2 Tulane Men s Basketball Game Notes Page 2 DAVE DICKERSON Head Basketball Coach Maryland, 1990 Second Season Dave Dickerson is in his second season as the head coach of the Tulane Green Wave men s basketball program. He has an overall record of and a Conference USA mark of 6-8. Dickerson has led TU to a 4-3 mark this season, the team s best start since the campaign. When Dickerson became the 22nd head men s basketball coach on April 1, 2005, his first goal was to focus on turning a group of individuals into more than a team; his goal is to make Tulane Basketball into a family. After all, a strong, tight-knit family has been the key to his own success. During his first season at the helm of the Green Wave basketball program, Dickerson was faced with perhaps a challenge no other first-year basketball coach in NCAA history has ever had to overcome. On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall south of New Orleans and the effects of the storm were devestating as levees broke and flooded a majority of the city. The Green Wave settled in College Station, Texas, home of Texas A&M University, and Dickerson, along with his players and staff, began their first campaign together. Despites the challenges, Dickerson led Tulane to a overall record and a 6-8 Conference USA mark, which tied the Wave for sixth place. The Green Wave continued to jell late in the season, winning seven of its final 12 games, including a first round victory over Marshall in the Conference USA Tournament. TU dropped a hard-fought decision to eventual champion and NCAA Elite Eight team, Memphis, on its home floor in the C-USA Tourney quarterfinals. With just one season under his belt, Dickerson has already gone through and been faced with much more than any basketball coach in the nation may ever endure. Tulane has played just two games away from its on-campus home this season, including at Indiana State and vs. LSU at New Orleans Arena. The Green Wave is 4-2 at home this season, including a 4-1 record at Fogelman Arena, and has won four out of its last five home contests since falling to Butler (currently ranked No. 15/14) in the season opener. TU s lone loss in its last five games was a decision to No. 10/12 LSU last Saturday. In its four home wins this season, Tulane has averaged 75 points per game, while limiting its opponents to 60 points in each contest. For the year, the Wave is averaging 64.3 points and 35.3 rebounds per game and is shooting 46 percent from the field, 30 percent from behind the three-point line and 62 percent from the free-throw line. Junior David Gomez, senior Chris Moore and freshman Kevin Sims are TU s top scorers with 12.9, 10.4 and 10.0 points per game, respectively, while Gomez is also the leading rebounder with 5.3 boards per contest. Sims and senior Andrew Garcia lead the team in assists with 22 apiece. SCOUTING THE BULLS: A member of the Mid-America Conference, Buffalo (6-2, 0-0 MAC) enters the Tulane contest riding a three-game win streak and has won five out of its last six contests. The Bulls losses this season were on the road at South Florida (77-61) and at Evansville (74-44), which came on Nov. 19. Since then Buffalo has rebounded with wins over Iona (65-54), at Temple (64-62) and Niagara (74-62). The Bulls are 2-2 on the road this season and are averaging 66.0 points but allowing its opponents 69.3 in away games. Yassin Idbihi is one of three Bulls players averaging double figures with 13.8 points per game, while Eric Moore is the second-leading scorer with 13.1 points per outing, and also leads the team in assists (28). Parnell Smith is the third UB player in double figures with 11.1 points per contest. Idbihi is also the top rebounder with 9.1 boards per game. The Bulls are averaging 64.6 points and 36.8 points per game and are shooting 41 percent from the field, 29-percent from behind the three-point line and 69-percent from the foul line. THE SERIES: Wednesday s game marks the second all-time meeting between Tulane and Buffalo and the Green Wave leads the overall series, 1-0. The first and only previous meeting between the two schools took place in New Orleans on Jan. 7, 1982, and the Greenies dispatched the Bulls, YOUNG PUCKETT GROWING UP QUICKLY: Last season as a freshman, Daniel Puckett earned playing time in all 29 games and averaged 11 minutes, 1.8 points and 2.0 rebounds per outing. Puckett has made large strides from his rookie season to his sophomore campaign. Through seven games, he has played in every contest and has earned four starting assignments. More importantly, he has improved his per game averages to 6.0 points and 4.9 rebounds in 19.1 minutes. He registered a career-best 10 points and barely missed out on his first career double-double with nine rebounds against Huston-Tillotson.

In conference action, he improved his scoring average to 6.7 points per outing and dished out 3.4 assists per game. THE POSSE RETURNS: In the 1990s, former Tulane coach Perry Clark developed a mass substitution system where he subbed five players at a time that famously became known as the Posse. The first group included former players Pointer Williams ( ), Kim Lewis, ( ), Carlin Hartman ( ), Matt Greene ( ) and Makeba Perry ( ). From to the campaign, the group led Tulane to a record and to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances ( and one NIT showing ( ). Tulane head coach Dave Dickerson evoked memories of the Posse when he subbed five players at a time against cross-town rival New Orleans. The first five players to be subbed included Kevin Sims, Andrew Garcia, David Gomez, Kory Castine and Matt Wheaton. GREEN WAVE PICKED NINTH IN PRESEASON COACHES POLL: The Tulane men s basketball team was picked to finish in ninth place during the 2007 Conference USA regular season race according to the 2006 C-USA preseason coaches poll. The Green Wave posted a overall record last season, but managed to finish in a tie for sixth place in the C-USA standings with a 6-8 league mark, despite being picked to finish last in last year s coaches poll. Tulane advanced to the Conference USA quarterfinals with a win over Marshall, but fell to eventual champion Memphis in the quarters. FIVE NEWCOMERS BEGIN FIRST SEASON AT TU: Four of Tulane s five newcomers will see their first collegiate action this season. TU s newcomers include the freshmen trio of Asim McQueen, Kevin Sims and Johnny Mayhane (Mahan), junior-transfer Eric Vianney from Illinois State and junior walk-on Kevin Crook.
