5 Savannah and Tybee Island Historic Savannah, Georgia, is located on the Atlantic Coast, at the confluence of the Savannah River and the Atlantic Ocean. Throughout its history, there has been one adjective consistently used to describe Savannah: beautiful. The reason? There s something about the unique beauty of Savannah that cannot be forgotten. Streets with canopies of moss-laden trees are honored venues for scores of historic homes. The town squares that Savannah s founding father, James Oglethorpe, laid out as public meeting places are now treasured pocket parks located throughout the downtown area. A renovated waterfront area serves as the hub for shopping and entertainment. Nearby sandy beaches draw streams of visitors with persistent cool breezes and the endless lure of the rolling sea. Finally, there s an indescribable - but readily discernible - feeling in the air that pervades Savannah, a kind of laid back approach to the world, a rootedness that makes living or working in Savannah an experience second to none. By way of affirmation, Le Monde, the leading French newspaper, called Savannah the most beautiful city in North America. Savannah has recently captured the imagination of a nation through its history and its appearance in several feature films, including Glory, Forrest Gump, Something to Talk About, Midnight In The Garden of Good and Evil and the 2000 hit film The Legend of Bagger Vance starring Will Smith and Matt Damon. Also, Savannah hosted the yachting events of the 1996 Summer Olympics. As a result, tourism has become one of the leading industries in the area. Savannah hosts over six million tourists each year. Tourism impacts the Savannah area by over $634 million. The city boasts over 7,000 rooms and more than 100 restaurants as folks have learned that Savannah is more than just a convenient rest stop on the interstate to Florida. The climate of Savannah features warm, and sometimes hot, weather for most of the year. There are seven months in which the average temperature is 70 degrees or higher. The lowest average high is in January at 60.3 degrees. The population in Savannah is roughly 130,000 and Chatham County is the fifth most populous county in the state of Georgia. Savannah also sits centrally located to some of the southeast s finest beaches. Tybee Island, located less than 30 minutes from Armstrong Atlantic State s campus, offers six miles of unspoiled sands, tempting seafood and gracious accommodations. Resort areas such as Hilton Head, South Carolina, are less than one hour away and provide even more relaxing getaway options. Whether it s the lure of historical settings, the friendliness of a southern community or the beautiful climate of southeast Georgia, Savannah is the place for you. 2 AASU made its second NCAA Championships appearance in 2002

In just five seasons, McDaniel has built a program that captured its first Peach Belt Conference championship, earned two NCAA Regional berths and achieved a No. 1 ranking in the NFCA Coaches Top 25 poll during the 2000 season. Last season, McDaniel coached two NFCA Division II All- Americans - pitcher Annie Sells and outfielder Stacey Richardson - and led the Pirates to the No. 2 seed in the NCAA DII South Atlantic Region and a final No. 16 national ranking. The Pirates 40-7 record was the best won-lost record in the nation last season and Richardson was the NCAA s DII home run champion, the first NCAA statistical champion for the Pirates in the five-year history of the program. McDaniel joined the AASU coaching ranks from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where he served for three seasons as assistant coach to Ralph Weekly, the Mocs head coach and an U.S. Olympic Assistant Coach. 11 2003 Season Preview The Armstrong Atlantic State softball squad begins the 2003 season again as one of the top teams in the Peach Belt Conference, if not the nation, as they return seven players from last season s squad that went 40-7 overall - the best winning percentage in NCAA Division II - and finished second in the PBC. Gone is two-time NFCA Division II All-America Annie Sells, whose presence in the circle and at the plate will be sorely missed by head coach Marty McDaniel and the Pirates, but the cupboard is anything but bare as AASU returns the NCAA s Division II home run champion in junior Stacey Richardson. Richardson led the Pirates in home runs with 16 and in RBIs with 56 in 2002, both school records, and will be the focus of a retooled lineup that also features All-PBC and All- South Atlantic Region second baseman Stacy Oliver. Surrounding the two in the batting order will be freshman Abby Hodge, an Australian infielder who brings a keen batting eye and good speed to the top of the lineup, and junior catcher Kissy Stepanova, a two-time All-WJCAC selection at Midland College in Texas who will provide protection for Richardson in the cleanup spot of the order. Two more newcomers will be key parts o f the Pirate offense and defense in junior third baseman Jenny Alfirov and junior outfielder Carrie Thompson, two Georgia natives who transfer to AASU from in-state schools. Alfirov earned All-Region honors at Coastal Georgia Community College in 2002 and Thompson finds a home in Savannah after previously playing at Andrew College and at Thomas University. Junior Lindsay Phillips, who manned shortstop for the Pirates last season after transferring from the University of Georgia, will make the Junior OF Lindsay Phillips move to center field this season, while right field will be manned by improving sophomore Jocelyn Lavender. Sophomore Amanda Kort returns as the Pirates starting first baseman, while sophomore Alison Bell will provide outfield depth. AASU will be without the services of talented freshman outfielder Michelle Davis this season after the Tennessee native suffered a preseason injury. Handed the difficult task of replacing Sells in the circle, junior Katya Eronina nevertheless has the pedigree to live up to the billing. The WJCAC s MVP in 2002 while pitching for Midland College in Texas, Eronina was a member o fthe Russian Junior National team and brings plenty of big-game experience to the Pirates in Joining Eronina on the Pirates staff in 2002 is returning senior Delaney Warrian. The Aussie was undefeated last season, going 7-0 with an 0.88 ERA and will be counted on to be the Pirates second starter in The Lady Pirates have been picked to finish third in the Peach Belt Conference in a preseason poll of conference coaches for the second straight year, and AASU enters the season with a preseason rank of No. 16 in the NFCA s Division II Top 25. The schedule contains several strong non-conference opponents as the Pirates will visit No. 2-ranked Barry, No. 10- ranked Kennesaw State, Francis Marion and Ft. Myers, Fla., for tournament action, as well as the always competitive PBC schedule. AASU will play eight games against teams ranked in the Top 25 Preseason Poll with an eye on a second straight trip to the NCAA Division II National Championships well within reach. 8 Youthful Pirates Enter 2003 With Confidence 2003 Peach Belt Preseason Softball Poll As voted on by the PBC Softball Coaches; Coaches could not vote for own team Pl Team(1st) Points 1. 20 2002 AASU Season Review The 2002 AASU softball squad compiled a 40-7 record and returned to the NCAA Championships for the second time in the program s brief fiveyear history, advancing to the 2002 South Atlantic Regional semifinals. Led by two-time NFCA Division II All-America pitcher Annie Sells and NFCA DII All-America left fielder Stacey Richardson, the Pirates began the year 17-1 and ascended to No. 2 in the nation. AASU finished second in the Peach Belt Conference and was runner-up in the 2002 Peach Belt Conference Tournament, winning two games on the final day to reach the championship game. AASU made its second trip to the NCAA regionals and won the first game there, a 2-1 extra-inning win over Lenoir-Rhyne in which Annie Sells led off the ninth inning with a solo home run to give the Pirates the victory. Even though the Pirates dropped their next two games by one run, the season was a success as AASU led the nation in winning percentage and knocked off several ranked teams during the year, including Coker, Kennesaw State, Alabama-Huntsville and USC Spartanburg. Sells put together a fantastic season to close out her stellar four-year Annie Sells career at AASU. Twice she earned NFCA Division II Player of the Week honors in 2002 and was named the PBC Player of the Year for the second time in her career. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native finished her career holding 12 PBC pitching records including most victories, strikeouts, shutout and no-hitters, and ranks 18th all-time in NCAA DII history in home runs with 41, 11th all-time in strikeouts per seven innings at 8.8, 11th all-time in shutouts with 17 and 26th all-time in wins with 86. Richardson led a trio of transfers from the University of Georgia who infused instant offense into the Pirate attack. The sophomore set school records in home runs (16) - leading the nation with 0.34 per game - and RBI (56) in 2002 and, along with shortstop Lindsay Phillips and All-PBC Tournament catcher Diana Corwin, helped the Pirates finish the year ranked No. 16 in the nation. Along with Sells, the Pirates said goodbye to five other seniors in Senior third baseman Brea Smith played four years for the Pirates at the hot corner and batted.310 in her career, earning All-PBC Tournament honors in 2001 and collecting 152 career hits. Senior Breon Michel and Sara Noe each transferred to AASU as juniors from Indian Hills CC in 2001 and patrolled the outfield for two seasons. Noe, the Pirates leadoff hitter the last two seasons, hit.301 and scored 63 runs in two seasons, stealing 13 bases. Michel, an All-PBC and All-South Atlantic Region honoree in 2001, hit.298 in two seasons for AASU. Senior catcher Kelli McNary, who played in 64 games in two seasons for AASU behind the plate, and senior infielder Lexie Martin, who played parts of two seasons for AASU after her basketball participation, also played their final games at AASU in The 2002 season gives the Pirates great hope for the future as seven players return in 2003 with only one being a senior - pitcher Delaney Warrian. Again the Pirates will be a force in the Peach Belt Conference and have their eyes on a return to the NCAA Championships and a possible College World Series berth. Sara Noe AASU said goodbye to six seniors in 2002, including PBC POTY Annie Sells 17
