HEAD COACH HARRY PERRETTA After 22 years as head coach of Villanova women s program, Harry Perretta has established himself as one of the most respected and knowledgeable coaches in the country. A true teacher both on and off the court, Perretta strives to have a positive influence on his student-athletes not only as basketball players, but also as people. In his 23-year career on the Main Line, Perretta has tallied a career record of His 400 wins rank him 29th on the winningest active collegiate coaching list. Perretta reached the 400-win milestone on Saturday, Dec. 2 with a win over visiting Temple. Last season, Perretta led an inexperienced and injury riddled team to a overall record and a berth in the WNIT where they lost to Michigan State in the first round. Perretta attended Lycoming College after earning All-Catholic League honors at Monsignor Bonner High School in Upper Darby, Pa. His playing career was cut short, however, by an ankle injury during his freshman year at Lycoming. Perretta spent the remainder of his college years assisting Lycoming s varsity and junior varsity programs as a coach, and he also aided the women s program. He received his bachelor s degree in social studies and a secondary teaching certificate in In 1995, he earned his Master s degree in Education from Villanova. HEAD COACH DARCEL ESTEP Darcel Estep begins her second season as head coach of the Red Storm women s basketball team with nine experienced veterans and five touted recruits under her direction for the season. On June 21, 1999, St. John s Director of Athletics Edward J. Manetta announced the appointment of Darcel Estep as the fifth head coach in the 26-year history of the Red Storm women s basketball program and a new E ra was underway in women s basketball at St. John s. Estep, known as Coach E, brings an aggressive and uptempo style to the St. John s program. In her first season at the helm of the Red Storm, Estep guided her squad to an overall record and a 5-11 mark in the Big East. In one-plus seasons at St. John s, she has led the Red Storm to a record. Estep took over the reins at St. John s after spending three seasons as the head coach at Morgan State University from During her time at Morgan State, Estep amassed a mark of and led the Lady Bears to two semifinal appearances in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Her career mark as a Division I head coach currently stands at No stranger to the Big East, Estep spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Villanova from prior to her appointment at Morgan State. 3 WILDCATS STAY IN POLL: After earning a national ranking for the first time since the season on Monday, Jan. 22 by being ranked No. 24 in the Associated Press poll, Villanova finds itself in the poll for the secondstraight week. In the AP poll released on Monday, Jan. 29, Villanova was once again No. 24 with 79 points. Colorado is in front of the Cats at No. 23 with 83 points, while Wisconsin in behind Villanova in the 25th spot with 45 points. In the USA Today Coaches poll, Villanova was the second leading team receiving votes with 56. Virginia was 25th in the USA Today poll with 61 points, while Mississippi State was the leading vote getter with 60. The last time Villanova was ranked before this season was when they were number 24 in the final AP poll of the season. WELCOME BACK: It will be a homecoming of sorts for St. John s head coach Darcel Estep when she brings her Red Storm to The Pavilion for Wednesday s Big East contest with Villanova. Estep is very familiar with the Wildcat program, as she was Villanova head coach Harry Perretta s assistant from During her stint at Villanova, the Wildcats tallied a overall record and a Big East Conference mark. Estep left Villanova to become the head coach at Morgan State University where she compiled a record from Estep is also familiar with Villanova reserve guard/forward Kelly Nash. This past summer, Nash was a member of an all-star team coached by Estep that toured Greece. DAVIS NETS CAREER-HIGH: Villanova sophomore forward Katie Davis scored a career-high 23 points in the team s win last Saturday at Boston College. In the win, Davis was 8-of-11 from the field, 4-of-7 from three-point land and 3-of-4 from the foul line. In addition, she recorded six rebounds, three assists, one block and a steal in 32 minutes of action. The 23-point performance was her eighth double figure scoring game of the season. In those eight games, the Wildcats are 6-2. For the year, Davis is averaging 9.6 ppg., 3.6 rpg., 2.6 apg., and 1.2 spg. in 26.4 minutes per contest. BARNES ON THE BOARDS: For just the second time in the last 11 games, senior center Brandi Barnes did not reach double figures in points in Villanova s win last Saturday at Boston College. Barnes, however, did make her presence felt versus the Eagles as she pulled-down a team-high 10 rebounds. This was her fourth double digit rebound game of the year and second consecutive, as she collected 10 rebounds on Tuesday, Jan. 23 at Virginia Tech. For the year, Barnes is averaging a team-best 6.2 rpg which ranks her 15th in the Big East Conference. TEAM LEADER: Entering play versus St. John s on Wednesday, Jan. 31, senior center Brandi Barnes leads the Wildcats in four categories including points (13.8 ppg.), rebounds (6.2 rpg), field goal percentage (50.9 percent) and blocked shots (24 for 1.2 bpg). In 19 games this year, Barnes has led the Wildcats in scoring on seven occasions. She currently ranks fifth in the Big East in field goal percentage, eighth in block shots and 10th in scoring CONFERENCE LEADER: Villanova sophomore guard Trish Juhline is currently the Big East leader in three-point field goals made with 50 in 123 attempts for 40.7 percent. Notre Dame s Alicia Ratay is second in the league with 46 triples. In her 49 game Wildcat career, Juhline is 116-for-309 from behind the arc for 37.5 percent. For the year, Juhline is second on the team in scoring with a 12.5 ppg. average, in addition to averaging 2.4 rpg., 2.8 apg., (second on team), and 1.2 spg (second on team). THE GOOD HANDS PEOPLE: As a team, Villanova did a great job of taking care of the basketball in Saturday win at Boston College. For the game, the Wildcats committed just six turnovers with three coming in each half. This was the fifth time this year that the Wildcats have committed 10 or less turnovers. Villanova s fewest turnovers of the year came against LaSalle when they were credited with just four. For the year, the Wildcats are averaging 12.0 turnovers per contest. Wildcat junior point guard Mimi Riley currently leads the Big East Conference in assist/turnover ratio with 99 assists and 30 turnovers for a ratio of 3.3/1. BIG WINS: By defeating No. 10 Rutgers on Saturday, Jan. 20, Villanova has now tallied three wins over ranked opponents in the last two seasons. Last season, Villanova won at No. 9 Rutgers, 66-65, in overtime and they defeated No. 19 Boston College, 60-59, in a game played at Villanova. FANTASTIC FRESHMAN: Rookie forward Courtney Mix has emerged as one of Vi l l a n ova s top performers. Entering the St. Jo h n s game on Wednesday Jan. 31, Mix is averaging 6.8 ppg., 6.0 rpg., (second on team) a team-high 1.7 spg, and 2.2 apg., in 25.1 minutes per contest. In her last outing versus Boston College, Mix recorded six points, eight rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a steal in 31 minutes of action. She is currently second in the Big East in free throw percentage (52-of-61 for.852). Mix was named Big East Rookie of the Week on Jan. 1. UNSELFISH PLAY: As is the case with all Harry Perretta coached teams, this year s Wildcat squad does a good job of playing team basketball. For the season, Villanova has had an assist on 342 of its 442 field goals for 77.3 percent. Last Saturday at Boston College, Villanova had an assist on 18 of its 25 field goals. BEHIND THE ARC : Villanova continues to use the three-point shot to its advantage. After 19 games, the Wildcats are 142-of-405 (35.1 percent) from three-point land, while their opponents are just 39-of-179 for 21.8 percent. When you look at it in points, Villanova has outscored its opposition by 309 points at The Wildcats are currently averaging 21.3 three-point field goal attempts, while they are making an average of 7.4 triples per contest which ranks sixth in the latest NCAA statistics. In Saturday s win at Boston College, Villanova connected on 11-of-21 from downtown for 52.4 percent. This marked the seventh time this year that Villanova has made 10 or more three-point field goals in a game. 103 STRAIGHT: Entering the St. John s game on Wednesday Jan. 31, Villanova has made at least one three-point field goal in 103-straight games.
