2 Quick Hits For Openers: The Rams are in season openers. URI won it first eight opening games from 1975 to 1983, then lost the next nine openers... in road or neutral court openers, the Rams are URI lost to Vermont, 84-41, at Keaney Gym in the first game of the season. Young Guns: Six of the 11 active players on the '00-01 URI roster are new to the program. In fact, this seven-member recruiting class - the first class under head coach Boe Pearman - is the largest in the program's history. Juniors Neda Djuric and Vedrana Bajagic transferred from Southeastern Illinois College, where they spent the last two seasons. For freshman Denise King, Shayla Johnson, Lindsey O'Neil and Alicja Iznerowicz, today's game is their collegiate debut... junior Hilary Goodrich, who is a transfer from Navy, will be eligible in the season. Despite the fact that she must sit out this season per NCAA rules, Goodrich was selected as a tri-captain along with seniors Rhonda Pacheco and Zinobia Machanguana. International Flavor: Four of the 11 players on the Rams' roster reside outside the United States. Neda Djuric and Vedrana Bajagic hail from Yugoslavia, Zinobia Machanguana is from Mozambique and Alicja Iznerowicz calls Poland home... junior forward Yatar Kuyateh, who is the only URI player that currently lives in Rhode Island, was born in Liberia. Daily Double: Despite a grueling stretch in which she played all 320 minutes in the final eight games of the '99-00 season, Kuyateh finished strong by scoring in double figures in ten of the final 12 contests, including the last seven. She also registered double-doubles in three of the Rams' last five games. In URI's win over over the National Women's Basketball League (Nov. 4), she recorded 20 points and 12 boards, and had 22 points and nine rebounds against Latvia Select. The New Guard: URI's trio of promising new guards had an impressive debut in the Rams' exhibiton win over the National Women's Basketball League team. Djuric, who started at the point, scored eight points and had eight assists in 23 minutes. Denise King came off the bench to score nine points (4-7 FG) and dish out six assists in 21 minutes, and Shayla Johnson added 10 points (4-7 FG) in 16 minutes in a reserve role. The trio combined for 27 points and 16 assists to pace URI's largest margin of victory since a 58-point triumph over St. Bonaventure in the Rams' new-found backcourt depth is good news for senior guard Rhonda Pacheco. The two-year captain, who was the only Ram to start all 27 games last season, played 307 of 320 minutes in the final eight games. Latvia Recap Latvia Select 77, URI 76 Kingston, R.I., Nov Yatar Kuyateh scored a team-high 22 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds, but the Latvia Select team downed the Rams, 77-76, in an exhibition game at Keaney Gymnasium. Lyrica Smith had 12 points and seven rebounds, and Neda Djuric chipped in with 10 points, six assists and five steals. URI carried the momentum of Nov. 4th's 48-point win over the National Women s Basketball League Elite Team into Saturday s contest. Kuyateh scored four of the first six points as the Rams jumped out to a 6-0 lead at 18:14. URI increased the lead to 11-2 after Kuyateh s jumper at 15:27. Latvia steadily whittled away URI s lead and took their first lead at Back-to-back three-pointers by Denise King and Rhonda Pacheco sparked a 16-6 URI run to open the second half to give the Rams a advantage with 12:27 to play. Latvia fought back and led by as many as five in the closing minutes. The Rams trailed, 77-73, with :02 to play when Lindsey O Neil drilled a three-pointer from the right corner to cut the lead to one. Latvia successfully in-bounded the ball to run out the clock. 3 The Last Meeting Quinnipiac 62, URI 59 Dec. 11, 1999, Kingston, R.I. Yatar Kuyateh recorded a career-high 17 points to go along with eight rebounds but Quinnipiac defeated Rhode Island, 62-59, in the first meeting ever between the teams. Rhonda Pacheco added a season-high 13 points and a career-best five assists in 40 minutes, and Colleen Mullen chipped with 12 points and six assists. The teams went into halftime tied at Kuyateh eclipsed her previous career high (8 points) with 10 first-half points while Colleen Klopp had 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting for the visitors. Quinnipiac carried the play in the second half, steadily building an eight-point lead (52-44) with 8:32 to play. After a Pacheco free throw, Klopp drilled a three-pointer while Jamie Buttner was fouled off the ball by Cassandra Dabbs. Buttner converted both free throws and the Braves had a lead with 7:53 remaining. Mullen s jumper at 7:30 - followed by seven consecutive URI free throws - closed the gap to three (57-54) with 5:24 left. The new facility will replace venerable Keaney Gymnasium (3,385 plus 500 standing room), which opened in Construction on the convocation center, which will boast a seating capacity of nearly 8,000, will begin in the spring, The $54 million new facility will be located adjacent to the present athletic complex on the Kingston campus. The official ground-breaking ceremony was held on Saturday, Oct. 13 to coincide wit the universtiy's Homecoming. The men's and women's basketball teams will play their home games in the Convocation Center beginning in the season. 7 Rams On Radio URI women s basketball fans will be able to hear more games than ever on radio this season. WHJJ-AM 920 in East Providence will again serve as the flagship station of Rams-on-Radio Network. WHJJ will broadcast an expanded women s basketball schedule this season airing 16 contests. This is the most comprehensive commercial radio package in the history of the program, and is the second largest in the Atlantic 10.
