7 Season Preview After falling in the Patriot League Tournament Championship game for the third straight season, the Holy Cross women s basketball team aims to repeat its appearance in the title game, but this time earn its League-best 12th championship. The Crusaders (20-12, 10-8) are coming off their first 20-win season since , but a disappointing conference mark forced Holy Cross to play all three tournament games on the road last season. This year, the Crusaders return eight letterwinners and three starters, while they welcome in five freshmen. I think we have a good mix of returning veterans and hungry youth, said head coach Bill Gibbons, who enters his 30th season at the helm of the Crusaders. I am very optimistic about this group, because I think we have the pieces to compete again for a league championship. Holy Cross looks to be the offensive leader in the Patriot League again this season, after leading the conference in points per game each of the last three years. In addition to its 70.5 points per game last season, the Crusaders also led the league in field-goal percentage (43.3) and assists per game (18.2). Holy Cross graduated four seniors from last year s squad, including threetime first team All-Patriot League guard Alex Smith. The Crusaders, who were tabbed third in the Preseason Poll, will look to continue their recent success and remain one of the top teams in the Patriot League. FRONTCOURT The Holy Cross frontcourt looks to be the main strength of this year s team. Junior second team All-Patriot Leaguer Raquel Scott, who led the conference with 9.8 rebounds per game last season, returns as the leader of the frontcourt. Scott ranked second in the Patriot League last year with 16.3 points per game and led the league with 18 double-doubles. In addition, senior captain Emily Parker and junior Molly Hourigan return as the primary centers on the squad. Parker tallied 10.6 points and 6.0 rebounds per game last season, while Hourigan averaged 6.2 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per contest in I think the experience and depth of our frontcourt will be one of our strengths this season, said Gibbons. I think Raquel has established herself as one of the best frontcourt players in the league and can build upon her sophomore season. Emily is as good as any center in the league and Molly has become a defensive presence in the lane and has shown a lot of improvement offensively. Senior captain Clare Sullivan will add depth and experience to the frontcourt having played in 68 games over the course of her career. Sophomores Madelyn Ganser and Jenn Dynis will see a lot of action this season between forward and guard, as both appeared in over 20 games during their freshman campaign. Freshman Amy Hasenauer, from Greece, N.Y., will provide minutes at both the four and five position for the Crusaders this season and round out the core of six frontcourt players. BACKCOURT The Holy Cross backcourt will be led by junior Lisa Mifsud who had a breakout sophomore campaign. Mifsud, now the team s point guard, started in 29 games in and averaged 10.1 points and 3.2 assists. In addition, junior Kate Gillespie returns after playing in 31 games last year. Mifsud and Gillespie are the two leading three-point shooting returnees from last year s team. The Crusaders welcome four freshmen guards to the team in , all of whom will be competing for minutes this season. They are Tricia Byrne of Dunmore, Pa., Katie Doherty of Holbrook, N.Y., Shannon Druck, of New Freedom, Pa. and Infiniti Thomas-Waheed of Newton, Mass. We have a great group of backcourt kids, said Gibbons. Lisa will move over to the point after the graduation of Alex, and Kate is really stepping into her role in the two-guard position and has shown a lot of improvement. Our four freshmen guards give us a very deep bench and will look to contribute right away. SCHEDULE Holy Cross will play a competitive 13 game non-conference slate this season beginning on Sunday, Nov. 16 at home versus Manhattan. The Crusaders will then leave the Hart Center for seven straight games highlighted by the Hall of Fame Women s Challenge. As part of the tournament, Holy Cross will face off against on last year s NCAA Tournament runner-up Notre Dame, as well as Harvard, Quinnipiac and Georgetown. Other non-conference games include a pair of home games versus rival Boston College and UMass Lowell, as well as the Seawolves Holiday Classic in Stony Brook, N.Y. with matchups against Norfolk State and Western Michigan. I really love our schedule and I think we have some real challenging non-conference games, said Gibbons. Those games will help us get ready for the Patriot League, which I believe is the most underrated women s basketball conference in the country, and is getting better and better every year. In Patriot League play, Holy Cross will have a home-and-home series against each of the nine other teams in the conference. The league schedule will be highlighted by contests against 2014 Patriot League Tournament champion Army and the 2014 Patriot League regular season champion Navy. 25 Coaching Staff the nation s best. In recent years, Gibbons squads have been tested by Connecticut, Louisiana Tech, Rutgers, Duke, DePaul, Arizona, Auburn, Florida, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Penn State, Stanford, Vanderbilt, Tulane, Virginia and Wisconsin. He has included top 25 teams in the Crusaders competitive schedule each year and has subsequently built the program s reputation nationally. Attracting outstanding student-athletes throughout the country, Gibbons and his staff have vastly improved the college s recruiting efforts during his tenure. As the women s collegiate game has changed throughout the country in recent years, so has women s hoops on Mount St. James. Now one of the premiere teams on campus, the Crusader women s basketball team has drawn record crowds at the Hart Center, including the 4,000 fans who attended the contest against the Connecticut Huskies in January 2000, the first sellout at the Hart Center for women s basketball. SUCCESS IN THE CLASSROOM While some aspects of the game have changed, others have remained the same at Holy Cross. An integral part of Gibbons collegiate coaching philosophy is the success of each student-athlete in the classroom. Impressively, each student-athlete who has played for four seasons under Gibbons direction has earned her degree. For the last five years, Holy Cross was one of just three schools in the 64- team NCAA Tournament field with a graduation rate of 100 percent. The Crusader program has produced four Academic All-Americans and more than 10 Academic All-District picks. During Gibbons tenure, three players have earned Patriot League Female Scholar Athlete of the Year honors (Kathy Courtney, Ann Lambiotte and Amy O Brien), and five players have earned Patriot League women s basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors (Lisa Andrews, Courtney, Brittany Keil, Lambiotte and O Brien, twice). For his efforts, Gibbons was honored as Patriot League Coach of the Year for the second time. The team compiled a 13-1 mark in Patriot League play (24-8 overall), earning its seventh-consecutive Patriot League regular season title. Gibbons was again named as the Patriot League Coach of the Year. After a disappointing mark in , the first sub-.500 season under Gibbons direction, the Crusaders came back to win 20 games in , while capturing both the Patriot League regular season (12-2) and tournament titles, and earning the program s 11th trip to the NCAA Tournament. The team (16-14 overall) compiled a 10-4 record in Patriot League play and won six of its last seven games going into the Patriot League championship game, but fell to Army, in the title contest, denying the program it s 10th postseason appearance in 12 years. The team (15-18 overall) finished third in the Patriot League but won the Patriot League Tournament title after defeating No. 4 seed American in the final. The Crusaders lost to Duke in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
