2 Tulane Men s Basketball Game Notes Page 2 DAVE DICKERSON Head Basketball Coach Maryland, 1990 Second Season The campaign marks Dave Dickerson s second season as the head coach of the Tulane Green Wave men s basketball program. Dickerson has an overall record of and a Conference USA mark of Tulane has a record of 9-10 in his second season, and has been tough to beat at Fogelman Arena with a 7-4 mark. When Dickerson became the 22nd head men s basketball coach on April 1, 2005, his first goal was to focus on turning a group of individuals into more than a team; his goal is to make Tulane Basketball into a family. After all, a strong, tight-knit family has been the key to his own success. During his first season at the helm of the Green Wave basketball program, Dickerson was faced with perhaps a challenge no other first-year basketball coach in NCAA history has ever had to overcome. On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall south of New Orleans and the effects of the storm were devestating as levees broke and flooded a majority of the city. The Green Wave settled in College Station, Texas, home of Texas A&M University, and Dickerson, along with his players and staff, began their first campaign together. Despite the challenges, Dickerson led Tulane to a overall record and a 6-8 Conference USA mark, which tied the Wave for sixth place. The Green Wave continued to jell late in the season, winning seven of its final 12 games, including a first round victory over Marshall in the Conference USA Tournament. TU dropped a hard-fought decision to eventual champion and NCAA Elite Eight team, Memphis, on its home floor in the C-USA Tourney quarterfinals. With just one season under his belt, Dickerson has already gone through and been faced with much more than any basketball coach in the nation may ever endure. The Wave is 2-5 overall and 1-2 in C-USA road games this season. TU s two league losses away from home have been by a combined total of seven points. The Wave fell in overtime at Rice, 75-70, and dropped a decision at SMU in its last road game on Jan. 24. For the year, Tulane is averaging 67.2 points and 38.5 rebounds per game and is shooting 43.8 percent from the field, 32.6 percent from behind the threepoint line and 65.5 percent from the free-throw line. Freshman Kevin Sims in the only other Green Wave player averaging double figure scoring with 10 points per outing, and is averaging a team best 3.5 assists per clip. Sophomore Robinson Louisme is the top shot blocker with 1.5 rejections per outing. SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES: Southern Miss (14-6, 4-3 C-USA) has won three out of its last four games with its one loss coming at the hands of nationally ranked Memphis on the road by just three points, USM got off to a hot start this season by claiming victories in its first seven games. The Golden Eagles have been tough to beat at home this season, sporting a 12-1 overall and 2-1 league mark this season. Southern Miss lone loss at home this season was to Memphis, 75-62, on Jan. 13. Since then, USM has reeled off two straight wins. Freshman Jeremy Wise leads the Eagles in scoring with 16.3 points per game, while classmate Sai Quon Stone is the only other player averaging double figure scoring with 10 points per contest. USM is averaging 70.1 points and 39.1 rebounds per game and is shooting 45 percent from the field, 33 percent from behind the three-point line and 65.4 percent from the foul line. THE SERIES: Saturday s game marks the 63rd all-time meeting between Tulane and Southern Miss, and the Green Wave leads the series, The two teams will meet for the 32nd straight year, which is currently the longest continuous opponent for Tulane. The Wave played LSU for 62 straight years from Tulane has an all-time record of in Hattiesburg, and fell in its last appearance on the road at USM a year ago. TU s last victory at Southern Miss was on Jan. 15, 2002, LAST SECOND AGONY: Tulane has lost three games this season with less than a minute to play, including two contests in the final two seconds. The Green Wave had played itself into position to win each of the three games, but came up with the short end of the stick in all three outings. TCU edged the Green Wave with a shot at the buzzer, 53-51, while Tulsa drilled a three-pointer with 2.5 seconds remaining to claim a one-point victory last Thursday. In its game at SMU on Jan. 24, the Mustangs overcame a double-digit deficit and scored what proved to be the game-winning basket with just under a minute remaining and won,

TU D-FENCE AMONG C-USA, NATION S BEST: Tulane s stingy defense has been smothering this season. TU is allowing just 65.6 points per game and limiting its opponents to 38.2 percent from the field. Only five teams have managed to score over 70 points on the Wave this season: Butler-77; LSU-74; UNO-84; Rice-75 (1/10); Tulsa-79. TU ranks first among league schools and 10th nationally in field goal percentage defense. WINNING WITH DEFENSE: The one constant for Tulane this season has been its defense. The Green Wave has held 12 opponents to a field goal percentage of 38.9 percent or lower. In its nine wins, TU s opponents combined for a shooting percentage of 36 percent ( ). In its 10 losses, six teams have managed to shoot better than 40 percent, LSU-.407, TCU-.412, UNO-.408, Tulsa-.450, while two others, Butler-.536, Marshall-.509 have shot better than 50 percent, and the Wave has only suffered two losses this season by double figures (Butler-40; Indiana State-12). In 10 defeats, TU s opponents have combined for a 40.2 shooting percentage ( ). TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT: Since conference season began, TU is 2-5, but has lost its five games by an average of 4.2 points. Tulane fell by two points at SMU (55-53), five points to Rice (75-70) in overtime, six points to Marshall (79-73), seven points to UAB (67-60) and just a single point to Tulsa (79-78).

LOUISME CONTINUES TO GROW INTO A FORCE IN THE PAINT: Sophomore Robinson Louisme continues to be a dominant force in the paint for TU this season. The 6 7 center is averaging 7.1 points per game for the year, but has improved his scoring average to 9.1 points per outing during conference play. Louisme has reached double figures six times this season and three times during C-USA play, including a career-best 19 points in the conference opener at Rice on Jan. 10. He also grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds against the Owls it that same game. He is shooting 55 percent (58-106) from the field for the season, but has increased his accuracy to nearly 58 percent (29-50) in league action. CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARDS: Junior David Gomez is Tulane s top rebounder this season with 6.4 boards per game. He grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds against UAB and produced the eighth double-figure rebounding game of his career with 10 boards at SMU. In games earlier this season, he also grabbed 10 boards against Huston-Tillotson and New Orleans for a total of four games with 10 or more rebounds. MOORE S VIEW FROM DOWNTOWN INCLUDES TU S TOP-FIVE: Chris Moore is TU s go-to guy from the behind the three-point line, and the 6 5 senior has produced 123 career treys, which ranks him among the top-five long distance shooters in school history. Moore buried two treys at SMU and moved into fourth place among the school s all-time three-point field goal leaders. Moore is just seven shy of overtaking Michael Christian s ( ) fourth place total of 129. He leads TU with 31 treys this season and was also the top shooter last season with 53 treys, which ranked fifth among the TU s single season leaders. TULANE S BENCH MARK: Dave Dickerson has seen steady results from his bench this season. The Wave has outscored its opponents bench, , and is averaging 23.7 points per game. TU S SET-UP MAN: For the second straight season, Andrew Garcia is one of Tulane s top assists leaders. In 18 games, Garcia is averaging 3.6 assists per game. He dished out a season-high six assists at home against Ark.-Pine Bluff on Dec. 22. If Garcia completes the season as TU s top assists leader, he will become just the 10th player in school history to lead the Green Wave in assists during consecutive seasons. The last player to pull off this feat was Waitari Marsh ( ) during the and seasons. PUCKETT GROWING INTO VETERAN DURING SOPHOMORE SEASON: Daniel Puckett has emerged as one of Tulane s top players this season. Puckett has reached double figures in four games, including a career-best 14 points on four three pointers, seven rebounds and three assists at Rice (1/8). He has started 13 of 19 games this season and is averaging 7.1 points, good enough for fourth on the team, and his 4.7 rebounds ranks third. However, during conference play, he has raised his production and is averaging 8.0 points per game. A year ago as a freshman, Daniel Puckett earned playing time in all 29 games and averaged 11 minutes, 1.8 points and 2.0 rebounds per outing. NEW ORLEANS BLOCK CITY: In 19 games this season, Tulane has registered 123 blocked shots, an average of 6.5 per game. TU s average leads all C-USA teams and ranks 10th nationally. Robinson Louisme leads Tulane with 29, while David Gomez is second with 27. Donnie Stith follows Gomez with 25. All three players rank among C-USA s top-10 leaders for blocked shots. Louisme is sixth, while Gomez and Stith are eighth and ninth, respectively.

5 Tulane Men s Basketball Game Notes Page 5 WHAT DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES: If a record is any way to judge a team s progress, then Tulane head coach Dave Dickerson has the Wave ahead of schedule from a year ago. The Green Wave already has nine victories this season compared to just six (7-12) this time last season, and is already over halfway to last season s victory total of 12. OWNING THE LANE: Tulane is having its way against its opponents inside the paint this season, outscoring its foes, TU poured in 40 points inside the lane against UNO s on two different occasions, and outscored Charleston Southern, 30-24, inside the paint. In its game against Loyola (La.), the Greenies dominated its neighbor, 35-8, in the lane. Although the Wave was saddled with a loss game at Indiana State, Tulane outscored the Sycamores, 34-18, in the paint. TU owned a advantage vs. Huston-Tillotson, but narrowly came up short against No. 10/12 LSU, Despite a last second loss at TCU, Tulane outscored the Horned Frogs, 34-27, in the paint, and out dueled UAPB, 38-32, in its last home game. TU produced 30 points at Richmond, 32 at Rice, 24 vs. UAB and 36 vs. Marshall. GOMEZ AMONG C-USA S TOP PLAYERS: David Gomez is ranked among top Conference USA players in several categories, including scoring (9th), rebounding (6th), field goal percentage (7th), free throw percentage (6th), blocked shots (8th) and defensive rebounds (4th). TULANE MAKING OPPONENTS PAY FOR MISCUES: Tulane is making its opponents learn the hard way from its mistakes this season. In 19 games, the Green Wave has scored a combined 293 points off 247 opponent turnovers. SIMS MAKING IMPACT: Freshman Kevin Sims has made an immediate impact on this year s squad. The newcomer has finished in double figure scoring in 11 games, including three straight games on two occasions. His earned a career high 21 points against Buffalo, and he dished out a career-best six assists vs. Huston-Tillotson. Sims is second on the team in scoring (10.0), three-pointers (22), free throws (54) and first for assists (67). A true freshman, Sims has started 10 of 19 games and is shooting 40.0 percent from the field and 84 percent from the foul line. TULANE S INSIDE-OUTSIDE COMBINATION: The inside play of junior David Gomez and sophomore Robinson Louisme coupled with the outside duo of senior Chris Moore and freshman Kevin Sims has helped the Green Wave become a balanced team this season. Gomez and Lousime are TU s biggest threat in the paint, averaging 14.2 points and 7.1 points per game, respectively, and each player is shooting 52 percent or better from the field. Moore and Sims have combined for 53 three pointers. Moore leads the team with 31 treys, while Sims is right behind with 22. DISHING THE ROCK: The Tulane trio of Kevin Sims, Andrew Garcia and Chris Moore are TU s top three assists leaders, each totaling 45 or more this season. Sims has a team-high 67 assists, which ranks 11th among C-USA players, while and Garcia has 64, and Moore with 46. Moore owns the single-game high by a TU player this season with seven against Huston-Tillotson. FRIENDLY FOGELMAN: Since Fogelman (then Tulane Gym) opened in 1933, the Green Wave has posted a (.670) record in the venerable arena. MR. STITH S NEIGHBORHOOD: Junior Donnie Stith takes a lot of pride in his work area. Stith patrols the paint for the Wave, contesting shots and collecting rebounds. Stith has three games this season with 11 or more boards, including 11 vs. Buffalo and East Carolina and 10 vs. New Orleans, and is the team s second-leading rebounder (5.4). He is also TU s third leading shot-blocker with 25 for the season and 1.4 rejections per game. DEJA VU: Junior David Gomez loves to play on the road.
