Game Day Quick Facts URI Radio: WHJJ AM 920 (Steve McDonald and Ramsey Baker) Officials: John Morningstar, Lisa Mattingly, Bryan Enterline The Series: UMass leads, Last Meeting: Jan. 9, 2001, UMass, (ot), Amherst, Mass. Last URI Win: Jan. 26, 2001, 55-51, Fordham Last URI Home Win: Jan. 26, 2001, 55-51, Fordham Last URI Win Over UMass: Jan. 13, 1996, 86-74, Kingston, R.I. If URI Wins: A win would give the Rams a 2-2 mark on this home stand, and a 5-5 record at Keaney... it would snap the Minutewomen's nine-game winning streak over URI. If URI Loses: It would be the Rams' seventh loss in eight games, and 10th straight to the Minutewomen. Next Up For URI: The Rams play at La Salle on Friday, Feb. 2 at the Gola Arena. For More Information Contact: John White, Coordinator of Sports Communications ( or jwhite@uri.edu) O'Neil Named A-10 Co-Rookie of the Week: Freshman guard Lindsey O'Neil picked up her conference-leading third A-10 Rookie-of-the-Week Award after a 17-point, 40- minute performance in URI's win over Fordham (Jan. 26)... the A-10 Rookie-of-the-Year candidate is just the third player in URI history to earn the honor three times. Jamie Gray was a four-time winner in the 1995-'96 season, and Michele Washington was named the conference's top rookie three times during the 1982-'83 campaign... this is the fourth time this season a Ram has been named rookie of the week (O'Neil, 3 times, and Denise King, Jan. 2.)

2 Quick Hits Movin' On Up: URI reached an impressive milestone in its win over Fordham (Jan. 26). The 2000-'01 season marks the first time URI has won eight games since the '96 campaign... the Rams got off to their best start (7-5) since when they began 8-4 en route to their only NCAA Tournament appearance... the Rams' four-game winning streak (Dec ) was URI's longest since February, 1996, when it won six consecutive games from Feb Depth Test: Only seven playes will dress tonight due to injuries to Zinobia Machanguana (knee) and Denise King (shoulder). Prior to this rash of injuries, the Rams' depth was a key factor. Nine Rams average at least 16 minutes and only one player averages over 30 mpg (Yatar Kuyateh)... because there were only six players active at the end of last season, four players averaged over 30 minutes-per-game Students In The Game: The on-court performance of the Rams first-year players is well documented. Their effort in the classroom, however, deserves equal notice. Five players new to the program earned at least a 3.0 grade-point average in the fall semester. Freshmen Lindsey O Neil and Denise King, who have both won Atlantic 10 Rookie-ofthe-Week Awards, have been invited to join Phi Eta Sigma, URI s freshman honor society that has a minimum 3.5 grade-point average as a pre-requisite. O Neil, who is undecided on a major, recorded a 3.7 g.p.a. last fall, and King, a management major, had a Alicja Iznerowicz, a freshman psychology major who is sidelined with a foot injury, had a 3.14 g.p.a. Two transfers, Neda Djuric and Hilary Goodrich, also stepped up academically. Djuric, a management major, had a 3.18 g.p.a. in her first semester at URI, and Goodrich, a team tri-captain who is sitting out this season after transferring from the U.S. Naval Academy, posted a 3.28 g.p.a. as a physical education major. Secret Of My Success: Statistics bear out that URI's second-half play determines wins-and-losses. When the opposition shoots 50 percent or better in the second half, URI is 2-7. When the Rams shoot better than 48 percent in the second half, they are 5-3. Unfortunately, their best shooting performance of the season -- 75% (18-24 FG) vs. Xavier on Jan was wasted in a ten-point loss... URI has shot better than 50 percent in the first half nine times. Oddly enough, the record in those games is just other noteworthy statistical trends: when junior forward Yatar Kuyateh reaches double figures in rebounds, URI is the Rams are 6-1 when freshman guard Lindsey O'Neil scores in double figures, and 5-0 when she leads the team in scoring... junior guard Neda Djuric has recorded six-or-more assists seven times. The Rams are 6-1 in those games. Xavier Recap #18 Xavier 83, URI 73 Jan. 28, 2001, Kingston, R.I. Shayla Johnson scored a season-high 18 points, and Yatar Kuyateh also had 18, but the Rams lost to 18 th -ranked Xavier, 83-73, in an Atlantic 10 match-up at Keaney Gymnasium. Neda Djuric recorded 15 points and four assists, and Vedrana Bajagic added 10 points and four rebounds. Lyrica Smith grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. The game featured 14 lead changes and some torrid second-half shooting. URI shot 75 percent (18-24 FG) in the second half, while the Musketeers shot 56 percent (18-32 FG). Johnson scored 11 of her 18 points in the first half, and the Rams found themselves down by only three (30-27) at intermission. The Rams opened the second stanza by hitting their first five field goal attempts and two free throw attempts and led, 39-36, with 15:45 to play. Xavier responded with a 19-6 run to take a lead its biggest lead of the game with 10:02 left. Trailing by nine (69-60) with 4:11 remaining, URI rallied for a final comeback. Smith hit the one of two free throws with 4:02 left, then Johnson drilled a three-pointer to cut the Xavier lead to five (69-64) at 3:44. Tuukkanen missed a jumper, and fouled Bajagic, who hit two free throws to make it a threepoint game (69-66) with 3:24 to play. Reeta Piipari hit the key shot of the contest a three-pointer with 3:01 left to extend Xavier's lead to six (72-66). URI FG 3FG FT Reb. Pts. They opened with defending A-10 East champ St. Joseph s on Jan. 6 (L, 55-34) at home; traveled to UMass on Jan. 9 (L, in OT) and Dayton, one of the conference s more hostile environments, on Jan. 12 (L, 82-74); played nationally ranked Xavier on Jan. 14 (L, 73-51) and Jan. 28 (L, 83-73); and hosted surprising La Salle on Jan. 20 (L, 59-47)... these six teams are a combined in league play... URI knew it had a difficult schedule heading into this season. The slate features seven games against teams that reached the NCAA Tournament last season (George Washington, Kent State, Maine, St. Joseph s, twice, and Xavier, twice). King For A Week: Freshman Denise King was chosen the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week on Jan. 2. King, who hails from Catonsville, Md., was named to the all-tournament team at Dartmouth s Blue Sky Restaurant Group Classic on Dec King, a 5-9 guard, averaged 10 points and 3.5 assists as the Rams split games against Big East opponents St. John's and Syracuse. King came off the bench to score a season-best 11 points in a win over St. John s on Dec. 28, and sparked the decisive 18-3 second-half run with six points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal in a span of 5:22. Get That Outta Here: Freshman guard Lindsey O'Neil is not the only first-year Ram to etch her name in to URI record book. Freshman guard Shayla Johnson blocked five shots vs. Maine on Dec. 15, tying Naomi Graves' mark set against Springfield on Dec. 19, Johnson has a team-leading 12 blocks this season.

Kuyateh has scored in double figures in 27 of the last 31 games. The former walk-on, who played just 37 minutes in her freshman season, is the Rams' top scorer (13.4) and rebounder (7.8), and is one of four players in the A-10 who ranks in the top 10 in scoring (seventh) and rebounding (fifth). Young Guns: Six of the 10 players on the '00-'01 URI roster are new to the program. In fact, this seven-member recruiting class - the first class under head coach Boe Pearman - is the largest in the program's history. Juniors Neda Djuric and Vedrana Bajagic transferred from Southeastern Illinois College, where they spent the last two seasons. Freshman guards Denise King, Shayla Johnson, and Lindsey O'Neil have all played prominent roles. Alicja Iznerowicz, another freshman, has been sidelined for most of the season with a foot injury... junior Hilary Goodrich, who is a transfer from Navy, will be eligible in the season. The arrival of Goodrich rounds out what should be one of the Atlantic 10's better backcourts next season... despite the fact that she must sit out this season per NCAA rules, Goodrich was selected as a tri-captain along with seniors Rhonda Pacheco and Zinobia Machanguana. International Flavor: Four of the 11 players on the Rams' roster reside outside the United States. Neda Djuric and Vedrana Bajagic hail from Yugoslavia, Zinobia Machanguana is from Mozambique and Alicja Iznerowicz calls Poland home... Yatar Kuyateh, who is the only Ram that currently lives in Rhode Island, was born in Liberia but emigrated to the Ocean State as a ten-year old in March, A December To Remember: Although they lost to Syracuse to close out the month, the Rams made remarkable progess in December. After a 1-3 start this season, URI posted an impressive 5-2 record in December. Included in the five victories were wins over two NCAA Tournament teams (Maine and Kent State), and a come-frombehind triumph over St. John's. The Rams defeated host Alaska-Anchorage, 66-65, in the first round, and lost to an experienced Ohio State team, 95-60, in the championship game... senior Zinobia Machanguana and junior Yatar Kuyateh were chosen to the all-tournament team. Machanguana led the Shootout in field goal percentage at 89% (8-of-9 FG) and drilled the game-winning shot against Alaska-Anchorage. She averaged 9.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals in the two-day event. Kuyateh was equally impressive. She led all rebounders (10 rpg) and was the second-highest scorer (15.5 ppg) in the Shootout... the crowds at Sullivan Arena were the largest to see a URI game since the Rams played at Conecticut on Nov. 29, The attendance for the URI -Alaska Anchorage game was announced at 6,658, and a crowd of 7,620 saw the Rams and Ohio State. Both games were part of doubleheaders, and one attendance figure was used for both games... URI also placed second in the four-team field at Dartmouth's Blue Sky Restaurant Group Classic (Dec ) where they played two Big East Conference teams. URI rallied past St. John's, 67-61, and fell to Syracuse, Kuyateh and freshman guard Denise King were named to the all-tournament team. Kuyateh averaged 16.5 points and 5.0 rebounds in the two games. King averaged 10 points and 3.5 assists. She scored a season-best 11 points in the win over St. John's and sparked the decisive 18-3 secondhalf run with six points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal in a span of 5:22. Construction on Convocation Center Underway: Governor Lincoln Almond, the first Rhode Island graduate ever to hold the state's highest office, helped negotiate a new basketball arena for the university. The men's and women's basketball teams will play their home games in the Convocation Center beginning in the season.the new facility will replace venerable Keaney Gymnasium (3,385 plus 500 standing room), which opened in Construction on the convocation center, which will boast a seating capacity of nearly 8,000, began last summer. The $54 million new facility will be located adjacent to the present athletic complex on the Kingston campus. The official groundbreaking ceremony was held on Saturday, Oct. 13 to coincide with the university's Homecoming. Boe Knows The Pros: Five WNBA players gave a clinic and signed autographs for local youth prior to the URI-St. Joseph's game (Jan. 6): Vicky Bullett (Washington Mystics), Katrina Colleton (Miami Sol), Kelly Gibson (Houston Comets), Carolyn Jones-Young (Portland Fire) and Sharon Manning (Miami Sol). Bullet, Colleton and Gibson all played for Pearman at Maryland, and Jones-Young was coached by her while they were with the New England Blizzard. Pearman recruited Manning but she ended up at N. C. State.

10 The Hits Just Keep On Coming: The URI women s basketball program took another huge step forward as head coach Boe Pearman landed another strong recruiting class. Dragana Banjac, Ivy Laws, Katie Stailing and Chrys Washington all signed letters of intent during this fall's early signing period and will play for the Rams in the season. Century Mark: Senior Rhonda Pacheco became the fourth women's player at URI to record 100 career treys vs. Central Conn. State on Jan. 2. Pacheco is two treys shy of tying Kathy Greenberg for third place on URI's all-time list... Pacheco holds the URI single-season record for three-point field goal percentage (.426 in 1997-'98). Banjac, a 5-11 guard from Novi Sad, Yugoslavia, will join fellow Yugoslavians and former junior college teammates Vedrana Bajagic and Neda Djuric. The two-year starter and current team captain at Southeastern Illinois College is a versatile athlete that can play the off-guard as well both forward spots. Banjac is currently averaging 15.1 points for Southeastern Illinois, which is the third-highest scoring team amongst the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I teams at 95.5 points per game. Last season, she averaged 10.6 points, 6.1 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game for the nationally ranked Falcons. Stailing, a native of Bath, Maine, is a four-year starter at Morse High. The 6-1 forward is the first athlete at Morse, male or female, to score 1,000-career points. A two-time allstate selection and three-time all-conference pick, Stailing averaged 20.5 points, 13.2 rebounds, 5.0 steals and 4.0 assists per game as a junior last season. She is a multi-talented student-athlete who earned all-conference accolades in softball and soccer, and is a member of the National Honor Society. Laws, a 5-10 swing player from Wyncote, Pa., is regarded as one of the best high school seniors in the Philadelphia area. This four-year starter was instrumental in Cheltenham High s 32-1 record and run to its first Pennsylvania AAAA Championship last season. A three-time All-Suburban I Conference choice, Laws averaged 12.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 5.0 steals per game in the campaign. She joins former high school teammate Shayla Johnson, currently a freshman guard at URI. Washington, a native of Norwalk, Conn., is a four-year letter winner and team captain at Brien McMahon High. The 6-0 forward earned Fairfield County Interscholastic League All- Conference honors last season, averaging 15.3 points, 10.5 assists and 6.0 rebounds per game for the Senators. Washington is a member of the volleyball and track teams, and is an honor roll student at Brien McMahon. At the AAU level, she plays for Team Connecticut.
