It seems these days that joint replacements are as common as flu shots. Handball players are replacing hips and knees and still getting back to the game. As many of you may have heard, I decided my right ankle was no longer capable of keeping me moving. I opted for a total ankle joint replacement. Ankle replacements are far more rare than hips, knees or even shoulders the doctor that performed TWIN CITIES HANDBALL LEAGUE The season is well along. 2 2 MSHA NEWSLETTER Minnesota Fall Handball Classic November 21-22, 2008 University of Minnesota Rec Center In Minnesota, when the weather begins to get crisp outside and locals trade in their golf clubs for handball gloves, it is time for University of Minnesota Handball Classic. This year s tournament was the 15 th installment of the annual event, held every year prior to Thanksgiving at the University of Minnesota, and it had the exciting, fast paced handball that Minnesotans (and some Wisconsinites) have come to expect. This year s Open bracket featured seventy four players including the top three in the state. In a less than shocking outcome, the eight man open bracket came down to a final between Matt Hiber and Pete Crouser. Once again, Matt proved that he is still the dominant player in Minnesota handball by winning the tournament without relinquishing a single game. Although the Open division lacked suspense, many other matches offered plenty to go around. An epic hour and a half match between Ming Curran and Steve Grossman that ended with Curran winning the tiebreak set the tone for the event. Other exciting matches such as Ingram v. Taylor and Swenson v. Van Eps forced players to continue to push their bodies to the brink of exhaustion. MSHA Newsletter Vol No. 1 The MSHA Newsletter is published to inform handball enthusiasts about the actions of the Minnesota State Handball Association and members and to help promote handball throughout Minnesota. Contributing articles are encouraged. Contact the editor. Editor: Sheldon Silberman 120 North Westwood Drive Golden Valley, MN (612) Fax: (612) MNhandball@aol.com Contributors: Greg Taylor Tournament Results (For inclusion in the MSHA newsletter, send your results to the editor.) Perhaps the most exciting match of the tournament, however, was the B Final between two Mankato players, Brandon Glaze and Derek Swenson. Swenson took home the match and the Championship with an win over Glaze, a match that left both players sitting on the court gasping for air after its conclusion. Additionally, a theme that developed throughout the tournament was the success of the Mankato players, coached by Mike Wells. All told a member of the Mankato team won the B title, was a runner-up in the C title and competed in almost every bracket. Additionally, Maverick players were consistently able to edge out Minnesota players in head to head matchups. Many of the players from these two teams were returning for their second and in some cases their third year and a friendly rivalry between the two teams seems to be developing. However exciting the play was, it was clear that the highlight of the event was the large number of young people involved. 46 of the seventy-four players in the tournament were current students and 56 of the players who participated were younger than 30 years of age, many who were playing in their second or third tournament. With numbers like this, it is clear that handball in Minnesota is alive and well with an up and coming crop of players to push it forward. Open Division FIRST ROUND Matt Hiber def. The Collegiates are Coming The 2009 Collegiate Handball Tournament is coming to the University of Minnesota February 18-22, We need your help! Contact Matt Johnson at to volunteer. Three-Wall Update According to Curt Schlenner, the St. Paul Park & Rec Department is considering replacing the Duluth/Case Rec Center with a new facility. The new development would include eight new tennis courts with a winter dome. The Parks Department is considering including four three-wall handball/racquetball courts to be included under the dome. How about winter three-wall?! Curt has supplied them with plans and estimates from other facilities around the country. The new Rec Center would include offices and a gym or two and maybe locker rooms. A couple of new baseball fields are also in the preliminary plans. There is no firm time table. For those of you familiar with the area this is near the existing compost site at the east end of the Phalen Corridor. There is also talk by some folks playing at the Midway YMCA of developing something temporary somewhere in St. Paul that would suffice for the interim. There is some potential individual financial support if a sight can be supplied. In addition, we still have interest from an anonymous donor to build two courts on donated property somewhere in the Twin Cities. If you can help or have suggested locations contact Curt Schlenner at

There were 39 entrants in the tournament divisions, with half of them under the age of 25. Minnesota State Mankato s Handball Club was well represented with eight current club members and one alumnus. After the matches on Friday night, all the handball players gathered at Jake s Stadium Pizza near MSU s campus for all the pizza they could eat. Youth Tournament Six youth competitors joined the tournament on Friday night and played a minimum of three matches. 5 Results - from page 4 good crop of players entering their teens in the Mankato area. These competitors are from the youth handball class John Stoffel runs on Sunday afternoons at the YMCA. Their level of play is increasing weekly and it showed in their tournament matches. In seven or eight years, MSU s Handball Club could be the recipient of several experienced youth players. Open Singles After a one-year hiatus from the Mankato tournament, Andy Nett emerged as the open singles champion. Having won the Rudy Harris in September in Fargo, ND, Andy will be difficult to beat in the MN state tournament this year and was playing excellent handball in Mankato. He defeated his brother, Tom, in the finals in a match where there were no secrets as these two often compete against each other in Winona, MN. Some new faces in the Open division gave the perennial contenders all they wanted in the first round. One more year of tournament experience and Brian Burke, Mathias Langhorst, and Brandon Glaze can emerge as top MN talent. Quarter Finals Andy Nett d. Marc Tobin, 0, 3; Jeff Ryan d. B/C Singles The B/C Singles Division included six players participating in their first handball tournament. Although there were varying levels of handball experience in this bracket, players eventually played themselves into some very competitive matches. Every player was guaranteed three matches, so the courts were full from 3pm on Friday through 6pm on Saturday. Troy Lund, from Sioux City, IA, emerged victorious over MSU s Derek Swenson in the finals. Troy played excellent handball and we are looking forward to having him compete in the Open division next year. There was no viewing room left at most of 12 year old Tyler Stoffel s matches when he battled the collegiate players. Tyler continues to improve and was able to defend his consolation title from last year. The college players had better keep practicing because in another year Tyler will be difficult to beat. Arne Wells returned to tournament play after several years and two ankle replacements. In the end, the gallery agreed that Jerry Pietz was the tournament MVP and many of Jerry s regular opponents commented that they had never seen him play like that in their Monday afternoon matches. So what motivates someone into giving up natural parts for plastic and steel? Mostly it is pain and the inability to do what you want to do. For handball players it is often not being able to play the sport the way we once thought we could. Some have given up the sport in favor of less demanding activities. As my problem progressed I adapted my moves in both handball and golf. By the 2000 Nationals in Minneapolis, I was suffering with pain at night. I visited the USHA training staff and they recommended I try a popular supplement of Glucosamine and Condrotin. After 4 or 5 weeks I noticed the pain had subsided at night and flexibility had improved not just with my ankle but with my shoulders too. This worked well for several years. In 2002 I made the rounds to many of the ankle specialists including Mayo Clinic. Mayo recommended the Arizona boot many of you saw me wear the last few years. I adapted my game to no ankle flexibility sort of what a fused ankle would support. Mostly, I found I had to be better at anticipation and balance things I had been told before but now became crucial to just playing. It actually improved my shot-making by improving my fundamentals. (I guess I am not coachable until you remove an appendage!) However, when I could no longer take my dog for a Ankle - page 7

7 M SHA NEW SLETTER 7 Ankle - from page 6 decent walk, it was time to take more drastic action. I knew Arnie Wells (from Mankato) had gone through joint replacement and I had met several folks that had fused ankles. Arnie was just getting back on the court after his second replacement. Everyone spoke highly of Dr. J. Christiaan Coetzee. I went in expecting to schedule an ankle fusion everything I read and heard suggested replacement joints were not suitable for heavy exercise. After the xrays and evaluation, the doctor said I was a good candidate for either fusion or replacement. We scheduled the surgery for June 10, Arnie was an invaluable resource as he suggested little things like a hand held shower head I was able to install before surgery. I spent six weeks getting around on a peg-leg device called an iwalkfree I purchased through ebay. After several weeks convalescing I went golfing (par 3) with a friend. I couldn t even swing at 50% for fear of toppling over but was amazed at how accurately you can hit the ball with a gentle swing. I golfed almost as well as I could with two feet! But I was most anxious to get back on the court. After three months and good looking x-rays the doctor said I could try handball 15 minutes twice a week. I told him that wasn t even a warm up. My handball buddies were very welcoming and allowed me a lot of slack as I moved around VERY tentatively. But I was back on the court in just three short months! I increased my activity slowly. I worked in therapy on backpeddling something I hadn t really been able to do for a long time. As I got more confident in my movements, I found I was able to step into the ball better than before. I also had lost my timing which resulted in some sore arms. (I protected my hands to avoid the expected bruises after the layoff.) Handball is what drove me through the difficult and slow therapy my physical therapist was most watchful of overstressing the foot in the recovery process and kept slowing me down. I learned that the surgery disrupts nerves in the ankle joint that provide the brain the precise location and balance info needed to stand on one foot. Without the proper nerve info and weak muscles and tendons you probably couldn t pass a sobriety test! Most of the physical therapy is about getting these skills back. It s over six months since my surgery and I am looking forward to participating in tournaments again. I m still healing but getting back on the court with a great group of friends is great therapy! Grants from USHA The United States Handball Association has a new and improved grant program. Annual Grants are available for two types of programs: Beginning and Intermediate Programs. These grants provide funding for instructional staffing, facility usage, and limited administration costs. Annual Developmental Program Grant Proposals must be received by 23 November each year. Specific Purpose Grants for Tournament, Travel, and Equipment Grants can be submitted for at any time and are intended to support Developmental Programs and Schools and other opportunities.
