5 Outlook Pirates Looking For Best Of As head coach Griff Mills embarks on his 10th season at the helm of the Pirate men s basketball program, the pieces are in place to make the this season the Best of the Decade for Armstrong Atlantic State University. Last season, the Pirates entered an early January home game against defending Peach Belt champion Lander University with a 4-9 record and riding a five-game losing streak. After an emotional win over the Senators, the Pirates went on to win 12 of their last 16 games of the season and advance to the Peach Belt Conference Tournament championship game. For coach Mills and the Pirates, all five starters from last season s squad - and 10 players total - return for the campaign with an eye on unfinished business. AASU aims to take the momentum built late last season and ride into the NCAA Championships. The ride begins with the Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year, Robert Campbell (6-2, Sr., Hinesville, Ga.). Campbell became the Pirates first conference player of the year by leading the team in scoring (15.0 ppg) and leading the team and conference in assists (167) and steals (92). The Bradwell Institute product also earned All-Region honors from Daktronics and the NABC and was tabbed as a fourth-team All-America by the DII Bulletin, the first All-America honors for an Armstrong Atlantic State basketball player since Tommy Blackshear earned All- America honors from the NABC in Campbell, forced to move from the twoguard position to point guard in the middle of last season Senior Robert Campbell has been named preseason All- America by DII Bulletin, Preview Sports Magazine and Street & Smith s. because of injuries, will be counted on to provide leadership at both guard positions in his senior season. One of only 11 players to score over 1,000 points for the Pirates, Campbell is on pace to break school records for games played and steals and with another season like last, become the third leading scorer all-time at AASU. The other fourth-year senior on the squad for the Pirates this year is Tavares Brown (6-3, Savannah, Ga.). The Pirates starting small forward heading into last season, Brown took over the two-guard position and manned it capably, earning All-Peach Belt Tournament honors while averaging 8.6 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. This season Brown should be another staple in the starting lineup, at guard and small forward, and the Jenkins High School product also has a chance to break into the AASU record books in games played and rebounds with another fine season. The Pirates led the conference in three-point percentage and ranked 31st in the NCAA in shooting from beyond the arc, mostly through the efforts of David Koncul (6-5, Jr., Savannah, Ga.) and Mick Jordan (5-9, Jr., Sarasota, Fla.). Koncul became the starting small forward for the Pirates last season, averaging 12.3 points per game, and responded with one of the finest three-point shooting seasons ever for a Pirate, Junior David Koncul has connected on 43.3 percent of his career threepoint attempts, fourth best in school history. knocking down 71 of 156 treys (45.6 percent) to rank third in the conference and 26th in NCAA Division II. In just two seasons with the Pirates, Koncul already ranks fifth all-time in three-point shots made. Jordan, the primary backup to Campbell at point guard, also saw time at shooting guard and hit 53 of 127 three-pointers, good for fifth in the conference. The frontcourt for the Pirates boasts two returning starters in power forward Greg Favors (6-5, Sr., Pearson, Ga.) and center Cyrille Mainnemarre (6-10, Sr., Aix-en- Provence, France). Favors led the Pirates in rebounding with 8.7 per game after joining the squad as a junior college transfer from Otero Junior College and ranked in the top 10 in the conference in rebounding and field goal percentage. Mainnemarre, also a transfer, struggled during the first half of the season but hit his stride in conference season, averaging 13.8 points during league games and finishing the season leading the Peach Belt in field goal percentage, hitting 62 percent of his shots.

6 The Decade For Coach Mills Depth in the frontcourt will be in the capable hands of forwards Bart Westgeest (6-9, Jr., Wassenaar, The Netherlands) Gabriel Bata (6-4, Soph., Paris, France) and Conrad Hill (6-5, Soph., Roswell, Ga.). Westgeest averaged 2.5 points and 2.4 rebounds a game after transferring to AASU from Wichita State while Hill played in 18 games as a freshman. Bata joined the team in January and saw action in 12 contests. All three will provide quality minutes in relief of Favors and Mainnemarre. The backcourt welcomes back three more returnees in point guard Joel Lecoeuvre (5-11, Soph., Suwanee, Ga.), shooting guard Brian Hobbs (6-1,Soph., Loganville, Ga.) and redshirt Paul Reeves (6-1, Fr., Savannah, Ga.). Lecoeuvre was handed the starting point guard job in the fifth game of the season at Savannah State, but sustained a season-ending knee injury. Lecoeuvre is back to provide depth at the point guard position. Hobbs gives the Pirates another long-range shooting threat off of the bench and Reeves, who played at nearby Windsor Forest HS, can play both guard spots. Three newcomers join the Pirates for the season, led by guard Donta Humphries (5-10, Jr., Statesboro, Ga.), a twoyear starter for Georgia Southern University who transfers to the Pirates after ranking third in the Southern Conference in assists and seventh in steals. The Statesboro High School standout was the Eagles starting point guard for both of his years at GSU and will immediately compete for a starting spot in the Pirates backcourt. Guard Justin Wood Junior Donta Humphries averaged 6.8 ppg, 2.1 rpg and 5.1 apg as a sophomore, helping Georgia Southern to a overall record. (6-0, Fr., Midland, Mich.), a walk-on from Midland HS, and Sam Bruni (6-0, Soph., Woodstock, Ga.), a transfer from Green Mountain College in Vermont, round out the Pirate newcomers. AASU will have an early opportunity to measure itself with the best competition in the land in as the Pirates travel to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., for the Disney Division II Men s Basketball Tipoff Classic on Nov at the Walt Disney Wide World of Sports Outlook Complex. The tournament features eight of the elite men s basketball programs in the nation and the Pirates will face Bentley College in their opener on Fri., Nov. 10 at 1:00 p.m. Following the Tipoff Classic, AASU has home-andhome series with rivals Valdosta State and Savannah State scheduled for this season, as well as games against regionally-ranked teams from the SAC as both Wingate and Presbyterian come calling at Alumni Arena. Non-conference games with Clark Atlanta and Lenoir-Rhyne also dot the schedule and the Pirates will open their home schedule on Sat., Nov. 18 at 4:00 p.m. against Claflin. For the first time in school history, the Pirates have been picked by the Peach Belt coaches to capture the conference title. AASU garnered 10 of 12 first-place votes and 120 points in the annual preseason poll of the league s head men. With his 13th win this season, head coach Griff Mills will pass Bill Alexander and become the Pirates all-time winningest men s basketball coach. The pieces are in place for coach Mills to get those wins and many more as the Pirates seek to return to the NCAA Championships. First-place votes in parenthesis. As voted on by the PBC Men s Coaches; Coaches could not vote for own team. 7 Head Coach Griff Mills Griff Mills Head Men s Basketball Coach Head coach Griff Mills enters his 10th season at the helm of the Armstrong Atlantic State men s basketball program, on the verge of becoming the school s winningest coach and longest-tenured tactician in A lot has changed, both with the Pirate program and at the school since Mills, a fresh-faced assistant straight out of graduate school, was named the interim head coach in the middle of a tumultuous season, but the Griff Mills style and coaching philosophy has not - work hard, play hard and you will be successful, both on the court and off. Mills and the Pirates have continued to make inroads not only in the Peach Belt Conference but in the Savannah community. The AASU men s basketball team is synonymous in the low country with dedication, to the school, the community and to the team. Whether it be volunteer efforts with the Special Olympics and the Reading Pirates program or opportunities for youngsters to learn about the game of basketball through the Junior Pirate Basketball League or the Griff Mills Summer Basketball Camps, people know the positives that AASU basketball and coach Mills have brought to the Savannah area. This year, the Pirates have the opportunity to have a very successful year as Mills returns all five starters from last season s squad, including preseason All-America and Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year Robert Campbell, that went and advanced to the Peach Belt Conference tournament championship game - the second such trip for the Pirates in the last three seasons. When Mills was named the Pirates head coach during the season, he was the youngest head coach in the NCAA regardless of division. Coming to AASU from East Carolina University, where he served as an assistant under his former college coach, Mike Steele, Mills has since posted a mark (.551) in nine seasons, the second-best coaching numbers in Pirate history. With 13 wins this season, he will pass Bill Alexander as the all-time winningest coach in Pirate history and his 10th season will match Alexander for the most seasons coached at AASU. A native of Terre Haute, Ind., Mills played collegiately at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind., leading the Tigers to three NCAA Division III National Championship appearances and an record in four seasons. Mills earned his Bachelor s degree in economics from Depauw in 1988 and his Master s degree in physical education from East Carolina in Coach Mills is active in Immanuel Baptist Church with his wife, the former Tybe Moore, and three daughters, Maddie (age 7), Gracie (age 5) and Olivia (age 2). Whether its coaching his team or children at a basketball camp, or as a husband and father, he stands tall. Larry Williams Pastor, Immanuel Baptist Church I have known Coach Mills for many years now. Coach Mills is an outstanding tactician. However, his greatest strength is his ability to motivate and inspire a group of individuals to come together for a common goal. He has a unique passion for the game equal only to his passion for people. As a player, you can always feel that. One thing is for sure. When you play for Coach Mills, you get an outstanding and passionate coach for four years, but more importantly, you get a friend for life! Heath Schroyer Assistant Basketball Coach, BYU Coach Mills has been a pillar of strength for more than a decade. He coaches and lives his life by example: 1. Spirituality 2. Family 3. Academics 4. Athletics 5. Community = Success. Your best friend, Stan. Stanley J. Simpson III The best thing Griff Mills has done is to turn AASU back into a local program, with local players and growing local interest. That takes time and effort and Griff has put in both. 9 The Griff Mills Decade : Assistant coach Griff Mills becomes head coach in the middle of a season, and at age 26 is the youngest head coach in the NCAA, regardless of division : Head coach Griff Mills records his 100th career coaching victory in AASU s win over Clayton State on Feb. 17, 1998, the Pirates final game of the regular season. In his 10th year at the helm of the Pirates, head coach Griff Mills has instilled a sense of community, integrity and values that has become synonymous with Armstrong Atlantic State men s basketball. As Mills has built this program to the height of regional prominence and has them on the verge of realizing national prominence, so, too, has the coach changed from the second assistant coach in the middle of the season to one of the most respected coaches in the nation. This page serves as a tribute to the decade that Griff Mills has been involved with Armstrong Atlantic State and the Savannah community. 44 The Dearing Cup With a history as long as the existence of basketball at Armstrong, the Dearing Cup has become a symbol among the Pirate faithful for dedication, preparation and execution on the basketball court. Named for longtime Savannah and Armstrong Atlantic State basketball supporter Ashley Dearing, the Dearing Cup is awarded to the AASU player with the best free throw percentage each season. Below are listed the winners of the Dearing Cup - an award that has been given each of the past 46 years. Last year, sophomore David Koncul hit 61 of his 74 free throw attempts for a team-best.824 percentage to capture the Dearing Cup. Koncul even hit 14 of 14 in one contest, AASU s win at North Florida, one of Division II s best single-game free-throw performances last season. 52 This Is Savannah Historic Savannah, Georgia, is located on the Atlantic Coast, at the confluence of the Savannah River and the Atlantic Ocean. Throughout its history, there has been one adjective consistently used to describe Savannah: beautiful. The reason? There s something about the unique beauty of Savannah that cannot be forgotten. Streets with canopies of mossladen trees are honored venues for scores of historic homes. The town squares that Savannah s founding father, James Oglethorpe, laid out as public meeting places are now treasured pocket parks located throughout the downtown area. A renovated waterfront area serves as the hub for shopping and entertainment. Nearby sandy beaches draw streams of visitors with persistent cool breezes and the endless lure of the rolling sea. Finally, there s an indescribable - but readily discernible - feeling in the air that pervades Savannah, a kind of laid back approach to the world, a rootedness that makes living or working in Savannah an experience second to none. By way of affirmation, Le Monde, the leading French newspaper, called Savannah the most beautiful city in North America. Savannah has recently captured the imagination of a nation through its history and its appearance in several feature films, including Glory, Forrest Gump, Something to Talk About, Midnight In The Garden of Good and Evil and the upcoming fall film The Legend of Bagger Vance starring Will Smith and Matt Damon. Also, Savannah hosted the yachting events of the 1996 Summer Olympics. As a result, tourism has become one of the leading industries in the area. Savannah hosts over six million tourists each year. Tourism impacts the Savannah area by over $634 million. The city boasts over 7,000 rooms and more than 100 restaurants as folks have learned that Savannah is more than just a convenient rest stop on the interstate to Florida. The climate of Savannah features warm, and sometimes hot, weather for most of the year. There are seven months in which the average temperature is 70 degrees or higher. The lowest average high is in January at 60.3 degrees. The population in Savannah is roughly 130,000 and Chatham County is the fifth most populous county in the state of Georgia. Savannah also sits centrally located to some of the southeast s finest beaches. Tybee Island, located less than 30 minutes from Armstrong Atlantic State s campus, offers six miles of unspoiled sands, tempting seafood and gracious accommodations. Resort areas such as Hilton Head, South Carolina, are less than one hour away and provide even more relaxing getaway options. Whether it s the lure of historical settings, the friendliness of a southern community or the beautiful climate of southeast Georgia, Savannah is the place for you. 56
