After outscoring their first three opponents (all who made the playoffs last year) 170-0, their next four opponents took flyers and forfeited. Last weekend, ATM (Archbishop Thomas Murphy) shut out Olympic, a solid 2A team 48-0 and this week, the Wildcats opponent, Cedarcrest has also decided to forfeit. Maybe the most impressive thing about ATM is they also have a good kicker. The Private Schools A New Look at an Old Problem That Can be Solved FROM THE SIDELINES A rchbishop Murphy has gotten national media attention due to the many forfeits opposing teams have given them this season. This week, Cedarcrest has decided to give the Wildcats their fifth week off. ATM s dominance on the football field (outscored their four opponents 218-0), have brought the private school issue to the forefront. Some believe they should all play in their own conference away from the public schools, but I don t believe that is an option. Most of the private schools are at the small school level and several do opt up. Also, having a program like Gonzaga Prep matched up against LaSalle on the gridiron is nonsense. However, looking closer at Archbishop Murphy, they used to play at the 1A level and won a couple of state titles. Now, they have opted up to the 2A level and probably should be competing with the 3A s. This year, they played 1A King s and beat them EDITOR S COLUMN Jeff Place Now that doesn t happen every year between them, but it shows you that even a smaller private school can t compete with the bigger ones. On the other end of the spectrum, The B s (which are too big) are dominated by the private schools. This is where the true disadvantage comes in. The 50 students at a town like Curlew do not have the same social advantages that 50 students at a private school do. So I have a couple solutions: Plan one is keeping the smaller private schools in the regular system as now, but they would have to opt up at least one classification. If they dominate that level in three major sports, then opt up two levels. I also believe there are too many B schools and the classification numbers should be adjusted. Twenty-two schools opted up to the 4A level and that threw off the numbers at the preceding levels. Thirteen more opted up to the 3A level, so they hurt the true classification thought even more. I think the 2B and 1B should be added back together and the numbers adjusted at all levels. My idea would include looking at certain rivalries and evening out the districts a little more. I think Tumwater with 950 students should be grouped with most of the EVCO teams they play now but Rochester (496) should be in a different class. Plan two includes having private schools under 150 students participate in the Christian School classification. That would make the group around 40 schools. The private schools from would have to opt up one classification and the schools 301+, two classifications or more if they choose. LaSalle (167 students) would still be at the 1A level (they ve already opted up) but King s (354) 2A. If a school has two consecutive years of dominating in three major sports (football, basketball, etc.) at a certain level, they would have to opt up. It s only my thought, but after following the classification troubles the past 20 years, I think this idea holds water. 3 Page 3 The Place for Sports may be stronger than ever. Tumwater stubbed their toe back on September 30, losing to improving Steilacoom due to some special teams breakdowns. They ve been rolling since then but face a formidable foe this week in unbeaten W.F. West (Chehalis is about 27 miles south of Tumwater). Last year, the T-Birds lost to Prosser in the state title game. Over the past four years, they have played for the state championship three times, losing the other two games to Lynden. Give the edge to Sid Otton s crew. Their toughest opponent was Black Hills whom WFW beat 13-0 and Otton s group downed In the past two meetings, the T-Birds have won and Should be a good game though. When talking about title contenders, the name of Lynden is always on everyone s lips. A perennial state championship contender, the Lions have beaten their two toughest foes Sedro Woolley and Burlington Edison They enter the post season as the Northwest Conference s top seed. Winners of three straight state championships from , they lost the title to Sedro in By beating the Cubs this year, they broke a threegame losing streak to them. River Ridge out of 2A Title Contenders (Continued from the front page) Lacey is unbeaten and were ranked third in the AP poll last week. Unbeaten at 7-0, they have beaten 3A Capital, Steilacoom and Eatonville. But, this week face the high-scoring Franklin Pierce. Kelle Sanders, a WSU recruit as a defensive end also leads the offense at quarterback. Quick running back, Trey Dorfner (19 TD s) is one of their best weapons. After a week off, they should be well rested to meet the Cardinals. Franklin Pierce has a 7-1 record with their only loss in the season opener against Tumwater (77-42). The contest against River Ridge should be the top game to watch this week. Cardinal quarterback, Willie Patterson, should be the 2A Player of the Year. With over 1,300 yards rushing and nearly 2,000 yards passing, he was responsible for eight touchdowns last week. The only chink in their armor might be their defense which is giving up an average of 31 ppg. Two other top-tier contenders include Liberty and North Kitsap. An argument could be made for either team to make the state s final four. Both teams are pretty well balanced and you won t find an individual among the state s top leaders, but as a whole, they are solid. The Patriots run the Fly Sweep to perfection and feature five runners with over 300 yards rushing. Liberty has a spotless 8-0 record and have played mostly 3A schools in forging that mark. North Kitsap has not played the impressive schedule some of the others have, but are demolishing the competition to the tune of 49 ppg to seven. The only yardstick to judge them might be Olympic. ATM beat them 48-0 and the Vikings won So you can see the S.K. is a team to keep an eye on. The defending state champions, several youngsters have gotten valuable experience. They have three players to keep an eye on: quarterback Tanner Bolt (28 TD s passing), Kolby Swift (RB /LB) and Michael Kernan (WR/FS). The CWAC has two other schools that could factor in the post-season Othello and Selah. The Huskies beat Selah earlier this year (20-13) and face the Mustangs this Friday. The season ends in early November with Prosser at Selah and Othello traveling to Ellensburg. With just three teams making the playoffs, one very good team will be left out. Pullman is the Great Northern League s top seed and will host the CWAC #3. They have a 5-2 record with their losses to Fife and 4A West Valley of Yakima. The league s #2 seed will be decided this weekend as West Valley of Spokane plays at Clarkston. Three other teams you can t count out include Fife (7-1) who plays at Steilacoom (6-2) this Friday night. Both teams are playing exceptionally well. Sedro Woolley (6-2) has only lost to 4A Eastlake (6-2) and Lynden. They won the state title in 2014 and could go far. Six others in contention include Burlington-Edison who plays Blaine for the NWC s three and four seeds this week, Hockinson, Eatonville, Washington and Black Hills. This listing will undoubtedly change after this Friday as teams begin to face stern challenges and race to the playoffs. 2A Playoff Scenarios DISTRICT 1/2 North is Northwest Conference South is Cascade, Wesco, Kingco Teams in South rated on RPI Rankings (Liberty is 1, ATM 2, Sammamish 3, Cedarcrest 4) Winners are state seeds, losers out #1 South 4 (Cedarcrest) vs North 1 (Lynden) #2 North 4 (Blaine/B. Patterson ran for 274 yards (on 22 carries) and passed for another 249 yards to remain the state s all-purpose yardage leader with over 3,200. The T-Birds have one loss, but blasted B.H last week in the Pioneer Bowl rivalry game. #2 ranked Tumwater is led by do-everything senior, Noah Andrews, who passes, runs, kicks, plays special teams and does just about everything except bring out the water during timeouts. Their defense is also strong. Black Hills had been averaging over 34 ppg, but only scored six against Tumwater. The T-Birds also sacked quarterback Christian Williams seven times. William F. 13 Page 13 The Place for Sports BET YOU DIDN T KNOW Steve Largent H e is the great est player in Seattle Seahawk history, yet he very nearly never played pro football. Did you know that Steve Largent was cut, and later traded, by the Houston Oilers? A record-breaking receiver at Tulsa University, he was drafted by the Oilers in the fourth round of the 1976 draft and they planned on releasing him. An expansion team that year, Seattle had Largent s former college coach, Jerry Rhome, as one of their assistants. Desperately in need of help, they worked out a deal to get him. He very nearly was cut there too. He was terrible, said Rhome on an ESPN feature. The ball hit him in the head and he dropped it. Rhome was razzed by the Seahawks because he spoke so highly of Largent. After a one-on-one interview, Largent admitted he hadn t slept in weeks because he was worried about supporting his family if his football career didn t pan out. His father had left when he was small and he became their hope. Rhome told him, You ve made the team. Coming off the bench in his first game, he made a diving catch and the rest is history.
