HEAD COACH HARRY PERRETTA After 22 years as head coach of Villanova women s program, Harry Perretta has established himself as one of the most respected and knowledgeable coaches in the country. A true teacher both on and off the court, Perretta strives to have a positive influence on his student-athletes not only as basketball players, but also as people. In his 23-year career on the Main Line, Perretta has tallied a career record of His 400 wins rank him 29th on the winningest active collegiate coaching list. Perretta reached the 400-win milestone on Saturday, Dec. 2 with a win over visiting Temple. Last season, Perretta led an inexperienced and injury riddled team to a overall record and a berth in the WNIT where they lost to Michigan State in the first round. Perretta attended Lycoming College after earning All-Catholic League honors at Monsignor Bonner High School in Upper Darby, Pa. His playing career was cut short, however, by an ankle injury during his freshman year at Lycoming. Perretta spent the remainder of his college years assisting Lycoming s varsity and junior varsity programs as a coach, and he also aided the women s program. He received his bachelor s degree in social studies and a secondary teaching certificate in In 1995, he earned his Master s degree in Education from Villanova. HEAD COACH JOE MCKEOWN Success and Consistency. These two words have become synonymous with Joe McKeown's tenure as head coach at George Washington. The 42-year-old Philadelphia native has engineered the Colonials' rise to national prominence, and given his track record of success and consistency, the national spotlight should continue to shine on GW women's basketball. McKeown entered his 11th season at GW in as the school's all-time winningest women's basketball coach by both percentage (.725) and number of victories (224). He also ranks 16th among the winningest active coaches in Division I women's basketball, winning 73.5% of his games over 13 years. Personally speaking, McKeown has passed a few milestones himself in his 10 years as Colonials head coach. McKeown reached the 100 win plateau in his second season at GW, his fifth season overall as a head coach. In December 1995, he reached the 200 win mark in his tenth season as a head coach. McKeown won the 250th game of his career in March Success? The math is simple, 13-plus years, 301 wins, an average of 22.5 wins per season. McKeown came to the Colonials with seven years of collegiate coaching experience, including three as a head coach. He ranks 16th among the winningest active NCAA Division I women's basketball coaches. In 13-plus seasons as a head coach, McKeown has a record, good for a 73.6 winning percentage. 3 JUHLINE TALLIES SEASON-HIGH: Sophomore guard Trish Juhline played her best game of the season in Wednesday s win over Georgetown. In 36 minutes of action, Juhline scored a season-high 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting (4-of-9 from three-point range) to go with three rebounds, four assists, a career-best four steals and a block. For the year, Juhline is averaging 11.5 ppg., and she leads the Wildcats in three-point field goals made with 34 in 87 attempts (39.1 percent). STREAKING ALONG: Villanova enters play against George Washington on Saturday, Jan. 13 riding a six-game winning streak. This is Villanova s longest winning streak since a six-game streak in the middle of the campaign. Earlier this year, the Wildcats had a five game winning streak that was ended with a loss at No. 3 Notre Dame. UNFAMILIAR FOE: When Villanova and George Washington meet on Saturday it will be just the second time the two teams have face one another. The first game in the series came last December in Washington, D.C., where the Colonials tallied a win. In that game, the Wildcats trailed just with 4:54 left, before the Colonials would end the game on a 12-2 run. Elisa Aguilara led George Washington with 15 points, while Kristeena Alexander added 14 points and eight rebounds. Villanova was paced by Jenea Skeeters who had 17 points. VILLANOVA VS. ATLANTIC 10: George Washington will be the fourth Atlantic 10 Conference member that Villanova has played this season. The Wildcats have posted a 2-1 mark this year against the Atlantic 10 with home wins over LaSalle (70-56) and Temple (60-55) and a road loss to St. Joseph s (63-59). Dating back to the season, Villanova has registered a 14-7 record against Atlantic 10 competition. ON A ROLL: In the last six games, senior center Brandi Barnes has tallied 103 points for an average of 17.1 ppg. in that span and she has reached the 20-point mark in three of the six contests. From the field in the last six games, she is 42-of-72 for 58.3 percent. In addition, Barnes has grabbed 44 rebounds in the six-game stretch for an average of 7.3 per game. C O N F E R E N C E H O N O R S : For her efforts last week against We s t Virginia and Seton Hall, senior center Brandi Barnes was named Big East Co-Conference Player of the Week with Notre Dame center Ruth Riley. This was the second time this year that Barnes has garnered this honor. In a win over West Virginia, Barnes was 5-of-7 from the field for 11 points to go with four rebounds, three blocks and an assist. In a victory at Seton Hall, she was 11-of-16 from the field for a career-high 28 points, in addition to tallying seven rebounds, a career-high four blocks, three steals and two assists. For the week, Barnes averaged 19.5 ppg., 5.5 rpg., and 3.5 blocks per contest. LEADING THE WAY: After 14 games, Brandi Barnes leads Villanova in four categories including scoring (13.9 ppg.), rebounding (6.1 rpg.) and blocks with 15. From the field, Barnes is shooting 83-of-158 for a team-best 52.5 percent. HOME STRETCH: Villanova is currently in the midst of a four-game homestand that began last Wednesday with a win over Big East rival Ge o r g e t own. Fo l l owing Sa t u rd a y s game with George Wa s h i n g t o n, Villanova will take on Seton Hall on Tuesday, Jan. 16 and Rutgers on Saturday, Jan. 20. The Rutgers game which is scheduled for a noon tipoff will be the Big East Conference television game of the week. MIXING IN A DOUBLE-DOUBLE: After just 14 games of her collegiate career, freshman forward Courtney Mix has gained a reputation of having the ability to do a little bit of everything for the Wildcats. In Wednesday s win over Georgetown, Mix added her first career double-double to her resume with an 11 point, 11 rebound performance against the Hoyas. In addition, she tallied two assists, two blocks and two steals in 30 minutes of action. For the year, the Perrysburg, Ohio rookie is averaging 6.3 ppg., 5.6 rpg., 1.7 apg and a team-best 1.4 spg., in 23.3 minutes per contest. DIAL LONGDISTANCE: Villanova continues to use the three-point shot to its advantage. After 14 games, the Wildcats are 109-of-307 (35.5 percent) from three-point land, while their opponents are just 32-of-134 for 23.9 percent. When you look at it in points, Villanova has outscored its opposition by 231 points at The Wildcats are currently averaging 21.9 three-point field goal attempts, while they are making an average of 7.7 triples per contest which ranks fifth in the latest NCAA statistics. F LO O R L E A D E R : The person responsible for making the Vi l l a n ova offense go is junior point guard Mimi Riley. Entering the Ge o r g e Washington game on Jan. 13, Riley leads the team in assists (5.1 apg), is third in rebounds (4.9 rpg) and fourth in scoring (8.7 ppg). Riley currently has an assist to turnover ratio of 3.6:1(72 assists/20 turnovers).
