Dolfo, who has a career record of in 13 seasons as the Vikings head coach and ranks in the top 20 among NCAA Division II active coaches in winning percentage (.726), cited family considerations as the reason for the leave. 13 PREVIEW INTERIM COACH NICHOLS LOOKS TO CONTINUE WINNING TRADITION There s always been a sense of continuity to the women s basketball team. The Vikings have rarely had to rebuild, always seeming to have a new core of experienced players ready when another group departs. It is a formula that has worked for 31 winning records in 32 seasons, and 12 national tournament appearances, including trips in each of the last six years. And it doesn t just apply to the players, it works for the coaches, too. Sara Nichols becomes the third head coach of a program that begins its 33rd year, stepping in on an interim basis for Carmen Dolfo, who is taking a one-year sabbatical from coaching. Nichols understands the Viking way as well as anyone. A four-year letter winner as a player, she ranks third in school history in career assists (448), and was one of the captains on a team that reached the NCAA Division II national semifinals in Since then, she s been Western s top assistant coach. It is a path not unlike the one Dolfo followed to becoming head coach in I have a pride in the program that comes from being a part of it at every level, said Nichols. There s an appreciation for the people who started the tradition and who have kept it going. And there s a passion that comes from being part of something bigger than yourself. Western was 22-6 last year, reaching the opening round of the West Regional of the NCAA II National Tournament, and finishing second in the 10-team Great Northwest Athletic Conference at Six players return from that team, including two of the top five scorers. The Vikings are led by two seniors who have been regular contributors from the day they stepped on the floor as freshmen. Forward Tessa DeBoer and center Jenn McGillivray each bring a bruising inside presence. Their games are different in other respects, but they are well-prepared to share the mantle of leadership. That s developed over four years, Nichols said of the leadership provided by the two seniors. They ve been to three national tournaments, they ve had three different results. They ve seen what it takes to get there and to go beyond, and they ll be able to draw on that. DeBoer averaged 9.5 points and a team-high 7.5 rebounds, finishing seventh in the GNAC in the latter category. She has a knack for the quiet contributions, often shutting down the opposition s top scorer. Tessa is so dedicated and so focused, Nichols said. She never misses a workout, never cuts corners, and that gives her consistency. She s passionate about what she does, and she s an incredible role model, not just in basketball, but in all of life. McGillivray did not make a start last season, but averaged double figures for the third consecutive year, contributing 12.2 points a game and earning honorable mention all-gnac status. She enters the season with 1,053 career points, the 16th-best mark in school history, and needs just 111 points to move into the Top 10. She shot 57.6 percent (114-of-198) from the field, ranking second in the GNAC, and made 72.1 percent of 140 free throws, her 5.2 attempts per game being the third most in the conference WWU Vikings - Front Row (L-R): Jenn McGillivray, Angie Clift, Devin Dykstra, Samantha Hubbard, Arielle White, Jodi Gerald. Back Row: Kelly Colard, Piper Nims, Krystal Robinson, Stephanie Dressel, Tina Donahue, Tessa DeBoer. 13

14 Jen is motivated, she s planning to go out with a bang, said Nichols. Jen is so strong - when she gets both hands on the ball, it s hers, you can t take it away. At times, she s able to do whatever she wants on the court. Four other players who saw action a year ago also return. Back in the paint are two sophomores, forward Tina Donahue and center Stephanie Dressel. Donahue contributed 4.4 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.1 steals, and has a blend of height and skills that allow her to play either in the post or on the perimeter. Tina is an incredible athlete, said Nichols. She s just waiting for a breakout night, because when that happens it will give her the confidence to do anything. She s a great team player - she could get 28 or 30 points one night and 10 assists the next. Dressel provided defensive depth in the post last year, averaging 2.3 points and 1.8 rebounds in 24 games. Nichols says Dressel could be one of the most improved players on the team. Steph really worked hard in the off-season and by the end of the spring, it was incredible how much she improved, Nichols said. I m really impressed with the jump she made. Also back at forward is junior Jodi Gerald, who averaged 3.1 points and 2.0 rebounds, including a 13-point effort in a road victory at Humboldt State where her shooting broke open a close game. I think we ll see a lot more of that, said Nichols. She understands our system and all the elements are coming together for her. Jodi has an incredible spirit - she works as hard as anyone on our team. The fourth returnee is sophomore Samantha Hubbard, who saw regular action as the backup point guard last season, averaging 2.5 points and 1.6 assists. She hit a buzzer-beating shot against Cal Poly Pomona, sending the contest to overtime, where the Vikings won, I don t think I ve ever met a more passionate player in my life, Nichols said of Hubbard. What s so inspirational about her is that she doesn t care who scores or what happens as long as we win, and she s never scared to take on a challenge. The other player who was in the program in is guard Kelly Colard, who redshirted last year after transferring from Whatcom CC. Colard, who can also play small forward, was twice a first-team all-north Region pick for the Orcas, averaging 12.0 points, 6.0 assists and 5.0 rebounds as a sophomore. Kelly is an incredible shooter and passer, and she s worked hard on attacking the hoop, said Nichols. Sitting out last year has lit the fire of wanting to get back on the floor for her. The returnees are joined by five newcomers. Three are freshmen, led by forward Krystal Robinson and guard Devin Dykstra. Robinson, who played in the state all-star game last summer, averaged 17.0 points, 9.4 rebounds and 4.6 blocks as a senior, setting Kentridge High School records in the last two categories and career marks in all three. She has an amazingly quick first step, and her arm span is incredible, which helps her as a shot blocker, Nichols said of Robinson. I m really excited to work with her - she brings a great dimension to our program. Dykstra was a first-team Class 2A all-state pick as a senior, averaging 15.1 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 3.2 steals. She started four years as a prep, playing for teams that reached the state tournament each season. I can t believe how feisty Devin is, Nichols said, noting Dykstra plays with a style similar to former Viking guard Julie Walker. She s dedicated and she ll get the job done, it doesn t matter what gets in the way. The other freshman is guard Angie Clift, who is expected to redshirt. Also new to the Vikings are two transfers. Junior forward Piper Nims played the last two years at Whatcom CC after redshirting at Western in She averaged 10.2 points and 7.7 rebounds to earn first-team all-region honors for the Orcas last year. Sophomore forward Arielle White played in all 27 games at Saint Martin s last year. She will redshirt this year to meet GNAC transfer regulations. Samantha Hubbard 14

25 RS ARIELLE WHITE Forward, 5-11, 19, 3/7/84, Sophomore Kent, WA 3-POINT LINE TO MOVE BACK IN The 3-point line is likely to be moved back nine inches for the season, with the new distance being 20 feet, 6 inches, as measured from the front of the rim. The move has been approved by management councils of NCAA Division I and II, but is not a complete certainty as it was rejected by the NCAA III management council in late October Because of the disagreement, the matter will be decided by the NCAA executive committee, which could approve the change for only the divisions which approved it, approve the change for all divisions, or reject the changes and leave the line where it is. Supporters of moving the line back have argued the change would discourage marginal shooters taking 3-pointers. That would make the shot more meaningful, said South Carolina men s coach Dave Odom, a member of NCAA Basketball Rules Committee, earlier this year. COLLEGE: Transfer from Saint Martin s College... Played in all 27 games last year for Saints, averaging 2.1 points and 2.3 rebounds. Also earned one letter in track at Lakes, competing in high jump on Class 3A state championship team, two in tennis (both at Lakes) and one in powerlifting (at Spanaway Lake). PERSONAL: Major is physical therapy... Left-handed. The moving back of the 3-point line is one of two changes initially slated to take place this season which were put on hold. The NCAA Men s and Women s Basketball Rules Committees voted last spring to move the arc and the men s committee also voted to change the shape of the 3-second arc to a trapezoid which would be more than seven feet wider at the baseline than at the foul line, as is currently used in international play. The changes were pushed back to , and in early October, the men s championships committee abandoned the change in the 3-second area. Feedback from the divisional governing committees showed that passing the recommendations without a season s notice for schools to prepare their facilities posed a hardship to some member schools, said men s committee chair Art Hyland, who is the Big East Conference s coordinator of officials for men s basketball. Although we preferred to have these rules take effect next season, this adjustment allows the rules to be passed while respecting the needs of some to have time to comply. The 3-point line was introduced at its current 19 feet, 9 inches for the men s game in , and adopted for the women s game the following season. 25

26 FEATURE SENIORS BRING FIRE, TRADITION TO WESTERN S TEAM DeBoer, McGillivray have come long way with Vikings Three years ago, two freshman women s basketball players began their careers at Western. Both were highly touted high school stars. Both played the same position. And both were scared to death. I would come to practice scared every day, said Jenn McGillivray. I was scared every day before practice, said Tessa DeBoer. Now, three years later, those two scared freshmen have turned into two confident seniors. And those two confident seniors are hoping to add to the Vikings unprecedented string of six consecutive national tournament appearances. Jenn and Tessa are key components in our success, said interim coach Sara Nichols, who takes over while head coach Carmen Dolfo takes a one-year leave of absence. They are our only two seniors, and their leadership will be important. When DeBoer and McGillivray joined the Western program, being leaders was the furthest thing on their minds. Much more important was just surviving. McGillivray led the team in scoring (13.1 average) and rebounding (5.6 per game) her sophomore season as she started every game except one that she missed because of an injury. DeBoer started in 25 games, missing three with an injury, and averaged 9.3 points on 55.2 percent field goal shooting and 5.0 rebounds. The two 5-foot-11 forwards presented different styles to opposing teams and both found their niches in the Vikings system. McGillivray was the scoring machine who despite her size wasn t afraid to mix it up underneath the hoop. Jenn is a big presence on the floor, said DeBoer. She has an incredible ability to score. There are some shots only Jenn can make. DeBoer even remembered one particular play their sophomore season, when McGillivray had her back to the basket and was blanketed by a defender. She didn t even look at the basket and it still went in, marveled DeBoer. DeBoer is no slouch herself. A slashing wing player, she can drive, shoot the jumper or pass underneath. And her intensity on defense makes her dangerous at both ends of the court. The expectation of Western s championship program, coach Dolfo s verbal pushing to be the best they could be, the jump in physical conditioning and physical play from high school to college all took their toll, even on the outstanding prep players. But Nichols said even through those difficult days, she could see that McGillivray and DeBoer were special. And as it turned it, the coach was right. They are the only two from that five-player freshman class that are still playing for Western. I remember their drive, even as freshmen, said Nichols. Our team - from freshmen to seniors - we do what it takes to win, and they fit that. And even though the two players remember their freshmen frustrations, their on-the-court performances made them vital parts of the Vikings success right away. DeBoer played in all 29 games as a freshman, averaging 6.1 points and 3.0 rebounds, and shooting 52.2 percent from the field. I didn t realize how much commitment and hard work you had to have to play in college, said DeBoer, an all-stater at Lynden Christian High School. But looking back, I probably learned more in basketball (about life) than in any other class. McGillivray fared even better on the court. Playing in every game and starting in eight, she averaged 12.3 points on 54.6 percent field goal shooting and 5.2 rebounds, all team-leading figures. There were so many times when I wanted to quit, said McGillivray, who came to Western after an all-star career at South Salem (Ore.) High School. I was really successful on the court, but I still felt I was a stupid, little freshman. But Carmen was honest with me. She said, The team needs you. It turned out that the team needed both of them all three years. Tessa DeBoer 26

27 DeBoer McGillivray As a player, she has developed her game so much that she is a threat wherever she is on the court, said McGillivray of DeBoer. And she is very much a team player, a leader. The two, who consider themselves good friends during the season but hang out with different groups away from basketball, have just as different personalities as they do playing styles. McGillivray is the outgoing one, who wears her emotions on her jersey She is a very caring individual, who is willing to make sacrifices for her teammates, said DeBoer. DeBoer is the quieter, more disciplined one. She is the most disciplined person I ve every met, said McGillivray. She is organized, a very good student and a student of the game. I wish I was more like that. But one thing they both have is the fire that Western basketball requires. They are two of the most competitive women I ve met, said Nichols. They are two different people, but they both have that competitive nature and passion for the game. Their competitiveness and willingness to do what it takes to win were put to the test their junior year, when Dolfo chose DeBoer to start at forward and had McGillivray, the team s leading scorer her first two seasons, come off the bench. Despite dealing with the disappointment of not starting, McGillivray had another outstanding season, averaging 12.2 points on 57.6 field goal shooting, with 5.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists. And DeBoer added 9.5 points and a team-high 7.5 rebounds per game. We had an agreement that whoever got it (the starting position) the other would support them, said McGillivray. It was really hard (to not start), but I ve learned a lot about my own character. And this year I m hoping we both start. Now the veterans among the talented Vikings, McGillivray and DeBoer have changed their goal from being survivors to being champions. Our No.1 goal is to win the national championship, said DeBoer, who is used to winning titles being part of two state championships at Lynden Christian. We ve put a lot of time in to be better. We are all really focused and dedicated. Jenn McGillivray McGillivray, who comes into the season ranked 16th among school career scoring leaders with 1,053 points, agreed. It will be hard because this is a tough league. For us to do well, we have to work hard. But our goal is to win the national championship. I m excited. And so is their coach. Our expectations are the same as they ve always been: pride, tradition, hard work, defensive pressure. And we are so talented from the first player to the 10th player, said Nichols. That s what s going to make our team special. 27

31 REVIEW SCHOOL-RECORD SIXTH CONSECUTIVE NATIONAL APPEARANCE COMES TO UNUSUAL END The season came to an unusual end for the Western women s basketball team. The Vikings were 22-6 overall, having a school-record sixth consecutive 20- win season, and were second in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference at But Western s sixth consecutive national tournament appearance proved a short one. The Vikings, the No.3 seed in the West Region of the NCAA Division II National Tournament, suffered an loss to Northwest Nazarene in the opening round. It was the first time since becoming a full member of NCAA II in 1998 that the Vikings didn t win at least one game in the national tourney and the first time since 1994 that they had lost their opening game of post-season play. We had a lot of success and a great record, said Western coach Carmen Dolfo (13 years, ), who ranks among the top 20 of active NCAA II coaches in winning percentage (.726). But when the season ends that way, you feel like you probably didn t reach your potential. Led by senior forward Stacey Miller, an honorable mention Kodak All-American and a first-team Women s Basketball Coaches Association and secondteam Daktronics West Region all-star, the Vikings had a number of impressive efforts over the course of the season. They had winning streaks of seven and eight games, with the last six victories of the latter streak coming in a span of just 12 days. That schedule was the product of a scheduled December road trip to Alaska being postponed because of illness sweeping through the team. We won some big games, and showed what a competitive group we were, because someone always stepped up at the key time, said Dolfo. In the games we lost, I felt like our defense allowed way too many points. We weren t consistent enough there. The Vikings held their opponents to 36.9 percent field goal shooting for the season, and were 21-0 when keeping the opposition under 72 points. But when Western allowed 72 points or more, it won just once, giving up an average of 85.7 points a contest in its six losses. Miller, a unanimous first-team all-gnac pick, averaged a team-high 14.6 points, ranking eighth in the GNAC, and also contributed 5.9 rebounds and 3.0 assists. She ranked fifth nationally in NCAA II in 3-point percentage at.463, connecting on a GNAC-high 57 of her 123 attempts, and set a school career record for 3-point accuracy at 44.3 percent and tied another with point makes. Miller set another school standard by hitting all six of her 3-point attempts in a victory over Westmont CA, and connected on an off-balance trey at the buzzer that gave Western a victory over Saint Martin s. Stacey had an outstanding year, Dolfo said. She made some really big plays and did a good job of providing leadership for us. Three players - sophomore center Susan Rodgers, senior guard Megan Quarterman and junior forward Jenn McGillivray - received all-gnac honorable mention. Rodgers, the tallest player in school history at 6-foot-6, averaged 14.2 points and 6.3 rebounds. She led Western in two statistics, ranking ninth nationally in blocked shots (2.0) and 15th in field goal percentage (.586, 178-of- 304), and scored double-figures in a team-high 23 games. Susan improved a ton, said Dolfo. Not only with her scoring, but in her blocked shots and defense she made huge improvements. Quarterman, who had been Western s top reserve the previous season, moved into the starting lineup and contributed 12.2 points. Quarterman, a GNAC Megan Quarterman academic all-star, scored 34 points, going 10-of-14 from the field and 11-of- 14 on free throws, in a loss at Seattle Pacific, then ranked No.1 nationally in NCAA II. The 34 points are tied for the fourth-most in a game in school history, and are the most ever by a Western guard. Megan got our running game going, Dolfo said. Very few players can put the ball on the floor and drive the way she can. McGillivray, who led Western in scoring and rebounding her first two seasons, moved into Quarterman s reserve role and averaged 12.2 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists while shooting 57.6 percent (114-of-198), the second-best mark in the GNAC. Despite starting just 36 of 83 career games, McGillivray ranks 15th in Western history in career scoring with 1,053 points and needs just 111 more to reach the top 10. She had some injury issues at the beginning and it was a hard season for her, Dolfo said of McGillivray. We decided to bring her off the bench, but she could just as easily have been a starter. Junior forward Tessa DeBoer, a GNAC academic all-star, averaged 9.5 points and led Western with 7.5 rebounds a game. She had 86 offensive rebounds, 38 more than any other Viking. Tessa was steady, but she also had some great games, said Dolfo. She was incredible on the offensive boards, and really kept us in it there. 31

32 WESTERN TOPS GNAC IN NCAA GRAD RATE REPORT Viking student-athletes rank with best regionally and nationally A recent NCAA report on graduation rates shows Western student-athletes graduating at a rate higher than student-athletes at most other schools, sometimes much higher. They also are better in graduation rates than their Western peers. The 2002 NCAA findings show 72 percent of Viking studentathletes receive their degrees in six years or less. That was 19 percentage points higher than the average for student-athletes in the 10-team Great Northwest Athletic Conference (53%), 22 points higher than the national average for schools in NCAA Division II (50%), of which Western is a member; 12 points higher than the national NCAA I average (60%), and 22 points higher than the NCAA III average (50%). Stacey Miller Senior guard Kristy Eggen started every game at the point. Eggen, who had last played in the season, averaged 4.8 points and led Western in assists (5.3) and steals (2.0), ranking fourth and ninth, respectively, in the GNAC. Eggen s assist average was the fourth-highest in school history and the best since , and her 11 assists at Seattle Pacific matched the most in a single game by a Viking since Cheryl Boxx had 13 in Also seeing extensive time at point guard was freshman Samantha Hubbard, the only non-starter to play in all 28 games. Hubbard contributed 2.5 points and 1.6 assists, and hit a driving shot as regulation time expired to force overtime in Western s victory over two-time defending NCAA II national champion Cal Poly Pomona. Kristy started playing well as the season went on, said Dolfo. It was neat for her to come back and finish up her career the way she did. Sam had an incredible freshman year. She showed she s a feisty, hard-working player. The top reserve along the front line was redshirt freshman Tina Donahue, who averaged 4.4 points and 3.0 rebounds. Also seeing regular action were sophomore guard Jodi Gerald, who averaged 3.1 points and 2.0 rebounds, and had 13 points and led a key rally in a victory at Humboldt State; and redshirt freshman center Stephanie Dressel, who contributed 2.3 points and 1.8 rebounds. Completing the roster was freshman guard Dachelle Davis. Western averaged 78.8 points a game, the 12th best mark in NCAA II, ranking seventh in field goal percentage (.478) and ninth in 3-point percentage (.383, ). The Vikings scored 106 and 108 points in consecutive games in late December, accomplishing the feat for just the second time in school history. At times we turned the ball over too much, but for the most part we played pretty well offensively, Dolfo said. A lot of different people had big games. Western s post-season appearance was its 24th straight and the 31st in the 32-year history of the program. Within Washington, Western student-athletes graduated at the highest rate of any public institution, 27 points above Eastern Washington (45%), 13 points above Central Washington (59%), 10 points above Washington State (62%) and five points better than the University of Washington (67%). Western student-athletes also scored 11 points higher on graduation rates than the Western student body in general (72 to 61%). This compares favorably with national averages for Division II schools, where student-athletes edged students in general, 50 to 45 percent. The 2002 NCAA Graduation Rate Reports are based on student-athletes who entered universities during the academic year and graduated in six years or less. Student-athletes are defined as those who received athletics aid such as grants, scholarships, tuition waivers or other assistance from the institution upon initial enrollment. Western s four-class (student-athletes entering ) graduation rate of 71 percent is 17 points better than the GNAC average (54%). It is 21 points better than the Division II average (50%), and 12 points better than the Division I average (59%). Western s four-class graduation rate is also higher than any other public institution in Washington, 22 points better than Eastern Washington (59%), 14 points better than Central Washington (57%), 13 points better than Washington State (56%), and five points better than the University of Washington (66%). Western s four-class graduation rate is eight points better than that of the Western student body in general (63%). Students in general at Division II schools have an average graduation rate of 43 percent and at Division I schools the average graduation rate is 57 percent. Last year, Western won the inaugural GNAC all-sports championship, winning titles in football, volleyball and men s and women s basketball. The Vikings placed second at the NCAA II National Women s Crew Championship, made national appearances in women s basketball and volleyball, and narrowly missed trips to nationals in football, men s basketball and women s golf. The Vikings started the same starting lineup of Miller, DeBoer, Rodgers, Eggen and Quarterman in all 28 games, the first time since that had occurred. 32

35 HISTORY It s difficult to pinpoint just when women s collegiate basketball began at Western. But there s an easy way to find the beginning of the modern era, when the Vikings abandoned the old six-player, limited dribble game for the five-player one. That occurred prior to the season, the same campaign that Lynda Goodrich opened her coaching career. In that first season, the Vikings rolled to a 19-1 record, not losing until the regional finals. The following year, Western defeated Washington State, 48-46, in the AIAW Region 9 title game and went to the AIAW National Tournament. The Vikings won their opening game, but lost to eventual champion Immaculata PAT, Center Theresa Nafziger received All-American honorable mention. Western returned to nationals the following year, again after defeating Washington State, 39-37, to win the regional title. In , Western had some early-season problems, including a crushing by Boise State. With the record at 8-5, Goodrich inserted two freshmen, center Jan Johnston and point guard Tamalyn Nigretto, into the starting lineup, and the two players helped the Vikings run off 13 straight wins. The last of those wins came against Boise State, 76-68, in the regional final. The Vikings made their third and final AIAW National Tournament appearance, but lost both of their games. Through the next four seasons, Western didn t reach the national tournament, but more than held its own in a league that had every major university in the states of Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington. Much of that success can be attributed to forward Jo Metzger, one of the finest athletes the Vikings have had in any sport. Metzger stills holds 13 school records, including the career scoring mark of 1,990 career points. In each of her last two seasons, she was a first-team All-American and was a finalist for the Wade Trophy, given annually to the top female basketball player in the nation. Following the season, the AIAW folded, and women s programs at Western came under the auspices of the NAIA. The Vikings took quickly to the new format, winning the NAIA District 1 playoffs the first year with a victory over Puget Sound in the championship game. They did not go to the NAIA National Tournament, however, as they lost in the Area I playoff, 77-67, to Biola CA. Starting at forward on that Biola team was Carmen Dolfo, who transferred to Western in In the season, she earned second-team NAIA All-American honors. A Proud Heritage The Vikings won the District 1 title that season, as Lynda Dart hit an 18-foot jump shot with six seconds left for a victory over Gonzaga in the deciding game of the championship series. After defeating Portland, 84-55, in the Bi-District I playoff, Western made its first NAIA national appearance, reaching the quarterfinals. In , with forward Anna Rabel receiving second-team NAIA All-America honors, the Vikings posted a 30-5 record, the most victories in school history, and reached the second round at nationals before lost to eventual champion Southern Nazarene OK, The success continued in , as Western finished 26-4 and reached the District 1 championship series for the seventh time in eight years. Forward Alyna Keppler earned second-team NAIA All-America honors and center Cim Hanson received honorable mention. Goodrich, who had a career record of , left the sidelines in Taking over the head coaching duties was Dolfo, who has continued Western s tradition of excellence over the last 13 years before taking a oneyear leave of absence this season. During Dolfo s 13-year tenure, the Vikings have had win seasons and made seven trips to nationals, achieving both feats in each of the last six campaigns. Dolfo directed Western to the national quarterfinals in with center Gina Sampson, who set 18 school records during her career, being named a first-team NAIA All-American as the Vikings finished In , Western earned an at-large berth at nationals, losing in the opening round, and in , its first year as a NCAA Division II member, the Vikings reached the semifinal round at the West Regional. Western reached the NCAA II final four in , winning league and regional titles, and having a 27-4 record. Key figures on all three of those teams were center Celeste Hill, a third-team NAIA All- American in 1998, and a first-team Kodak All-American in 2000, and guard Amanda Olsen. In , the Vikings got to the semifinal round of the West Regional before losing to host and eventual national champion Cal Poly Pomona, and in , they reached the regional final before losing to the Broncos, who again went on to win the NCAA II title. 41 Six of Western s seven losses came against teams ranked either in the NCAA Division II or NAIA Division I national polls, including three to Montana State-Billings, and two to NAIA finalist Simon Fraser Led by a core of six seniors, including three who played together for four years and made three national tournament appearances, Western had perhaps the most successful season in its storied history. The Vikings were 27-4, won Pacific West Conference (16-2) and NCAA Division II West Region championships, rated No.5 in the final national poll and No.1 among Northwest small colleges, and reached a national semifinal for the first time in school history. After an win over Cal Poly Pomona in the regional tourney final, Western traveled to Pine Bluff, Ark., for the Elite Eight, defeating Slippery Rock PA, 84-67, before falling in the semifinals to eventual champion Northern Kentucky, 80-74, in a game where the Vikings trailed by just one with 21 seconds left. Leading the six seniors was senior forward Celeste Hill, who earned first-team Kodak NCAA II All-America honors as well as being named all-ncaa Tournament, Most Valuable Player of the West Regional, first-team Little All-Northwest and first-team all-pacwest, being the top vote-getter. Hill led the team in scoring at 17.0 points a game and blocked shots (1.6 avg.), and also contributed 6.9 rebounds. She had career-bests in all shooting categories, hitting 52.5 percent from the field, making half of her 22 3-point attempts, and connecting on a team-best 80.6 percent of her free throws. She was a first-team Little All-Northwest choice and earned first-team all-pacwest honors for the second straight season. Olsen scored 33 points against Seattle Pacific, the most ever by a Viking backcourt player. Hill and Olsen, who led Western to three straight national tournament appearances, placed themselves prominently among the school s career leaders. Hill finished third in career scoring (1,658), second in blocked shots (163) and tied for ninth in rebounds (752). Olsen ended her four years sixth in scoring (1,367) and tied for ninth in steals (202). Senior forward Sara Nichols averaged a careerhigh 8.5 points, but more importantly averaged 5.7 rebounds and led the Vikings in assists (4.8 avg.), finishing third (448) among Western s career leaders in that category. Senior center Lisa Berendsen averaged 10.6 points and a teamhigh 7.4 rebounds while shooting a schoolrecord 67.6 percent on field goals. While the Vikings were often dominating, winning 20 games by 14 or more points, it wasn t always an easy road. Coach Carmen Dolfo, the Northwest small college Coach of the Year, missed two games as she gave birth to her first child on Feb. 12. Assistant Gina Sampson coached the team in Dolfo s absence. Western was dominant at both ends of the floor, finishing second nationally in field goal percentage (48.5 percent) and 19th in field goal percentage defense (36.0). The Vikings were also 10th in scoring margin (16.5 avg.), averaging 75.9 points a game while allowing just The Vikings were perfect in 12 games at Sam Carver Gymnasium, winning them by an average of 25.3 points per game Despite having six players, including the top four scorers, from the previous season graduate, Western reached national play for a schoolrecord fourth consecutive time. The Vikings were 21-8 overall, placed second in the Pacific West Conference at They clinched a post-season berth by winning their last four regular-season contests and reached the semifinals of the West Regional of the NCAA Division II National Tournament, defeating Central Washington, 74-66, in an openinground contest before losing to eventual national champion Cal Poly Pomona, Western had beaten the Broncos, 91-76, in Bellingham early in the season NCAA Division II Semifinalists 41

42 The Vikings averaged 79.1 points a game, a mark that ranked 10th nationally in NCAA II, using blistering outside shooting and a balanced attack that had nine players average 6.0 points a game or more. Western ranked third nationally in 3-point percentage (40.9) and eighth in 3-pointers made, hitting 7.2 a game. Guard Jodie Kaczor, the only returning starter, was the only player to start all 29 games. She earned first-team all-pacwest honors, averaging 11.9 points and 2.9 assists and ranking seventh nationally in 3-point percentage (40.6, 79-of-185). Western, ranked No.11 in the final NCAA II Coaches Top 25, won the inaugural Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship with a 16-2 mark, then won their opening game at regionals, defeating Sonoma State, 71-60, in a semifinal contest. That put the Vikings into the regional final, where they fell to host Cal Poly Pomona, 71-70, on two controversial free throws with two seconds left. The Broncos went on to win all three of their games at the Elite Eight by double digits. It marked the third straight time Western had been knocked out of the national tournament by the eventual champion. Sophomore center Jenn McGillivray, a secondteam all-league pick, led the team in scoring (13.1 avg.) and rebounding (5.6), but the key for Western was balance. Seven players averaged 7.4 points a game or better, and six averaged 4.0 rebounds or more. Senior guard Jodie Kaczor was the only Viking to be a first-team all-gnac pick. She averaged 10.7 points and completed her four years as Western s career leader in 3-point perentage (38.8) and free throw percentage (81.9). Also averaging in double figures were junior guard Megan Quarterman, who averaged 12.7 points despite coming off the bench in 26 of the 29 games, and junior forward Stacey Miller, who contributed 10.6 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists. The Vikings were 22-6 overall, having a schoolrecord sixth consecutive 20-win season, and placed second in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference at But Western s sixth straight national tournament appearance proved a short one. The Vikings, seeded No.3 in the West Regional, suffered an loss to Northwest Nazarene in the opening round. It was the first time since becoming a full member of NCAA II in 1998 that the Vikings didn t win at least one game in the national tourney and the first time since 1994 that they had lost their opening game of post-season play. Led by senior forward Stacey Miller, an honorable mention Kodak All-American and a firstteam Women s Basketball Coaches Association and second-team Daktronics West Region allstar, the Vikings had a number of impressive efforts over the course of the season. The Vikings held their opponents to 36.9 percent field goal shooting, and were 21-0 when keeping the opposition under 72 points. Miller, a unanimous first-team all-gnac pick, averaged a team-high 14.6 points and also contributed 5.9 rebounds and 3.0 assists. The 34 points were the most ever by a Western guard. McGillivray averaged 12.2 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists while shooting 57.6 percent (114- of-198), the second-best mark in the GNAC. It added 54,233 square feet of floor space at a cost of $1.04 million. The most significant addition was the present main gymnasium. The facility opened in time for the basketball season, although it wasn t named for Carver until the dedication ceremony the following spring. Dr. James L. Jarrett, then Western s president, and Dr. E.V. Pullias, a professor at the University of Southern California, were the main speakers at the gathering. Basketball has been the primary event at Carver Gym. The Vikings have racked up an impressive record at Carver Gym, posting a (.854) record over 31 seasons. Western was a much different place when Carver Gym was built. It was a state college, not a university, and the enrollment was a third of the 12,000-plus it is today. Many of the buildings that dot the campus landscape today were either brand new or still many years away from construction. Perhaps the most unique feature of Carver Gym was that it wasn t built on solid ground. It was constructed on a bog, meaning pilings had to be put in the ground before the foundation could be laid. Money spent on the pilings meant a few other plans had to be delayed. The brick that was supposed to be put on the outer walls was never added, and the final set of bleachers wasn t installed until There have been numerous renovations and additions to the building over the last two decades. The most recent improvement came in 2000 with new bleachers, including over 400 theatre-style seats. Since opening, Carver Gym has been host to a number of events. Acts like Jefferson Airplane, Duke Ellington, Simon & Garfunkel, the Tubes, Pat Paulsen, the Smothers Brothers and Ike & Tina Turner have played in the facility. There also have been NBA pre-season games, the Harlem Globetrotters, national basketball teams from Australia, Korea, Japan and Taiwan, and the junior national women s team from the Soviet Union. The U.S. and Canadian national volleyball teams played a match at Carver Gym, and Vice President Hubert Humphrey spoke in the building. CARVER GYM FIRSTS AND BESTS First 100-point Game...
