The reasoning was they were going up a classification which would force them to join a league in the Portland, Oregon area. That would make travel 4-5 hours or more for each league game. This year, Hermiston, the defending 5A football champion, is playing in the Mid-Columbia Conference with several schools from the Tri-Cities area. So far, the Bulldogs (3A) have done well and upset the defending 4A champion, Richland Bombers, in September. The move has also made economic sense. Hermiston is part of the Tri-Cities I-82 corridor and is just 32 miles from Kennewick. Now, their move paved the way for other schools to follow in their footsteps. The Greater Columbia B League had four members who began talks with Oregon to jump the border in their direction. Heggie s 228 S. Alder St Toppenish (Next to Heggie s uneral Home) Two Locations The proposal was approved this past weekend by the WIAA and five schools will join Oregon s Big Sky League. The conference has 11 teams which includes Dufer, as the largest with 84 students and Wheeler as the smallest with 11. Lyle-Wishram, a 2B school with students in the last count, is the biggest defector and they are coming from the Eastern Washington Athletic Conference. Trout Lake, 38.13, Bickleton 29.38, Klickitat 16 and Glenwood 9.75, are members of the 1B GCBL. That leaves Sunnyside Christian (48.88) and Yakama Tribal (66.75) without a league, however. The Knights have petitioned the EWAC (Kittitas, Mabton, White Swan, Columbia-Burbank, Liberty Christian, Tri-Cities Prep, etc.) and they would fill Lyle s spot if approved. Although Tribal and SSC might fit in for basketball, they both play B-8 football, not eleven man. It should be an interesting move and effects could be felt in two years when the WIAA comes up with a new classification plan. u 20 lb BAG O ICE... $ 3.00 RESH CHILLED WATER 1 Gallon Gallons.. $ Custer Ave Sunnyside (Behind Standard Paint) reshest Ice &Water in These Parts! E VERGREEN OOTBALL OOTBALL Vol. 1, #2 Oct 1, evergreenfootball@outlook.com Evergreen ootball is a publication produced by Jeff Place Sports. Published from September through December, the focus is to be a source for state-wide prep football with the most-complete stats and information in the state. ounded in 1996 as an annual football preview, it was revived in 2018 as a bi-monthly sports source. On the Cover T rayten Rodriguez of Tumwater blocks Dirk Wilson of Archbishop Murphy protecting quarterback Noah Andrews against the blitz. The photo was shot by Publisher, Jeff Place, two years ago when ATM played at Tumwater High School on Saturday, November 26, 2016 in the 2A state semi s. Murphy had one of the greatest high school teams of all-time and made history when five schools refused to play them. (The Wildcats won the state championship over Liberty (Issaquah) the next week.) Their championship run also resulted in several changes in the high school scene: Because it was felt the two teams were the best in the state, the WIAA now has a committee to seed the playoffs. Tumwater coach, Sid Otton and Curt Kramme (Lynden) coached their last games against ATM. Otton retired after 49 years while Kramme passed away because of cancer. The Cascade Conference disbanded and ATM now plays football in the Northwest Conference with Lynden and Sedro Woolley for football. They are in the Wesco for other sports. 3 A Kick in the Grass! The Place for Sports Evergreen ootball EDITORIAL Column Time for a Change Looking to the uture, Evergreen ootball is Launched Page 3 QUOTE BRETT AVRE Born: Oct. 10, 1969 The party now is having my kids laugh and my wife laugh. Sports Quote Winning isn t everything, but it beats anything that comes in second. Paul Bear Bryant More Quotes... Your problems never cease, they just change. Phil Jackson Winning is not a sometime thing; it s an all time thing. Winning is habit. Unfortunately, so is losing. Vince Lombardi The biggest thrill wasn t in winning on Sunday but in meeting the payroll on Monday. Steelers owner, Art Rooney I m not going to lie. My passions are football, basketball and baseball/ softball. I don t know what it is, perhaps it was my generation, but those sports run deep in my blood. A little over 20 years ago, I was plugging away, doing my monthly sports newspaper when I was contacted by Scott Butterworth about taking over his football preview, Evergreen ootball. He had launched it in 1996 but because of personal things happening in his life, he wouldn t be able to do it any longer. I took over, but was never able to make it happen because of things I faced as well. However, I always controlled the publication rights and in 2016, I started doing something state wide with football. I mainly focussed on 2A because since I broadcast the Prosser Mustangs, that was where my expertise was. Last month, I began taking up an interest on following the high school scene more intently and only wanted to focus on football. It was while rifling through some old boxes, that I came upon the pub and an idea danced in my head. What if I use the name, revamp it, and do twice a Jeff Place Publisher month, then weekly updates in the future? I already had made a name for myself with several coaches across the state and I have several other sources and assets for information. So my idea, is to do Evergreen ootball from September-December then transition to Evergreen Basketball from December through March either this year or next. We already have the audience (about 25,000+) and I feel it could grow bigger by focussing on just these two sports state wide. Now, I understand, the smaller towns is where we will really make our mark. A community like Ephrata for instance, only follows one school and the town (plus coaches) would be interested in anything we would write about them. So, that is part of my business plan. I would like to eventually do Evergreen Baseball from March through June but that is probably a year away. I feel a step forward was made this last summer when I met several varsity baseball coaches from across the state at the AA Legion Tournament at Gonzaga Prep in Spokane. Thank you to everyone who has given us support in the past and I look forward to a very bright future. Since I have spent so many years covering Prosser and the 2A, I have a close relationship with that classification, but I hope to expand this to state-wide interest. So, please, be patient as this publication goes through growing pains and we work on getting the word out. My children will be graduating this year and I feel the extra time will not only me to golf again, but do some fun things covering sports around the state. This will be a fun adventure! One of my thoughts, not related to high school sports is the Amish Disco Rifle. Tampa Bay has pretty much been one of the NL s most troublesome franchises since their beginning, but they have some nice magic working right now. 35-year-old Ryan itzpatrick, has spent most of his career as a journeyman since he first played with the Rams in But, it is fun watching his success this year. No QB has thrown for 400 yards in three straight games ever and I think you have to respect that. There is a lot of excitement in that sports community and although they have young, Jameis Winston, 24, you ride the itzmagic as far as you can. That one special year (see Philly), can make lifetime memories. u P 3 A Kick in the Grass! evergreenfootball@outlook.com JE PLACE SPORTS

KETNER KUPP KURT CALHOUN Eastern Washington Linebacker Last weekend, Eastern Washington set all sorts of records in an impressive Big Sky Conference opener against Cal-Poly at The Inferno in Cheney, WA. The defense set the tone with two fumble returns for touchdowns along with forced fumbles by middle linebacker, Kurt Calhoun (Zillah) and Mitchell Johnson (West Linn, OR). Calhoun had 11 tackles along with a sack as well as perhaps one of the day s biggest hits. Ketner Kupp (Davis), (photo at left), also had a good day with eight tackles and is enjoying a good year as well. Defensive lineman, Dylan Ledbetter (O Dea) was second on the team with 10 tackles. EWU moved to 3-1 on the year with their only loss to Pac-10 WSU. NATE DITURI 1B Tri-Cities Prep Runningback Senior Tri-Cities Prep (Pasco) is enjoying a great start to the 2018 fall football season. Through three games, they ve scored 191 points and finished a suspended game against EWAC league foe, Kittitas, with a 75-0 on Monday, September 17. One of their standouts has been senior Nate Dituri who had seven carries for 150 yards and four touchdowns against the Coyotes. A senior runnungback, Dituri had 7 carries for 150 yards and four touchdowns against Kittitas. In the Jaguar s impressive win over Northwest Christian (Colbert) Dituri had 10 carries for 126 yards and 3 touchdowns. KIERAN HUNKIN 2A River Ridge Defensive Back Senior River Ridge has had a tough start to the year but a bright spot has been the play of Kieran Hunkin. He is an incredible person, states Hawk s head coach, Steve Schultz. Not an enemy in the world. He works hard, Schultz added, Is a good student and has a huge passion for the game of football along with an incredible drive to win. You gotta love him. Last year, Hunkin had five interception returns for touchdowns with two called back by unneccsary clips by teammates. If he gets six picks this year, he will break the all-time career mark with twelve. I hope he does, Schultz adds. BRENDEN KELLY E. Oregon/Southridge Receiver Senior Eastern Oregon s roster is dotted with over thirty former high school players from the state of Washington. One who is having a superb senior season is Brenden Kelly of Southridge (Kennewick). The 6-foot-2, 205 pound wideout is among the nation s top NAIA receivers and leads the Mountaineers with 19 catches for 355 yards (18.6 average gain) through Sept. 18. Against the College of Idaho, Kelly came up with ten catches and at one point, was the leading receiver in the nation. He was first-team All-rontier Conference last year at WR. Brenden is the son of Brian and Shakila Kelly, Majoring in Business Management and was Academic All-Conference in His younger brother, Brycen is a freshman receiver as well for Eastern Oregon. 2 LOCATIONS TO SERVE YOU! 1902 S. 3rd Ave Union Gap (509) W. 6 Page 6 Evergreen ootball The Patriot Way Liberty (Issaquah) is a 2A High School Caught in a 3A League T hey are in a difficult situation, caught in between Renton and Issaquah. They are part of the latter s school district, but the former s city limits. But, their challenges go much further than that. Over the past four years, the Liberty Patriots have been among the elite 2A football programs in the state. In 2016, they upset Ellensburg in the semifinals in Yakima before playing Archbishop Murphy for the state championship. They were a great high school football team, stated head coach, Steve Valach (val-ich) at the time about ATM. Against a team like that, you can t afford to make unforced errors and we did. I m proud of the way we never quit. Although the Patriots didn t win, Liberty has an impressive 23-4 win/loss record the past three years. One of their four losses came in week two this fall, 26-24, against 4A Issaquah and another last year to 3A Bishop Blanchet. The only two games they ve lost at the 2A level were to eventual state champions, Archbishop Murphy and Hockinson. Where they end up this year is anyone s guess. Steve Valach But, this story runs much deeper than just football success on the gridiron. This past offseason, Liberty, who is only one of two schools (Sammamish is the other) in District 2 was trying to be part of the Northwest Conference the next two years. Since District One and District Two combine for playoff allocations, it seemed like a perfect marriage. Unfortunately, it didn t work out as they were rebuffed by the Northwest Conference. It was frustrating, said Valach about the decision. I knew there would be a little more travel, but with only 4-5 league games, we would only have 2-3 long road trips. It would have been a cool two-year venture. So, Liberty wound up joining the King-Co, a 3A conference with schools like Juanita and Bellevue. (The past two years, they played in the Metro.) Valach said the school will undoubtedly become a 3A school in the next enrollment cycle so he feels it will be a good test at playing tougher competition. In 2009, Valach was the Seattle Seahawks Coach of the Year and there is no doubt to two factors that may have helped win that honor. One is the legacy that playing for rosty Westerling at PLU had taught him. He was a great man, Valach said glowingly. He coached the complete person and coached character. Valach said Westerling was a bit unorthodox in his approach to coaching and what worked for him, probably wouldn t anyone else. He said the way Westerling was able to reach athletes and (next page) IELD ARM LIESTYLE Grandview Sunnyside Zillah Tri-Cities GROWER ARMING COMMUNITY ORCHARD & VINEYARD CROP SECURITY ENERGY LIESTYLE PATRONAGE COMMUNITY INVESTMENT JE PLACE SPORTS A Kick in the Grass! evergreenfootball@outlook.com P 6

One of the lessons might be Valach s work by embracing unique individuals and helping them realize their dreams. Currently, the team has three Down s Syndrome individuals who are now part of the squad as coaches. Perhaps the most famous is 27-year-old Kevin McCarthy, (Blake Horvath and Brian Galbraith are the others), whose parents approached Valach several years ago (2006) about getting their son involved in the Patriots football team. Kevin who loved football, was embraced immediately, given various roles and as the years went by, he became an inspiration for everyone. On Thursday evenings after football practice the team heads up to the weight room for inspirational talks by various people as they prepare for riday s game. K-Dog, as he s called, is now Liberty s final speaker at the evemt and his speeches are legendary. It puts your life in perspective, Valach notes. If you haven t heard it, it s the best! It just shows that sometimes sports runs much deeper than what is on the scoreboard. Valach, who has been at Liberty for 20 years as head coach, has had a lot of success in terms of wins and losses. But, his greatest impact may be the lessons he s shaping for the journey that life has ahead for the players he had the pleasure of coaching, or in the cae of McCarthy, providing opportunities to live out their dream. u P 7 A Kick in the Grass! evergreenfootball@outlook.com JE PLACE SPORTS

8 Page 8 Evergreen ootball Seattle HS Gets Seahawk Grant Evergreen High School Gets $250,000 for New Turf ield E vergreen High School s (Burien) football team has not experienced success on the gridiron for several years. The last time they made the playoffs was in 2007 when they lost in the first round to Meadowdale That was also the last time they experienced a winning season (9-2). rom they were an annual playoff participant, but you have to go back the 1970 s and early 80 s to find consistant success. Perhaps their most famous player was Jack Thompson (The Throwin Samoan) who set all kinds of college football records at WSU and was a first-round pick by the Cincinnati Bengals. But despite the struggles they ve had on the football field, there are some exciting steps being taken forward. Located in the Highline School District, Evergreen is a member of the 2A South Puget Sound League Sound Division (SPSL) along with teams like Steilacoom, Eatonville and River Ridge. One of the problems the school faces is the field they play football on, and share with the soccer team. The Evergreen student body celebrates on Blue riday with a check to build a turf field. As the year wears on, the facility becomes unusable. Bad weather doesn t help either. After a rain, you can find potholes, mud and dirt where grass should be. When the rainy season hits, the field turns into a swamp, noted Scott Logan, the Chief Operating Officer of Highline Public Schools in a press release. However, the Seattle Seahawks, along with King County Parks, have made a sizable donation to help Evergreen eliminate the problem they face with their field. A $250,000 grant will give Evergreen High School the ability to build a new turf field. Rather than having limited practices and then bussing teams off-campus for practice or games, they can use it all year long and during the off-season. Students, teachers and members of the community were given the check in an event that was hosted by the Seahawks in honor of Blue riday. Mario Bailey, the team s Director of Legends and Player Community Engagement, spoke at the event along with running back J.D. McKissic. The Sea Gals, live music, and friendly dance competitions between Blitz, Boom and Evergreen s Wolverine mascot entertained the crowd. u (Corky Trewin) Notes: This article was written with notes from the Seahawks press release along with other general knowledge of the school s background. GRANDVIEW: The Greyhounds are off to their best start in several years, (under new coach Darren Mezger), but are coming off a tough loss (44-21 to East Valley). Grandview is running the ball very well and their defense had only given up 14 points through their first three games. To win, they need to keep Prosser s offense off the field and find ways to maximize their opportunities offensively. PROSSER: The Mustangs are pretty beat up after their emotional win over Selah last week. They will be missing several starters but have enough depth to play well. This is an important stretch for the Mustangs as they play at Ellensburg next week before playing Toppenish in what could decide the CWAC South championship. Nail-Biter to the End Prosser ends Selah CWAC dominance with defensive stand T he past two years, Prosser has been redefining their team. They have turned into a more physical team, controlling the ball on the ground with a defense that puts several hats on the ball. Nobody exemplifies the program more than senior runningback-linebacker Kord Tuttle. He is not big as football players go (5-foot-9, 175 pounds) but talk to coaches, and he is one of the first athletes they point to. Tuttle, who is ripped, plays with the heart of a champion and his dominance at linebacker and runningback was the difference in Prosser s conquest over Selah. Tuttle had 106 yards on 23 carries and came up with several big plays on the defensive side as well. Selah has great team speed and is a threat every play with (QB) Cameron Ditter and (RB) Jake Weber (3-event track sprint qualifier), states Prosser coach, Corey Ingvalson. That puts a lot of stress on a defense. Weber entered with a 9.0 yards per carry, was the leading rusher in the CWAC and last year scored touchdowns six different ways. With the game on the line and the final seconds ticking away, Selah was driving into Mustang territory. Ditter and Weber were the keys in the series. With a big fourth down play, the Vikings tried to run a sweep and hoped to shake Weber loose. It didn t work. All Mt. Si did was knock Woodinville from the unbeaten ranks for the first time in 17 games. This member of the KingCo is still tops with us. QB Cale Millenis headed to the Oregon Ducks. 2 UNION TITANS (4-0) P: 135, PA: 70 POLLS: AP: #1, TNT: #1 Last Week: Beat Chiawana This Week: Puyallup (4-0) District 4 The schedule looks like the post-season for coach Rory Rosenbach s squad. Last week, they dominated Chiawana in Pasco and this week it s unbeaten Puyallup. The Titans (Vancouver), play Skyview and Camas down the road, so put them in the state quarter-finals as an auto berth. 3 PUYALLUP VIKINGS (4-0) P: 180, PA: 76 POLLS: AP: #3, TNT: #3 Last Week: Beat Graham-Kapowsin This Week: Union (4-0) District 3 The RPI would really help sort out the 4A teams because any of 5-6 teams could end up in the state semi-finals come November. The Vikings beat Sumner by 30 two weeks ago, then won last week in overtime. Their reward is Union in a non-conference game. Puyallup is the defending 4A SPSL champion. 4 GRAHAM-KAPOWSIN EAGLES (3-1) P: 169, PA: 126 POLLS: AP: #5, TNT: #4 Last Week: Lost OT to Puyallup This Week: at Olympia (1-3) District 3 The Eagles opened the year with a thrilling victory over Oregon power Sheldon (3-1). But, last week, lost in overtime to Puyallup. The SPSL doesn t get any easier with Sumner and Curtis over the next month. Aaron Olmos punished the Viking defense last week with 185 yards on 33 carries. G-K is physical and battles back, so no lead is ever safe. 5 Evergreen ootball LAKE STEVENS VIKINGS (4-0) P: 159, PA: 73 POLLS: AP: #4, TNT: #5 Last Week: Beat Mount Vernon This Week: Kamiak (0-4) District 1 It looks like a good year to be a Viking. They will be tested on October 5 when they play (4-0) Glacier Peak, but pencil them in the playoffs. They dealt 3A Lincoln their only loss and dropped Mount Vernon from the unbeaten ranks last week. The question is how many points they will score this wk. Cale Millen of Mount Si, is an Oregon Duck recruit. The son of former U of W and NL quarterback, Hugh, he had seven TD passes in a victory over Skyview two weeks ago. 6 WOODINVILLE ALCONS (3-1) P: 123, PA: 56 POLLS: AP: #7, TNT: #6 Last Week: Lost to Mt. Si This Week: at Redmond (1-3) District 2 No state finals hangover for this group. They lost to (arguably) the state s best team last week so no embarassment there. The loss was their first since (They had won 17 in-a-row.) Junior Blake Glessner is a multi-position standout and also does the kicking. 7 SUMNER SPARTANS (3-1) P: 129, PA: 64 POLLS: AP: #8, TNT: NR Last Week: Beat Curtis This Week: Rogers (Puy) (2-2) District 3 They have some of the coolest uniforms with purple and white camo pants but don t let it fool you. They knocked Curtis from the unbeaten ranks last week and went as far as the semi-finals last year. Their goal was to get their swagger back last week and they did just that. Colton Sigafoos s kicking was key in the win. 8 ENUMCLAW HORNETS (4-0) Page 11 P: 167, PA: 37 POLLS: AP: 13, TNT: NR Last Week: Beat Auburn-Riverside This Week: at Kennedy (3-1) District 3 The Hornets have a very stingy defense that will be tested by Huard & co. this week. A punt-return touchdown and a successful fake punt keyed a big second-half last week. Jackson McCann s electric 65-yard puntreturn TD was the spark the team needed. 9 KENNEDY CATH. LANCERS (3-1) P: 210, PA: 117 POLLS: AP: NR, TNT: NR Last Week: Beat Tahoma This Week: Enumclaw (4-0) District 3 Perhaps the state s most powerful offense and the best passing attack is dangerous. Their only loss was to Bothell and this week they face unbeaten Enumclaw. Sophomore QB Sam Huard leads the state in passing and don t be surprised if they solve Enumclaw s imposing defense this week. 10 CHIAWANA RIVERHAWKS (3-1) P: 103, PA: 70 POLLS: AP: #9, TNT: #10 Last Week: Lost to (AP#1) Union This Week: at Hanford (3-1) D8 Steve Graff is one of the state s all-time great coaches and it will be interesting to see what he comes up with against the surprising alcons. Defense is the name of the game and Chiawana is one of the best. KEEP AN EYE ON Sixteen teams will make the post-season and whomever makes it to the semi-finals will have really earned their spurs. Gonzaga Prep (3-1) and Camas (2-2) no doubtedly will be two that make the playoffs, but Prep has unbeaten Lewis & Clark (4-0) putting together a solid season in Spokane. Mead (3-1) under Benji Sonnichsen (Prosser) is doing well, too. Brett Jay (River View) has his first senior class at Hanford (3-1) and they are tough. Richland, the defending 4A champs are 2-2, but are getting their young legs underneath them. Glacier Peak (Wesco) is unbeaten at 4-0 and is just a short distance from the top 10 as is Todd Beamer (3-1). Want a darkhorse? Try Sunnyside. The CBBN only gets one playoff team this year and it could be decided this weekend when they play at Eastmont (3-1). Kentlake is 4-0 and could be undefeated by the time the post-season rolls around. Keep an eye on Curtis (3-1) too. P 11 A Kick in the Grass! evergreenfootball@outlook.com JE PLACE SPORTS

CRUSADERS (3-1) P: 143, PA: 89 POLLS: AP: #1, TNT: #1 Last Week: Beat Rainier Beach This Week: Garfield (2-2) District 2 They played the big-boy schedule and lost their opener to one of the top teams in Southern California (Oaks Christian 4-0). Who s going to beat them in the state? Probably nobody as Rainier Beach found out last week. They won the state championship in 2015 and are a favorite to go back. 2 BELLEVUE WOLVERINES (4-0) P: 151, PA: 76 POLLS: AP: #3, TNT: #4 Last Week: Beat Camas This Week: at Lake Washington (0-4) Dist. 2 Talk to coaches and they say, Bellevue is still Bellevue, which tells you how good they really are. Like the 2A/1A, the 4A/3A top schools can play up and win. Oh, that s what happened last week when the Papermakers lost The Wolverines toughest game now should be against 2A Liberty on October O DEA IGHTING IRISH (4-0) P: 106, PA: 34 POLLS: AP: #2, TNT: #2 Last Week: Beat Bishop Blanchet This Week: at Seattle Prep (3-1) District 2 Just getting out of the District 2 playoffs could be a chore. The top three 3A teams in the state all reside there. Monte Kohler is a coaching legend and the Irish and has been there since They are averaging nearly 300 yards per game on the ground with Mark Tafia (Sr.) the leader with just over 200 yards. Can you say share the ball? 4 MOUNTAIN VIEW THUNDER (3-1) P: 171, PA: 38 POLLS: AP: #7, TNT: #7 Last Week: Beat 2A Bonney Lake This Week: at Spanaway Lk (0-4) District 4 We like Mountain View better than the polls do. Their only loss was to AP #1, Union, 4A, All they ve done since then is outscore their opponents Their test will be on Oct. 19 against unbeaten Kelso (4-0). The sad thing? Like the 4A CBBN, the GSHL only gets one state berth. Let the Thunder roll! 5 LINCOLN ABES (3-1) P: 163, PA: 70 POLLS: AP: #4, TNT: #3 Last Week: Beat 2A Bonney Lake This Week: at Spanaway Lk (0-4) District 3 Their website says, Building Champions While Pursuing Championships. They definitely made noise by beating 4A Camas and playing 4A Lake Stevens tough. This Tacoma school in the Pierce County League is stepping up their game. 6-foot-2 junior lefty quarterback, Caden iler has 51 completions for nearly 1,000 yards. Every morning, O Dea alumni, Nate Burleson, appears on the NL Network. Born in Calgary, Alberta (Canada), he graduated from O Dea in the late 1990 s and attended Nevada. He played for three NL teams. His father, Al, was a star for the U of W and in the CL. 6 RAINIER BEACH VIKINGS (2-1) P: 121, PA: 68 POLLS: AP: #5, TNT: #6 Last Week: Lost Eastside Catholic This Week: Bishop Blanchet (2-2) District 2 District 2 gets five playoff berths and four of the top-rated 3A teams in the state come from that region. So... how that plays out is anyone s guess. It s too bad the Archbishop Murphy was canceled, it would have been fun to see Beach and ATM battling on the gridiron. 7 MOUNT SPOKANE WILDCATS (3-1) P: 167, PA: 67 POLLS: AP: #8, TNT: #10 Last Week: Beat 4A Gonzaga Prep This Week: 4A Mead (3-1) District 8 Their only loss is to 4A Central Valley (2-2), but their shutout of ranked Gonzaga Prep was impressive last week. District 8 only gets two state berths. The Wildcats should get one and the other should come out of the Tri-Cities. This week it s, The Battle of the Bell, with Mead, another 4A team. Good test for both programs. JE PLACE SPORTS A Kick in the Grass! evergreenfootball@outlook.com P 12 8 OAK HARBOR WILDCATS (4-0) P: 151, PA: 33 POLLS: AP: NR, TNT: NR Last Week: Beat Stanwood This Week: erndale (1-3) District 1 After this week, Oak Harbor will play three straight 3-1 teams but their district gets four playoff teams. Pencil them in for one... in ink. They beat 2A power, Sedro Woolley 40-7, their worst loss of the year two weeks ago. The Cubs are playoff-caliber. 9 HERMISTON BULLDOGS (3-1) P: 139, PA: 54 POLLS: AP: 10, TNT: #NR Last Week: Beat Walla Walla This Week: Southridge (0-4) District 8 They upset Richland, lost to Kennewick by one and have a tough schedule. (Of course, every week is a battle in the MCC). The defending 5A Oregon champions are making a good showing in the WIAA debut. That loss to the Lions hurt, but they were beat up after the Richland game. 10 KENNEWICK LIONS (2-2) P: 95, PA: 113 POLLS: AP: NR, TNT: NR Last Week: Beat Kamiakin This Week: Davis (1-3) District 8 Our surprise pick. But, chew on this. They lost to 4A Chiawana by one, beat Hermiston by one and downed Kamiakin last week by two. Billy Templeton (sonin-law of coaching legend Craig Beverlin) could get the Lions in the conversation come November. K E E P A N E Y E O N Breaking down the state berths, D1 has four and Oak Harbor should be one. The other three could come from Arlington, Marysville-Pilchuck, Squalicum, Shorewood or Shorecrest who are all 3-1. You could just about pencil in four of D2 s berths (see rankings above), so that leaves one. Bishop Blanchet (2-2), Garfield (2-2), Juanita (3-1), Mercer Island (4-0) or Seattle Prep (3-1) could spoil the party. D3 has four berths. Lincoln, Bethel (3-1), Capital (4-0), Peninsula (4-1) (Beat Timberline this week 28-27), Central Kitsap (3-1) and possibly Yelm (2-2) are in play. Mountain View should take D4 s only playoff berth. Kelso (4-0) could also factor in, but we doubt it. Now, it gets dicey. District 8 (Spokane and Tri-Cities) will have some good teams sitting home come November. Mount Spokane is one favorite but the other berth could be any of several schools. Kennewick, Kamiakin (2-2) or Hermiston. Maybe they ll just take both playoff spots.

They play in District 4 which has three playoff berths. They play unbeaten league foe, Woodland this week. Should be another good week for coach Rick Steele s squad. 2 TUMWATER T-BIRDS (4-0) P: 144, PA: 47 POLLS: AP: #2, TNT: #2 Last Week: Beat McNary, Oregon This Week: at Rochester (1-3) District 4 Tumwater is prepping for their big rival, Black Hills, on October 19 at Sid Otton ield, which they share. Bill Beattie has done a fine job with the program in his second year. Are we looking at a possible rematch for the state title with Hockinson? It s a long time between now and then but don t be surprised. 3 LYNDEN LIONS (4-0) P: 112, PA: 61 POLLS: AP: #3, TNT: #3 Last Week: Beat Archbishop Murphy This Week: Lakewood (3-1) District 1/2 Lynden has been winning the close ones this year under second-year coach, Blake VanDalen. Last week was another impressive win against one of the state s mostrespected programs. Their home field was covered in mud as rain poured most of the game. Brock Heppner was Back of the Week and Brenden Kleindel had the Big Hit. 4 BLACK HILLS WOLVES (4-0) P: 161, PA: 73 POLLS: AP: #10, TNT: #9 Last Week: Beat Pullman This Week: W.. West (2-2) District 4 Tumwater has been in the way of Black Hills success but the program definitely has moved up a notch this year. Last week an impressive win over highly-regarded Pullman said a lot. This week, they play W.. West who was upset last week, but is among the best programs in the state. Don t be surprised if the Wolves finish the year unbeaten or with just one loss. Evergreen ootball 5 LIBERTY PATRIOTS (3-1) P: 158, PA: 54 POLLS: AP: #5, TNT: #4 Last Week: Beat 3A Interlake This Week: at 3A Juanita (3-1) District 1/2 They play in the same District as Lynden, but in the 3A King-Co League which features Bellevue. The Patriots could enter the post-season with two or three losses, but the only 2A team that beats them will be in the playoffs. Their only loss came to 4A Issaquah (2-2) Don t overlook Archbishop Murphy. They will be a factor in the playoffs. 6 STEILACOOM SENTINELS (4-0) P: 161, PA: 73 POLLS: AP: #4, TNT: #5 Last Week: Beat 1A Cascade Christian This Week: at Highline (0-4) District 3 Like Hockinson, Steilaccom can throw the ball. Their biggest win has come against River Ridge (Lacey) who is 2-2 but should be in the playoffs in November. The Sentinels only test from here on out will be on October 12 against Eatonville (3-1), who is playing well. 7 WEST VALLEY EAGLES (3-1) P: 119, PA: 50 POLLS: AP: #7, TNT: #10 Last Week: Beat 4A Eastmont This Week: at Clarkston (2-2) District 5/6/7 The Eagles lost in week two to 3A Shadle Park (1-3), but have two impressive victories since then. They beat Othello, a CWAC power on the road and dealt 4A Eastmont (3-1), their first loss of the season. The GNL will be interesting. West Valley plays Clarkston, Pullman and Cheney three of the next four games. Win all those and they move into the top five. Don t bet against it. 9 PROSSER MUSTANGS (3-1) P: 135, PA: 73 POLLS: AP: #6, TNT: #7 Last Week: Beat Selah This Week: Grandview (3-1) District 5/6/7 The Mustangs used a strong runninggame and mixed in some timely passes to beat Selah in a nail-biter. Their defense, which is this year s strength, stopped the Vikings as they were driving on fourth down. In two weeks, Toppenish could test them, but Prosser should play in the CWAC championship game. 10 ARCHBISHOP M. WILDCATS (1-2) P: 57, PA: 69 POLLS: AP: #8, TNT: #6 Last Week: Lost to Lynden This Week: Bye. Oct. 5: Lakewood (3-1) D1/2 Jerry Jensen said it would be rebuilding year last winter, but don t let their two losses deceive you. ATM remains one of the most-respected programs in the state. They will taste the post-season. K E E P A N E Y E O N District Three gets six playoff berths and ten schools will probably be in the mix. Sequim (4-0) has the inside track to the Olympic League championship, unseating North Kitsap (3-1), who they beat early in the schedule. Keep an eye on the Vikings though and both should take two spots. Another should go to Steilacoom with Eatonville (3-1), ife (3-1), ranklin Pierce (3-1), River Ridge (2-2 - but get four key players back this week) and White River (3-1) battling for the other three. Clover Park (3-1) and North Mason (3-1) are hoping to slip in though. Sedro Woolley might be 2-2, but their losses are to 4A Mount Vernon (3-1) and 3A Oak Harbor (4-0). District 1/2 has four playoff berths. Pencil them in for one. Selah (3-1) lost a close one to Prosser and faces Toppenish (3-1) this week. Loser will miss the post-season and the winner will probably play Ellensburg (1-2) or Othello (2-2) in a loser-out game. Cheney (4-0) is unbeaten in the GNL and will be a factor. Last week, they beat #8 Okanogan who has simply rolled over people this year. Royal is led by 6-foot-4 Sawyer Jenks and simply are a cut above any 1A team in the state. Maybe they should play Hockinson. Hmmm... 2 NEWPORT GRIZZLIES (4-0) P: 175, PA: 8 POLLS: AP: #7, TNT: NR Last Week: Beat reeman This Week: Bye. 10/5: Medical Lake (1-3) D 7 Boy, talk about no respect. Last year, Newport made it to the state semi-finals. This year, the Polls say, Prove it again. All they ve done is shut out three of four opponents. This week, they should roll again. The Grizz play in the always tough Northeast which sends their share of teams into the final four every year. 3 LYNDEN CHRISTIAN LYNCS (4-0) P: 100, PA: 23 POLLS: AP: #4, TNT: #5 Last Week: Beat Mount Baker This Week: Nooksack Valley (3-1) District 1 What is it with Lynden? The home of LTI proves milk does a body good. The Lyncs beat a highly-regarded Mount Baker team but have a rematch on Oct. 12. Next week, they play Meridian and will face each Northwest Conference foe twice in a homeand-away schedule. Yes the WIAA needs to fix the classification problem. 4 MONTESANO BULLDOGS (4-0) P: 167, PA: 47 POLLS: AP: #2, TNT: #3 Last Week: Beat 2A Port Angeles This Week: orks (3-1) District 4 Montesano simpy has dominating sports teams. The football team is one of the best and is one of three unbeaten teams in the 1A Evergreen Conference. The Bulldogs overcame wet conditions last week to dominate the Roughriders early by scoring 42 first-half points. Quarterback Shaydon armer was responsible for the first three TD s in the contest. 5 MERIDIAN TROJANS (3-1) P: 104, PA: 38 POLLS: AP: #6, TNT: #8 Last Week: Beat Nooksack Valley This Week: Mount Baker (2-2) District 1 Their only loss is to 2A Sedro Woolley (10-7) and the defending NWC champions are looking tough again. The problem? Home-and-away games with everyone in their league. It will be tough for anyone to go unbeaten...ok, we won t bang that drum again. 6-foot-5 Sawyer Jenks (Royal) leads an impressive offense for the Knights. 6 CONNELL EAGLES (2-1) P: 96, PA: 19 POLLS: AP: #5, TNT: #10 Last Week: Beat Wahluke This Week: Naches Valley (1-3) District 5 Maybe the only team that doesn t shake in their boots when they have to play Royal. They are the SCAC s second most-successful program over the last ten years and their only loss this season was in the opening week to Othello Coach Wayne Riner s team will roll this week. 7 ZILLAH LEOPARDS (3-0) P: 154, PA: 0 POLLS: AP: #3, TNT: #4 Last Week: Beat Goldendale This Week: Highland (0-4) District 5 The Leopards have not allowed a score this year but their schedule has been soft. However, they were leading 2A Ellensburg 7-0 when lightning canceled it. Zillah is an old-fashioned punch-you-in-the-mouth team and that is their game plan on getting deep into the playoffs. La Salle on October 12 will be a great game to watch. 8 OMAK PIONEERS (4-0) P: 172, PA: 77 POLLS: AP: NR, TNT: NR Last Week: Beat 2B Oroville This Week: Cashmere (2-2) District 6 The Caribou Trail is a small league, but very tough. He averages over 20ppg in basketball as well and the junior has been recognized by the WIAA as an Athlete of the Week. The Lightning clobbered a good East Valley (Yakima) team and with Zillah playing Highland this week, let the comparisons begin. 10 OKANOGAN BULLDOGS (3-1) P: 113, PA: 37 POLLS: AP: #8, TNT: #2 Last Week: Lost to Royal This Week: at Chelan (3-1) District 6 Warden s only loss was to the Bulldogs Okanogan played Royal tough in the first half of last week s loss. Looking at the polls, you can see how highly-regarded Erick Judd s team is. They will be a factor. KEEP AN EYE ON There are so many good 1A teams, that it is really tough to rank them. Maybe Royal and Connell should play 2A, they ve already proven they can beat any CWAC team. Elma and Hoquiam are both 4-0, but they play in the same league as Montesano and orks (3-1), so it will be tough going unbeaten, let alone make the playoffs. Mount Baker is 2-2, but they lost by one to Lynden and by a TD last week against Lynden Christian. They should be in the Top 10 in a couple of weeks. Warden is 3-1 and playing very well but plays Royal this week. Everytime you think someone will challenge the Knights, nobody does. This week will be no exception. Cascade (Leavenworth), (3-1), beat King s last week but face 2A Cheney (4-0) this week. We will see who is real after this one. Nooksack Valley is 3-1, but is probably a cut below their league foes, Klahowya is 3-1 as is Deer Park. Colville is 2-2 with losses to Cheney (27-22) and Meridian (27-14). Darren Mezger T he Grandview Greyhounds have the most impressive football field in the CWAC and they are anxious to test it in the playoffs. However, for them to do that, they need to beat Prosser this week and run the table to put themselves in position to play for the CWAC championship game at Moses Lake. Leading the charge for Grandview is their new head coach, Darren Mezger, a graduate of Mark Morris High School. My father was a head football coach and has been a huge influence, he said. The 39-year-old is also a believer in Pete Carroll s philosphy of competition daily which he is implimenting in the Greyhounds thought process. Christian Gomez has led the Grandview rushing attack and is averaging over five yards on 72 carries. Mezger is most proud of his defense which is led by Gomez, Monti Ruiz and errell Medina.
