Partly for this reason, the UCI awarded Gelderland the UCI Bike Region label as a bike-friendly province in Sporting events enliven Gelderland and make the region attractive for athletes, visitors and businesses. We are especially proud that our country, and the city of Apeldoorn in particular, will once again host the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in This edition, like the Track Cycling World Championships in 2011, the Track Cycling European Cup in 2011 and 2013, and the Tissot UCI Track Cycling World Cup 2016, will be held in the multifunctional Omnisport Apeldoorn sports centre. We expect to welcome thousands of cycling enthusiasts from the Netherlands and abroad here! The organisation of these world championships is once again an ideal opportunity to put the Netherlands on the map in the field of sports and to underscore the importance of strong cycling events for the Gelderland province and the municipality of Apeldoorn. The province of Gelderland, the municipality of Apeldoorn, the Royal Dutch Cycling Union and organiser Libema Profcycling have therefore teamed up to make this international sporting event a great success. The start of the Giro in Apeldoorn in 2016 and the recent Giro victory of Tom Dumoulin have encouraged this enthusiasm. The fact that the world championships in track cycling are once again coming to the Netherlands/Apeldoorn in 2018 completes the picture! We expect that between 28 February and 4 March 2018, Omnisport will once again fill up with thousands of enthusiastic cycling lovers from home and abroad. They will cheer on their favourites, including the Dutch cyclists Theo Bos (five-time world champion), Elis Ligtlee (Olympic champion) and Matthijs Büchli (Olympic silver medallist), during the electrifying races. THE EVENT Cycling is alive! Alongside the most famous races such as the Giro d Italia, Tour de France and Vuelta a España, the UCI Track Cycling World Championships have also been gaining prestige in recent years, both nationally and internationally. It is not for nothing that cycling is, after football, the most-watched sport on television in the Netherlands. With the possible participation of Kirsten Wild (two-time world champion), Shanne Braspennincx, Laurine van Riessen, Jeffrey Hoogland and the new generation of sprint stars, including Harry Lavreysen (world championships silver medallist and European U23 champion), Kyra Lamberink (European U23 team sprint champion) and Hetty van de Wouw (European U23 champion), we expect a thrilling event. The TV audience for the UCI Track Cycling World Championships grew almost six-fold from 2013 in Minsk to 2016 in London. The total broadcast time of the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in 2016 was 861 hours, of which 275 hours were live! The host country, England, aired 47 hours and 48 minutes. The greatest amount of broadcast time was achieved in Hong Kong, with 133 hours and 15 minutes.
