Rhode Island nd Basketball Notebook Home, Sweet Home Rhode Island's Dec. 9 date with Valparaiso is the first home game for the Rams since the seasonopener with Fairfield on Nov. 18, a span of 26 days. The Rams played six straight road contests in between dates at Keaney Gymnasium. Sweet 16 Rematch It has been just two-and-a-half years since Rhode Island and Valparaiso first met on the court. On March 20, 1998, the two teams met in the NCAA's Sweet 16. Rhode Island won the contest, 74-68, before falling to Stanford, 79-77, for the right to advance to the Final Four. Only Andrew Wafula, who was redshirted that season, and Jerry DeGregorio, who was an aid to Coach Jim Harrick, remain from the squad which posted a 25-9 record. Woodward Misses Fifth Game Starting guard Brian Woodward missed all three games in the Great Alaska Shootout (Dec ) and contests at Providence and Akron after suffering an injury to his right knee. He is expected to miss 2-4 weeks. Woodward registered a doubledouble with 19 points and 10 rebounds in Rhode Island's season-opening victory over Fairfield on Nov. 18. He played just four minutes at Tulsa on Nov. 20 before suffering the injury. Off the Bench For the season, Rhode Island's thin bench has tallied 92 points (13.1 average) and 55 rebounds (7.9 norm). In the three games in Anchorage at the Great Alaska Shootout from Dec , the Rhode Island bench chipped in just 19 points (6.3 per game). The bench shot a combined.280 (7-of-25) from the field and averaged just 5.3 rebounds. Mike Monteiro into the Limelight Mike Monteiro is one of those guys who is usually in the background. He is the team's athletic trainer and handles a host of administrative duties for the basketball program. But with Brian Woodward and Andrew Wafula missing time due to injury, Tiger Womack academically ineligible first semester and Harry Grigsby failing to meet NCAA Clearinghouse criteria, Monteiro is filling in as a member of the scout team during practices on the road. Should Monteiro suffer an injury while filling in, he will give new meaning to the phrase, "physician, heal thyself." -5-
