I Believe in creating an atmosphere that fosters confidence and respects how hard it is to be successful. I Believe you have to do the work to see the results. I Ask for three commitments from my players: a commitment to graduate, a commitment to train to win championships and a commitment to represent Kansas with class. I Believe in recruiting players who have a passion to compete, players who can make plays, but are committed to team and unselfish play. I believe in recruting players who like to play an uptempo style, and players who have the discipline and toughness to want to defend. I Believe in having high expectations for yourself and your team and not allowing yourself to settle. I Believe in hard work and developing players over time. I Believe in consistency and continuity in the coaching staff. I Believe in providing the resources for my players to compete at the highest level both academically and athletically. I Believe in playing the best to be the best. I Believe in your actions not in your words. I Believe that it s about having talent and building very real lasting relationships with my players. I Believe that the most important qualities of a player are toughness, confidence and discipline EVERY DAY. I Believe that all of this is bigger than one individual. I Believe in Kansas Basketball.

The foundation is set, now it s time to move forward. When Kansas head coach Bonnie Henrickson arrived in Lawrence just over four years ago, she inherited a program that had fallen on hard times. The Jayhawks, who had once been the dominant program in the former Big 8 Conference and current Big 12 Conference, had taken a step back. Henrickson knew it would not be easy to turn things around, but she saw the huge amount of potential at Kansas, an athletics program steeped in tradition. So Henrickson packed her bags, collected a well-respected staff to join her and made her way to KU. The first four seasons of her tenure have been packed with hard work, dedication and determination to bring the Jayhawks back to prominence. And now, in the beginning of her fifth season at the helm of the program, the future could not be brighter. Fresh off the program s second postseason appearance in the last three seasons and with over 88 percent of the team s JAYHAWK OUTLOOK scoring returning and nearly 80 percent of the rebounding still intact for the upcoming season, the Jayhawks are primed and ready to soar. JAYHAWK SENIOR CLASS NAME POS. HT. EXP. PTS. REB. Ivana Catic G 5-8 3L Katie Smith G L Marija Zinic F 6-2 3L Returning for their senior seasons are guards Ivana Catic and Katie Smith and forward Marija Zinic. The trio are expected to provide a wealth of leadership in their final season in the crimson and blue. Catic, a native of Zrenjanin, Serbia, will again battle for the starting point guard position, a position she held for 30 of the 33 games the Jayhawks played in Catic, although not a dominant scorer, ranked in the top five in assist-to-turnover ratio in She also has been voted a team captain for the third-straight season, as she provides excellent leadership both vocally and with her actions. Although Smith does not play a wealth of minutes, her presence is felt each and every day throughout the year. Both a positive reinforcer and a true student of the game, she challenges her teammates daily to work hard and is ready to step in whenever her number gets called. The proof of her importance to the program is evident as Smith was selected as a team captain by her peers. Zinic has shown flashes of being a force in the post and has had a strong showing in preseason workouts. She would be a welcome presence in the post for the Jayhawks, as they are looking for a compliment to standout center Krysten Boogaard. 6
JAYHAWK JUNIOR CLASS Name Pos. Ht. Exp. Pts. Reb. Rebecca Feickert F-C 6-2 2L LaChelda Jacobs G L Kelly Kohn G 5-9 2L Danielle McCray G-f L Sade Morris G L Porscha Weddington F 6-1 2L The heart and soul of the Jayhawks resides in the six-player junior class. Guards LaChelda Jacobs, Kelly Kohn, Danielle McCray and Sade Morris and forwards Rebecca Feickert and Porscha Weddington return for their third season and will serve as the anchor of the Kansas program. The six juniors arrived as one of the most heralded recruiting classes in Kansas history and have not failed to impress. While their best days lie ahead of them, they have already made a huge impact on the Jayhawk program. McCray returns for her junior season primed to be one of the top players in both the ultra competitive Big 12 Conference and across the nation. Voted as the third team captain, the 5-foot-11 Olathe, Kan., native is the Jayhawks top returning scorer (14.9) and rebounder (7.1) from a season ago. One of the most well-rounded players in the NCAA, Mc- Cray finished the season ranked in the top 15 in the Big 12 in eight different statistical categories. Never was her realm of abilities more on display than when she finished with 18 points, nine rebounds and a career-best eight steals in KU s season-ending loss at Michigan State. Not wanting to settle, McCray worked diligently over the summer on developing her guard skill set and is ready to JAYHAWK OUTLOOK push the Jayhawks to new heights as they continue on their quest to return to national prominence and the NCAA Tournament. Right there pushing McCray every day is fellow junior guard Sade Morris. The only Jayhawk to start every game last season, Morris, a 5-10 Norman, Okla., native finished the season having posted double figures in scoring in 17 games, leading the team in scoring in eight of those games. Morris was extremely effective from the free throw line, knocking down 79.8 percent of her shots. She played a huge role on the defensive side of the ball and figures to do so again this season. Morris narrowly missed averaging double figures last season, turning in 9.8 points per game, but with the hard work she put in during the offseason, those numbers are likely to go up. After providing valuable depth early in the season, Jacobs was inserted into the starting lineup late in her sophomore season. She is an athletic player who can create her own shot every time down the court. Jacobs will compete for time at the point guard slot and will also see minutes at the two-guard position. She too worked on fine-tuning her ball handling skills during the summer months, as well as, making her mid-range and outside shooting more consistent. Jacobs uses her skills to get in the lane and either score or dish the ball to an open teammate. By limiting her turnovers, she will find herself playing a lot of minutes as one of the more versatile players on the Jayhawk squad. 7
Kohn returns for her junior season looking to get back to her old form. The 5-9 Adrian, Mich., native, had a stellar freshman campaign, but was slowed during her sophomore season by various injuries. Kohn is one of the most competitive players on the Jayhawk squad and has worked hard in the offseason to not only return to form, but to be an improved version of herself. Kohn has the ability to knock down the three, but also is an excellent creator with the ball. She has a superior basketball IQ and will be looked upon to push the Jayhawks to their limits. Weddington was another Jayhawk who was able to provide good defense and solid rebounding on the block. She finished the season with a string of valuable performances, helping the Jayhawks defeat Nebraska in the Big 12 Championship opening round and also in knocking off Evansville in the WNIT. With the confidence gained from her late season performances, coupled with improvement in her strength and endurance, Weddington again figures prominently in KU s plans for its inside game in With help from newly aquired Jayhawk assistant coach Tamika Raymond, Weddington is ready for a breakout season. Another junior post player looking for court time is Feickert. The Goodrich, N.D., native, has some catching up to do after spending part of the summer in Spain studying abroad, but she provides the Jayhawks a good shooter in the high post and is also a good position defender. Feickert is another Kansas player who possesses a high basketball IQ. That combined with her shooting range should help increase her role this season JAYHAWK OUTLOOK JAYHAWK SOPHOMORE CLASS NAME POS. HT. EXP. PTS. REB. Krysten Boogaard C 6-5 1L Nicollette Smith F 6-2 1L Both members of the Kansas sophomore class managed to make a large impact in their freshmen seasons. Boogaard, who plays center for the Jayhawks, was named to the Big 12 All-Rookie team after averaging 9.4 points per game to go along with 5.6 rebounds. She also led KU with 36 blocks in Boogaard developed over the season, starting the year out coming off the bench and then closing the season with starting 21 of the last 22 games. The Regina, Saskatchewan, native, tallied four double-doubles, while posting 20 or more points on three occasions. Boogaard spent part of her summer playing on the Canadian Women s National Development Team in Beijing, China. She gained valuable international playing experience and is expected to start where she left off in her first season with the Jayhawks. In order to solidify her place as one of the premier post players in the Big 12 Conference, Boogaard will be expected to play with more consistency. With her added strength and maturity gained in the offseason, she will be counted on as a go-to player for Kansas in Fellow sophomore Nicollette Smith also made a splash in her debut season and has an exciting future in a Jayhawk uniform. Smith, a Tulsa, Okla., native opened the season posting 19 points and 10 rebounds off the bench on her way to garnering Big 12 Rookie of the Week honors. 8
Smith was Kansas top outside threat last season and will again be asked to score from beyond the arc. However, in the Jayhawks will look for more scoring from her at the high post. Smith was one of the Jayhawks top post defenders last season and that is a role the coaches expect her to continue to build upon. Becoming a well-balanced threat each and every time she steps on the court, Smith is expected to figure prominently into the KU game plan this season. JAYHAWK FRESHMAN CLASS NAME POS. HT. EXP. Angel Goodrich G 5-4 HS Aishah Sutherland F 6-2 HS Two exciting additions join the Jayhawk squad for the season in guard Angel Goodrich and forward Aishah Sutherland. Goodrich, who hails from Tahlequah, Okla., arrives in Lawrence as one of the highest ranking recruits to sign with the Jayhawks. The 5-foot-4 point guard led her Sequoyah High School team to three state titles in her four years and was the 2007 Oklahoma Gatorade Player of the Year. Goodrich was one of 20 players named to the WBCA/ State Farm High School All-America Team and was selected to play in the 2008 WBCA State Farm All-America game at last year s women s Final Four in Tampa, Fla. Goodrich led her Red team to a win, collecting seven points in the outing. A masterful playmaker, Goodrich is expected to play a significant role with the Jayhawks early in her career. Not only is she more than capable of running the team as an JAYHAWK OUTLOOK extension of Henrickson, but she is also able to get her own points. Sutherland arrives in Lawrence from Perris, Calif., as an athletic player who can also step up and hit the outside shot. The 6-foot-2 forward can get up and touch the rim, but has the finesse to knock down the three or drive to the hole. Adjusting to the speed and strength of the college game will be a process for Sutherland, but she is eager and ready to make an impact sooner rather than later for Kansas. A challenging schedule awaits the Kansas women s basketball team. Early games versus Big Ten contender Iowa, 2008 WNIT Champion Marquette and Pac-10 power UCLA will provide for a sturdy test in non-conference action. KU s non-conference slate will attempt to provide solid preparation for what s in store for the Jayhawks when they enter Big 12 Conference play. Following up a season that saw 11 of the 12 teams selected for postseason play, the conference is more elite than ever before. Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, Baylor, Nebraska, Iowa State, Texas and Kansas State each advanced to the 2008 NCAA Tournament and Kansas is making plans to join them in Kansas has scorers, rebounders, penetrators, passers, defenders and shooters. Everything is in place for Henrickson and her Jayhawks to move to the next level. Kansas Women s Basketball is ready to be back where it belongs. 9
