19 STRENGTH & CONDITIONING Cal basketball s physical development program is designed to improve and develop the physical qualities that are specific to basketball. Programs are tailored for each student-athlete based on position, physical profi le and style of play. Training is a year-round process that not only prepares players for the upcoming season, but also provides development throughout their careers at Cal. The year is broken down into training phases that build upon each other and provide optimal progress without the threat of burnout. Each student-athlete s progress is monitored, recorded and assessed daily in order to ensure that goals are achieved. Equally as important, the intense training environment creates an atmosphere that develops teamwork and cohesiveness well before the season begins each fall. For us, it s about creating a common sacrifi ce. We have a lot of individuals, but once they re here, that becomes their commonality. We have created a high level of expectations and communication within the men s basketball team. During 7 a.m. workouts over the summer, players had to come in early and function at a high level as a group. The bond that is created and the common sacrifi ce that comes along with that are the building blocks of bringing them together as a championship team. The work that they re doing is not easy work; it s not pretty. It s a diffi cult opportunity for them to come together as a group. That s when groups fi gure it out. When everything is good and it s easy, anybody can get through that. You don t need to rely on each other for that. When it s diffi cult, and there s a common expectation, that s when teams have to bond, problem solve and be a unit. That s the philosophy behind the demands we put on them, particularly over the summer. Mike Blasquez, Head Strength & Conditioning Coach CALBEARS.COM CALIFORNIA GOLDEN BEARS MEN S BASKETBALL MEDIA GUIDE 19
