5 Season Preview Lady Pirates Ready To Build On Last season, the Armstrong Atlantic State women s basketball squad captured lightning in a bottle, becoming the first No. 6 seed in Peach Belt Conference Tournament history - men s or women s - to reach the semifinals. The Lady Pirates are hoping to keep that lightning in order to make a charge to the top of the PBC standings this season. It will be a monumental task for a program that hasn t had a winning record in six seasons and plays in the tougher half of perhaps the toughest Division II women s basketball conference in the nation, but head coach Roger Hodge and the Lady Pirates feel they have the pieces in place. Only four players return from last season s squad that finished last season, but went 7-12 in the Peach Belt. The seven league wins were the most AASU has collected since and the trip to the PBC Semifinals was the first for the Lady Pirates since The list of returnees begins and ends with two-time All- Peach Belt Conference forward Zandrique Cason (6-0, Sr., Mesa, Ariz.). Cason again led the Senior Zandrique Cason has led the Peach Belt Conference in rebounding each of the last two seasons and last year ranked 21st in NCAA Division II in rebounds. Peach Belt Conference in rebounding, averaging 10.6 per game, and led the Lady Pirates offensively, averaging 15.4 points per game. Already the Liberty transfer has made her presence felt in the league and on the AASU charts, scoring 881 points in two seasons. Two other returnees had opponents seeing double most of last season as twins Shaletra Senior Shaletra Hodge averaged 5.2 rebounds per game and helped AASU to its best rebounding margin (+4.4) since Hodge (5-10, Sr., Carthage, Texas) and Shanetra Hodge (5-9, Sr., Carthage, Texas) combined to average 16.1 points and 9.8 rebounds per game for AASU in their first season with the Lady Pirates. The final returner for AASU is senior point guard Marloes Renskers (5-7, Sr., Enschede, The Netherlands). Renskers led the Lady Pirates in assists for the second straight season, collecting 98 in , and in two seasons already ranks eighth on the all-time AASU assist chart. Coach Hodge and the Lady Pirates welcome 10 newcomers for the season, led by a trio of players who are making a homecoming, returning to Savannah to continue their collegiate careers. Senior point guard Anita Griffin (5-5, Sr., Savannah, Ga.), junior center Lee Gloyd (6-2, Jr., Savannah, Ga.) and junior forward Tishay Lewis (5-9, Jr., Savannah, Ga.) all starred at A.E. Beach High School in Savannah, then left the Coastal Empire area to begin AASU was the first No. 6 seed to win twice at the PBC Tournament

6 Season Preview Late Season Success In their collegiate careers. All three return to join the Lady Pirates for this season - Griffin, from Fort Valley State, where she was a three-time team defensive player of the year; Gloyd, from Morris Brown, where she averaged 13 points and 10 rebounds a game in her freshman season; and Tishay Lewis, who earned All- Southern Conference Freshman Team honors at UT- Chattanooga and recorded just the third triple-double in school history. Griffin and Renskers will handle the point guard duties in , along with Briana Milam (5-8, Jr., Wittmann, Ariz.), who transfers to AASU from Yavapai College. The two-guard position looks to be in the capable hands of another Arizona transfer, Tasha Washington (5-8, Jr., Phoenix, Ariz.). Washington averaged 15.7 points and 6.8 rebounds last season at Scottsdale CC, earning All-Region and All-Conference honors. A pair of freshmen - Alicia Durham (5-6, Fr., Macon, Ga.) and Carena Thomas (5-6, Fr., Hinesville, Ga.) will also see time at the position. Lewis and Shanetra Hodge are the Lady Pirates small forwards, but Hutchinson CC transfer Pam Mayes (5-8, Jr., Columbia, S.C.) will also see action. Mayes averaged 12.7 points and 6.8 rebounds per game as a sophomore for the Lady Dragons. The power forward spot will see immense competition between Shaletra Hodge and two transfers, Vandy Noldon (5-11, Jr., Wasco, Calif.) and Emily Perpich (6-0, Jr., Coldspring, N.Y.). Noldon was an All-Conference honoree at Porterville College in Senior Shanetra Hodge was AASU s second-leading scorer in , averaging 8.9 points per game. California, averaging 17.8 points and 11.1 rebounds per game, while Perpich ranked 9th in the NJCAA Division II in field goal percentage for Monroe CC last season. Gloyd and Cason will man the five spot in the lineup as the Lady Pirates sport 10 players on their roster that are 5-8 or taller. The schedule includes 19 league games and several tough non-conference matchups, including opening the season at the FMU/Sleep Inn Classic on Nov against Pfeiffer and Anderson. The Lady Pirates also welcome back intra-state rival Valdosta State to the schedule, as well as taking road trips to perennial NCAA participants Shaw and Rollins. AASU will also host the Chatham Orthopaedics Basketball Classic for a third-straight season, this year making the tournament a combined men s and women s event. The Lady Pirates will face Fort Valley State and Wingate in the Dec tournament. The Peach Belt Conference coaches have picked the Lady Pirates to finish sixth in the league, the same place they picked AASU to finish last season, with Kennesaw State picked to knock off defending PBC champion USC Aiken for the league crown. With a tough conference, a challenging schedule and plenty of depth, the Lady Pirates hope to improve on last season s late-year success and crack the top half of the league standings in ! Armstrong Junior College was established by the Mayor of Savannah and other public officials in Housed in the beautiful and historic Armstrong House, a gift to the city from the family of George F. Armstrong, Armstrong Junior College grew over the years to occupy eight additional buildings in the Forsyth Park and Monterey Square areas. In 1959, as Armstrong College of Savannah, it became a two-year unit of the University System. The Board of Regents conferred four-year status on Armstrong in 1964 and the college moved to its present 250-acre location, a gift from Donald Livingston and the Mills B. Lane Foundation, in December of Additional buildings joined the eight original structures as Armstrong added professional and graduate programs and tripled in size. In July of 1996, the Board of Regents voted to rename the college to Armstrong Atlantic State University to reflect its mission and identity. 28 Season Review The AASU women s basketball team finished the season with an overall record, but won seven Peach Belt Conference games, the most in the last five seasons, and made Conference history by becoming the first No. 6 seed - men or women - to advance to the PBC Tournament semifinals. The Lady Pirates struggled out of the gate, dropping their first five games, but rebounded to win four of their next five, including a season-series sweep of cross-town rival Savannah State. AASU then pulled off its second win over a ranked team in as many seasons as the Lady Pirates shocked defending PBC champion and NCAA Division II Final Four participant Columbus State, 61-45, at home on January 12. The Lady Pirates would endure three separate threegame losing streaks in conference play after that, but sandwiched around the streaks were some exciting victories - a win against perennial PBC power Francis Marion and a last-second win at Augusta State in which senior Lexie Martin drained a baseline shot with no time left for the victory. On the final day of the regular season, the Lady Pirates picked up some needed momentum heading into the PBC tournament with a win over Kennesaw State, Senior Lexie Martin scored her 1,000th point at Kennesaw State on February 2, Martin finished her AASU career as the Lady Pirates fourth all-time leading scorer with 1,119 career points. AASU s first win over the Lady Owls since Shaletra and Shanetra Hodge combined to average 16.1 points and 9.8 rebounds per game in their first season with AASU. 97, a span of 11 contests. The Lady Pirates entered the PBC Tournament as the No. 6 seed from the South Division and knocked off the No. 3 seed from the North Division, UNC Pembroke, in the first round. AASU then followed up their victory with their second win over the South Division s No. 1 seed, Kennesaw State, in a span of six days, defeating the Lady Owls, The wins represented the first time a No. 6 seed had won two games at the league championships and gave the Lady Pirates their fourth trip to the PBC Tournament semifinals in school history. AASU played hard in the semifinals but fell short to eventual PBC Tournament champion Georgia College & State University, Junior Zandrique Cason capped another standout year for the Lady Pirates, earning All-PBC and All-PBC Tournament honors as she led the league in rebounding for the second consecutive season, averaging 10.6 boards per game to go along with her 15.4 points per game. Cason s 448 points were the eighth-most single-season total in school history and her 308 rebounds were the fourth-most in school history. In just two seasons, Cason already ranks in the top 10 in six separate categories for the Lady Pirates and needs just 119 points for 1,000 in her AASU career. Senior Lexie Martin reached the magical plateau of 1,000 career points on February 2 at Kennesaw State and ended her four-year career at AASU with 1,119 career points, fourth-best all-time. Martin also finished as the Lady Pirates all-time leading free throw shooter, hitting 76.8 percent of her career free throws. The Houma, La., native also finished as AASU s second-leading three-point shooter and steals artist, while also finishing third in assists and fourth in games played. The Lady Pirates also said good-bye to Melissa Germany, who graduated from AASU in 2002 and ended her three-year playing career as the school s fifth-leading shot blocker all-time. Lexie Martin became AASU s sixth 1,000 point scorer on Feb. 2,

31 Since its inception in 1991, the Peach Belt Conference has worked tirelessly to become one of the elite conferences in NCAA Division II. Now entering its 12th season with 17 national championships and 15 national finalists, the PBC has accomplished that goal. Starting with only two championships in 1991, in men's and women's basketball, the conference has expanded to 12 championship sports with the addition of women's soccer in the fall of The conference traces its roots back to November of 1988 when 11 schools first met in Greenville, S.C. to form a Division II conference. Following a second meeting on Dec. 3, 1989, five of those 11 schools, plus two others, formed the Peach Belt and begin play in The Peach Belt was less than a year old before capturing a national championship. The Columbus State golf team took the honor by winning the 1992 national crown, the first of three golf championships the Cougars own. The PBC has seen continued success in all sports with national rankings and multiple NCAA appearances in every sport last season, including a national championship for the Columbus State baseball team and a national championship finals appearance by the Armstrong Atlantic State women's tennis team. The seven charter members of the conference were Armstrong Atlantic State University, Columbus State University, Francis Marion University, Georgia College & State University, Lander University, USC Aiken and USC Spartanburg. The name Peach Belt Athletic Conference was adopted in January of 1990 and modified to Peach Belt Conference in May of Augusta State joined the conference in 1991 and UNC Pembroke became the ninth member on July 1, They were followed by Kennesaw State University on July 1, 1994, Clayton College & State University on July 1, 1995 and the University of North Florida on July 1, 1997, to bring the current membership to 12 institutions. Former Augusta State basketball coach and athletic director Marvin Vanover was named the interim commissioner in April, 1990, and served in that capacity until his appointment as the conference's first full-time commissioner in July of He established the conference office in Augusta, Ga., which houses the commissioner and his staff. Dr. Allen C. Meadors, chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, is the president of the Peach Belt in The conference currently holds championships in 12 sports, six for men and six for women. They are men's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer, volleyball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's tennis, baseball, softball and men's golf. 51 This Is Savannah Historic Savannah, Georgia, is located on the Atlantic Coast, at the confluence of the Savannah River and the Atlantic Ocean. Throughout its history, there has been one adjective consistently used to describe Savannah: beautiful. The reason? There s something about the unique beauty of Savannah that cannot be forgotten. Streets with canopies of mossladen trees are honored venues for scores of historic homes. The town squares that Savannah s founding father, James Oglethorpe, laid out as public meeting places are now treasured pocket parks located throughout the downtown area. A renovated waterfront area serves as the hub for shopping and entertainment. Nearby sandy beaches draw streams of visitors with persistent cool breezes and the endless lure of the rolling sea. Finally, there s an indescribable - but readily discernible - feeling in the air that pervades Savannah, a kind of laid back approach to the world, a rootedness that makes living or working in Savannah an experience second to none. By way of affirmation, Le Monde, the leading French newspaper, called Savannah the most beautiful city in North America. Savannah has recently captured the imagination of a nation through its history and its appearance in several feature films, including Glory, Forrest Gump, Something to Talk About, Midnight In The Garden of Good and Evil and the 2000 hit film The Legend of Bagger Vance starring Will Smith and Matt Damon. Also, Savannah hosted the yachting events of the 1996 Summer Olympics. As a result, tourism has become one of the leading industries in the area. Savannah hosts over six million tourists each year. Tourism impacts the Savannah area by over $634 million. The city boasts over 7,000 rooms and more than 100 restaurants as folks have learned that Savannah is more than just a convenient rest stop on the interstate to Florida. The climate of Savannah features warm, and sometimes hot, weather for most of the year. There are seven months in which the average temperature is 70 degrees or higher. The lowest average high is in January at 60.3 degrees. The population in Savannah is roughly 130,000 and Chatham County is the fifth most populous county in the state of Georgia. Savannah also sits centrally located to some of the southeast s finest beaches. Tybee Island, located less than 30 minutes from Armstrong Atlantic State s campus, offers six miles of unspoiled sands, tempting seafood and gracious accommodations. Resort areas such as Hilton Head, South Carolina, are less than one hour away and provide even more relaxing getaway options. Whether it s the lure of historical settings, the friendliness of a southern community or the beautiful climate of southeast Georgia, Savannah is the place for you. 48 The Armstrong Atlantic State women s basketball team enjoys a walk on the beach at Tybee Island. Just minutes away from downtown Savannah, Tybee Island is a popular attraction for Savannah natives and tourists alike, adding to the six million visitors that experience the Coastal Empire area each year. AASU is picked to finish sixth in the PBC this season
