S-A-I-N-T JOSEPH S The corporate title of Saint Joseph s University, which has been in place since Saint Joseph s was granted university status by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1979, is now the public title of the institution for all aspects of its operations. Previously, the abbreviation of St. Joseph s University was permitted in a number of alumni and athletic contexts. According to the most recent edition of the Higher Education Directory, there are at least nine recognized "St. Joseph's" among the nation's colleges and universities. Only one of them-saint Joseph's University, Philadelphia-is a university-level, Master's I, NCAA Division I institution. Hawks has served as the nickname for Saint Joseph's athletic teams since The idea for The Hawk, as mascot, was originated by Jim Brennan during the season. Brennan, an exmarine and SJU cheerleader, at first wanted to secure an actual hawk, but later switched to the costume idea. The student government raised the 120 dollars needed to buy the initial costume, which Brennan donned for three years. He made his debut as the Hawk on January 4, 1956, a win over La Salle at the Palestra. The Hawk, who was present at most women s basketball games, became a main-stay in Since then, eight SJU students have donned it. It has been selected as the nation's top mascot by Sports Illustrated, Street & Smith Basketball Yearbook and ESPN College Basketball magazine. Eastern Basketball tabbed The Hawk as the Atlantic 10 Conference's best mascot as well. In January 2001, The Sporting News named The Hawk the Nation's Best Mascot in its Best of College Basketball issue. Saint Joseph s sophomore Kevin Hensler dons the costume for every women s game. FOREIGN AFFAIR The Hawks have been very effective at attracting talented international players to SJU. Presently, the Crimson and Gray have two foreign players - seniors Whitney Ffrench (Nova Scotia, Canada) and Zoya Pavlovskaya (St. Petersburg, Russia) - on their roster. Overall, nine international players have worn the Crimson and Gray. The others are Alix Burns England ( ), Megan Compain New Zealand ( ), Jana Lichnerova Slovakia ( ), Barbora Kuklova Slovakia ( ), Susan Moran Ireland ( ), Irina Krasnoshiok Moldova ( ) and Amra Mehmedic ( ). HEART OF A HAWK In addition to athletics and academics, community service has long been one of the traditions of the Saint Joseph s University women s basketball program. The Heart of a Hawk program is the team s way of giving back to the community. Each student athlete is required to complete a minimum of 10 hours of community service each semester. STREAKING UP AND DOWN THE HARDWOOD The following is a look at Saint Joseph s current hot and cold streaks heading into today s game. HOT Jenna Loschiavo Coming off a career-tying game at Virginia Commonwealth University in which the sophomore scored 13 points, including three from behind the arc.
