5 ESPN GameDAy Experience When California welcomed UCLA to Haas Pavilion last March, the game was televised nationally on ESPN, and the ESPN Gameday crew came out to Berkeley for the day. It was the first time Gameday was in Berkeley for either basketball or football. The Golden Bears hosted such ESPN personalities as Bob Knight, Digger Phelps and Jay Bilas. Cal fans filled Haas Pavilion to greet the Gameday crew when the doors to Haas opened at 6 a.m. that morning, prior to the beginning of the filming of the broadcast. 6 Th e University of California Simply the best There is no other way to aptly describe America s top public university. There is no other way to describe one of the elite academic settings in the world especially one that also includes one of America s most successful athletic departments. Cal attracts what many believe to be the finest applicant pool in the United States. The university features a diverse student body population. The University of California offers 351 degree programs, and 35 of the school s 36 graduate programs are ranked among America s Top 10. 10 Berkeley a n d t h e Bay Ar e a BERKELEY B erkeley is a part of the San Francisco Bay Area major metropolitan area of approximately 7.2 million people. The region is one of the most beautiful in the world and includes the major cities of San Francisco and Oakland, as well as Berkeley, home of the world-renowned University of California. Just south are San Jose and the Silicon Valley, home to many of the world s high-tech companies. The Bay Area also lies within easy driving distance of the high Sierra resorts of Lake Tahoe and Yosemite, the Monterey/Carmel peninsula, the world famous Napa wine country and the spectacular Mendocino Coast. Everyone knows San Francisco, a.k.a. The City, from the numerous photographs, movies and television shows that capture its magic and beauty. It is a city built on a series of more than 40 hills, offering panoramic views of every kind. The hub of a ninecounty complex and the financial and insurance capital of the world, San Francisco has a resident population of just over 800,000 and is situated on a 46.7 square mile peninsula bounded on OAKLAND the west by the Pacific Ocean, the north by the Golden Gate strait, and from north to east by the San Francisco Bay. San Francisco has been named the world s top city twice and the top city in the U.S. in 18 of the last 19 years by Condé Nast Traveler. The San Francisco Bay is spanned by two landmarks, the Golden Gate and San Francisco-Oakland Bay bridges, and graced by four islands: Alcatraz, Angel, Yerba Buena and Treasure. The area is easily navigated by car, BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit), bus or ferry, making it easily accessible to all. Andrew Bailey Top Cities IN THE WORLD 1. Sydney, Australia 2. 11 SAN FRANCISCO Frank Gore Located across the Bay Bridge from San Francisco, Oakland is a city of over 400,000, jam-packed with exciting attractions, stimulating arts and an ideal climate. Oakland s charm exceeds its man-made wonders, as its tumbling hills, vast forests, hiking and riding trails, beautiful lakes and numerous parks provide a natural escape for those who prefer nature over an urban environment. Berkeley, just a 12-mile drive from San Francisco, is situated on 17.7 square miles with a population of just under 103,000 people. A study in contrasts, Berkeley is a small town with a big city character. With its world-renowned university, global population and rich diversity of cultural arts, Berkeley reflects and affects the rest of the country. YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK Sports fans can see it all in the Bay Area - professional football (San Francisco 49ers, Oakland Raiders), professional basketball (Golden State Warriors), professional baseball (San Francisco Giants, Oakland Athletics), professional hockey (San Jose Sharks) and outstanding collegiate competition (six Division I schools). Sources: S.F. Convention and Visitors Bureau, Oakland Convention and Visitors Authority, Berkeley Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the California Trade and Commerce Agency. SIMPly THE BEST Money magazine chose San Francisco as the best place to live among the 300 biggest U.S. metropolitan areas. Forbes.com has ranked San Francisco one of America s best cities for the outdoors for each of the past two years while American College of Sports Medicine has consistently placed San Francisco among the nation s Top 5 in fitness among the most populous cities. Readers of Travel + Leisure magazine selected San Francisco as their favorite city in 2008 for its noteworthy neighborhoods. San Francisco is rated the No. 1 city in the U.S. and the No. 2 city in the world by Condé Nast Traveler (October 2008). CalBears.com California Golden Bears Men's Basketball 11
12 Cal in t h e NBA Jason Kidd Francisco Elson Leon Powe Ryan Anderson In April of 2008, Ryan Anderson and DeVon Hardin became the latest Golden Bears to be drafted by the NBA. Anderson became Cal s ninth firstround pick, going to the New Jersey Nets at No. 21, while Hardin was taken in the second round by Seattle. Among those former Bears currently in the league are two-time Olympic gold medalist Jason Kidd of the Dallas Mavericks and Leon Powe, who won a world championship with the Boston Celtics in 2008, before signing with the Cleveland Cavaliers following the campaign. Overall, five Cal players have gone in the top 10 selections, starting with center Darrall Imhoff, a member of the Bears 1960 NCAA championship team who went to the New York Knicks with the third pick. The others are multi-time All-Star Kevin Johnson (seventh, 1987), Kidd (second, 1994), Lamond Murray (seventh, 1994) and Shareef Abdur-Rahim (third, 1996). 16 Ac a d e m i c Achievement ACADEMIC GAME PLAN Comprehensive Program Focuses on Golden Bear Academic Achievement On the court, Golden Bears compete against the best that the NCAA has to offer. In the classroom, Cal student-athletes also challenge themselves on a daily basis, working with some of the brightest minds in the country at the nation s No. 1 public university. For the basketball program, assistant coach Travis De- Cuire oversees the academic progress for the Cal team, ensuring that players strive to excel as much in their educational setting as they do in athletics. In addition, all players meet with academic advisor and former Golden Bear basketball player Cassidy Raher on a weekly basis to review coursework and assignments throughout the year. Centrally located in the Cesar Chavez Student Center, the program provides a spacious and comfortable area for quiet study, individual classrooms for tutorials, and a computer lab for word processing and required course work. Tutorial Program The tutorial program promotes and enhances students academics skills and progress by providing individual tutoring, group workshops, study groups, credit courses and intensive special programs. The Athletic Study Center has between tutors on staff per semester to guarantee that students receive the best possible support. Tutorial sessions are offered at night to enable student-athletes to receive help after practices when they have more time to devote to studying. Advising Programs The advising programs offer a broad range of services to meet the unique needs of Cal s student-athletes, which include assistance in understanding and complying with university, college and NCAA requirements, the development of time management skills and the resolution of personal issues unique to student-athletes. 16 California Golden Bears Men's Basketball CalBears.com
17 St r e n g t h & Co n d i t i o n i n g Cal basketball s physical development program is designed to improve and develop the physical qualities that are specific to basketball. Programs are tailored for each student-athlete based on position, physical profile and style of play. Training is a year-round process that not only prepares players for the upcoming season, but also provides development throughout their careers at Cal. The year is broken down into training phases that build upon each other and provide optimal progress without the threat of burnout. Each student-athlete s progress is monitored, recorded and assessed daily in order to ensure that goals are achieved. Equally as important, the intense training environment creates an atmosphere that develops teamwork and cohesiveness well before the season begins each fall. For us, it s about creating a common sacrifice. We have a lot of individuals, but once they re here, that becomes their commonality. We have created a high level of expectations and communication within the men s basketball team. During 7 a.m. workouts over the summer, players had to come in early and function at a high level as a group. The bond that is created and the common sacrifice that comes along with that are the building blocks of bringing them together as a championship team. The work that they re doing is not easy work; it s not pretty. It s a difficult opportunity for them to come together as a group. That s when groups figure it out. When everything is good and it s easy, anybody can get through that. You don t need to rely on each other for that. When it s difficult, and there s a common expectation, that s when teams have to bond, problem solve and be a unit. That s the philosophy behind the demands we put on them, particularly over the summer. Mike Blasquez, Head Strength & Conditioning Coach CalBears.com California Golden Bears Men's Basketball 17

19 Prominent Media Exposure Being located in the nation s sixth-largest media market means California basketball plays its games on one of the largest stages in the country. Included within the borders of the Pacific-10 Conference are six of America s top 25 television markets and some of the most prominent daily newspapers in the United States. In addition, the Bears receive regular newspaper coverage throughout the Bay Area, with national print media also focusing their attention on the team.
