1 ! Flying Fifteen International Australia Inc 54 th Australian Championship, hosted by Canberra Yacht Club 4 th - 8 th January 2016 A heavy overcast sky greeted the 5 strong fleet for the 54th Australian Flying Fifteen Championship held on Lake Burley Griffin, Canberra. The first race was won by Matt Owen & Andrew Reed in Deffcon1 (684) who started at the boat end and led at the first mark in variable shifting light 8 knot SE wind. Sue Thompson and Cam Taylor in Never Say Die (4007) and Nicole & Tracey Magyar jostled for second & third places, with Never Say Die prevailing. 2 The second race saw a stronger more consistent SE breeze, which around the middle shifted about 20 degrees. Deffcon1 again led from the first mark to finish. Craig Davidson & Robin Malpas in Super Snabb(657) strongly to finish ahead of Aussie Falcon (Dale Collings & Warren Slater). started in very overcast conditions in an 8 knot NE breeze. The fleet split into 2 groups to the first mark, the right side being favoured with 4007 being first at the top mark, followed by 4006, 972 (Sake - Ashley Smith & Adam Kingston). Defcon1 was a fair way back, but sailed a superb downwind leg to lead at the gate mark. The wind lightened on the second work and Defcon1 led at the top mark and maintained the lead to the shortened course finish, followed by Super Snabb and and Where the Bloody Hell are You (Rainey boys)third.a trying race for all competitors. 4 The fourth race was abandoned shortly after the start as there was a significant wind shift. The course was re-set and the race re-started. The first work was very tight racing throughout the fleet with Deffcon1 followed by Slightly FFirmer and Sake. On the ensuing run Deffcon1 widened the gap and then at the next 2 marks the Deffcon1 & Sake jostled each other, but Deffcon1 never surrendered the lead and went on to take her fourth straight win.
2 5 After three days of cold, heavy overcast and often rainy days, the sun appeared which raised the hopes of the sailors for a more consistent breeze. It was not to be. While a more southerly breeze than in previous races prompted the starter to set a shorter course at the bottom of the race course, the variable and shifting wind tested all sailors. The race was won by Matt Owen in Deffcon 1, after an excellent start, and he extended his winning streak in the series to four wins from four races. John Hanrahan sailing in The Wife s Ffault and John Tracey in Wings battled for second and third places. The fleet was well spread out in the lightish conditions. 6. Back to back races enabled the fleet to experience a similar race to the earlier one. Craig Davidson in Super Snabb sailed a superb race after an excellent start to head off Ashley Smith in Sake to take first place in a shortened course. Matt Owen recovered from a horror start to take third place. Again the fleet was spread out and the shifting winds tested the boats spinnaker techniques. 7. Craig Davidson in Super Snabb sailed another superb race to win comfortably from John Tracey and Matt Owen. Davidson extended his lead as the race progressed in quite variable and shifting conditions. However, the short course allowed for exciting finishes for those in the middle of the fleet. 8 was abandoned due to a lack of wind.
