A true teacher both on and off the court, Perretta strives to have a positive influence on his student-athletes not only as basketball players, but also as people. In his 23-year career on the Main Line, Perretta has tallied a career record of His 400 wins rank him 29th on the winningest active collegiate coaching list. Perretta reached the 400-win milestone on Saturday, Dec. 2 with a win over visiting Temple. Last season, Perretta led an inexperienced and injury riddled team to a overall record and a berth in the WNIT where they lost to Michigan State in the first round. Perretta attended Lycoming College after earning All-Catholic League honors at Monsignor Bonner High School in Upper Darby, Pa. His playing career was cut short, however, by an ankle injury during his freshman year at Lycoming. Perretta spent the remainder of his college years assisting Lycoming s varsity and junior varsity programs as a coach, and he also aided the women s program. He received his bachelor s degree in social studies and a secondary teaching certificate in In 1995, he earned his Master s degree in Education from Villanova. HEAD COACH C. VIVIAN STRINGER C. Vivian Stringer, the master builder of basketball programs, completed her third showpiece last year by catapulting Rutgers into its first ever NCAA Final Four in The only coach in men s or women s basketball to take three different schools to the Final Four (Cheyney State in 1982 and Iowa in 1993), Stringer began her construction project at Rutgers in July of 1995 armed with little else than a vision. After two years of gathering materials and going over blueprints, Stringer saw her plans begin to come to together in 1998 when her team, filled with nine freshmen and sophomores, reached the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament. As if mapped out in the plans, the Knights continued their steady progression in 1999, making it to the Elite Eight before bowing out to the eventual national champion for the second straight season. The third all-time winningest coach in women s basketball, she has compiled a overall record, which makes her one of just three women s coaches to win 600 games. In her five-plus seasons at the Rutgers helm, she has complied a record. Prior to Iowa, she began her coaching career at Cheyney State where she coached several sports without pay. During her 11 seasons at Cheyney State, she compiled a record and advanced the small historically black institution (located 24 miles outside of Philadelphia) to the first ever NCAA Final Four. 3 STREAK ENDS: Villanova saw its seven-game losing streak end this past Tuesday with a loss to Seton Hall. The seven-game streak was Villanova s longest since a 12-game streak during the campaign. Earlier this year, the Wildcats had a five game winning streak that was ended with a loss at No. 3 Notre Dame. ON THE TUBE: Saturday s game with Rutgers will be featured as the Big East Conference Game of the Week. The game will be seen live on Fox SportsNet Florida and Madison Square Garden Network and on a tape delay basis on both Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia (4:30 p.m.) and Fox SportsNet New England (2 p.m.). Leah Secondo will handle play-by-play duties, while Vera Jones will serve as the color commentator. CENTER OF ATTENTION: Senior center Brandi Barnes has been a key component to the Wildcats. She currently leads the Wildcats in three categories including points (14.1 ppg), block shots (20) and field goal percentage (95-of-183 for 51.9 percent) and she is second on the squad in rebounds with a 5.9 rpg. average. She currently ranks fourth in the Big East in field goal percentage. In the last eight games, she has tallied 133 points for an average of 16.6 ppg. in that span and she has reached double figures in points in seven of the eight contests, including scoring 20 or more points three times. From the field in the last eight games, she is 54-of-97 for 55.6 percent. In addition, Barnes has grabbed 54 rebounds and blocked 15 shots in the eight-game stretch. Barnes has twice been named Big East Conference Player of the Week this season. SOPHOMORE SENSATIONAL: After earning Big East Conference All- Rookie Team distinction and Philadelphia Big Five Rookie of the Year honors last year as a freshman, sophomore guard Trish Juhline has picked up this season right where she left off a season ago. After 16 games, Juhline is currently second on the team in scoring with a 12.0 ppg. average and she leads both the team and the Big East in three-point field goals with 42 in 104 attempts for 40.4 percent. In her last three games from behind the arc, Juhline is 12-of-26 for 46.1 percent. In addition to averaging 12.0 ppg average, Juhline is also averaging 2.7 assists per game, 1.2 steals per game and 2.3 rebounds per contest in 30.3 minutes per game. Last season as a freshman, Juhline set a Villanova freshman record for minutes played by logging 970 minutes. ROOKIE EARNS RAVE REVIEWS: Freshman forward Courtney Mix has emerged as one of Villanova s top performers. After most games, you will usually find Mix stuffing the stat sheet. Entering the Rutgers game on Saturday, Jan. 20, Mix is averaging 6.5 ppg., a team-best 6.0 rpg., a teamhigh 1.7 spg, and 2.1 apg., in 23.9 minutes per contest. In her last outing versus Seton Hall, Mix tallied 11 points, seven rebounds, five steals, two assists and two blocks in 28 minutes of action. She currently leads the Big East in free throw percentage (44-of-51 for.863). Mix was named Big East Rookie of the Week on Jan. 1. NO MORE NON CONFERENCE: With the win over George Washington last Saturday, Villanova concluded its non conference portion of the schedule with a 9-2 record. The Wildcats non conference wins came against Fairfield, Florida International, Georgia State, LaSalle, Temple, Pennsylvania, Bucknell, Howard and George Washington with the two losses coming to Penn State and St. Joseph s. ON THE ROAD AGAIN: Villanova will play the last of four-straight home games on Saturday, Jan. 20 versus Rutgers. The four-game home stretch began on Wednesday, Jan. 10 with a win over Big East rival Georgetown and continued on Saturday, Jan. 13 with a win over George Washington and this past Tuesday with a loss to Seton Hall. The Wildcats will hit the road for two away contests next week when they travel to Virginia Tech on Tuesday, Jan. 23 and to Boston College on Saturday, Jan. 27. In fact, Villanova will play four of its next five on the road. STEALING THE SHOW: Villanova has been tallying a number of steals lately, as they have recorded a combined 22 in the last two games. Against George Washington last Saturday, the Wildcats were credited with a seasonhigh 13 steals, while they had nine steals versus Seton Hall this past Tuesday. For the year, Villanova has registered 114 steals for an average of 7.1 per game. Freshman Courtney Mix is the team s leader with 28. TEAM BASKETBALL: As is the case with all Harry Perretta coached teams, this year s Wildcat squad does a good job of playing team basketball. In the last two games, Villanova has had an assist on 33 of the 39 field goals they have made. For the season, Villanova has had an assist on 293 of its 377 field goals for 77.7 percent. FROM DOWNTOWN: Villanova continues to use the three-point shot to its advantage. After 16 games, the Wildcats are 120-of-346 (34.6 percent) from three-point land, while their opponents are just 36-of-153 for 23.5 percent. When you look at it in points, Villanova has outscored its opposition by 252 at The Wildcats are currently averaging 21.6 threepoint field goal attempts, while they are making an average of 7.5 triples per contest which ranks fifth in the latest NCAA statistics. 100 STRAIGHT: Entering the Rutgers game on Saturday, Jan. 20, Villanova has made at least one three-point field goal in 100-straight games. The last time the Cats failed to connect on a triple in a game came at Boston College on Jan 25, Twice during this 100 game span, Villanova has tied the NCAA record for three-point field goals made in a game with 18 (vs. Penn 12/20/97 and earlier this year versus WVU on 1/3/00). TOUGH D: As they have consistently done over the years, Villanova is again playing good defense this season. The Wildcats are currently giving up just 58.2 points per contest for overall games (ranks third in Big East)and they are yielding just 56.2 points per game in Big East Conference games. In Harry Perretta s 23 years as the Wildcat mentor, the most any of his teams have given up on average for the year is 63.1 points a game. VALUE THE BASKETBALL: Villanova enters the Rutgers game this Saturday averaging just 11.9 turnovers per game. The Wildcats have had four games this season of 10 turnovers or less, including a season-low four versus LaSalle. A Harry Perretta Villanova coached team has never averaged more than 13 turnovers per game during his career on the Main Line DOUBLE-DOUBLES: Brandi Barnes vs. Pennsylvania 20 points 11 rebounds Brandi Barnes vs. Bucknell 20 points 11 rebounds Courtney Mix vs. Georgetown 11 points 11 rebounds
