5 Savannah and Tybee Island Historic Savannah, Georgia, is located on the Atlantic Coast, at the confluence of the Savannah River and the Atlantic Ocean. Throughout its history, there has been one adjective consistently used to describe Savannah: beautiful. The reason? There s something about the unique beauty of Savannah that cannot be forgotten. Streets with canopies of moss-laden trees are honored venues for scores of historic homes. The town squares that Savannah s founding father, James Oglethorpe, laid out as public meeting places are now treasured pocket parks located throughout the downtown area. A renovated waterfront area serves as the hub for shopping and entertainment. Nearby sandy beaches draw streams of visitors with persistent cool breezes and the endless lure of the rolling sea. Finally, there s an indescribable - but readily discernible - feeling in the air that pervades Savannah, a kind of laid back approach to the world, a rootedness that makes living or working in Savannah an experience second to none. By way of affirmation, Le Monde, the leading French newspaper, called Savannah the most beautiful city in North America. Savannah has recently captured the imagination of a nation through its history and its appearance in several feature films, including Glory, Forrest Gump, Something to Talk About, Midnight In The Garden of Good and Evil and the 2000 hit film The Legend of Bagger Vance starring Will Smith and Matt Damon. Also, Savannah hosted the yachting events of the 1996 Summer Olympics. As a result, tourism has become one of the leading industries in the area. Savannah hosts over six million tourists each year. Tourism impacts the Savannah area by over $634 million. The city boasts over 7,000 rooms and more than 100 restaurants as folks have learned that Savannah is more than just a convenient rest stop on the interstate to Florida. The climate of Savannah features warm, and sometimes hot, weather for most of the year. There are seven months in which the average temperature is 70 degrees or higher. The lowest average high is in January at 60.3 degrees. The population in Savannah is roughly 130,000 and Chatham County is the fifth most populous county in the state of Georgia. Savannah also sits centrally located to some of the southeast s finest beaches. Tybee Island, located less than 30 minutes from Armstrong Atlantic State s campus, offers six miles of unspoiled sands, tempting seafood and gracious accommodations. Resort areas such as Hilton Head, South Carolina, are less than one hour away and provide even more relaxing getaway options. Whether it s the lure of historical settings, the friendliness of a southern community or the beautiful climate of southeast Georgia, Savannah is the place for you. 2 AASU made its third NCAA Championships appearance in 2003

Last season, the Pirates rode the pitching of first-team NFCA All- America Katya Eronina, the NCAA Division II leader in ERA, to the NCAA South Atlantic Region final. A season and a No. 16 final ranking for a team that loses just two players for 2004 and returns Eronina and two-time All-America Stacy Richardson sets up McDaniel and the Pirates for an oustanding In 2002, McDaniel coached two NFCA Division II All-Americans - pitcher Annie Sells and Richardson - and led the Pirates to the No. 2 seed in the NCAA DII South Atlantic Region and a final No. 16 national ranking. The Pirates 40-7 record was the best won-lost record in the nation last season and Richardson was the NCAA s DII home run champion with a school-record 16 home runs. McDaniel joined the AASU coaching ranks from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where he served for three seasons as assistant coach to Ralph Weekly, the Mocs head coach and an U.S. Olympic Assistant Coach. 11 2004 Season Preview For the second time in the Armstrong Atlantic State University softball program s six years of varsity competition, the Lady Pirates were one game away from advancing to the College World Series. With two NFCA Division II All-Americans returning, AASU is driving for - and expecting - more in Led by the outstanding pitching of NFCA First-Team All-America hurler Katya Eronina and the hitting of two-time NFCA Second-Team All-America designated player Stacey Richardson, the Pirates begin the 2004 season picked to finish third in the Peach Belt Conference and ranked No. 14 in the preseason DII Top 25 poll. Much like 2003, the Pirates success will rely first on pitching. Eronina led NCAA Division II with an 0.36 ERA and set school and Peach Belt Conference records with 326 strikeouts. The senior will unquestionably be one of the top pitchers in the country again in AASU welcomes back sophomore Katy Perkins, who missed all of the 2003 season, as the No. 2 starter. Perkins went 11-1 with a 1.43 ERA as a freshman in 2002 with four shutouts and pitched very well in the fall. Joining the duo will be true freshman Adrian Tuttle, a 5-11 righthander from Conneaut, Ohio. The offense will begin with Richardson, who has clubbed 28 home runs in two seasons and last year set a PBC record by drawing 43 walks. The senior will have a bit more protection in the lineup this year as opposing pitchers will have to contend with All-PBC catcher Kissy Stepanova and redshirt freshman outfielder Michelle Davis in the heart of the order. Stepanova hit.277 and played excellent defense behind the plate, gunning down 43% of potential basestealers, while Davis is healthy after suffering a preseason injury that forced her to miss the entire 2003 season. Senior 2B Stacy Oliver The top of the lineup will be handled by senior center fielder Valeria Silvestrini, a transfer from Argentina who played for the Italian National softball team in The 5-1 sparkplug can play almost any position and will be a definite basestealing threat. Behind her will be junior All-PBC second baseman Stacy Oliver, who hit.304 as a sophomore with a team-high 10 stolen bases and 13 sacrifice hits. Senior Lindsay Phillips returns to shortstop after spending 2003 in center field, while the rest of the infield will be manned by returning starters Amanda Kort (1B) and Jenny Alfirov (3B). Senior Carrie Thompson will join Silvestrini and Davis in the outfield after hitting.299 last season, third-best on the squad. AASU will have more depth in 2003 with a stocked bench, including senior outfielder Jocelyn Lavender and four talented freshmen - outfielders Chelce Culberson, Mandi Meador and Kristina Nelson, as well as catcher Amber Hunt. The 2004 schedule contains several strong non-conference opponents as the Pirates will visit North Florida, Kennesaw State and Francis Marion for tournament action, as well as hosting the 2004 Pirate Softball Invitational featuring Tusculum and West Georgia. AASU will also host a weekend crossover with region foes Anderson and Lenoir-Rhyne. AASU will play nine games against teams ranked in the Top 25 Preseason Poll with an eye on not only a third straight trip to the NCAA Division II National Championships, but a first-ever trip to the College World Series in nearby Orlando, Fla. 8 AASU Ready For More In Peach Belt Preseason Softball Poll As voted on by the PBC Softball Coaches; Coaches could not vote for own team Pl Team(1st) Points 1. 22 2003 AASU Season Review The AASU softball squad completed another successful season in 2003, competing in its third NCAA Championships and advancing to its second South Atlantic Region championship game. AASU finished the year with a overall record and a No. 16 final ranking. The success of the 2003 Pirates began with a pair of newcomers who made an immediate impact on the program. Junior pitcher Katya Eronina and junior catcher Kissy Stepanova formed the Russian Battery in 2003 and both took the league by storm. Eronina went 23-6 with an 0.36 ERA, the best earned-run average in NCAA Division II, earning NFCA Division II First-Team All-America honors. She was an NFCA DII Player of the Week during her scoreless-inning streak of 65.1 shutout innings, the third longest streak in NCAA Division II history. Stepanova hit.277 and earned All-Peach Belt Conference honors, proving deadly to opposing runners as she threw out 43% of potential basestealers during the season. NFCA All-America honoree Stacey Richardson returned for her second season as a Pirate and again terrorized opposing pitching, hitting.312 with 12 home runs and 35 RBI, all team highs. Opponents walked Delaney Warrian Richardson 42 times durimg the season, a new school and Peach Belt Conference record, showing immense respect for the Pirates clean-up hitter. Richardson has now cranked 28 home runs in her two seasons. The Pirates began the season with a 25-3 record, which included wins over No. 2 Barry (2-1 on March 1), No. 25 Coker (8-0 on March 8) and No. 14 Alabama-Huntsville (5-0 on March 21). Despite a 12-6 mark in the Peach Belt Conference, the Pirates strong region and national schedule helped them secure their third NCAA Championships berth. At the 2003 NCAA South Atlantic Regional, the Pirates dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 decision to Longwood to move into the loser s bracket, but AASU battled through, winning three straight games to reach the championship game against No. 12 GC&SU. Along the way, the Pirates knocked off No. 22 Columbus State 2-0 and host and No. 2-ranked North Florida, 2-0, to reach the Bobcats. In an outstanding display of pitching, senior Delaney Warrian and GC&SU s Jennifer Joiner matched zeroes through 12 innings, until the Bobcats finally broke through with a run in the 13th inning, the longest game ever played by Armstrong Atlantic State. The game capped off a fine season by the senior Warrian, who went 15-8 with a 1.82 ERA in 24 games for the Pirates. Warrian, who graduated in May as the physical education department s top student, also earned CoSIDA Academic All-District III honors and was named to the All-South Atlantic Region Tournament squad. Other strong performances in 2003 came from junior outfielder Carrie Thompson, who hit.299 in her first season at AASU, as well as freshman shortstop Abby Hodge, who played excellent defense and drew 33 walks on the season. With only Warrian and Hodge missing from the 2003 squad, the 2004 campaign looks to be one of the strongest in history for AASU Softball. Stacey Richardson The Pirates lose just two players from last season s squad 19
