Sports Laugh You ve got to be very careful if you don t know where you are going, because you might not get there....yogi Berra End of the Road Football Broadcast Season Ends Early in Pullman FROM THE SIDELINES I t was a little troubling heading to Pullman with my broadcast partner, Dave Martin. We were running a bit late and I kind of had a bad feeling about how the day would end. Prosser had not been a smooth-running team all year and I didn t know what to expect. Last Thursday, they played a solid first half and struggled in the second, losing in double overtime Then, on Saturday, fighting for their playoff lives, the completely dominated Selah 7-0 in the modified Kansas Tie Breaker format. All season, the Mustangs had struggled to get their feet underneath them Heavily hit by graduation, most of their skill kids got hurt and on the line, several youngsters had to step up before their time. Now this has happened in Prosser before, but not to the extent it did this year. Their Big Three, quarterback Tanner Bolt, Kolby Swift and Michael EDITOR S COLUMN Jeff Place Kernan were being counted on to be the stars and they did play well. However, Swift got hurt against Othello, sat out the second half against Selah and completely missed the Saturday affair. He was back on Tuesday against Pullman, but played a lot of split end. He caught a touchdown pass and that was nice. The heart and soul of the team, I expect him to be the CWAC Defensive Player of the Year, but he surely didn t look like himself in the Palouse. You could tell he was not 100%. Kernan, who has some of the shiftiest moves around was wearing a walking boot for about two weeks and missed the Ephrata game. Against the Tigers, they really missed him and you could see his importance. Against the Vikings, he played pretty much only on defense and it affected the team. I hope both those young men and several of the starters who were knocked out by injury heal well. Perhaps the writing was on the wall early in the year when standout junior, J.R. Coleman was lost to a knee injury. The complicated surgery went well and he hopes to be playing baseball in the spring. However, Coleman told me he would probably only DH. All of these (and other) problems affected Bolt, who was the 2A Player of the Year last year. Because the receiving corps was thin and also lost Logan Hamlin, it affected his confidence. He had some good stats due to Kernan s big year, but nobody else caught more than 16 passes before the Pullman game. He truly missed Kason Blair, who graduated as well. I wish Bolt well. He loves football and I hope he gets an opportunity to move on to another level. As for the rest of the team, Mo Yanez will be one of several returnees and small, but tough Kord Tuttle will be a name to remember. They tell me there is a younger, but faster Kernan on the way. But I will miss guys like Noah Flores who played his heart out. For the Mustangs it was a tough ending, but I think they went farther than most expected. 3 Page 3 The Place for Sports H ere they come the cream of the cream of the 2A playoff teams. In all due respect to every football program in the post-season, here are our predictions and we will even pick a surprise team. If you look closely at the WIAA playoff bracket perennial contenders, Tumwater, Lynden and Archbishop Murphy should be projected final four candidates. But that is not going to happen. One will be eliminated early Tumwater and ATM are in the same quarterfinal bracket so that opens up a variety of wideranging possibilities. The west side bracket also features the state s top-scoring offense in Franklin Pierce (who put 60 up last week) along with unbeaten North Kitsap and upstart Black Hills. The west side favors Ellensburg while River Ridge, Sedro Woolley or Steilacoom and a host of others (can you say Liberty) like their chances. THE CONTENDERS Archbishop Murphy The state s top ranked team played five games this year (outscoring their opponents 273-6) and received five highly-noted forfeits. They have a tough playin game this week against Burlington-Edison just to qualify for state. We hope to give them one heck of a game, says Tiger coach, Herb Lehman. Our guys are excited to play a quality team and Cream of the Crop ATM Favored But Look Out, Here Comes the Old Favorites Ellensburg has found a replacement for quarterback Donny Ellersick look forward to the challenge. They stepped up with a 55-6 victory and now travel to unbeaten (10-0) North Kitsap. Winner of the game will probably get Tumwater. Tumwater Since they lost to Steilacoom in late September, the T-Birds have been a dominant force. The T-Birds have outscored the opposition Remember, they beat ATM last year in the semi-finals and this is Sid Otton s last year coaching, so they have a lot to play for. Lynden Never count out Curt Kramme s squad. They have won six of the past ten state championships and finished second another time. They open with playoff dark horse Black Hills who upset Hockinson last week. The Lions look strong and their only loss is to 3A Ferndale. Ellensburg The Bulldogs have not lost a conference game since 2012 and captured another CWAC league title this year. The football Gods have smiled upon them by putting most of the favored teams in the other state playoff bracket. It will not be easy sledding but the Bulldogs have played in two of the past three semifinals. Coach Randy Affholter feels his team is loaded. They found their quarterback in Bryce Helgeson, who replaced the large shoes of Donnie Ellersick. Franklin Pierce The Cardinals feature the state s top scoring offense (50 ppg) along with the total yardage leader (Willie Patterson). Their only blemish was a loss to Tumwater, but that was in week one. Keep an eye on them, they could be meeting Lynden. River Ridge Two D1 recruits and a one-point loss to Franklin Pierce is impressive. They beat Steilacoom by 20 points this year along with Eatonville. Described by Coach Matt Leamer as a mature, tough, dedicated and all around amazing kid, Nehren is all about winning and building relationships on the field while focusing on school and family off of the field. Sam is an excellent football player but what separates him from others is his dedication in the classroom, Leamer said. Sam is a student first Sam Nehren and an athlete second and because of that, Sam is becoming the best student/football player he can be. To paint a picture of his dedication this season, Leamer explained that Nehren has been playing with an injured knee since week two of the football season. As the junior quarterback, Nehren refused to sit because he didn t want to let his seniors down. With surgery on the horizon, Nehren was in tears the day before one of his last games with this particular group of teammates. I love winning, but most importantly getting a chance to build those connections with my teammates that will last a long time is something I like a lot about playing this game, Nehren said. The key to the victory was defense and special teams. Dan Lucier (loo-shay), who has a state title to his credit and coached in Montana for 25 years, has turned the Greyhound program around. This past year, they went 4-0 in the GNL with several close wins to their credit. Then, on Tuesday night, November 8, they did it once again. Prosser took the opening kickoff and drove the length of the field but failed on a fourth and one inside the red zone. Pullman answered back and took the lead in the second quarter on a one-yard plunge by quarterback, Jake Cillay (suhlay). He was our all league fullback last year, beamed Lucier. The 6-foot-3 senior was named the GNL s MVP and may be a better defensive end than signal Jake Cillay caller. It was his play at end, along with Ben Moos, that caused matchup problems for the Mustangs especially in the fourth quarter. Moos forced a fumble that gave Pullman a 14-7 lead in the third quarter and despite Prosser s continuous efforts, their defense and special teams continued to play well. (Montre Green recovered the football in the end zone that gave the Greyhounds their victory.) Determined, Prosser drove the ball to the oneyard line but came up empty on two attempts until Kolby Swift powered in. Pullman freshman Isaiah Strong blocked the extra-point attempt which eventually led to victory. The Greyhound defense truly was the story in this game holding Prosser three times inside the twenty without a score with one being an interception near the goal post. Prosser, has made the state playoffs 27 of the past 29 years and it is the earliest post-season elimination since 2002 when they lost to E-Burg. SPORTS PLACE Page 7

15 Page 15 The Place for Sports 2A PLAYOFF PREVIEW (from page 3) that changed the entire season for the Sentinels. After starting out 0-2 (including a loss to River Ridge), Steilacoom found their footing. They beat Renton 56-36, Eatonville and upset Tumwater they head to Issaquah with eight consecutive victories and will be a handful for unbeaten Liberty. Sedro Woolley The Cubs won the state title two years ago and made it to the semifinals last year before losing to eventual state champion, Prosser. They have quite a task, traveling to Pullman this weekend for their matchup with the Greyhounds. Don t be surprised to see them play Ellensburg next week and the winner maybe playing for the state championship. Liberty A devastating running game has led them to an unbeaten season but they were challenged by Blaine last week. They open with Steilacoom who may be the state s hottest 2A team. Win this weekend and they face either W.F. West or River Ridge. They have a good shot at the semi finals. W.F. West They lost to Tumwater (as most do), but they have a solid defense and are in a pretty even bracket. They could wind up in the final four. We will see how they do in Lacey this weekend against the Hawks. Miller s Academic Champions Selah Vikings Football team DARK HORSES North Kitsap In any other bracket, they would be the favorite. Unbeaten and senior-laden with a boatload of talent. The only problem for Jeff Weible s group is they are playing Archbishop Murphy this week and if they upset, they probably have to face Tumwater. Get past those two and it s probably Lynden. Ugh! Pullman Worst to first was the trademark expression by T he Selah Vikings just missed to state playoffs this year and were on the cusp, but it is what these young gentlemen accomplished off the field that was impressive. For the fifth consecutive year, coach Scott Ditter s squad earned the WIAA s Academic State Championship. It is a feat that is easier in some sports, but with the large rosters in football, makes it incredibly difficult. We've accomplished a lot such as great team unity and working as hard as we can, remarked Ditter. I am so thankful and blessed that I get to be with this group every day. As Jim Harbaugh says " Nobody has it better than us (me). Selah beat Prosser to force a three-way playoff for two crossover games and although they lost that affair, they had a great year. Receiver Peter Kuhn was the CWAC Offensive Player of the Year and had one game with 11 receptions. Dan Lucier s (loo-shay) group and they have lived up to the task. They get a break by hosting Sedro Woolley this week but even a win will probably match them up against Ellensburg. Eatonville The cruisers moved up from the 1A ranks this year and they are explosive on offense. They have atoprated passing attack (over 2,000 yards) and coach George Fairhart s group beat Sequim in a high-scoring affair last Locally Owned Great Food Locally Operated Tasty Treats Friendly Service Cold Drinks Drive Thru Ice Cream Cakes 401 West First Toppenish, WA (509) week. Black Hills They blasted Hockinson last week and travel to Lynden Saturday. Two of their losses are to EVCO favorites, Tumwater and W.F. West. Washington They bring a 7-3 record t the state playoffs and upset Fife last weekend to get here. Their reward is opening against Tumwater who seems to be carrying a grudge since they lost to Steilacoom. Prospects do not look good but you never know. West Valley (Spokane) They beat Othello soundly (21-6) and could surprise Franklin Pierce. Win that and it s probably Lynden. But, don t count them out, they may be a huge surprise team. OUR PICKS Lynden, Archbishop Murphy in the semifinals in the upper bracket with Ellensburg and River Ridge in the lower bracket. Keep an eye on Steilacoom (lower) and Franklin Pierce in the top. never count out Tumwater and they just might have what it takes to knock off ATM. They won last year by three after trailing. We feel bad for programs like North Kitsap who got a terrible reward for an outstanding season. Put them in the lower bracket and they may be in the final four. It s an odd year, not having Prosser in the sweet sixteen, but there are some new, fresh faces. SPORTS PLACE Page 15

16 Page 16 The Place for Sports BARRY REIFEL (from the front page) epitome of a true mentor. Coach Reifel not only coached his players to be better on the football field, he continued, More importantly he used football as a way to teach life lessons. It was at that point, after his meeting with the East Valley superintendent that Reifel learned a valuable life lesson as well and it has served him many times. As a follower of Christ, I realized I had made football and winning my God, instead of God himself, he related. So, I went to Him and said, God, if you want me to coach again, then I want to do it right, he stated. I want to do it your way and for your glory. The prayer must have worked. The former WSU player and all-state standout kept his job and the program began to turn around. It was about that time that two things happened that had a dramatic effect on Reifel and his program. One was when the Washington Huskies won the national championship. I had to swallow my Cougar pride and admit that I had the opportunity of a lifetime, he remembered. To take my team to summer camp at a university that won a championship. It was difficult at that time to get kids to go to Thomas Ostrander Jim Sund camp, let alone as a team, but he got it done. It had a dramatic impact on the work ethic of our players and the tempo of our practices, he related. Another key was when he heard former PLU coach, Frosty Westerling speak at a coaches clinic. He talked about a different way to coach out of love and teaching players to play for each other, serve each other and give of themselves, said Reifel. I didn t know who Frosty was, but I recognized his approach as a Christian God honoring approach to coaching that impacted lives way beyond the scoreboard and win/loss record, he continued. Those two had an impact on individuals like Kyle Lundgren, a former Red Devil QB who went to PLU. Coach Reifel is the epitome of what a true leader encompasses, he said. A man of authentic character, unwavering integrity and true honor. As football players who played for him, we loved and respected him so much so that we were more scared of letting him down than we were of losing any football game we ever played. That feeling and Reifel s new found path also translated to his players. Some were great high The legacy of Reifel s program is still felt today as East Valley is still respected across the state. school athletes and others, like Ostrander and Mike Ramirez went on to find college success as well. In true Reifel fashion, he preferred not to single out any athletes because of the value every one of them represented. But he did say, There was a player in the early 1990 s that stands out because of what every coach wants in a player. He was not very big at all, but played like a giant, continued Reifel. He cared about his team and never backed down from a challenge. He set the standard for unselfish play, hard work and servant attitude that was what I looked for in players for the rest of my career. Reifel has also been blessed with a solid coaching staff which included the legendary Wayne Purdom and current Ellensburg head coach, Randy Affholter. He taught me that football is more than just a game, said Affholter. Barry stressed that football can help young boys develop into young men. He also, was one of the greatest teachers and motivators in our profession. I miss him a ton on the sidelines. Reifel has mutual respect and is happy at the success his former defensive coach has found in Ellensburg. I m very happy for Randy, he said. I knew when he first came to East Valley, he would be successful on the scoreboard. As it turns out, he s also been very successful at having a positive impact in the lives of his players! On the staff at Ellensburg with Affholter is Sund who said he will coach football until the day he dies. God broke the mold when he made Jim, Reifel joked. Few people can get me to laugh as long and hard as him. What an amazing legacy he has left and continues to leave on the lives of kids that he has taught or coached. he will be the first to Randy tell you that God gets Affholter the glory for the things He has done in Jim s life. After 23 years of coaching, and 148 victories (61.2%), Reifel retired but can (See page 17) pmhmedicalcenter.com Orthopedic Podiatry General Surgery Ear, Nose & Throat Experienced Team Sports Medicine Kid-Friendly Emergency Dept. Toppenish Parks Director, James Cole, instructs a youth participant on where to kick from. (Barry Reifel - Cover Story from Page 16) Sponsored by the NFL, several locations across the Northwest were hosting competitions the past couple f months. With age groups ranging from 6-15, in both male and female divisions, it gives youth an opportunity to show off their skills across the nation. Bob Winters Field was packed and local parks director, James Cole, was pleased with the turnout. He was assisted by the Toppenish varsity football team, which is led by Jason Smith. Kids are not charged for participation and that is something Cole likes. It is a positive experience and allows you to meet kids from other areas. He said he plans to hold the competition as long as he works for the City of Toppenish. still be seen throughout the Yakima Valley regularly. He is the area Director for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes which serves Yakima County and he oversees the staff in the Tri-Cities and Ellensburg. It is challenging everyday, he said. I am challenged to walk by faith. Not compromise the message of the gospel. It has been a challenge to trust God for the finances needed to meet the needs of the ministry, he said. There is so much opportunity and a huge need to get more people involved to help coaches and athletes find their real purpose in life. Although stressful, influences like Joe Broeker of Oregon, who pushed Barry to keep coaching for God s glory along along with Reifel s wife (who he met through FCA while a student-athlete at WSU) give him strength in the toughest of circumstances. Life is full of personal challenges, he said. We tend to try to avoid them, thinking it it s hard, it must be bad. Scripture (and sports) tells us otherwise. That lesson proves how important athletics can be in shaping the lives and minds of today s youth. Success is not measured on the field but in the impact coaches have on others when they become adults. u SPORTS PLACE Page 17
