This will be the fourth meeting between Holy Cross and Penn State, with the Lady Lions leading the all-time series, 3-0. Penn State earned a victory over Holy Cross in the first meeting on Feb. 25, 1992 in Worcester. The two teams met in the first round of the 2004 NCAA Tournament, as the Lady Lions picked up a victory in University Park. In the last meeting between these two schools on Nov. 29, 2009, Penn State edged Holy Cross, 52-48, in the championship game of the Maine Classic in Orono, Maine. The Crusaders have played 10 of the 14 teams that are currently in the Big 10 and are 4-15 alltime against them. Holy Cross has a winning record against Michigan (2-1), a.500 record versus Maryland (1-1), and losing records to Illinois (0-1), Indiana (0-1), Nebraska (0-1), Northwestern (0-2), Ohio State (0-2), Penn State (0-3), Rutgers (1-2) and Wisconsin (0-1). The win against Maryland came on March 13, 1991 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The win is the lone NCAA Tournament win by Holy Cross or by any team in the Patriot League. LAST TIME OUT... Holy Cross defeated Division II Assumption College, 63-46, in an exhibition game on Saturday, Nov. 7 at the Hart Center in Worcester. The Crusaders were led by senior guard Lisa Mifsud who totaled 15 points (3-6 3FG) and five assists. Sophomores Tricia Byrne and Katie Doherty each scored nine points apiece, while Byrne dished out a game-high six assists. Junior Madelyn Ganser totaled six points and nine rebounds, while senior Molly Hourigan tallied nine caroms and three blocked shots. Assumption held the lead at the 6:31- mark of the second quarter before the Crusaders erupted on an 8-0 run to head into the half with the lead. The Greyhounds would not get any closer for the remainder of the game. Holy Cross worked its lead to 20 points (56-36) with 4:03 left in the fourth quarter, before the Greyhounds ended the game on a 10-7 run to make the score its final, Holy Cross shot 47.3 percent from the field (26-55) and 45.0 percent from behind the arc (9-20), while it limited Assumption to 16-of-46 from the floor (34.8%) and 5-of-20 from downtown (25.0%). The Crusaders held the statistical advantages in assists (20-8), steals (12-5), points in the paint (24-16) and points off turnovers (21-11). Both teams hauled in 32 rebounds apiece.

The Crusaders finished third last year in the Patriot League with an 11-7 record, while they posted a overall mark. Holy Cross returns 10 letterwinners and four starters to the lineup this season, including Preseason All-Patriot League selection Raquel Scott. Scott, a senior who was named a unanimous first team All-Patriot League selection in , posted 16.7 points and 9.8 rebounds per game last season. Scott enters the season 21st on the Holy Cross all-time scoring list with 1,125 career points and sixth on the all-time rebounds list with 756 caroms. In addition, Holy Cross brings back third team All-Patriot League honoree Lisa Mifsud and Patriot League All-Rookie member Katie Doherty. Mifsud posted 12.4 points per game last season and stood second in the Patriot League in assists per game (3.8). Doherty, the only player to start in all 32 games last season, averaged 6.5 points and 3.2 rebounds per game in During the conference regular season, Doherty averaged 7.1 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. Senior Molly Hourigan led the Patriot League last season with 2.3 blocks per game, which also stood 39th in the nation. Sophomore Infiniti Thomas-Waheed started 11 of the final 12 games last season and averaged 5.5 points and 3.2 boards per game. During the Patriot League slate, Thomas-Waheed averaged 6.6 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. The Crusaders welcome two freshmen to the team in Maggie Locke and Miranda Nixon. SCOUTING REPORT ON PENN STATE The Lady Lions will also open their season when they host Holy Cross on Friday. Penn State posted a 6-24 overall record last year and tied for 13th in the Big 10 with a 3-15 conference mark. The Lady Lions return six letterwinners to the squad, including leading scorer Lindsey Spann who averaged 13.2 points per game a season ago. Penn State also returns its leading rebounder in Kaliyah Mitchell (7.0 rpg) and its leader in assists in Sierra Moore (3.9 apg). The Lady Lions brings back 91 percent of their scoring, 90 percent of their assists and steals, 88 percent of their minutes played and 86 percent of their rebounds from a season ago Penn State is piloted by head coach Coquese Washington, who enters her ninth season at the helm. Through her first eight seasons, she holds a record of (.585) including four 20-win seasons and three Big Ten regular season titles ( , , ). Washington s recruiting class was ranked 15th nationally by ESPN.com/Hoopgurlz. Penn State defeated California (Pa.), 84-57, in an exhibition contest on Nov. 1. UP NEXT... 3 CRUSADERS TABBED SECOND BEST IN THE PATRIOT LEAGUE The Holy Cross women s basketball team was picked to finish second in the Patriot League Preseason Poll, as voted on by the conference s head coaches and media relations directors. Army West Point was picked to finish first in the poll with 155 points and 13 first-place votes, as two-time Patriot League Player of the Year Kelsey Minato was voted as the Preseason Player of the Year. The Crusaders totaled 130 points and a pair of first-place votes, while Lehigh came in third with 127 points and three first-place votes. Bucknell finished fourth with 119 points and one first-place vote, while defending Patriot League champion American came in fifth with 111 points and one first-place vote. Rounding out the poll were Navy (sixth, 83 points), Colgate (seventh, 55 points), Loyola Maryland (eighth, 47 points), Lafayette (ninth, 43 points) and Boston University (tenth, 30 points). GREAT SCOTT!!! Holy Cross will be led this season by senior forward Raquel Scott, who was named to the preseason All-Patriot League team. Scott averaged nearly a double-double last year with 16.7 points and 9.8 rebounds per game, which ranked third and second in the Patriot League, respectively. She also shot 45.4 percent from the field ( ) and 35.4 percent from behind the arc (17-48), while she drained 94-of-131 from the charity stripe (71.8%). Last season, she stood 24th in the nation in defensive rebounds per game (7.0), 38th in double-doubles (13), 43rd in rebounding and 90th in scoring. MIFSUD TO LEAD HOLY CROSS BACKCOURT Senior and second-year starting point guard Lisa Mifsud will look to pilot the Holy Cross offense this season after being named third team All-Patriot League last year. During her junior campaign, she averaged 12.4 points, 3.8 assists and 3.0 rebounds per game, while hitting 33.1 percent of her shots ( ) and a team-high 55 three-pointers. Mifsud ranked second in the Patriot League last year in assists, third in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.24-to-1), fifth in three pointers per game (1.7) and eighth in scoring. Over her four year career, she has compiled 767 points, 243 assists, 181 rebounds and 74 steals. HOURIGAN HOSTS BLOCK PARTY Crusader senior Molly Hourigan has been a defensive menace in the paint throughout her career as the 6-4 center led the Patriot League last season with 68 total blocked shots. As a junior, Hourigan averaged 4.6 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game. Her blocks per game average last season ranked 39th in the nation. Hourigan enters the season fourth on the Holy Cross all-time blocks list with 176 in her career. Her 68 blocks last season were the seventh-most by a Crusader in a single season, while she totaled the fourth-most blocks (77) during her sophomore campaign. Over her career, she has recorded 443 points and 435 rebounds, while shooting 51.2 percent from the floor ( ). Postgame Procedures Holy Cross head coach Bill Gibbons and players will be available following a brief cooling off period. For home games, press conferences will be held in the Bud Ryan Room room located on the second floor of the Hart Center. Charter TV3 The Holy Cross Coaches Show The Holy Cross Coaches Show will air every other week during the season, beginning on Oct. 6. Featuring Holy Cross head coaches and student-athletes, the show will air live on WEEI 1440 AM from the Compass Tavern in Worcester beginning at 7:00 p.m. Dick Lutsk will serve as the show s host. DOHERTY COMING OFF ALL-ROOKIE CAMPAIGN Sophomore guard Katie Doherty will once again play a key role this season in the Holy Cross backcourt. Named to the Patriot League All-Rookie team in , she posted 6.5 points, 3.2 assists and 2.3 assists per game, while hitting 36.1 percent of her field goals and 33.0 percent of her three-pointers. During the Patriot League regular season last year, Doherty stepped up her offensive game and produced 7.1 points per contest to rank fourth on the team. She was the only player on last year s roster to start in all 32 games. Doherty recorded 208 points, 102 rebounds, 72 assists and 28 steals during her freshman campaign. GILLESPIE FROM DOWNTOWN Senior guard Kate Gillespie will look to build upon her breakout junior campaign this season. Last year, she posted career-highs in every statistical category and averaged 6.6 points. 1.7 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game. Gillespie led Holy Cross last season in threepoint percentage at a 35.9 percent clip from downtown (46-128). She also connected on 71-of-197 from the floor (36.0%). As a Crusader, she has registered 274 points, 73 rebounds and 70 assists, while she has drained 35.3 percent of her shots from long range (60-170). SOPHOMORE GUARDS ADD DEPTH In addition to Doherty, Mifsud and Gillespie, the Crusaders have three sophomore guards that all saw playing time last season. Infiniti Thomas-Waheed played in 30 games and started in 11 of the final 12 contests for the Crusaders. She averaged 5.5 points, 3.2 rebounds and 0.9 steals per game in Tricia Byrne played in all 32 games last season with three starts. She totaled 64 points, 56 rebounds 36 assists and 33 steals as a freshman. Shannon Druck appeared in 10 games for Holy Cross last year and recorded six points, four rebounds and three assists. HOLY CROSS FRONTCOURT DEPTH The Crusader frontcourt will have added depth from junior Madelyn Ganser, sophomore Amy Hasenauer, and freshmen Maggie Locke and Miranda Nixon. Ganser played in 17 games a season ago and totaled 12 points and 12 rebounds. Hasenauer appeared in 22 contests as a freshman and recorded 16 points, 30 rebounds and 10 blocked shots. #31 Raquel Scott Preseason All-Patriot League Team (10/21) Holy Cross Notables Locke comes to Holy Cross from Collegeville, Pa., where she played basketball at Spring-Ford High School. She totaled 473 points and 354 rebounds in her career and helped guide Spring- Ford to three consecutive conference championships. Nixon comes to Holy Cross from Harrisburg, Pa. and Trinity High School, where she averaged 10.1 points per game during her senior season. She set school single-game records in rebounds (20) and blocks (10) and led her team to the State Tournament all four years. CRUSADERS RECEIVE VOTES IN COLLEGEINSIDER.COM MID-MAJOR POLL The Holy Cross women s basketball team garnered seven points in the CollegeInsider.com Women s Mid-Major Poll, as released on Nov. 4. Several of Holy Cross opponents are either ranked or are receiving votes in the poll. Quinnipiac is ranked 11th in the poll, while American has the most points of teams outside the Top-25. Army (60 points) and Bryant (2 points) are also receiving votes in the poll. During the season, Holy Cross was ranked 19th for two straight weeks - its highest ranking in the six-year history of the poll. CRUSADERS CHASING RECORDS Several Crusaders find themselves in or closing in on the Top-10 in the Holy Cross career record book. Raquel Scott ranks fourth in all-time double-doubles with 32 and sixth in total rebounds with 756. She is three double-doubles from third place and six rebounds from fifth place. Molly Hourigan currently stands fourth on the all-time blocks list with 176 in her career. She is 18 shy of third place in Holy Cross history. CRUSADERS AIM FOR BANNER 12 This year, Holy Cross will be looking to capture its 12th Patriot League Championship. The 11 conference title victories are the most in the history of the Patriot League. KARA POWELL NAMED ASSISTANT COACH Holy Cross women s basketball announced the hiring of Kara Powell as an assistant coach on Sept. 1. Her primary responsibilities include player development of the guards, as well as scouting and recruiting. Powell comes to Holy Cross from the College of William & Mary, where she was the director of basketball operations for the past two seasons. Prior to William & Mary, Powell was the assistant women s basketball coach at Sacred Heart for the season. She also worked with the New York Knicks as a basketball operations intern in the summer of A 2011 graduate of Richmond with a bachelor s degree in rhetoric and communications studies, Powell was a four-year member of the of the women s basketball team. She appeared in 123 career games with the Spiders and compiled 695 points, 307 assists and 294 rebounds. Powell s father, Jimmy Powell, is the advance scout for the Indiana Pacers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Crusaders finished the month of November with a 3-4 record while Penn State moved to 5-1 on the season. Senior guard Bethany O Dell tallied a season-high and team-high 19 points on 5-of-15 shooting. The Crusaders held a four-point advantage, 6-2, for over four minutes in the first half before Penn State was able to tie the game for the first time, 6-6, at 12:18. The Lady Lions then jumped ahead, 14-10, for their largest lead of the half at 6:13. O Dell hit her second three-point shot of the game at 4:41 to reclaim the lead for Holy Cross, who held on for a advantage heading into the half. As a team, Holy Cross shot 32 percent from the field (8-of-25) while Penn State shot 37 percent (10-of-27). Penn State tied the game at 25 with a little over two minutes played in the second half. A 7-0 run gave the Crusaders a fivepoint advantage with 12 minutes to go, capitalized by a jump shot by junior Whitney Fremeau. The Lady Lions climbed within one point two minutes later and then retook a advantage at 8:06 after a crucial three-point shot was made. The teams continued to battle back and forth until the Lady Lions made a late six-point run to close out the game, earning the victory for the Dead River Classic championship title. Penn State outscored Holy Cross in the second half and finished the game with a 40.4 percent field goal outing. The Crusaders went 15-of-49 in the game and turned the ball over a season-low 14 times. Holy Cross had two players finish in double-digits, with O Dell leading the way with 19 points and a teamhigh four assists. Fremeau tallied her fourth double-digit scoring performance of the season, nabbing 14 points and tying for a team-high five rebounds. Freshman Amy Lepley brought down a career-high five rebounds to tie the team-high as well. The Lady Lions were led by senior Tyra Grant, who was held to a season-low 13 points. He is the winningest coach in the history of the program, with a career record of Entering the season, Gibbons 568 career victories rank 20th among active Division I coaches and 39th all-time in NCAA history. On Dec. 3, 2011, Gibbons earned his 500th victory as Holy Cross head coach, becoming the 24th active Division I coach to reach 500 wins. He crossed the 550-win plateau on Feb. 19, He has led the Crusaders to 11 Patriot League Championships in his career as head coach. He has also made 13 postseason appearances (11 NCAA Tournaments, one WNIT and one WBI) in his 29 years. With seventeen 20-win seasons under his belt, Gibbons has cemented himself and the women s basketball program as one of the best in the East. The sixth coach of the women s program at Holy Cross, Gibbons has enjoyed the longest tenure in the position. He has led the Holy Cross women s basketball program to more victories than any other coach, and is the winningest coach in Holy Cross basketball history. His and squads also captured Patriot League championships, giving Holy Cross three titles in a span of four years. Gibbons earned his 200th career win on March 5, 1995, when the Crusaders upended Bucknell, in the semifinals of the Patriot League Tournament. In , Gibbons guided his squad to a 23-4 mark, matching the best winning percentage in school history. With a 12-0 mark in Patriot League play, Holy Cross became just the second team in league history to compile a perfect regular season record. For his efforts, Gibbons was honored as Patriot League Coach of the Year for the second time. The team compiled a 13-1 mark in Patriot League play (24-8 overall), earning its seventh-consecutive Patriot League regular season title. Gibbons was again named as the Patriot League Coach of the Year. After a disappointing mark in , the first sub-.500 season under Gibbons direction, the Crusaders came back to win 20 games in , while capturing both the Patriot League regular season (12-2) and tournament titles, and earning the program s 11th trip to the NCAA Tournament. The team (16-14 overall) compiled a 10-4 record in Patriot League play and won six of its last seven games going into the Patriot League championship game, but fell to Army, in the title contest, denying the program it s 10th postseason appearance in 12 years. The team (15-18 overall) finished third in the Patriot League but won the Patriot League Tournament title after defeating No. 4 seed American in the final. The Crusaders lost to Duke in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. During the season (19-13 overall) the Crusaders finished the season ranked second in the league with a 10-4 record and runner-up in the tournament, after hosting Bucknell in the Championship game. More recently, Gibbons teams have posted winning records in four of the last seven seasons, while making four more appearances in the Patriot League championship game (2008, 2012, 2013 and 2014). The 2012 team also advanced to the Women s Basketball Invitational, defeating New Hampshire in the first round for only the second postseason win in the program s history.
