Emotions run high as the school's faithful bids farewell to the team's departing seniors. On Feb. 28, Rhode Island will bid farewell to Andrew Wafula, Tiger Womack and Mike Jilling. Coach Jerry DeGregorio and his staff will also be making their final appearance at Keaney Gymnasium. On Feb. 10, DeGregorio announced his resignation effective at the end of the season. Wafula has become a crowd favorite as a hard-working, dedicated player. Jim Harrick's first recruit at Rhode Island, Wafula has shown dramatic improvement from his first season when he played in just seven games and scored only six points. A year ago, he started 20 of 29 games for the Rams. This year, the native of Kampala, Uganda is averaging 4.0 points and 2.4 rebounds. His 82 rejections make him the eighth most prolific shot blocker in Rhode Island annals. Womack transferred to Rhode Island after two seasons at LSU. He played in just 13 games last year after suffering a broken foot, averaging 6.5 points and 6.5 rebounds. Academically ineligible the first semester, the Baton Rouge, La. native is averaging 8.1 points and 5.1 boards in 14 contests. A two-year member of the team, Mike Jilling has provided a steady, positive influence. He played in just four games in his career, scoring two points in a game against La Salle on Jan. 15, But his contributions go far beyond points and rebounds. The first meeting of the search committee was held on Feb. 19 with President Robert Carothers. It was decided at that time that Petro would serve as the sole spokesperson for the University concerning the search. A list of more than 50 people was compiled and reviewed by the committee. Each committee member received a list of potential candidates to contact. The following characteristics were identified as being ideal for the next men s basketball coach: 1. One who will make a commitment to the University for a minimum of three years. 2. One who has been a successful winning coach. 3. One with an outstanding personal and professional record. 4. One who will develop a team and a program that represents the University among students, faculty and staff, alumni, boosters and the community in a positive manner. 5. One with a commitment to and experience with external relations. 6. One who is committed to and has experience with instilling academic integrity and academic values among his players. Youth Movement Seven Rhode Island staff members are expecting the birth of a total of 10 children. Lisa White, wife of coordinator of sports communications John White, is expecting triplets. Harold (assistant football coach) and Dee Nichols (compliance administrative assistant) are expecting twins. Head women's track coach Laurie Feit-Melnick is also expecting. Duquesne (7-9, 1-2) scored the game s first 12 points and held off a second half Rhode Island (4-11, 0-2) charge to defeat the Rams, 83-69, before 4,048 fans at the Palumbo Center. Charles Stanfield scored 10 of his 12 points in the first half to stake the Dukes to a lead at intermission. Rhode Island closed to with 12:10 left on two Marcus Evans free throws. But the Dukes scored the game s next six points and led, 61-51, with 10:19 left. The Rams got no closer than seven the rest of the way.
