Dear Players and Parents: Welcome and congratulations on becoming a member of the Carolina Wolves Organization! We are delighted to have your child as one of our special players. As you may know, AAU and YBOA basketball are both nationwide organizations formed to have the best youth basketball players from around the country. These players compete against others locally, regionally and nationally. Because of the great talent around the country, we search for the best players we can find for each of our age groups ranging from ages 9 to 17. However, as we select our players, we look for more than just great talent. It is important to have players that; want to compete on a higher level; players that put as much effort in school as they do on the court; players that are coachable and players that have parents that support their child s dedication to the game. The mission of the Carolina Wolves is to bring an Elite Basketball Program to the Carolinas and develop our players into not only outstanding basketball players but outstanding and responsible young men. Getting our players the experience and tools necessary to play D1 basketball and excel in their academics is our ultimate goal. We welcome you to join us on our journey. We also strive to provide young men and females the opportunity to learn and enjoy the game of basketball at a highly competitive level. We offer a program, which will develop and improve individual as well as team skills, promote good sportsmanship, team spirit, and encourage club loyalty. Our goal is to assemble basketball teams with players who can compete and be recognized as the best in the nation. We will train your child to become a complete basketball player and prepare them to further their basketball careers. The club demands a high degree of ethical conduct by all its coaches, players, volunteers, and parents so that it provides a good example for the community, opponents, and its participants, thus helping their growth to adulthood. By accomplishing these goals, the Carolina Wolves will provide our players with additional exposure to the game of basketball thereby enhancing their opportunity to play at the junior high and high school level or beyond. This level of basketball for the players requires practicing, traveling, commitment and most importantly, lots of enjoyment and love of the game. The commitment of the parents includes time, traveling, support both emotionally and financially, understanding and teamwork. We look forward to another great year of Carolina Wolves basketball. Sincerely, Carolina Wolves Directors 2

Expectations and Commitment The Carolina Wolves has high standards for everyone involved in the organization; it is our goal to always strive to be the best. PLAYERS - All Carolina Wolves players must demonstrate a commitment to the game of basketball through teamwork, hustle, intensity, and a positive attitude. All players are expected to follow the directions and guidance provided by team coaches. Demonstrate behavior that leaves a positive impression when representing the Carolina Wolves Organization. Show no disrespect towards game officials, fans, other athletes, or coaches. Do not use profanity, or ethnic or racial slurs. Do not strike or otherwise physically abuse other athletes. Never exhibit unsportsmanlike conduct. COACHES All Carolina Wolves coaches are selected based on their ability to teach fundamental skills and clearly communicate with the athletes, along with a past history of proven coaching success. Coaches must: 1. Be able to convey the ideas and concepts of basketball fundamentals in terms clearly understandable to the players. 2. Uphold the highest standards of integrity and sportsmanship. 3. Have a past record of successful coaching. 4. Set a positive example for the players. 5. Refrain for using alcohol or tobacco products in the presence of players at anytime. 6. Abstain from any and all unsportsmanlike conduct. 7. Be available as needed for practices and games. PARENTS Carolina Wolves parents must build up and support their player, other team members, and parents of other team members. Parents must possess high moral principals, be honest and fair, and set a superlative example for others. Parents are also responsible for providing suitable arrangements for the lodging, meals, and transportation of their player to practices, camps, and tournaments. Parents are expected to abstain from unprofessional conduct such as: disrespect toward or harassment of game officials, fans athletes, or coaches; ethnic or racial slurs; and unsportsmanlike conduct. We expect parents to support each player and team. 3

Goals and Objectives 1. Offer a program that focuses on basketball skills development, team play, education, and positive team activities. Provide team players with an opportunity to have fun! 2. To be financially sound and provide affordable membership to all those who are willing and able to make a commitment to our organization. 3. Establish our teams as the best in the State, and build a program on par with the D1 National Level AAU teams. 4. Provide coaching of the highest quality available and use other resources that enhance player development. 5. Be an example of class and quality, conducting ourselves in an honorable and sportsmanlike manner. 6. Strive to seek out the strongest competition. Strong competition helps to identify weaknesses in order to improve them. 7. To be a positive force in the local community by seeking out opportunities for community service, awareness, and fund-raisers. It will be the responsibility of the coaches to develop the team members ' individual character, physical skills, and knowledge of the game of basketball. At its best, basketball is a team game. Success is built on disciplined practice which in turn leads to success in games. Carolina Wolves coaches will be responsible for dealing with improper behavior or violations of club guidelines. All coaches will share common beliefs about teaching of fundamental concepts, therefore providing a continuous and proper learning environment. Carolina Wolves coaches will meet regularly to discuss team philosophy and strategy. 4

Selection Process Players selected to participate with the Carolina Wolves are young men who are focused on improving their skills and working hard to be the best they can be. We look for talented and gifted players from the ages of yrs old. We look for players, parents and volunteers who are interested in joining the top AAU program and boys travel team in the state. We strive to develop and produce a deep and talented roster of kids who we believe have what it takes to bring their games and the Carolina Wolves to the next level. Practice &Tournaments It is up to each Head Coach to produce a schedule of practices and proposed tournaments as early as possible. The expectation is that the players and parents will be able to eliminate most scheduling conflicts, if provided adequate time to make adjustments. Missing practices or games can negatively impact playing time. If a conflict does exist, it is the player s responsibility to inform the Head Coach as soon as possible. To emphasize player responsibility, we do not want parents to call on behalf of their child. Practice Practice for most Carolina Wolves teams will begin in February and teams will initially practice at least twice a week. The practice schedule may increase later in the summer to prepare for the national championships. Parents and players are asked to keep this in mind as they plan summer vacations. Practices are in some cases more important that the games, players are expected to learn the offensive and defensive systems during these times, so that game coaching can reinforce concepts and procedures that have been taught. Tournaments Carolina Wolves teams travel tournaments usually begin in March and continue up until August. Playing Time Carolina Wolves and travel team basketball in general is highly competitive. The Carolina Wolves do not adhere to a minimum or guaranteed amount of playing time for any player. Each player will be viewed as a contributing member of the team. The players will be challenged and evaluated during practice sessions. Based on practice and other factors (discipline, grades, etc.) players will be provided opportunities during game situations to display their basketball skills. Playing time will generally be based on attendance, ability, work ethic, coachabiliy and game situation. Player/Parent Commitment Participation in the Carolina Wolves program requires time, effort, financial resources and a strong commitment to the organization. It is critical that each coach, player and parent understands that participation in this program is voluntary. Our coaching staff takes a good portion of their time and dedicates it to the children in our organization. In return we ask that players and parents be fully committed to the organization and the player s and teams personal development. We expect each player and parent to be dedicated and available for all scheduled Carolina Wolves team events (games, practices, fundraisers, meetings, etc.). Everyone s participation is important to the success of our children and the organization. 6

Financial Commitment Carolina Wolves teams will be scheduled to play a lot of basketball, which requires commitment from both the parents and players. We are a non-profit organization that provides a unique opportunity for your child. Scholarships may be available for certain circumstances of financial hardship, but the family must apply and be qualified to receive a scholarship. The following table lists the estimated player fees for each team. These fees do not include meals, but does include practice facility rental fees, uniform costs, player AAU/YBOA/USBA membership insurance fees, and tournament registration fees ($200-$300 per). These fees are non-refundable and not pro-rated. Team Estimated Cost Per Player 17U Sponsored 16U $ U-15U $ U $ ** If your child travels to an out-of-town tournament without you, expect to send $40-$50 with them just to cover meals. The costs to participate in National tournaments are also separate. These additional costs will be divided evenly among all members of the team. Each players cost to participate in National Tournaments will be determined closer to that date. Please do not let the costs put you off. The Carolina Wolves believe that the training and experiences received through participation in our program, both on and off the court, is worth the investment and will greatly benefit your child. To defray some of the operational expenses, the Carolina Wolves will seek sponsors, host tournaments, and pursue fundraising opportunities. All players and parents are called upon to assist with fundraising and host tournament events, as these events are important sources of revenue for the organization and help keep membership fees at a minimum. Certified Checks or Money Orders should be made payable to : Carolina Wolves *Please note that team shoes, team socks and a backpack will be included in the registration fee. 7

Team Uniforms The Carolina Wolves team uniforms (game/practice) will remain the property of the Carolina Wolves. Uniforms will be issued prior to tournaments and turned back in afterwards. It is the player s responsibility to make sure that all uniforms are kept in good condition and are returned. An option for the parent to purchase new pieces will be available. Players should and will be required to take pride in their Carolina Wolves uniforms. Parental Participation Carolina Wolves parents must build up and support their player, other team members, and parents of other team members. Parent Participation Opportunities Carolina Wolves parents are openly encouraged to participate in our success. There are many areas where parents can contribute, whether skilled in basketball or not. All players and parents are expected to participate in the fund raising activities. Each player is required to raise a minimum amount of money each year. * Team Administrator Team administrators are an integral part of the Carolina Wolves overall operation. Each age group will have its own Team administrator. It is important that all parents are clear on the functions and responsibilities of the Team administrator: The team administrator will function as a liaison between the Head Coach and the parents of the team, and works closely with the Head Coach. There will be a Team administrator and assistant team administrator designated from volunteers, upon completion of the team roster. There will be scheduled Team/Administrator meetings. Each team member is expected to attend these meetings. Produce the team book, a single source of team information consisting of: 1. The Team roster (Name, position, height, uniform number, birthday, age, school, address, phone, , AAU#, parents) 2. Copy of birth certificate. 3. Copies of each players medical release form and insurance information. 4. Coordinates parent meetings. 5. Contacts other parents regarding practice and tournament schedules. 6. Coordinate team travel, secure hotel rooms, and communicate the information to the Players and Parents, ensuring that all timetables are kept. 7. Maintain spreadsheet of income and expenses. 8. Coordinates team fundraising efforts. 8

Participation Opportunities: Cont. 1. Statisticians - Game stats are an important part of developing players. Keeping stats helps to accurately track players in game performance. 2. Trainer - Anyone who has a basic background in first aid is welcome to volunteer for this position. Unfortunately, our players risk injury every time they step on the court. 3. Team videographer - Video tapes of games are an exceptional tool to aid the coach, players, and Carolina Wolves teams when game planning, teaching, and learning. 4. Fund Raising Committee - Parents who serve on this committee would carry out the teams current fund raising plan, and developing new methods for obtaining funds for the Carolina Wolves Organization. Assist team administrator. 9

Player s Code of Conduct In exchange for the opportunity of participating with the Carolina Wolves, I promise to: Complete my homework and studying when I should and to the best of my abilities. I will place academics before basketball. Treat everyone involved with our team with respect and courtesy at all times, both on and off the court. This includes teammates, coaches, parents, officials and opponents. Behavior destructive to the team, unsportsmanlike conduct, profanity, or behavior that demonstrates a lack of control will not be tolerated at practice or in games. Attend every practice and arrive at least 10 minutes before the scheduled start time, or notify a coach as to why I will be late or unable to attend. Unexcused absence from practice may affect playing time. Arrive at all games at least an hour before the scheduled start time, or notify a coach as to why I will be late or unable to attend. Listen closely and carefully to all coaches instructions. Try to the best of my ability to carry out all coaches requests during practices and games. Players will be constantly evaluated on their demonstration of coachability, effort, mental and physical toughness, loyalty to team, unselfishness, and the desire to improve their skills and the skills of their teammates. Focus on what the team is doing and work hard in practice to improve my skills and physical abilities. Work hard to develop good basketball habits by practicing with good form and effort. I understand that improving my individual skills will make a major contribution to the success of the team and organization. Practice good health habits. This includes getting 8 hours of sleep, eating breakfast, eating healthy foods, drinking plenty of water, limiting my intake of soda, and abstaining from the use of any illegal substances. Encourage my parents to be involved with my team in some capacity, because it s important to me. Remember that participating in sports is an opportunity to learn and have fun. 11 Team Rules Attend all practices and games and be on time unless excused by the coach. The coaches will have their Cell phones on them almost all of the time. But ALWAYS leave a message if no one can be reached! If a player misses a practice for an excused reason, they will still be missing important practice time and playing time for the next game could be decreased. If you are too sick or hurt to practice, you will (in most cases) be too sick or hurt to play in the next game. In extreme cases, there are possible exceptions. 1. Be respectful to all coaches, parents, managers, officials, players, and fans. Address coaches as Coach. 2. Put team success ahead of personal goals and preferences. 3. Be responsible for returning equipment. Players will be expected to pay for anything that they check out but fail to check in at the end of the season. 4. Not display negative feelings on the floor. No profanity or signs of disgust at an official's call. No negative emotions at any time. Players will be expected to maintain positive relationships with teammates, coaches, students, and teachers. Players will be expected to set positive examples in and out of school. 5. Not sit down during practice. Pay attention when a coach is talking. Listen to the coaches even if they are not talking directly to you. Players are expected to learn from their own mistakes and the mistakes made by teammates. 6. Pick up trash, towels, water bottles, and other equipment after every practice and game. 7. Practices are closed to everyone but the team. Players need to be focused on the team, not the stands. Any player that is not doing what the coach wants, and instead listening to people in the stands will be faced with discipline following the practice or game. 8. Wear shorts above the hips and tuck shirts in. 9. Play hard all of the time. Players must be willing to play defense, block out, take charges, and dive on the floor for loose balls. NEVER quit. 10. Practice at a level that will prepare the team to be successful in game situations. This means that everyone will be expected to practice with the same enthusiasm, intensity, and hard work that it will take to win games. 11. Win as a team and lose as a team. The team concept is extremely important for maximum success. 12. Play with winning character. Winning character is honesty, loyalty, respect, unselfishness, and class. * Penalties for breaking team policy will be determined by the coaching staff and if necessary the players parents. Penalties could include, but not limited to: 1) decreased playing time 2) team suspension and/or 3) team expulsion I,, have read and understand all team expectations and rules. I (player's name) understand the consequences of not following any team expectations or rules. Signature: Date: Parent Signature: Date: 11

Team Philosophy Team Program Philosophy The Carolina Wolves provide strict, diligent, positive, and progressive training and instruction. We encourage sportsmanship and build self-confidence by rewarding effort as well as productivity. We promote an open line of communication between the league president, league coaches, parents and players. We focus on player development by defining each players role as it pertains to the overall goals of the team. We want to make our teams as competitive as possible each time we take the court. Individual development of the players will not weight the teams overall goals for success. Competition Philosophy Each team will compete to win. Carolina Wolves coaches will coach to win. Each player will play a role in the overall success of their team. Whether that is through practice or through games, every player and parent must understand that the team comes first. We want to provide a place and a program where players can improve their skills and continue to get better regardless of their playing status. We want every Carolina Wolves team to compete in every aspect of the game at all times as the coaches feel the need but not according to the parent s opinion. Commitment Philosophy Academics and family will always come before basketball or any sport. In the Carolina Wolves program, our success will depend on loyalty from players and family. Divided interest in other programs will water down your productivity as it pertains to this organization. The Carolina Wolves put forth some of the most competitive boys travel teams in the state and we do so because of our consistency to building teams and commitment to our organization.
