I am truly honored to be the head basketball coach at Hutto High School. My coaching staff and I have the wonderful opportunity to work with some outstanding young men on a daily basis. I believe we have a tremendous responsibility to try to do all we can to help these your men become the best they are capable of becoming both on and off the court. This is a responsibility that our coaching staff takes very seriously. If someone were to ask me what the mission statement of the Team Hutto Basketball program was, I would state it something like this: We want to win or perform to our potential with good kids who graduate, and through these experiences with our basketball program are better prepared for life after high school. For this to happen, I believe our coaching staff must set high standards for our players and try to instill in them some very important values along the way. It s important to understand that athletics is designed to accommodate students who have the ability and emotional stability to handle competition. Students are not obligated to take part in athletics, nor is it required for graduation. Being a member of an athletic team is a privilege. It is not a right. Since it is a privilege, the coach has the authority to revoke the privilege when rules are not followed or athletic performance is not up to standard. My expectations for our basketball players are high. Our players will be held to a higher standard than that of the average student. I want our players to have their priorities in order. Players should conduct themselves with class both on and off the court. They should always represent their team, their school, and their family in a positive manner. All players should understand that no individual is bigger than the team. Our team objectives are very simple. We want to play hard, play smart, and play together. We may not win every game, but always want to give a perfect winning effort. I love coaching basketball. Through basketball, I have been blessed in so many ways. I think it is the greatest team sport in the world. I think participation in competitive team sports give its participants a leg up in life, as there are so many great parallels one can draw with life itself. These experiences are often great stages for dealing with adversity, and being able to handle success. It is my hope that all players and managers in our basketball program walk away from here a better person. Sincerely, Ignatius Caraway Head Boys Basketball Coach Team Hutto

THE TWELVE COMMANDMENTS OF TEAM HUTTO TO STAY HERE 1. BE COMMITTED TO YOUR ACADEMICS Make a plan. Get a diploma. Go to class every day. Be on time. Sit up Front. Take good notes. Do all extra work possible. Plan ahead and talk to your teacher when we travel or you are having a problem. 2. BE COMMITTED TO HAVING CLASS Treat teachers, support staff, custodians, and all you meet with respect. Treat other people the way you want to be treated. Moody people are rude. Remember to smile, to say please, thank you, yes sir, and yes ma am, and give people the benefit of the doubt. 3. BE COMMITTED TO DOING THE RIGHT THING We have plenty of school rules. Know them. Realize if you just try to do the right thing you will be OK. Try to do the nest right thing right and you are as close to perfect as any person can be. 4. BE COMMITTED TO THE PROGRAM We realize that our players live in a fish bowl at Hutto. Every word and action will be watched. Our program reputation provides many opportunities yet brings many responsibilities. We must be committed to build on the tradition of our program and respect those that have gone before us and paid the price to build the program. TO PLAY HERE 1. BE COMMITTED TO HARD WORK Our program is built on the concept that hard work pays off. We believe that we work harder than anyone else and because of that we always deserve to win. There is a reason we are the best. We work at it. 2. BE COMMITTED TO BECOMING A SMART PLAYER Our players must be ready to learn. We believe we work smarter than anyone else. We must develop players who understand the game. Our players must be good listeners and learn by watching. We must make good decisions. We must play with poise. We prepare mentally for practice and games. 3. BE COMMITTED TO OUR TEAM ATTITUDE CONCEPT We must have players who believe in our team concept. Our program is built on the concept that the team/program is bigger than any one player. We need unselfish players. 4. BE COMMITTED TO WINNING ATTITUDE Our players must be committed to winning but understand we don t measure our success by wins alone. Each time we play we evaluate ourselves on reaching our potential. The test for our team is to play against the game not just our opponent. We never quit. We always are looking for a way to win. TO WIN HERE 1. BELIEVE IN OUR SYSTEM Commit yourself to our philosophy, to our system of play. Be a sponge and soak up the concepts of how we play. Learn your role. Realize you chose to be here. Be a leader. Lead by example. 2. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF Play with confidence. Think positive. Realize you are a great player in a great program. Don t ever forget the importance of the shell around the team. Be a friend. We understand that we are all different. Be tolerant of teammates and others. 3. BELIEVE IN YOUR TEAMMATES Understand that your teammates are trying. Trying to achieve the same goal. 4. BELIEVE IN YOUR COACHES Understand that your coaches are trying to help make you better people and players. Ask questions. Don t whine and complain. Learn to take tough coaching. You must believe that the coaches are doing what they think is right for the team and you.

I WILL DRESS APPROPRIATELY Most everyone on campus and a lot of off campus people will know you are a Hutto basketball player. The image you project will be a reflection on all of us. Do not dress to draw attention to yourself. Dress properly. REMEMBER YOU NEVER GET THE CHANCE TO MAKE A SECOND IMPRESSION. 7. 7 Attending practice is a crucial part of a team's success and development. Players and parents should be ready to make the four month commitment before the competitive season begins. 1. Drama Rule If an is sent to any coach you will owe 50 jump squats and 3 horses for time. 2 nd 100 jump squats and 6 horses and placed on contract. 3 rd one game suspension. 4 th dismissed from the team. 2. Practice Attendance All practices are mandatory. Un-excused absence and you re playing time will be in jeopardy. Whether an absence is excused or un-excused will be left to the coach's discretion. If a player absolutely must miss practice he should discuss the matter with his coach ahead of time whenever possible. If a player should miss practice due to illness, injury, or family matter, he should bring a note signed by her parents explaining the situation to his coach as soon as possible. This does not excuse the absence, but will assist the coach in making a determination. NOTE: If you miss an in-season practice or a meeting for ANY reason (any practice between October 28 and March 13), the student athlete must call, text, Remind 101 reply or , our GYM office at or before practice that day or running will be doubled. REASON VS EXCUSE 3. Unexcused Absences The following consequences apply for unexcused absences. a) If you are a starter, you will not start. b) If you are a role player, it will cost you playing time. c) If you have followed 3(b), then you will owe 4 horses and if you did not follow rule 3(b), then you will owe 8 horses and you will not participate in one quarter of the next game. d) Additional un-excused absences will put a player's participation privileges in jeopardy. 4. Punctuality Players should be dressed, stretched, and ready to workout 30 minutes before practice starts. Times may vary as is necessary to accommodate gym scheduling etc. Players will be notified of any changes at the beginning of each practice week. The coaching staff will make every effort possible to minimize these changes, but occasionally they are inevitable. Players must make the effort to ensure they are aware of the weekly schedule. Players not present and prepared at the designated practice times will be required to run 1 horse for every minute he is late. More than one occasion of showing up late will result in an unexcused absence and the loss of playing time. 5. Language Be respectful of your teammates and coaches. No name calling, harsh criticism, foul language, or rude comments will be tolerated. If this rule is unclear to a player he should discuss his questions with his coach. Talking while the coach is instructing is disrespectful and will not be tolerated. Continual violations of the rule will result in dismissal from practice. If a player is asked to leave practice he will be counted absent thus jeopardizing participation and travel privileges. 6. Preparation Come prepared and ready to practice. Your coaches will show up every day with a practice preparation and ready to teach, and we expect our players to come and give us 100%. There will be a lot of new things to go over especially at the start of the season, and the only way we as a team will benefit is to have committed, hardworking individuals showing up, willing and ready to participate. 7. Coachability If you cannot or will not be coached, you will be moved to J.V. or dismissed from the team. The goals of the team will be considered before the individual goals of any individual player. 8. Technical Fouls If a player received a technical foul during a game for bad judgment, (protesting a call, slamming ball on the floor, etc.), that player will be pulled from the game and depending on the action which causes the technical, the player may not return to the game and will not be able to play in the next game until the time of technical foul.

a. NOTE: IF A PLAYER RECEIVES A TECHNICAL DUE TO A GAME RULE VIOLATION AFTER THE TEAM HAS RECEIVED A WARNING, THE ABOVE DOES NOT APPLY. b. Second Technical - If same player gets a 2nd technical for bad judgment, that player will not be allowed to play in the next 2 contest. If the player receives another technical for bad judgment, that player will be placed on J.V. (if on Varsity) or placed in offseason (if on J. V.) 9. ISS / Detention Consequences If a player is found to be assigned the following disciplinary actions such as ISS, after school detention, engage in fighting, truancy from school or practice, hazing, or out of school suspension 1 st Offense 2 nd Offense 3 rd Offense 25 sets of lines ALL DOUBLED 10 HOURS OF BLEACHERS 10 horse s 10 sweet sixteen s 3 eggs 1 HIPPO MILE Half Game suspension 1 GAME SUSPENSION 2 GAME SUSPENSION /and or Dismissal from team 10. Athletic Code of Conduct We will also adhere to the athletic code of conduct.

ALL COMMUNICATION DEVICES WILL NOT BE ALLOWED ON UNTIL AFTER THE GAME. VIOLATION OF THIS RULE WILL RESULT IN THE ENTIRE TEAM RUNNING 1 MOUNTAIN. Game Day Dress Code Requirements Varsity o HOME GAMES: T-SHIRTS TO TEAM DRESS o AWAY GAMES: DRESS for Success! NO JEANS. Plan to wear KHAKI pants, ties, and DRESS shoes (no athletic shoes). Jr. Varsity o same as varsity (see above) 9th Grade o same as varsity (see above) If you fail follow the rules, team dress code will change to dress shirt and ties FOR THE ENTIRE SEASON. PARENTS WILL NEED TO BRING TEAM DRESS BEFORE 10 a.m. The player who fails to dress up will run 5 horses. If the same player fails to dress up a second time they will not be allowed to TRAVEL AND PLAY in the next game. Eligibility Requirements Academic eligibility is checked every week on Monday. If a student is failing, his play time will be decreased, so that the team will get used to playing without him when six week grades come out. If the student raises his grade during the next week, his play time will still be shared during that period of time until the coach speaks with teacher of failing course or until the student next grade check. The student will be permitted to compete in the following two weeks. There are no exceptions to this rule. We the coaches are here to insure that our students are successful not only on the playing field, but in the classrooms also. If a student's name appears on the ineligible list, he is still expected to participate in practice. Players will be required to submit a grade check on the first week of practice. Grades may be used in determining basketball Team status. If a student shows a grade of less than a C and is ineligible for basketball due to failing the past six weeks, they may be sent to off-season and not allowed to play basketball. He will be required to meet with his teacher and determine a plan to bring that grade up as soon as possible. He can also be required to attend daily study hall during lunch in the computer lab until the grade is up to the required minimum of C. Travel Policy We have several road games this season. The following rules have been instated this year (in addition to the traveling guidelines set by the district) to ensure safety and team order. 1. Team travel is a privilege, not a right. Player must be academically and athletically eligible. Grades, behavior, and the coaching staff will determine whether a player travels with the team. 2. Attendance at practice is mandatory. Un-excused absences will jeopardize travel privileges. 3. Traveling with the team to and from games is required, (We travel as a Team) 4. If at any time while traveling to or from a game a player fails to use common sense and chooses to act in a way that is illegal or irresponsible to himself, his coach, his school, or his team, his traveling and participation privileges will be in jeopardy.

Drug/Alcohol Policy Any participation in illegal activity during the season will result in automatic dismissal from the basketball program. A player is not permitted to drink alcohol or use illegal drugs or be in the presence of anyone using illegal substances during the season. You are expected to live and act as responsible role models for the students of Hutto High. If a player finds himself in a situation where he is not sure of what actions to take he should make the following considerations: 1. I will get caught. Trust me the coach always finds out. 2. Is it worth the trouble I will cause myself and my family? 3. Is it worth giving up basketball for? 4. Is it worth letting down my teammates for? Level 1: Drinking Alcohol/Tobacco during the season will not be tolerated. If alcohol is important to you, we do not want you to be associated with this basketball program. If you know that your teammates are drinking and do not tell them you disapprove, YOU are as GUILTY as they are. Don t be guilty by association. 1 st Offense 2 nd Offense 25 sets of lines ALL DOUBLED 10 horse s 10 sweet sixteen s 3 eggs 1 HIPPO MILE One Game suspension 2 GAME SUSPENSION and or Dismissal from team Per Athletic Code Level 2 and 3 as per athletic Code.
