1 MSHA NEWSLETTER Volume 2013 Minnesota State Handball Association October 2013 Number 2 News and Information Matt s Message A note from MSHA President Matt Johnson With the leaves turning colors, a new crispness in the air and snow not far away, it s time to get those old gloves and shoes out and get back in the court. The Handball Season is here and it looks to be a classic. Beginning with Mankato in October and ending with the USHA National Championship at the University of Minnesota in June, this year s schedule offers a steady diet of outstanding tournaments. There will be a minimum of one tournament per month from October through June, including the staple tournaments of the U of M Classic, Mankato, the Icebox, Winter Carnival and so many more. It s a great time to be a player in Minnesota!!! However, as exciting as all of these tournaments are, we as a community must make a commitment to hold the Minnesota State Handball Association Championships as Matt s Message - page 3 Matt s Message 1 From the Pro 1 TC League 1 Top Ten 2 National News 9 Langhorst Scholarship 10 We re Electronic 10 Kara Smith 11 Hall of Fame 12 In this Issue Open Doubles March 7-8, 2014 U of M Rec. I think we have an opportunity to show the country just how great the handball community is in Minnesota. A year ago I was on my way to the World Championships in Ireland. I was amazed at the number of players from Ireland, a country smaller in area and population than Minnesota, playing in the tournament and helping out. They made it a memorable experience for many people, and continued the great tradition of handball in Ireland. From the Pro - page 9 TWIN CITIES HANDBALL LEAGUE The season is forming teams now. 2 2 MSHA NEWSLETTER 2013 State Open Singles University of Minnesota Rec Center, Minneapolis, MN April 26-28, 2013 The State Open Singles Championship returned to the U of M for 2013 and in spite of the wintery weather that has plagued Minnesota this spring, the play inside was hot. Throughout the tournament, the buzz was for the much anticipated Andy Nett and Matt Hiber showdown and the results didn t disappoint. Hiber cruised to the final, allowing his two opponents only 12 total points. On the other half of the bracket Andy Nett was more methodical in defeating Mike Wells in the quarterfinal before being pushed to 17 and 17 by Brian Burke in the semifinal. Tournament Results Tournament Results (For inclusion in the MSHA newsletter, send your results to the editor.) on a 5 point run and looked to be in control. However, after a short time out, Hiber was able to steady himself and bring the match back to before Nett pulled away to win During the second game the pace quickened even further. Both players made the spectacular look routine. On one memorable rally that left even the combatants saying wow, Nett had 3 diving gets, 2 off the front wall and one off of the back, before Hiber rolled a kill to end the rally. In the end though, Nett s power proved to be too much as he found a late run to finish Hiber at 9, a score that was not indicative of how closely this match was contested Top Ten Based on the results of the 2013 State Open Singles, these are the Top Ten handball players in MN. 1. During the first game, Nett and Hiber looked like a couple of heavyweights feeling one another out as the game remained within a point or two for the first 20 minutes. With the first game at 12 12, Nett went MSHA Newsletter Vol No. 2 The MSHA Newsletter is published to inform handball enthusiasts about the actions of the Minnesota State Handball Association and members and to help promote handball throughout Minnesota. An A Division semifinal match between Dane Swanson and Nick Olson drew a rauckus crowd as their match went to an 11-9 tiebreak and concluded with Swanson hitting a diving kill shot from 32 feet back. David Miller got the best of Swanson in the finals. Equally exciting was the C final that featured Kristina Rude defeating Joe Cox 19 and 20 in a marathon match that saw six game-point side-outs during its final stanza. In the Novice division, Neal Kunik, with only 10 weeks of experience, wowed onlookers with a strong right and left that made people wonder if he wasn t already ready for the B Division. 3 Matt s Message - from page1 the anchors of our handball schedule and make every effort to play in them. As a community of handball players, Minnesota is as strong as it s been in a long time. League and club players abound, with more joining every year, yet of late, participation in the classic MSHA events has gone down. The reasons for not playing these, or any, tournament are plentiful: injury, cost, time, etc., and are all very legitimate. However, I challenge every handball player in the state to block off a weekend for one or two MSHA tournaments this year and make playing in them a priority. These annual MSHA events are important because they not only serve as an opportunity to see where your game stacks up this year, but they also act as an annual gathering spot for the players of the state to share some tips, a beverage, and those classic handball stories we all love. These great traditions can only persist if we all commit to playing in these events. Simply stated, no one wants to sign up for a tournament and end up in a four person round robin. However, the fix is in our hands: if we encourage the other players in our clubs, leagues or and social groups to play these events, we can grow them back to the traditions that they once were. My challenge to you, as an MSHA player is twofold: 1) make it a personal priority to play in at least one MSHA state tournament this year and 2) get someone else who doesn t normally play to play in these events to do so. If we all take this to heart, we can get these events back to where they once were. I ll see you in the courts!!! Results - from page 2 Meanwhile, in the B Division, Ma Vang cruised to the title with his strong right and willingness to kill the ball from anywhere on the court. The masters divisions also featured some exciting handball with Gary Rohrer and John Nett continuing their strangleholds on their respective divisions and Brett Broxey taking home the Golden Masters crown. Brian Mahaffy looses to John Nett in the Super Masters Gary Rohrer defeats Jim Stephenson in the Diamonds A new addition to this year s tournament was the Youth Two Bounce division which featured ten 6-12 year olds playing in their first handball tournament. This division was the brainchild MSHA NEWSLETTER 3 of Mitchell Lallier who promoted and ran the new division. OPEN SINGLES Preliminary Round Mike Wells def. Mat. 5 Results - from page 5 MN State Handball Club 2nd Annual Alumni Handball Tournament Mankato State University Saturday, April 13, 2013 The 2nd Annual MNSU handball tournament was a great success again. As usual, alumni along with family and friends of current players were eligible to play in the tournament. This is a great opportunity for the current players to thank the alumni for the support they have provided. This year also included a few local recruits in the tournament. Play began from 1-3pm with players being divided into pools via the very complex Wells algorithm. This complex algorithm is harder to crack than Google s search engine optimization algorithm, and often allows the pool matchups to include old alumni rivals and/or current roomies. Games were played using rally scoring to control the time of each match. Additional seating needed to be brought in due to the number of fans. Some of who were witnessing their son or daughter playing for the first time!! After pool play was completed, players, fans, and kids were added to the mix for a 2-bounce tournament. Players were divided by height and separated into four courts where they competed to get to the finals. Youth dominated the 2-bounce event with 8 year old, Nathan Stoffel; high school recruits, Adrian Anderson and Tyler Stoffel; and MNSU junior, Tikhon Esaulenko, making the finals. Nathan Stoffel scored first, but after that is was all big brother Tyler. Tyler s name will be added to the prestigious 2- bounce trophy in the Handball trophy case. The 2-bounce and final brackets were all filmed in HD by MNSU s Information Technology Services Department. The MNSU handball club will be starting a YouTube like channel to display special events, handball tutorials, and film study for players. Stay tuned to see clips of all the matches online. Hopefully, by the end of this semester this channel will be up and running. Based on pool play results, the participants were bracketed into four divisions. Regular scored games were played to 15, with an 11 point tie breaker if necessary. In Division I, it was an all-stoffel final. This is the first time Tyler has beaten his defending champion Dad in tournament singles play. Some of the alumni remarked that Tyler has dramatically improved since they beat him as a 12 year old. John Stoffel d. Tikhon Esaulenko 7, 1; Tyler Stoffel d. Billy Craig 7, 3. T. Stoffel d. J. Stoffel 9, 3 In Division II, it was current Maverick, Joe Nordahl, taking out alumnus, Chris Delaney. Some of the alums had not played recently, but shook off the rust as the tournament went on. Chris had a big lead in the second game, but Joe was not to be denied after losing to roommate Tikhon in pool play. As a result of this tournament, Chris has agreed to play in the handball ladder we run at MNSU. Play-in Andrew Schneider d. Aaron Grimmer 1, 9 Joe Nordahl d. Schneider 5, 1; Chris Delaney d. Trent Edwards 5, 1 MSHA NEWSLETTER 5 Nordahl d. Delaney 1, 13 In Division III, all groups were represented: alumni, current players, and recruits. In the most thrilling match of the tournament, alum Chris Yard and recruit Adrian Anderson served two innings each at in the tie breaker. In the end, a gassed Yard was victorious. So much for helping with our recruiting efforts. Adrian made his campus visit this last week and we are hopeful he will become a Maverick in the fall of 2014!! Chris Yard d. Josh Hoflock 13, 7; Adrian Anderson d. Rodney Piepho 5, 2 Yard d. Anderson 10, (10), 10 All the players in Division IV have been playing for less than a year. This division contains the future of Maverick handball. In the end, recruit Zack Schwartz, who is a product of Mankato West High School s Life Skills physical education course s handball unit that was introduced when John Stoffel invited the USHA s Gary Cruz to Mankato, won over MNSU freshman, Sara Schoborg. Play-in Sara Schoborg d. Megan Heibel 7, 10 Schoborg d. Shannon Strand 12, (10), 3; Zack Schwartz d. Tyler Edwards 14, 13 Schwartz d. Also, thanks to the WPH for providing shirts for the division winners. Membership materials were passed out to all participants in hopes they will take advantage of the great benefits provided by both organizations!!! 2013 State Open Doubles University of Minnesota Rec. Center, Minneapolis, MN April 5-6, 2013 More than a third of the matches went to a tie-breaker to determine the winner. The competition was extraordinary as 80 players competed in five divisions to determine the best doubles teams in the state. The 2013 version of this annual event was moved a week before the tournament due to elevator problems at the planned venue the Skyway YMCA. Everyone was excited to be back at the University of Minnesota Rec. Center after a couple of years of construction of a large expansion made the courts unavailable for tournaments. The construction is not yet done (expected to be complete this fall) but the emergency exits were back in service so we could hold a major event and be safe. In a year where spring never seems to come, the cold, wet rainy weather outside made for a good weekend of handball. In the Open, Andy Nett and John Nett continued their domination with their fourth straight championship. This year they defeated Mike Gustafson and Ray Miller who had a very tough 9-12, 21-14, 11-8 semifinal match with Tim Labvey and Steve Johnson. Blood was shed and Mike looked like he needed stitches after sliding into the wall and hitting his head. No one scored mare than 8 points on the Netts until the final game. Labey and Johnson had nothing left and forfeited to Mat Langhorst and David Miller for third place. Mike Gustafson, Ray Miller, John Nett, Andy Nett The first round losers in the Open played for the A championship. Tim Kappes and Steve Tamminga took the honors when Kris and Keith Schaumman could not make it to the finals. Nick Olson and Dane Swanson took third place over Marc Tobin and Chris Iverson. Jack Hickman (standing in for Keith Schaumann) Kris Schaumann, Tim Kappes, Steve Tamminga Bailey Chandler and Kara Smith took the top spot in the B Doubles barely surviving a semifinal match against John and father Steve Laliberte in a tie-breaker. The Lalibertes went on the claim third place While Chandler and Smith handily defeated Tikhon Esaulenko and Joe Nordahl who could not seem to get theire grove after a very tough tie-breaker simfinal win over Dean Held and Ken Toering. Sergio Garci and Steve Letourneau took consolation honors over Ten Spencer and Matt Johnson. Kara Smith, Bailey Chandler, Tikhon Esaulenko, Joe Nordahl More than half the matches in the C Doubles took tie-breakers including the finals where Kristina Rude and Jessica Bohlken defeated Darrell Saari and Will Bjornnes in a victory of youth over experience. Josh Hoflock and Shannon Strand took third in an all Mankato match against Sara Schoborg and Zack Schwartz. Trent and Tyler Edwards took consolation honors defeating new players Katie Heinemann and Liz Winberg. Darrell Saari, Kristina Rude, Jessica Bohlken, Will Bjornnes North Dakotans Jay Spooner and Dan Passolt took a couple of tiebreakers to take the Golden Masters A championship defeating last year s champ Brett Broxey with an old partner Emil Weiler filling in for Brett s regular partner Hank Ulrich who is out with an Achilles injury. Brett and Emil had a pretty strong performance but came up 4 points short in the tie-breaker. Passolt and Spooner had a great semifinal matrch against Bill Hickey and Don Reiter. John Miller and Clancy Mylan extended their streak of wins in this division to three since first breaking into the division on No one scored more than 10 points in any game against the champs. George Langhorst and Mike McQuillan took third place over Brain Mahaffy and Greg Taylor who had lost a very tough tie-breaker semifinal match against Mike Burke and Mike Black. Let s show the rest of the handball world that this is true at the Nationals in June. I hope everyone reading this newsletter will be a part of the Nationals. Just by being a participant you are helping handball. If you haven t played in awhile you have 8 months to get ready. If you have been playing you have 8 months to grow and improve. I would love to see a return by many players that haven t entered a tournament in awhile as well as the debut of all of the players that have never played in a national tournament. We could have a Minnesotan in every division and more than 10 divisions won by someone from Minnesota. I hope to see all of the MSHA members at the Nationals in June. National News Hello MSHA'ers! 11 MSHA NEWSLETTER 11 The Following letter was received from Kara Smith after her acceptance of the Moy Langhorst Scholarship award at the 2013 MSHA Hall of fame and Awards banquet. Everyone, First and foremost, I apologize for my partial rudeness in refusing to give a speech tonight. Honestly, I said there will be no speech because I wasn t sure I could fathom any other words. When Matt Johnson stood up to introduce the winner, I was beyond confident that it would be the person I nominated at the end of last year s banquet. To hear my name called instead was jaw dropping to say the very least. I wish I could be more articulate when it comes to really emotional moments but unfortunately that s when all words escape me. I would like to thank, first and foremost, the Langhorst family for offering such an amazing scholarship and opportunity for developing players. Winning this award is an incredible honor and I can only hope I can live up to the name to which it is dedicated. Secondly, the MSHA as a whole and the scholarship committee for even considering me, much less actually voting for me, for this incredible award. As a player who has been looking up to the winners of this scholarship since I first heard about it, I am finding it very difficult to imagine my name in league with theirs. So thank you for believing in me far more than I seem to believe in myself. I cannot, in good faith, accept this honor without thanking those who have made me the player I am today. Matt said numerous things tonight which I very much appreciated but truly don t believe could have come to pass without his help, or the help of so many others. Jesse Fleck, for one, was the person who not only introduced me to the game, but spent hours upon hours teaching me to hit a back left corner wrap around when I wanted nothing more than to initially give up. It was his patience and love of the game and our club that inspired me to want to do better. When Jesse left for graduate school, Brian Burke and Dane Swanson stepped in as my coaches. As much as Brian and I tend to disagree during an actual match (I tend to be very stubborn when in a tournament setting ), he was the one who taught me that there was no one who could win any given match other than me. I had to beat myself. Mentally, that was the greatest lesson I ve learned yet. As for Dane, I can t put to words how patient he has been with me over the last year, being willing to skunk me any opportunity he gets, just so I learn to hit the hardest serves and most difficult returns. I can t thank Jesse, Brian, and Dane enough for being the ones to teach me what I know both mentally and technically. While handball is a very technical and mental sport, I have also learned that it comes with the best people on earth. Four years ago, Matt Johnson sat the collegiate players down on the bleachers at the University Recreation Center and told the newbies what was expected of us at the collegiate tournament. He told us that no matter how we played, as long as we were respectful and showed good sportsmanship then he would be proud of us. Over the next four years, we (as a club) brought home two sportsmanship awards. I am a firm believer that his belief and trust in us were a huge factor in such an accomplishment. It speaks volumes to the organization that he has created, to have brought home not only individual national championships, but more importantly, a physical representation of the character which we so strongly promote. I could go on and on thanking everyone who spent even an ounce of effort in helping my game (Jim Carlson, Ted Bergstrom, Bailey Chandler, Ray Miller, Bob the Yoda of handball Schaumann, Paul Tobin...) and never be able to truly express how thankful I am for each and every one. Handball has easily been one of the best things I ve added to my life and will always be one I stick with (no matter what state I end up in ). So thank you; to each and every one of you. I honestly wouldn t be the player I am today without every interaction, every goofy conversation, every game we ve played (even the ones where I didn t score a point). Thank you for taking the time to teach me. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. With all of the love in my heart, Kara Smith
