2 ABOUT CITY YEAR City Year is an education organization fueled by national service that partners with urban public schools in high-poverty communities to help keep students in school and on track to graduate. City Year AmeriCorps members commit to a year of full-time service in schools, where they tutor students one-onone, provide support in classrooms and organize school-wide initiatives to improve school culture. Founded in Boston in 1988, City Year works in 27 communities across the United States and has international affiliates in London, Birmingham and Manchester, England and Johannesburg, South Africa. WHO WE SERVE In high-poverty communities, too many students face obstacles that interfere with their ability to get to school every day, ready and able to learn. These students need extra support to help them overcome challenges they re facing. City Year AmeriCorps members serve where the need is greatest. Of the 292 schools we serve, half are among the lowest performing five percent in their state. WE RELY ON CITY YEAR TO HELP OUR SCHOOL TO FULFILL ITS VISION TO BE A FULL SERVICE COMMUNITY SCHOOL. CORPS MEMBERS SUPPORT US WITH ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE, FAMILY ENGAGEMENT, EXTENDED LEARNING, AND HOLISTIC HEALTH. Principal at Roxhill Elementary School HOW WE WORK PARTNER WITH PUBLIC SCHOOLS City Year helps bridge the gap between what students need and what schools are designed to deliver. City Year AmeriCorps members serve full-time, working side-by-side with teachers, before, during and after school. By serving in elementary and middle schools, we stick with students year after year, and become a consistent part of their school experience. City Year AmeriCorps members complete at least 1,700 hours of service each year. USE DATA TO PROVIDE TARGETED SUPPORT Research shows that students who are at the highest risk to drop out can be identified as early as sixth grade by three early warning indicators, the ABCs: poor attendance, behavior and course failure in math and English. AmeriCorps members provide individualized support to students who are falling behind, while monitoring the data in real-time so that when one student gets back on-track, we can shift our focus to other students who are struggling. TRAIN & DEPLOY TEAMS OF YOUNG PEOPLE City Year hires and trains diverse teams of young adults to give a year of full-time service in schools, and provides each one more than 300-hours of professional training every year. Each school where we serve has at least one team of 8 12 City Year AmeriCorps members, instantly increasing the ratio of adults to children in the building. That s good for students: they get more individualized attention and support, in and outside of class. It is also good for adults in the building, who have more time to collaborate and focus on the needs of the entire classroom and school. Only 1% of charities have received this distinction for eleven consecutive years, placing City Year among the most trustworthy nonprofits.

3 JOIN CITY YEAR FOR THE 14TH ANNUAL City Year Seattle/King County s annual fundraising gala, Ripples of Hope, celebrates the idealism and service of the AmeriCorps members serving in 10 of Seattle s under-served schools. This celebratory evening gathers together more than 600 prominent leaders from Seattle s business and nonprofit communities to network and engage with young emerging leaders who are making a difference in the lives of our students. Since Ripples of Hope began, the event has raised $3 million, helping City Year reach at-risk youth in southeast and southwest Seattle who need our service the most. This year, we aim raise more than $700,000 to support this critical service work. These critically needed funds directly translate to 30,000+ hours of service by City Year AmeriCorps members, including a full academic-year of targeted interventions for nearly 1,500 students at risk of dropping out.
