2 Forward Hugo Kappler has been a standout at Carolina for three years. During his sophomore season he was selected to a first-team All-Southern position and as a junior performed brilliantly. During the past season Hugo was handicapped by a broken wrist for most of the year, but came back to Carolina s lineup near the end to star. An excellent scorer, Kappler is a driver and fine rebounder. Center Alton McCotter led the Demon Deacons of Wake Forest in scoring during the past season. He uses his 6-6 frame well off the backboards and is a fine shot from his pivot position. Averaged 17.5 points per game during the last season and has scored more than 1,000 points for his collegiate career. Guard Scotty York of Duke is one of the best set-shot artists in the Southern Conference, but the blond haired Cleveland Heights, Ohio lad can drive well too. He saw four years of duty with the Blue Devile and is regarded as one of the best team players in Duke basketball history. Scotty is a play maker, often feeding to teammates for baskets. He sets up the offensive patterns and keeps hustling all the way. Forward Stan Naieway has completed four years of varsity competition at Wake Forest and joins the All Star squad for his last game. He maintained a scoring average of above 15 points per game for his entire career with the Deacons. Stands 6 4 and is an aggressive rebound artist. Uses hook shot to good advantage and is excellent free throw shooter. Center Jim Slaughter was the nation s fifth ranked scorer at the end of the regular season. He broke all scoring records while a member of the University of South Carolina Gamecock squad. Slaughter tal~ lied 555 points in 24 games for a 23.1 average. Slim Jim stands six-feet, eleven inches and is one of the nation s top rebound men. He pulled down 400 rebounds in 24 games for an average of 16.7 per game. He is a native of Roanoke, Va. Guard Charlie Thorne of Carolina is one of the most consistent performers ever to don a White Phantom uniform. Although not a high scorer, Thorne is brilliant as a team player. He led the Carolina squad in assists during the past season and was responsible in a great measure for the success enjoyed by the squad during the latter portion of the season. Thorne can hit the basket well from the outside and is a good rebounder for his size. Stands 5 11 and hails from Rocky Mount, N. Center Tex Tilson of Virginia Tech is one of the great stars of the Southern Guard Fred Hengeveld of Davidson is Conference. Guard Ed McMillian of William and Mary has been nicknamed The Gunner for his shooting habits. He had hit the basket with unusual accuracy from the outside and can give and go with the best players seen in the conference. McMillian was a unanimous selection to the 1951 Southern Conference All Tournament team and he was among the highest scorers in the tourney. McMillian is a great ball-handler and dribbler and keeps going at a terrific pace during the entire game.
