His.800 winning percentage (24-6) against Patriot League teams is the second highest in the 15- year history of the league. GAME #4 RECAP Colgate 35, Cornell 32 Junior tailback Nate Thomas ran for a career-high 222 yards on 25 carries as Colgate downed Cornell, 35-32, for the sixth straight time in the 84th renewal of their Upstate New York rivalry. Junior quarterback Tom McCune played steadily throwing for 157 yards on 12-of-21 passing, and recorded his third touchdown pass of the season on a nine-yard strike to tight end John Frieser. GAME #3 RECAP Colgate 21, Fordham 9 Quarterback Tom McCune threw for 294 yards and two touchdowns to lead Colgate to a 21-9 win over Fordham at Andy Kerr Stadium. GAME #2 RECAP Maine 34, Colgate 10 The University of Maine exploded for 27 second half points en route to a seasonopening win over the Colgate Raiders at Alfond Stadium. The Black Bears won their fourth straight home game with their first ever win over the Raiders. For the second straight game a special teams breakdown turned the tide against the Raiders. Colgate was trailing after three quarters, when Lennard Byrd raced 55 yards with a punt return to give the Black Bears a lead with 14:13 left in the game. Colgate led 10-0 in the second quarter on a six-yard TD pass from Rob Markert to Joe Parker, and a 37-yard field goal by freshman placekicker Lane Schwarzberg. GAME #1 RECAP Villanova 38, Colgate 14 Senior tailback Brian Westbrook lit up Villanova Stadium before the real stuff stopped the Villanova-Colgate game with 10:31 remaining in the fourth quarter with the Wildcats leading With severe lightning in the stadium area, game officials ordered both teams to their lockerrooms. The only interception he has thrown this season came in the opener against Villanova. COLGATE S OFFENSE After averaging yards per game in the first two outings, Colgate s offense has exploded for 485 yards per game in the last two games against Fordham and Cornell. The Raiders offense is led by junior quarterback Tom McCune (Hookstown, PA). McCune was injured in the opener against Villanova and missed the Maine game before returning against Fordham and Cornell. In the last two games he has completed 27-of- 44 passes for 551 yards and three touchdowns. McCune has three experienced wide receivers to use as targets. Standout senior Joe Parker (Crofton, MD), who was Colgate s leading receiver last year with 46 catches for 636 yards and four touchdowns, is the primary go to guy. He has 17 catches for 214 yards and three touchdowns. The all-patriot League candidate is 10th on Colgate s alltime reception list. Senior Ryan Ojeda (Absecon, NJ) and junior Jamal Lamb (Southfield, MI) also bring experience to the passing attack. Lamb had five catches for a career-high 157 yards against Fordham. Sophomore John Frieser (Endwell, NY) has grabbed the starting assignment at tight end. He showed outstanding ability to grab the pigskin with six catches for 86 yards and one TD, while his backup, junior Mark Iacone (McKeesport, PA), has caught three passes for 32 yards. Colgate s running game features a pair of hard-running tailbacks. Junior Nate Thomas (Dorchester, MA) and sophomore Jamaal Branch (Mashpee, MA) share the tailback duties. Thomas has gained a team-high 390 yards on 62 carries and scored four touchdowns, while Branch has picked up 186 yards on 39 carries. They have combined for yards per game. Thomas is coming off a 222-yard performance against Cornell. Sophomore Matt Kobelski (Tewksbury, Mass.) has stepped in at fullback, replacing Justin Polk (Grand Prairie, TX), who was injured against Villanova. Kobelski has carried 18 times for 92 yards and one TD. The offensive line is a veteran group led by senior All-America candidate Ken Kubec (Parma Heights, OH). Kubec starts at left guard, while junior Matt Shepard (Natick, MA) handles left tackle. Junior Andy Barr (Shelter Island Heights, NY) is the starting center, while junior Mike Murphy (New Milford, NJ) is at right tackle and sophomore Marc Sclafani (Belmont, MA) at right guard. RED ZONE Colgate has converted seven of its 11 red zone opportunities (63.6%). Four of the Raiders penetrations into the red zone have resulted in passing touchdowns, two in a rushing TD s and one in a field goal. COLGATE S DEFENSE The defensive side of the football is where most of the changes have come for the Raiders. They had to replace the entire linebacker corp, two down linemen, and an all- Patriot League cornerback from last year s unit. The defense is yielding yards per game rushing and passing. Up front the returning starters are senior defensive end Eric Tee (Ithaca, NY) and sophomore tackle Mike Latek (Rochester, NY). They are joined by sophomore nose tackle Josh Sabo (White Oak, PA) and senior tackle Brian Schaffer (Beverly Hills, Mich.) on the front four. Senior co-captain Ron Hampton (Miami, FL), the team s leading tackler with 27, steps in at one inside linebacker spot, while sophomore Tem Lukabu (Avenel, NJ) starts along side of Hampton. The starting outside linebacker is junior Rashard Raigns (Silver Springs, MD), who has replaced the injured Chris Rowland (Fayetteville, NY). Rowland, a junior, was injured in the Maine game. He has a teamhigh three quarterback sacks. The Colgate secondary is an impressive group of players. Perhaps one of the strongest in school history. Junior free safety Ameer Riley (Norwood, MA), an all- Patriot League selection in 1999, is back after missing last season, and junior strong safety Phil Bowman (Cheshire, CT) has returned to the lineup after being hurt against Villanova. Sophomore Sean McCune (Hookstown, PA) also sees plenty of action in the secondary. The corners are patrolled by juniors Max Wynn (Atlanta, GA) and Maurice Robertson (Riverdale, GA). Wynn should be an all-league candidate, while Robertson
