Villanova posted 106 points on the Hawks to open the campaign, and Va Tech (91), Albany (85), Vanderbilt (95), Rutgers (81), North Carolina (102), Wagner (89), St. Francis (81), LIU Brooklyn (106) and Robert Morris (81 in OT) each passed the 80-point mark. CAROLINA ON MY MIND Three members of Monmouth s coaching staff played for the University of North Carolina under the legendary Dean Smith. In King Rice s four years with the Tar Heels ( to 91-92), the squad went with four NCAA Sweet 16 appearances and a Final Four showing. Assistant coaches and Tar Heel classmates Brian Reese and Derrick Phelps, went a combined ( to 93-94), while winning the 1993 NCAA Championship. And yes, that was Phelps trapping Michigan s Chris Webber during the infamous timeout call in the 1993 Championship Game. MONMOUTH FIRST-YEAR HEAD COACHES King Rice became the fi fth head coach at MU upon his hiring in March. In their fi rst seasons at MU Bill Boylan ( ) went 8-4, Ron Kornegay ( ) went 8-17, Wayne Szoke ( ) went 16-13, and Dave Calloway ( ) went 5-21 overall. KHALIL BROWN DEEMED INELIGIBLE BY NCAA Monmouth freshman forward Khalil Brown had his waiver denied by the NCAA and is considered ineligible to start the season due to the delayed enrollment legislation from August The legislation states that a student-athlete must be enrolled in a school within 12 months of their high school graduation. In the fall of 2010, while at Westwind Academy, Brown and the school principal called the NCAA Eligibility Center and asked about his eligibility for the fall of 2011 and they were told he would be fi ne. After his recruitment by other Division I institutions started, Brown was informed by the NCAA in May of his status. CENTURY MARK In the season-opening loss to Villanova (11/11/11), the Hawks surrendered 100+ points for the fi rst time since a loss to Seton Hall on December 2, LIU Brooklyn (1/14/12) equalled the 106 total over the weekend. The 106 points allowed is the highest total allowed since giving up 108 points to Long Island (2/26/98) in the NEC Quarterfi nals. The program-record for points allowed is 112, to the same LIU team in 1998, in the regular season fi nale. TOUGH START Monmouth has opened a season 0-8 for the fi rst time since the beginning of the campaign when the Hawks started 0-19, and had the nation s longest losing streak at the time. HOLDING ON In its fi rst eight contests of the season, Monmouth led for a total of 8:05 of game action. The Hawks held leads on seven occassions in that stretch, including twice against Albany. MU led against Villanova, Albany, Brown and Vanderbilt. Monmouth increased that time total in the win at Navy (12/6), adding 17:59 of game action, including a stretch of 9:40 in the fi rst half. In the win, the Hawks held a fi ve-point lead, their largest cushion of the season, before holding on for the victory in Alumni Hall. The Hawks led wire-to-wire against Fordham (12/10), leading by as many as 23 points in the second half, and led by as many as 10 points at Rutgers (12/12). NEC OPENERS Monmouth is now all-time in Northeast Conference openers, dating back to the Hawks fi rst season in the league ( ), after its season-opening loss at Saint Francis on Thursday night. After winning fi ve straight NEC openers, the Hawks have now dropped six straight. Over that span, the Hawks are 6-6 when they open on the road. PENNSYLVANIA IS NOT A GOOD HOST Monmouth has not been victorious in both games of the Pa. swing since the campaign. ENDING A STREAK Monmouth s road win at Navy (12/6) broke a ten-game road losing streak for the Hawks. WARE S DEBUT Junior forward Marcus Ware made his season debut on 12/6 at Navy, after recovering from ACL surgery in the spring. The 2011 NEC All-Rookie Team selection played 12 minutes, adding two rebounds, an assist and a pivotal three-point play with 6:03 left. DISHING IT OUT Monmouth freshman Andrew Nicholas set a career-high, and a then team season-best with his six assists at Navy (12/6). Nicholas, who has made 12 starts, ranks fourth on the team in scoring after 28 games. Monmouth will continue to appeal the NCAA s decision. HAWKS RECEIVE FOUR NLI s Guards Jalen Palm (Louisville, Ky./Butler Traditional H.S.) [5-10, guard] and Christian White (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas H.S.) [5-10, guard], and forwards Tyrone O Garro (Jersey City, N.J./St. Peter s Prep) [6-5, forward] and Collin Stewart (Scotia, N.Y./Schenectady Christian School) [6-7, forward] have all signed National Letters of Intent to play basketball at Monmouth in , head coach King Rice announced. YOU THOUGHT 9 WAS A MISTAKE?? Monmouth head coach King Rice stated, I m sorry fans that I was the crazy young coach that scheduled nine straight road games to start the season. We will never do that again. But that s not the longest road streak to open the season in the country this year. Monmouth is tied for the second-longest (9, with fellow NEC member St. Francis [N.Y.]), but the longest road swing to open the year title belongs to both Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Mississippi Valley State, which each open with 15 road games. Both of those programs do not have a home game until January 14.

7 MILEAGE CHART AWAY FROM HOME Before having a home game this season, the Hawks opened with nine straight road games, and have traveled a total of 4,652 miles before hosting a game in the MAC. DIVISION I HOME OPENERS Since turning Division I in men s basketball, the Hawks program is now all-time in home openers after its win over Fordham. Monmouth is 2-1 in home openers in the MAC after defeating FIU in 2009, but falling to Stony Brook in SPREADING THE WEALTH Monmouth had fi ve players score in double-fi gures against Fordham (12/10) for the fi rst time since fi ve Hawks did so in an overtime win at Bryant on January 22, Monmouth equalled that feat in its road loss at Wagner on February ASSISTS Monmouth s 20 assists in the victory over Fordham (on 31 fi eld goals) was the program s fi rst 20+ assist game in nearly two years. The Hawks dished out 21 assists in an victory over Penn on Dec. 12, The Hawks have surrendered 100+ points three this season to Villanova, North Carolina and LIU Brooklyn. Monmouth has allowed teams to hit the century mark at least twice in a season two other times in its Division I history: and Entering , the Hawks had allowed 100+ points to an opponent as a DI school just seven times. STEELE NAMED CHOICE HOTELS/NEC PLAYER OF THE WEEK ON DEC. 12 Junior guard Jesse Steele, who averaged 19.0 points per game and led the Hawks to their fi rst two victories of the season, earned the league s Choice Hotels/NEC Player of the Week honor on Monday, December 12. Steele, who led Monmouth in scoring in wins at Navy and against Fordham, accumulated 38 points, while connecting on 62.0% of his shots from the fl oor and 67.0% beyond the arc. At Navy, Steele recorded his fourth-career 20-point game, adding a game-high 20 points, while going 4-for-4 from the line in the fi nal 65 seconds to keep the Hawks in front and seal a victory, their fi rst of the season. In addition to that 4-for-4 mark from the free-throw line, Steele went 6-of-10 from the fi eld and buried 4-of-6 treys taken. Steele continued to pace MU against Fordham, adding a team-high 18 points while contributing six assists, fi ve boards and a steal in a 15-point win over the Rams, 80-65, in the Hawks home opener. STEELE-ING THE SHOW Jesse Steele set a new career-high, and a new team-high this season with his nine assists at North Carolina (1/1/12). Steele followed that up with an eight-assist night against Mount St. Mary s (1/5/12). Steele s nine dimes was the highest for the Monmouth program since James Hett had 10 assists in a double overtime win over Hartford (12/11/10) last year. The junior leads the Hawks with 112 assists and ranks eighth in the NEC with 4.00 apg. QUITE THE RETURN TO ACTION Freshman gunner Andrew Nicholas connected on 6-of-8 from beyond the arc for his second career 20-point game in the Hawks loss at No. 6 North Carolina (1/1/12). Nicholas hit three straight trifectas in the second half for the Hawks in his fi rst game back from suffering a concussion in practice before the Rider game. HAULING IT IN Junior Ed Waite has registered 28 career games in which he has hauled down at least seven rebounds, including eight career contests in which he notched a double-digit rebound total. The forward, who has now played in 89 career contests, has now posted three games this season in which he did not register a rebound. CATEGORY... MONMOUTH... 9 CAMPBELL IS COMING ON STRONG In his fi rst 14 games of his senior season, guard Will Campbell averaged 5.2 points per game, but exploded to average 13.3 points per game in a three-game stretch, including three-straight double-fi gure games. HELP DEFENSE The Hawks have been taught to run pressure man-to-man defense this season under the new coaching staff, as well as help side defense. To that end, Monmouth has drawn 66 charges so far this year, including fi ve each against Saint Francis (1/19/12) and Bryant (1/28). KEEPING THE LEAD Monmouth has led in a game by double-digits in eight contests this year, and are now 6-2 in those games. Monmouth led Fordham by 23 (W), Saint Francis by 19 (W), Mount St. Mary s by 15 (W), Bryant by 13 (W), FDU by 22 and 14 in two wins. The Hawks led at Rutgers by 10, but fell in the RAC, and lost a 15-point second-half lead to Robert Morris at home in overtime. D IS ON! Junior guard Dion Nesmith set the nets on fi re against Robert Morris, connecting on his fi rst eight fi eld goal attempts, while fi n- ishing with a career-best 22 points for the Hawks. Nesmith, who hit 6-of-7 from three-point range, fi nished the game 8-of-9 from the fi eld, in just 24 minutes of action. Nesmith joined Andrew Nicholas and Mike Myers Keitt as Hawks who hit six threepointers in a game this year. Nesmith, who is one of two players to start all 28 games (Jesse Steele) in his fi rst year with the Hawks, ranks second on the team in scoring with an 8.3 ppg average. He also ranks second on the team in steals, third in rebounds, and fourth in assists. Over his last nine outings, Nesmith has hit 17-of-31 from beyond the arc (.548) to move into the league-leaders for overall 3pt-FG percetage. TRIPPED UP BY THAT LINE In a game that was decided in overtime, the Hawks shot a season-low 42.9% from the free throw line in the loss to Robert Morris last Saturday night. The Hawks, who attempted no free throws in the extra time, went 2-for-5 from the line in the second half as the Colonials came back from 15 points down. MU went 6-fo-14 from the line, while RMU was 23-of-34. WINNING THAT BATTLE Monmouth s road win at CCSU on Thursday night, was the Hawks fi rst road victory in the league since winning at FDU on February 12 last season. Monmouth, which held CC 16 points under its season-average, also tied a team season-high with 11 threepointers. ROAD WARRIORS With its victories at CCSU and Bryant this past weekend, the Hawks posted their fi rst NEC weekend road sweep since January of just over six years. On that weekend, the Hawks defeated CCSU (1/12/06) and Quinnipiac (1/14/06) in double ot, en route to their fourth NEC Championship. That season, MU had to win a pair of road games in the NEC semis (at CCSU) and fi nals (at FDU) to capture the crown. QUITE THE COMEBACK - PART II In its home victory over Sacred Heart (2/2), Monmouth erased an eight-point defi cit in the fi nal 2:31 of the game to come away with a seven-point win. The Hawks, who outscored the Pioneers 17-2 over the fi nal 2:24, went 4-for-4 from the free throw line during that span. ONE AND DONE Monmouth went 3-1 against the teams it will face only once this season. With the NEC s unbalanced schedule, the Hawks defeated CCSU (in ot) and Bryant on the road, and Sacred Heart in the MAC, while falling to Quinnipiac at home. DIRTYING THE GLASS After being outrebounded by Quinnipiac, Monmouth has now been outrebounded by 20 or more fi ve times this season, resulting in one of the nation s worst rebounding margin of Monmouth is now averaging 31.2 rebounds per game after 28 contests. Only three times in the program s DI history have the Hawks averaged less than 30.0 rpg ( , and ). 3 STRAIGHT ON THE ROAD On February 8 at FDU, Monmouth won its third straight Northeast Conference road game for the fi rst time since opening the campaign with three straight road victories. That season Monmouth ended up 5-4 in road NEC games, but won the NEC Championship. Monmouth failed to earn its fourth straight NEC road win at Wagner (2/16), which would have been the fi rst time since the season, when the Hawks won their fi rst four road contests and fi nished the campaign 5-2 away from home in the league. HEAT STREAK In the win at FDU (2/8), Monmouth smoked the nets in the fi rst half, connecting for a season-best 49 points in the stanza, while connecting on 54.5% overall from the fi eld and 8-of-10 from beyond the arc. The 20-point advantage at the break was also MU s largest halftime lead of the season, besting its 13-point edge on Fordham. WIRE-TO-WIRE For just the third time this season, the Hawks led a game wire-towire when Monmouth defeated Fairleigh Dickinson in the MAC on Saturday night. Monmouth, which built a 20-point halftime lead against the Knights on the road in accomplishing the feat, also led Fordham from start to fi nish on December 10 - the Hawks home opener. UP NEXT... Monmouth returns to action on Thursday, February 23, when the Hawks host St. Francis in the MAC, at 7:00 p.m. RINGING IN 250 Monmouth s victory at Bryant on January 28 was the program s 250th overall win in Northeast Conference play since joining the league in Monmouth became the second institution this season to eclipse the 250-win mark, joining LIU Broolyn, while two other schools (Fairleigh Dickinson and Robert Morris) are the only other current NEC programs to reach that milestone.
