After winning 18 straight games, top seeded Army West Point added another one with a victory over third seeded Loyola University Maryland in the Patriot League Women s Basketball Championship on Saturday, March 12 at Christl Arena. The Black Knights improved to 29-2 overall with their 19th consecutive victory, capturing their third Patriot League title and second in the past three years. After reaching the Patriot League Women s Basketball Tournament Championship for the first time since joining the League, the Greyhounds season came to an end with a record. Army jumped out to a 20-9 lead after the first quarter, but, just like yesterday against Bucknell in the second quarter, Loyola found its stride and held the Black Knights scoreless for the first four minutes of the period. The Greyhounds stormed ahead with a 12-0 run to take a lead. Finally breaking the scoring drought, senior Amiee Oertner laid one in to give the home team the lead back and also began a run of 10 straight points. Loyola senior Jeneh Perry converted two free throws to put the Greyhounds within seven, but sophomore Destinee Morris drained a long three with 19 seconds on the clock to send Army into the break with a lead. Early into the third quarter, Loyola cut the deficit to eight points, but it was the closest the Greyhounds would be the rest of the way, as Army extended its lead by as many as 20 points before capturing the win. Army senior Kelsey Minato, who was named Patriot League Tournament MVP for the second time in three seasons, led the Black Knights with 25 points in the victory. Oertner joined Minato on the All-Tournament team and finished with a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds. She also added two assists and four blocks. The 30 point margin of victory was a new Patriot League Tournament record in a semifinal contest. Lehigh sophomore Quinci Mann opened the contest with back-to-back three pointers to give the Mountain Hawks a 6-4 early lead. After the two teams traded points and were tied at 10-10, Army went on a 6-2 run for a four-point cushion. Lehigh came within one after senior Kerry Kinek hit a three-pointer, but Army senior Kelsey Minato responded with one of her own. It was the closest the Mountain Hawks would be the rest of the way. Army put the game out of reach with seven-straight treys in third quarter to outscore Lehigh Minato finished with 21 points, 12 of which came from the four treys in the third quarter. She also grabbed six rebounds and three steals. Senior Aimee Oertner had another impressive outing, scoring all 18 of her points in the first half. She also contributed five rebounds, five assists and two blocks. Sophomore Janae McNeal also reached double digit points with 10, while adding five rebounds, four assists, and two steals. #1 Loyola Maryland 65, #2 Bucknell 53 (March 11) The third-seeded Greyhounds combined to outscore the second seeded Bison in the second and third quarters, which proved to be the difference and advanced them to the Patriot League Tournament Championship for the first time in program history after a victory. It was a slow first quarter that featured eight lead changes and two tied scores, with Bucknell holding the 10-9 edge. Taking back the lead after five consecutive points, Loyola Maryland rattled off three baskets from downtown for a lead. With four seconds remaining in the half, senior Colleen Marshall hit a long three, boosting the team s lead to 10 points, Bucknell cut the deficit down to eight halfway through the third period but an 11-0 run by the Greyhounds pushed their lead to With desperation settling in and two minutes to go, the Bison came within 11 after a Kate Walker three-pointer, but the difference was too great. Loyola earned the 12-point victory, scoring 13 of their 20 fourth-quarter points from the line. Marshall led Loyola with 22 points and dished out four assists, and graduate student Steph Smith finished with career-high 20 points, while also hauling in seven rebounds. Sophomore Bri Betz-White also reached double digits in scoring with 10. Patriot League Tournament Quarterfinal Recap For just the third time in Patriot League history, each of the top four seeded teams advanced to the tournament semifinals. The last time it occurred was in the season, while the first time it happened was during the season -- just the second year of existence. #4 Lehigh opened the game with a bang over Holy Cross, as senior Amina Affini hit a three-pointer to open the scoring just 17 seconds into the contest. The Mountain Hawks added five more points from a Taylor Campbell layup and a Lexi Martins three-pointer to set the tone early with an 8-0 lead less than three minutes into the game. The Crusaders were unable to catch up after dropping down to a score at the half, and Lehigh cruised to a victory to advance. After shooting percent in the first half, #1Army West Point kept up the pace to finish the game making.500 of its -shots from the field. Colgate opened the game with a 4-2 lead, but three straight triples from a trio of seniors -- Kelsey Minato, Jean Parker, and Brianna Johnson -- helped swing momentum in favor of the home team. Senior Aimee Oertner was outstanding for the Black Knights, coming up just one block shy of a triple double. She finished the game with 18 points, 13 rebounds, and nine blocks. Sophomore Taylor Dunham drained a three to tie the game for #6 Navy at #3 Loyola Maryland with eight seconds remaining in the contest, but what looked like overtime was erased with a Colleen Marshall jumper -- with one second remaining in regulation -- to seal the home victory for the Greyhounds, #7 American jumped out to a 13-point lead over #2 Bucknell. A clutch three-point basket with two seconds remaining in the second quarter from Bison freshman Kyi English -- who finished the contest with a career high 20 points -- helped put the home team back on track and in the game, erasing the deficit to just two, Bucknell used its momentum in the second half of the contest and outscored American to move on in the tournament with a win. Patriot League Tournament First Round Recap #7 American and #8 Colgate captured wins in the first round of the Patriot League Women s Basketball Tournament on Saturday to advance to the quarterfinals on Monday. The Eagles defeated Boston University 61-53, while the Raiders defeated Lafayette for the third time this season, Senior Ari Booth had an outstanding night, tallying a career-high 23 points to lead American, while sophomore Maria Liddane also had a career game, netting a personal-best 19 points and seven rebounds. Early foul trouble forced Colgate senior Josie Stockill to sit for a majority of the second quarter but didn t let it stop her in the latter half, as she helped the Raiders outscore the Leopards 22-8 in the third quarter and take the lead for good. She finished with a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds, while adding four blocks. Over the three meetings with the Leopards this season, the senior totaled 64 points, 34 rebounds, and 20 blocks posting double-doubles in all three contests.
