Senior Infiniti Thomas-Waheed notched her 1,000th career point in the win over Vermont with a jump shot in the third quarter. She became the 33rd player in program history to reach the milestone. She ranks second in the Patriot League in scoring with 18.1 points per game. Sophomore Lauren Manis leads the Patriot League with 18.3 points per game and ranks fifth in rebounds per game with 8.6. She set a new career-high with 28 points in the loss at Hofstra, and recorded the 13th double-double of her career against Dartmouth. In the win at Colgate, senior Tricia Byrne set a new career-high with 19 points. SERIES QUICK HITS The Crusaders are all-time against Lehigh. Manis also added six rebounds with three steals and two blocks, while shooting 4-for-7 from three-point range. Senior Infiniti Thomas-Waheed added 14 points with seven rebounds for Holy Cross (6-7, 1-1). Senior Katie Doherty added nine points, hitting three of five shots from behind the arc. Lafayette (5-7, 1-1) was led by Olivia Martino, who notched 17 points while shooting 4-for-9. Natalie Kucowski earned a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. The Crusaders shot 31.0% (22-71) from the field, while the Leopards hit 42.6% (23-54) of their shots. Lafayette held a narrow edge in rebounding, The lead changed a total of five times, while the score was tied on six different occasions. SCOUTING REPORT ON LEHIGH Lehigh enters Friday night s game at 8-5 with a 2-0 mark in Patriot League play. They have earned conference victories over Lafayette (70-45) and Navy (66-63). Last season, Lehigh went overall and 5-13 in the Patriot League. They were eliminated in the first round of the Patriot League Tournament by Loyola (Md.), Quinci Mann leads the Mountain Hawks offense, averaging 13.3 points per game. Camryn Buhr has been the leading rebounder for Lehigh, averaging 6.7 boards per game. Head coach Sue Troyan is in her 23rd season with the Mountain Hawks. UP NEXT... Army West Point and defending Patriot League champion Bucknell were both selected as the preseason favorites in the conference s preseason poll. Both programs received 140 points in the voting process along with seven first-place votes. American was selected third in the poll, receiving 134 points in the voting process and five first-place votes. Coming in fourth was Navy with 119 points and one first-place vote, while Boston University was selected fifth with 91 points. Rounding out the rest of the preseason poll were Lehigh (seventh, 64 points), Colgate (eighth, 55 points), Loyola (Md.) (ninth, 54 points) and Lafayette (10th, 22 points). MAN, OH MANIS Sophomore Lauren Manis, who was named the Patriot League s Rookie of the Year and Second Team All-Patriot League in , ranked second on the team with 13.3 points per game while leading the squad with 7.6 rebounds per game. She scored in double digits 24 times on the year, while posting 20 or more points on four occasions while adding eight double doubles. In the loss to Hofstra, Manis registered a new career-high in scoring with 28 points while shooting 11-for-20 from the field. TO INFINITI AND BEYOND Senior Infiniti Thomas-Waheed scored her 1,000th career point in the win over Vermont with a jumper in the third quarter. She became the 33rd player in program history to reach the milestone, and the first since Lisa Mifsud 16. Thomas-Waheed tallied her second double-double of the season, and fifth of her career with 24 points and 10 rebounds against Vermont. DOHERTY READY TO CONTINUE HER IMPACT Senior Katie Doherty returns to serve as a team captain for the second-straight year in the season. Doherty was an Academic All-Patriot League selection in Last year Doherty posted 7.4 points per game while ranking second on the team with 59 assists. She also posted 41 steals on the year while averaging 3.6 rebounds per game. Doherty was named to the Academic All-Patriot League team the each of the past two seasons, and was also named to the All-Rookie team as a freshman. BYRNE BABY, BYRNE Senior Tricia Byrne also returns as a second-year captain for Holy Cross in Last year she averaged 8.6 points per game while leading the Crusaders with 90 assists on the year. Byrne also led the team in steals, totaling 56 for the season. So far this season she has scored in double figures six times, and ranks third on the team with 23 assists. In the win at Colgate, Byrne earned a new career-high with 19 points. SOPHOMORES AIMING FOR NEW HEIGHTS In additions to returning PL Rookie of the Year Lauren Manis, the Crusaders also welcome back four talented sophomores in Madalyn Smith, Kathryn Pedi, Nicole Morris and Megan Swords; who will look to have a big impact this season. Smith posted 132 points on the season last year, averaging 21.4 minutes per game at guard. She also added 58 assists to rank third on the Crusaders, and posted 16 steals. Pedi and Morris will both look to have an impact at guard as well this year. Pedi added 38 points on the season in , while Morris posted 34 points and 21 assists. Swords will also return to the lineup after missing part of the season due to an injury. She totaled 23 points and added 36 rebounds. CRUSADERS WELCOME THREE FRESHMEN Holy Cross welcomes three freshmen to its squad for the campaign. This year s freshman class includes Jenay Faulkner, Mia Mazza and Shannone Murphy. Faulkner was a four-year varsity basketball player at Greencastle-Antrim, where she finished her high school career as the school s all-time leading scorer, and set a pair of school records for single-game three pointers (9) and points in a single game (38). Mazza was a four-year varsity starter at St. Francis, where she helped lead her team to its first state regional championship since Murphy competed four years on the varsity basketball team at Watertown, where she was named Boston Herald All-Scholastic, Boston Globe All-Scholastic, Middlesex League Most Valuable Player and earned Middlesex League All-Star honors all four years. CRUSADERS AIM FOR BANNER 12 This year, Holy Cross will be looking to capture its 12th Patriot League Championship. The 11 conference title victories are the most in the history of the Patriot League. The Crusaders have also been to a Patriot League-best 18 championship games, including three straight trips in , and The last Patriot League championship for Holy Cross came during the 2007 season, when it defeated American at the Hart Center. HOME SWEET HOME Now in its 42nd campaign, the Holy Cross women s basketball team has enjoyed great success in home games played at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex, as it is (.717) all-time since the beginning of the program in The Crusaders have posted winning records at the Hart Center in three of their last four seasons. 6 Bill Gibbons Head Coach 33rd Season Clark, 1981 Overall: (.604) Conference Regular Season: (.695) Patriot League Regular Season: (.692) Bill Gibbons is in his 33rd season at the helm of the Holy Cross women s basketball program in , and his 37th season as part of the Holy Cross athletic department. He is the winningest coach in the history of the program, leading the Crusaders to an overall mark of in his first 32 years. On Dec. 3, 2011, Gibbons earned his 500th victory as Holy Cross head coach, becoming the 24th active Division I coach to reach 500 wins. He crossed the 550-win plateau on Feb. 19, Gibbons was the recipient of the prestigious Paul N. Johnson Award, given to a member of the Worcester community who has greatly contributed to Worcester area basketball. With his service, the name Gibbons has become a fixture in the realm of women s basketball. He has led the Crusaders to 12 conference titles, including 11 Patriot League Championships in his career as head coach. He has also made 13 postseason appearances (11 NCAA Tournaments, one WNIT and one WBI) in his 30 years. With seventeen 20-win seasons under his belt, Gibbons has cemented himself and the women s basketball program as one of the best in the East. The sixth coach of the women s program at Holy Cross, Gibbons has enjoyed the longest tenure in the position. He has led the Holy Cross women s basketball program to more victories than any other coach, and is the winningest coach in Holy Cross basketball history. With his 358th victory, he surpassed George Blaney (357 wins as head coach of the Holy Cross men s basketball program), who had hired him to be his assistant coach in Now with more than 550 wins under his belt, Gibbons is the second-winningest coach in Holy Cross Athletics history, behind legendary baseball coach Jack Barry, who totaled 616 wins from In 2007, Gibbons was named the assistant women s basketball coach for Team USA, competing in the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. During the five-day basketball tournament made up of eight international basketball teams, Gibbons team took home the gold medal, winning the championship game on July 24 over Brazil in front of 15,000 fans. In 2006, Gibbons was named as a Russell Athletic / WBCA Victory Club Award recipient. The Russell Athletic / WBCA Victory Club Award is presented to each WBCA member head coach who achieves career wins of 200, 300, 400 and 500. Gibbons made his way onto the prestigious list with a win over Army on January 12, Entering the season, Gibbons ranks in the top-25 on the list of winningest active Division I coaches. SEVENTEEN 20-WIN SEASONS Gibbons has led the Crusaders to more victories than any other coach in Holy Cross history during his 29-year tenure. He has won 20 or more games in 11 of the last 20 seasons and in 17 seasons overall. His win seasons are tied for the 29th most by a Division I coach in NCAA history. For his career, Gibbons has averaged 18.9 wins per year. In his rookie campaign, Gibbons led his squad to an impressive 21-7 overall record and a third place finish in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The Crusaders finished with a overall mark and placed second in the MAAC. In , Holy Cross upped its ledger to 21-8 and took second place conference honors. Gibbons level of success reached new heights with a MAAC Tournament title and an NCAA Tournament appearance in In addition, the Crusaders finished the season overall and 10-2 in the MAAC. SUCCESS IN THE PATRIOT LEAGUE The campaign was a monumental season for Gibbons. Voted Patriot League Coach of the Year by his peers, he led the Crusaders to a 12-0 conference record and to the regular season and postseason league championships. Under his care and guidance, Holy Cross finished 25-6, setting a school record for victories. In addition, the squad earned an at-large invitation to the NCAA Tournament, upsetting Maryland, 81-74, at the Hart Center for the program s first-ever NCAA Tournament victory. Gibbons directed the Crusaders to a 22-7 overall mark and a Patriot League regular season title. His and squads also captured Patriot League championships, giving Holy Cross three titles in a span of four years. Gibbons earned his 200th career win on March 5, 1995, when the Crusaders upended Bucknell, in the semifinals of the Patriot League Tournament. In , Gibbons guided his squad to a 23-4 mark, matching the best winning percentage in school history. With a 12-0 mark in Patriot League play, Holy Cross became just the second team in league history to compile a perfect regular season record. For his efforts, Gibbons was honored as Patriot League Coach of the Year for the second time. The team compiled a 13-1 mark in Patriot League play (24-8 overall), earning its seventh-consecutive Patriot League regular season title. Gibbons was again named as the Patriot League Coach of the Year. After a disappointing mark in , the first sub-.500 season under Gibbons direction, the Crusaders came back to win 20 games in , while capturing both the Patriot League regular season (12-2) and tournament titles, and earning the program s 11th trip to the NCAA Tournament. The team (16-14 overall) compiled a 10-4 record in Patriot League play and won six of its last seven games going into the Patriot League championship game, but fell to Army, in the title contest, denying the program it s 10th postseason appearance in 12 years. The team (15-18 overall) finished third in the Patriot League but won the Patriot League Tournament title after defeating No. 4 seed American in the final. The Crusaders lost to Duke in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. During the season (19-13 overall) the Crusaders finished the season ranked second in the league with a 10-4 record and runner-up in the tournament, after hosting Bucknell in the Championship game. More recently, Gibbons teams have posted winning records in three of the last six seasons, while making four more appearances in the Patriot League championship game (2008, 2012, 2013 and 2014). The 2012 team also advanced to the Women s Basketball Invitational, defeating New Hampshire in the first round for only the second postseason win in the program s history.
