM as well as our partner Youthstream would like to see the future development. Motocross is probably the most widely spread motorsport in the world. Everywhere you go - there are Motocross activities in almost every country of the world. It is just logical that the FIM MXGP/MX2 Motocross World Championship has to be present on all continents. Welcome to the 2014 FIM MXGP/MX2 Motocross World Championship! The FIM Motocross World Championship is, without any doubt, the best and most exciting Motocross series in the world. Top riders, top action, top tracks, top organization and promotion - we cannot ask for more! In a nutshell: 18 rounds, GPs in Asia, Europe and South America, the fastest riders, factory bikes, 100% pure action or, in other words, Motocross at its very, very best. There are new as well as proven stops on the world tour: The new venues in South America will add a lot of value to the Championship: Goiania in Brazil and Leon in Mexico. Dimitrov in Ukraine is another new And thanks to the largest TV package in the history of Motocross you can watch the GPs almost everywhere. In HD, of course! The absolute highlight of the season will be, as every year, the greatest and most important Motocross event in the world: the FIM Motocross of Nations. Can Team Belgium defend the title in the Olympic Games of Motocross in Kegums/Latvia? Will Team USA strike back after they have lost the crown in the last two years? We all have to wait and see... 7 Dear MXGP Friends, Over the last few years, especially last year and this year, the Motocross World Championship has made large bounds ahead and thanks to the tremendous work made by Youthstream in cooperation with the FIM, UEM, organizers, manufactures, teams, riders, media, sponsors and to the great support received from the MXGP fans today Motocross has become one of the most popular sports in the world. Thanks to the modern tools which have been developed, MXGP is being distributed worldwide providing fans from everywhere with the possibility to really enter our world and feel to be a part of it all. The impressive 2013 TV coverage and statistics, of which was more than 1.2 billion TV viewers for more than 4,200 hours of broadcasting, will be significantly increased for In 2014 every continent will be covered via major broadcasters: Europe on Eurosport, USA on CBS Sport, Latin America on FOX Sport, Middle East and Africa on Al Jazeera Sport, Asia and Oceania on FOX Sport, and in addition to that the local broadcasters, making 2014 the best year for TV coverage. The TV production will continue to be in HD and 20 cameras will be providing TV viewers with thrilling images. You will be pleased to see that Youthstream became actively present on the main social networks in 2013, the reason for this is because the average age of MXGP followers was high and something needed to be done. By being easily accessible to young potential fans we have seen the interest in MXGP is growing rapidly. You can find MXGP on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube where MXGP has its own channel. The MXGP official website will change its appearance at the beginning of the season, providing even more information than before and it will be simple for all users. MXGP-TV.com is where you can watch entire events live including all the World and European Championship classes and of course the famous Motocross of Nations; on MXGP-TV.com you can also find programs on Youthstream promoted events, like the Junior Motocross World Championship, the Motocross of European Nations and the Snowcross World Championship. MXGP Mag came out for the first time during the 2013 MXoN in Germany and it offers an interactive and fun way to be informed about inside info. Thanks to these innovative moves we are already seeing more and more interest from youth in the Motocross world. It s the first year MXGP Academy exists and its fabulous seeing the number of potential talented riders attending these training schools. MXGP Academy prepares young enthusiastic riders to make the step into the professional world with expert advice on a technical aspect and management. Youthstream promotes a number of Championships including the MXGP World Championship, the MX2 World Championship, the Motocross of Nations, Women s Motocross World Championship, the Veteran Motocross World Cup, the Junior Motocross World Championship, the European Motocross Championships (65cc, 85cc, 125cc, 150cc and 250cc), the Motocross of European Nations and the Snowcross World Championship. Amongst these Championships there were more than 2,800 participants taking part. There are 140 people working for Youthstream for the organization, media and management of these Championships, plus an average of 500 more people providing services for the local organizer for each GP making a total of about 9,000 people. During this moment of crisis Youthstream is extremely proud to actively participate on a social aspect by assuring more than 1,000 jobs linked to the events it promotes. Youthstream s work is not only what you see (television, media, marketing, sponsorship, and of course the racing) but it has a lot of backstage work that is less visible such as the organization of the event, the designing, engineering and construction of the race track, the logistics, and hospitality. We also manage the media center, the paddock, passes, traffic, security, the management of teams and riders entries and their needs, the TV production and postproduction, the time-keeping, travel and hotels, and in cooperation with FIM we take care of sporting issues and the implementation of the Regulations. For the globalization of our sport, which ensures the Championships stability and credibility, Youthstream endeavors constantly to create interest in all continents. The MXGP market (events, market, sponsors, industry, TV and media coverage) is divided into 48% in Europe, 24% in USA, 9% Asia and the Middle East, 8% in Latino America, 5% in Africa 4% in Russia and 2% in Oceania. For 2014 Qatar, Doha, is once again the MXGP series opener, then the tour goes on to the exotic round in Si Racha in Thailand and Brazil is the next stop before returning to the traditional European circuits. In September MXGP will be returning to Brazil to a new venue in the State of Goiania, from there Championship moves on to a location appearing for the first time on the Motocross World Championship; Leon in Mexico, then we hope many MXGP followers will make it out to Latvia for the MXoN and to discover a truly wonderful country. There is a lot of interest shown towards our sport from every continent and we are negotiating to bring MXGP to more countries in the years to come. 114 HISTORY HISTORY OF THE FIM MOTOCROSS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP The history of Motocross begins in the early 20th century when the first events took place in Great Britain, specifically during the 1920s when the first competitions known as scrambles were held. Once the Second World War ended, the sport started to grow from a national to an international level with the very first team event known as Motocross des Nations, racing with 500cc machines and taking place in 1947 in the Netherlands. Although the Belgian rider Auguste Mingels was faster, the team classification prevailed and Great Britain claimed the first Trophy. From then on this special event was held regularly every year, and mostly dominated by the British team until the end of the 1960s. The Trophée des Nations, team event for 250cc machines, was added in 1961, and the Coupe des Nations (for teams with 125cc motorcycles) in In 1984, the rules were changed: the three classes would race together, each time entering three riders. Currently America is the most successful Nation in this event which they have won 20 times. Back in the 50s, on the individual level, Motocross started to grow fast, with many events held in various countries. This led the FIM to introduce the first European Championship in That maiden series was open to 500cc motorcycles and the first winner was Belgian Victor Leloup onboard an FN machine. He was followed by August Mingels in 53 and 54, before British riders John Draper and Leslie Archer took over. But another country was also reaching the top in Motocross individual and team in those days, beside Great Britain and Belgium, that country was Sweden From European to World Championship. Joel Robert (250cc) and Roger De Coster (500cc) make their name. After five years of European Championship, Motocross took an important step forward with the series being promoted to the World Championship status in 1957 winner was Swedish Bill Nilsson onboard an AJS machine. Still in 1957 the first European Cup for 250cc motorcycles was created to match the popularity of this upcoming discipline. This Cup would last only two years to be promoted to the European Championship status in Three years later in 1962, the 250cc class had its first World Championship with the eventual winner being legendary Husqvarna mounted Torsten Hallman from Sweden. The Swedish won the Title for two consecutive years until upcoming talent Joel Robert from Belgium steered his CZ to victory collecting the first of six titles - a record which would remain unbeaten until Robert would win another five 250cc World Titles from 1968 until 1972, the year of birth of his countryman Stefan Everts, the man who will break all the records 30 years later. As Japanese manufacturers entered the series in the late 60s, Joel Robert was the first World Championship winner onboard such a machine as he steered the Suzuki to victory in the 250cc class in One year later Suzuki would win another 250cc World Title with Robert but success came also in the 500cc class. Now a myth in the sport, in 1971 Roger De Coster and Suzuki won their first 500cc Championship which was also the first of five World Titles for De Coster all in the 500cc class The arrival of the 125cc World Championship. In 1973 another class, the 125cc, had its dedicated European Championship, which was won for two consecutive years by Belgian André Malherbe on a Zundapp. In 1975 it became a World Championship and Gaston Rahier won the Title straight away onboard a Suzuki, the first manufacturer to ever claim a Title in all three classes. Malherbe would exploit his early 125cc experience to collect the 500cc World Title in 1980 and 1981 as Belgium was shaping up like the most talented country for Motocross. In 1975 another Belgian, Harry Everts, took his first 250cc World Title. He will win another three Championships in his career before retiring and raising his child Stefan. In 1982 another star entered the World Motocross Championship with Eric Geboers winning the 125cc Championship after Everts had dominated it for three consecutive years before Everts, Japanese Akira Watanabe took the 125cc crown in Geboers would storm through the field to remarkably win all three World Titles 125cc, 250cc and 500cc granting him the nickname of Mr. 875, the sum of 125, 250 and 500. Basically Eric Geboers was the first man to ever win one World Title in each category. Georges Jobe and Dave Thorpe would also write their names in the record books of the World Champions in these years, while exceptional young guns would come up to establish the base of the next decades of World Motocross. French Jean Michel Bayle and Italian Alex Puzar won their first titles in 1988 and in 1990 respectively. As Puzar went on for more success in the series, Bayle first moved to Supercross, then to Road Racing collecting strong results and becoming a legend for his incredible talent in motorsports. 114

115 HISTORY New generation four stroke machines enter and win World Titles. Stefan Everts begins his winning streak. This decade of World Motocross started with the Title of Stefan Everts, currently the most successful Motocross rider ever with 10 World Titles and 101 GP wins to his credit. Onboard a Suzuki, Everts son of Harry Everts - became World Champion in the 125cc class in 1991 to be succeeded by Greg Albertijn in 1992 as the latter became the first South African to collect a World Title in Motocross. Albertijn would win other two World Titles in the 250cc class as the 125cc class saw Italian Alessio Chicco Chiodi win the Championship for three consecutive years from 1997 until Sebastien Tortelli, another of Everts main rivals throughout his career together with Albertijn, also passed by the 125cc World Championship, which he won in 1996, before winning in 250cc in French countryman Frederic Bolley succeeded to Tortelli in 1999 and 2000 winning two consecutive 250cc Titles. With new generation four stroke machines becoming popular in the GP campaign in 1999 came the first World Title. Yamaha mounted Andrea Bartolini was the first rider to win a Championship with such a machine beating Joel Smets, the 500cc Title winner in the previous two years and also in Youthstream celebrates Stefan Everts and the new generation during the years of records. Women and Veterans racing dedicated series. The last years have seen Motocross develop very quickly courtesy of the professional work of new promoter Youthstream headed by President Giuseppe Luongo, a man who had been involved in Motocross since Youthstream took the World Motocross Championships and the Motocross of Nations to the next level as the series increased the visits overseas and benefitted from a strong TV and media coverage. The 250cc class was renamed MX1 hosting 450cc four stroke machines as the former 500cc class became an open class, the MX3. The professional set up was matched by excellent racing and new talents going through the ranks such as Steve Ramon, Ben Townley, Antonio Tony Cairoli, Tyla Rattray, Tommy Searle just to name a few. to take his 10th World Title and his 101st GP victory in 2006, his last year of professional racing before retiring and becoming Team Manager for the factory KTM Motocross Team. Everts set the records, which are now the ultimate challenge of the whole younger generations of professional Motocross racers The youngsters leave their mark on the FIM Motocross World Championship. Philippaerts, Cairoli, Desalle, Musquin, Roczen, Herlings and many more set the Championship on fire. These years the young guns of the FIM Motocross World Championship have established their authority on the series. Ramon succeeded to Everts in the MX1 series in 2007 after the season s dominator Coppins was taken out by a shoulder injury. Italian Cairoli took back the MX2 Title, as 2006 World Champion Pourcel was unable to defend the crown due to an up and down season which ended in a severe back injury. After two years of team management, Stefan Everts celebrated the first World Title with Tyla Rattray winning the MX2 World Championship in That was also the year David Philippaerts won his maiden World Title in the MX1 despite it being only his second year in contention. Year by year the level and speed that Grand Prix riders ride at progresses and now the most skilled ones are aiming to beat the older generations records. In 2010 Cairoli decided to ride the revolutionary KTM 350cc on which the Italian claimed his fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh World Titles in four consecutive years. The Italian is breaking all the records, and continues to do so as he has won sixty-three Grand Prix s and sits second on the list of most Grand Prix wins, thirtyeight behind The King Stefan Everts and now six ahead of Belgian legend Joël Smets. Although Cairoli will return to defend his title in the MXGP class (previously named MX1) this season as the hot favorite, other great riders such as Clement Desalle, Gautier Paulin, Evgeny Bobryshev, Tommy Searle and Jeremy Van Horebeek to name a few, will be looking to stop him from taking his eighth FIM Motocross World Title. In the MX2, young German talent Ken Roczen joined KTM and obtained his maiden World Title in 2011 in front of his home crowd in Gaildorf, Germany. The talented German also wrote his name in the motocross history of his country before moving to the USA to live his American dream. With Roczen gone, 2012 and 13 have been dominated by Dutch phenomenon Jeffrey Herlings. At the ripe age of eighteen, Herlings has already added two FIM MX2 World Titles to his list of career achievements, which he obtained with two near perfect seasons will see Herlings line-up for his third consecutive MX2 World Title with his main goal being to win every Grand Prix. 123 HISTORY MONSTER ENERGY FIM MOTOCROSS OF NATIONS 67 YEARS OF HISTORY FIRST YEARS: DOMINANCE OF THE BRITISH TEAM Motocross, known as scramble when it was invented in the 20s, developed quickly in the 30s. After the war, the FIM elevated this sport at international level by giving birth to the Motocross des Nations (official title in French, run with 500cc motorcycles), a classic event which has been run annually ever since. The inaugural event was held near The Hague, in the Netherlands, on 20 July Three nations were invited the Netherlands, Belgium and Great Britain. The Belgian rider Auguste Mingels was the fastest, but the A team of Great Britain with Bill Nicholson (BSA), Fred Rist (BSA) and Bob Ray (Ariel) won the first team title, ahead of the Belgian B squad. The second Nations contest took place in August 1948 in La Fraineuse, close to the Belgian city of Spa. National federations of France, Sweden and Luxembourg were also invited for an event dominated by the local team. Nic Jansen, Marcel Cox and Andre Milhoux took first, second and fifth places, clinching the first Trophy for Belgium. At the end of August 1949 it was the turn of Great Britain to host the final competition of the decade at Brands Hatch. Great Britain won the competition for the second time, thus keeping the Cup indefinitely. The ACU then donated another Cup for the competition s winning team. The Vice-President of the FIM International Sporting Commission Peter Chamberlain had always been a strong supporter of Motocross, and worked a great deal on behalf of the national teams competition. After he passed away in 1954, the cup was officially named after him. In the 50s, the British dominance was quite strong: seven victories out of 10 in the Motocross des Nations before The only exceptions were the victories of Belgium in 1951 and Sweden in 1955 and A competition for 250cc machines, named the Trophée des Nations, was created by the FIM as from the 1961 season. Victories in the first years were clinched by the Swedes after two initial successes for Great Britain. In the 500cc team event Great Britain lost against Sweden in 1961/62, but then won five years in a row, reaching the number of 14 victories in 20 years, however their last win was in 1967 and it would take 27 years before they won again. HARD FIGHTS In Kishinev then in the Soviet Union the Russian team took the Chamberlain Trophy for the first time. Then Belgium finally won again the Trophy in Farleigh Castle (1969) after chasing after it for 18 years, with legendary names such as Roger de Coster, Joel Robert and Sylvain Geboers. The 70s saw a big change at the mechanical level, with the massive arrival of Japanese manufacturers. Suzuki started first, quickly followed by Yamaha, Honda and Kawasaki. The first years of the decade were shared between Sweden and Belgium. In Sweden 1974, behind the local team, a US team appeared for the first time on the rostrum, in the second place, composed of Jim Pomeroy (Bultaco), Brad Lackey (Husqvarna), Marty Tripes (Husqvarna) and Jimmy Weinert (Kawasaki), just ahead of the Russian squad including 250cc World Champion Guennady Moisseev. In 1975 in Czechoslovakia, the local team finished ahead of Belgium despite the presence of three World Champions, Roger de Coster, Harry Everts and Gaston Rahier - and Great Britain. Two wins of the Belgian team preceded the second victory of a Russian team, still with Guennady Moisseev. In the Trophée des Nations contest, Belgium conquered all titles except one (Russia in 1979) as of 1969 until In the Motocross des Nations Belgium again won two titles (79, 80) before the American domination became effective. Having missed both events in the two previous years, the American team arrived at Lommel in Belgium in September 1981 for the Trophée des Nations with four Honda riders managed by former World Champion Roger de Coster. Danny Laporte, Chuck Sun, Johnny O Mara and Donnie Hansen destroyed the opposition, and one week later won again in the Motocross des Nations in Bielstein, Germany. Changes were made in the team from one year to the next, but it did not change anything. The American field was full of top riders during the 80s, and De Coster s team got eight victories (four in each team competition) in four years. In 1980 the FIM decided to introduce a third Motocross team contest with 125cc motorcycles: the Coupe des Nations. The Italian team led by Michele Rinaldi won the first two titles, followed by Belgium (with Eric Geboers) and the Netherlands (with Kees Van der Ven and John Van de Berk). 123

124 HISTORY NEW FORMAT In 1985 a new format combining all three classes in a single Motocross des Nations was introduced by the FIM, gathering all three classes (125cc, 250cc and 500cc) with one rider in each class and three races per event: 125/500, 125/250, 250/500. Nothing could stop the Americans though - this would only happen in 1994, after 17 consecutive victories (13 in the Motocross des Nations, and the last four of the Trophée des Nations), against Great Britain, in Roggenburg, Switzerland. Their teams always integrated world-recognized top riders. Danny Magoo Chandler won all four heats in the team contests in 1982, but perhaps the greatest win of all came at Maggiora in 1986 when America s trio of David Bailey, Ricky Johnson and Johnny O Mara went through all three heats unbeaten by the rest of the world. After Great Britain s win in 1994, it was the turn of Belgium to be back at the top of the competition in 1995 with Stefan Everts, Joel Smets and Marnicq Bervoets. But the Americans were still there. In 96 in Jerez, the team driven by multi-champion Jeremy McGrath beat the French and Belgian teams. Then, the US team would be off the rostrum for three consecutive years, which saw two Belgian wins and the first crown for Italy (with World Champions Andrea Bartolini and Alessio Chiodi, and also Claudio Federici), in 1999 in Brazil, ahead of France and Belgium. Once again the Americans were back in 2000 in St Jean d Angély, led by their new top rider Ricky Carmichael. In Namur 2001, it was finally the turn of the French team to clinch their first victory (with David Vuillemin, Yves Demaria and Luigi Séguy), beating the Belgians on their home track. Italy won a perturbed 2002 edition, and Belgium - still with the record holder in individual World titles Stefan Everts - won the 2003 and 2004 contest, before the US comeback in the last five editions, James Stewart having replaced Carmichael as the team s top rider in Carmichael was back in 2007, celebrating his last Motocross appearance in Budds Creek while Stewart was part of the 2008 winning team. In 2009 the event came back to Italy after an absence of 23 years, this time in Franciacorta. The American Team got the Trophy again but failed in repeating their countrymen s performance in 1986 at Maggiora. The trio made of Ryan Dungey, Jake Weimer and Ivan Tedesco struggled against nations such as France, Belgium and Italy. Eventually USA won from France and Belgium while a crash of Italy s top rider and multi-time World Champion Antonio Cairoli in heat three ended the team s hopes of victory. In 2010 the FIM Motocross of Nations was back in the USA where the home riders (Team USA) obtained their 21st Chamberlain Trophy in Lakewood, Denver, thanks to the performance of Ryan Dungey, Trey Canard and Andrew Short. The German team, who was leading the standings after race two thanks to the superb racing of youngster Ken Roczen and Max Nagl, were finally second followed by the Belgian team in third. The following year it was a turning point for the event, as Monster Energy played an important role and became the title sponsor of the 2011 FIM Motocross of Nations. Saint Jean d Angely in France was the chosen scenario for the 65th edition of the MXoN and the French fans witnessed a dramatic ending. The French team got into the final heat leading the classification with nine points advantage over team USA, but in the decisive heat Pourcel ended up with an unfortunate DNF allowing the Americans to obtain their 22nd victory ahead of France and Australia, who were very consistent throughout the whole event. In 2012, the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations went back to Lommel, where Team USA started to dominate the event beating the Belgians on home soil in During the 2012 edition Team USA struggled a lot on the deep sand of Lommel and they could only finish on the third step of the podium, breaking their impressive seventh winning streak. The German team was the most consistent and obtained their maiden Chamberlain Trophy, while the home team finished on a well-deserved second position. Last year, the 2013 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations in Teutschenthal, Germany, was probably one of the most anticipated events ever in the history of motocross. Heading into the event Team Germany would be defending the crown on their home turf, while Team Belgium and USA would be lining up with hopes of redeeming themselves after a bitter defeat the previous year in Lommel, Belgium. While the pressure was laid heavily upon the local boys Team Germany s Max Nagl, Ken Roczen and Dennis Ullrich, a crash which resulted in injury for Dennis Ullrich soon blew the teams hopes of a podium finish, leaving the race to be duked out by Team Belgium and Team USA. With the final waving of the chequered flag it was surprisingly Team Belgium who narrowly took the victory ahead of Team USA. While the biggest surprise was Italy s third place finish after their captain, seven-time FIM Motocross World Champion, Antonio Cairoli dominated both his races for the second year in a row. Throughout the years this event, whose English name - Motocross of Nations was officially adopted in 2003, has become well known for being the peak of the FIM Motocross World Championship season, as the Franciacorta edition in 2009 further confirmed. The 68th edition of the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations will take place in Kegums, Latvia. Kegums is a soft-based circuit, which could in fact be well suited to the Belgian s, as it is widely known that the Belgian s enjoy racing in the sand. But as always, there is no writing off the other strong teams, USA, France, Italy and Germany as they are also sure to bring their A game. In the meantime, we look forward to seeing what season 2014 will bring. 124

140 RIDERS PROFILE VALENTIN GUILLOD, 2013 EMX250 EUROPEAN CHAMPION Valentin Guillod has been on the radar now for a few years. Although the years prior to 2013 saw him face his fair share of hardship, it is safe to say the super talented Swiss has bounced back and is now showing his true potential. Twentyone-years-old and ready to take on the world, the Guillod Motorsports KTM rider dominated the 2013 European EMX250 Championship winning all but two rounds. After a fabulous season in the EMX250 class where he was crowned European EMX250 Champion, Guillod went on to race for Team Switzerland at the most epic event of the year, the Motocross of Nations. Despite racing a 450SX-F machine, Guillod blew everyone away when he extravagantly matched the pace of many seasoned and accomplished MXGP pro s. After such an impressive year, Guillod has been blessed with the opportunity to join the highly acclaimed Standing Construct KTM team in 2014, where he will contend for the FIM Motocross MX2 World title. Valentin Guillod s love for motocross was discovered on his fourth birthday when his father gave him the gift he so badly longed for, a PW50. As Guillod grew, his speed improved, but unfortunately school commitments only allowed him to ride on Wednesday afternoons and at the weekends. In 2009, Guillod caught a break and flew off to the USA for four months where he caught the eye of motocross great Sebastian Tortelli. After receiving a compliment from one of his heroes (Tortelli), Guillod trained hard and in 2010 was crowned Swiss champion and EMX250 bronze medallist. After making significant progress throughout his career Guillod was given the opportunity to join a good team and line up in the FIM Motocross MX2 World Championship in 2011 and Although the team and material was good, Guillod was admittedly not ready and ended up side lined for both seasons due to injury. Desperate to make a come back and show the world what he s got, Guillod and his support system decided the European EMX250 championship was the way forward. Since the championship only began in May, Guillod was able to make a full recovery as well as have time to prepare. Come May 2013, the evidence was clear. EMX250 racing was the right step for Guillod as he dominated the majority of the championship to be crowned 2013 European EMX250 Champion. Armed with a CRF150 (kindly supplied by Honda), Grigoletto took one overall victory and two third place finishes to be crowned the first ever European EMX150 champion. Along with making history at the ripe age of fifteen, the young Italian talent was also awarded the opportunity to race the 2014 EMX250 Championship on a bike supplied by well-known Italian team Gariboldi Honda. After such an amazing achievement, Filippo Grigoletto has marked his name as one to look out for in the near future. 143 RIDERS PROFILE PAULS JONASS, 2013 EMX125 EUROPEAN CHAMPION Pauls Jonass is fast becoming one of the most recognized young hopefuls in Europe. In 2013 the sixteen-year-old Latvian dominated the European EMX125 championship, taking home seven from a possible eight race wins to claim the EMX125 title with one round to go. While the EMX125 championship is actually a nine round series, the ninth round saw the young Latvian step up to the EMX250 class to test his speed. Remarkably, Jonass qualified second in his heat and went on to take fourth overall in the final. It all began for Pauls Jonass at the tender age of four and a half after he took his cousins LEM 50 for a spin. Six months later, the little Latvian entered his first motocross race and won. From there on, Jonass was hooked and began his rise to the top, leaving a trail of impressive results in his wake. After multiple Latvian, Lithuanian and Estonian championship titles, Jonass took the next step in his blossoming career and entered the European EMX65 championship where he defeated a few wellknown 65cc stars to be crowned EMX65 champion. In 2008 Jonass was a strong contender in the Dutch Championship s 85cc class where despite his small wheels, managed to finish the series in fourth overall saw Pauls Jonass enter his first FIM Junior World Championship race, there he raced his Suzuki sponsored RM85 to an outstanding fourth place. The following year, Jonass reached another milestone in his career when he was crowned 2011 FIM Junior 85cc Motocross World Champion. For the EMX150 Championship, the maximum age of the rider is 14 years old at the date of the first event in this Championship. However he/she may continue in this Championship if he/she has his/her 15th birthday after the first round. All riders must be registered with Honda Europe for this championship. Riders can use 2 motorcycles during the weekend which have been controlled at technical verification. The final choice of the motorcycle to be used in a race must be made 10 minutes before the start.
