Experiment: How does the angle of shooting at a soccer goal effect goal scoring? Hypothesis: We believe if the kicker has a direct shot in front of the soccer goal the kicker should score. When Kicking from a higher angle closer to 90 degrees there is less space to score a goal. Materials: Kicker Soccer Balls Soccer Goals Soccer Flags Soccer Cones Tape Measure Note Book Pen
Procedure Find a soccer field Measure a distance about 3 metres from each side of the soccer goal Place a flag on each targeted area (you ll see how this works in the video) Work out your shooting distance depending on ability Evenly place your cones into positions The positions are 0 degrees, 25 degrees right, 45 degrees right, 65 degrees right, 85 degrees right, 25 degrees left, 45 degrees left, 65 degrees left and 85 degrees left. Each kicker gets 3 shots from each position. 3 shots from each position makes out as 27 shots!!!!
Some of our materials.
Time to use the measuring tape guys!
Always important to wave to the fans!!!
Measuring the 12 metres.
We measured 12 metres from each cone.
People getting a bit nervous! Is that really 12 metres!??!!!
Shooting angle 25 degrees
Shooting Angle 45 degrees
Shooting Angle 65 degrees
Shooting Angle 85 degrees
This is a great shot because you can see the protractor shape being mapped out. Shots are about to be fired!
Jack about to take a shot. Any idea from which angle?
Another great shot of all the various angles!
Stephen Shooting this time. What angle is he shooting from? Here s a clue. Steven is beside Jack. Is that helpful?
Here s some more shots for you.
Daniel Shooting here. But from where? Here s a clue! Start counting cones!
More great shots from Caherconlish N.S.

Are you starting to understand our experiment? Remember the closest you are to 90 degrees the chance to score decreases.

The experiment in the soccer pitch was difficult for a number of reasons. Firstly the weather effected things as it was very windy. Secondly the distance of 12 metres was difficult for less experienced kickers and finally the area we were shooting into made things very difficult. We decided to use our indoor soccer hall in Caherconlish and changed the variables of the experiment. So inside there was no wind, the distance was shorter and the goal smaller. This was less formal than the outside experiment but just as enjoyable. For example instead of using metres we used Mr Maloney s size 10 s

Stephen in Charge! What angle is he pointing to?
Below is the data we have found. In this chart we have compared the average success rate of right footed kickers to left footed kickers, boys to girls and the average success rate overall. What do you make of the data? How did the comparisons work out? Average Success Rate Right-Footed Players Left-Footed Players Boys Girls Everyone 21% 23% 10% 15% 31%
Below is the average success rate of each shot. What does the data tell us? Which was the least successful position overall? Can we improve? This is what performance analysists do. They will analyse data such as this to help coaches improve their players. Average Success Rate out of 3 Shots R 45 R 65 R 85 R 25 L 45 L 65 L 85 L
Below is a graph comparing the overall estimate before the experiment compared to actual successful kicks. Who was closest in their estimation to actual score? Who was furthest? 30 Estimation of Shot Accuracy Timmy B Tyrese Daniel Sarah Timmy M Jodie Aaliyah Conor Andrew Keira Prediction Actual
Below are some informal Pre-test results that the pupils took part in before we formally took part in the experiment. This was to help us to prepare for the experiment to ensure we knew what our objective was and how we would proceed. Pretest Results Pretest 1 0 Kate Ava Mack Jack Billy Sophie Stephen Avril
