The 11 players, with six on defense and five on offense, does not include three former defensive starters, linebackers Bill Hambrecht and Gian Villante and cornerback Le Var Starr, who missed the 2003 season finale because of injury but who will start in The returning starters from 2003 are: Offense WR Issac Irby LT Jed Prisby RT Willie Colon WR Brian Wolman QB Bobby Seck Defense LE Dan Garay NT Mickey Keene RE Stephen Bowen LB Cole Haley CB Prentice James SS Michael Momo Senior center Patrick O Brien is another 03 starter who was expected to start again in But his preseason
3 injury has placed his status for this week as questionable. RETURNING RECEIVING STATS: The Pride has lost 135 of its 230 receptions from last year to graduation and injury. The biggest losses were Ricky Bryant, who graduated after a 60-reception season, and Marques Colston, who will miss the 2004 season with a shoulder injury after a 51-catch year in Hofstra returns just 917 of its 3,006 receiving yards. RETURNING RUSHING STATS: Hofstra returns 616 of its 1,252 rushing yards from Pride record-holder Trevor Dimmie graduated after rushing for 699 yards last year leaving the job for sophomore Terry Crenshaw, who ran for 499 yards in PRESEASON ALL-ATLANTIC 10: Hofstra had two players named to the 2004 All-Atlantic 10 Preseason Football Teams. Junior defensive end Dan Garay and junior linebacker Cole Haley were named to the second team. THE QUARTERBACKS: All three quarterbacks who started games for the Pride last year return in But junior Bobby Seck, who started in both of Hofstra s victories last season, gets the starting nod again in Due to injury, Seck played in just four games last year but completed 60 of 117 passes for 920 yards and six touchdowns. Seck, who got hurt three times last season and missed spring drills with a leg injury, showed what he is capable of with a 496-yard passing performance at Liberty in the 2003 season finale. Sophomore Anton Clarkson, who played in six games and completed 45 of 83 passes for 648 yards, had an outstanding spring season but could not overtake Seck during the preseason camp. Grad student Andrew English saw the most playing time at quarterback last season, appearing in nine games and passing for a team-high 1,438 yards while completing 125 of 227 passes. IRBY LEADS THE RECEIVING CORPS: Graduate student Isaac Irby, who earned a bachelor s degree this summer, will lead the Pride receiving corps this season. Irby, who had 49 catches for 570 yards last year, is expected to see more reception opportunities with the injury to senior Marques Colston. Juniors Devale Ellis and Brian Wolman, and redshirt freshman Charles Sullivan, who replaces Colston, make up the starting receiver group. RUNNING BACKS DEEP IN TALENT: Pride Coach Joe Gardi believes what his running backs lack in experience, they will make up for in talent and depth. Sophomore Terry Crenshaw gets the starting job after rushing for 499 yards last year. Crenshaw led the Pride in rushing in three games last year including an 11-carry for 82-yard contest against Maine He will be pushed by redshirt-freshman Kory Compson-Parrish and freshmen Greg Vineyard and Kareem Huggins. O-LINE LOOKS TO REBOUND: Despite a starter leaving the team at the start of camp and a second getting hurt in camp, the Pride offensive line will be looking to erase the memory of the 2003 season in which opponents recorded 38 sacks last year. Senior center Pat O Brien, who may miss the season opener with a leg injury, anchors the offensive line and is the only senior on the two-deep. Juniors Willie Colon and Tom McHugh, and sophomore Jed Prisby give the Pride some more experience on the line. THE DEFENSIVE LINE: The Pride defense will utilize both the 3-4 and 4-3 formations in In either set, there will be returning starters at each spot. Senior tackle Mickey Keene (35 tackles) is the only senior on the two-deep. Junior Ed Greene (33 tackles) and freshman Shemiah LeGrande will aid Keene. Juniors Dan Garay, who led the Atlantic 10 linemen in tackles last year with 72, and Stephen Bowen, who posted 49 tackles, return to starting roles on the ends. LINEBACKERS: Junior linebacker Cole Haley, who led the team in tackles last season, returns to a starting role to lead the Pride defense. Haley, who posted 101 tackles in 2003, has been named to the 2004 All-Atlantic 10 Preseason Team. Last year, he posted 10 tackles at Rhode Island and at William and Mary, nine tackles against the Blue Hens of Delaware, and eight tackles against Northeastern and New Hampshire. Haley also tallied 84 tackles as a freshman in Gian Villante, who was one of the best surprises of the 2003 season for Hofstra as a freshman, finished fifth on the team in tackles with 77 despite missing two games with a back injury. Villante posted a career-high 11 tackles against James Madison, Northeastern and New Hampshire. Senior Bill Hambrecht returns to a starting role in 2004 after missing last season with a back injury. Hambrecht posted 84 tackles in 2002 for the Pride. THE SECONDARY: The secondary is the most experienced group with two seniors in cornerback Le Var Starr and safety Michael Momo-three if you include nickelback James Glee-returning. Starr started eight games and posted 29 tackles before suffering a knee injury. Junior corner Prentice James started 10 games and posted 44 tackles. Glee started eight games at safety and four at corner and posted 73 stops. Momo started the last four games of 2003 and posted 57 tackles on the season. The only first time starter in the secondary is junior safety Sherief Little, who played in all 12 games last year and recorded 14 tackles. JUST FOR KICKS: The Pride will have two seniors starting at kicker and punter this season. Kicker Chris Onorato returns to his starting role after hitting 15 of 22 field goals last year and 35 of 58 in his career. He
4 booted three field goals in a contest three times last season. After a fierce competition during camp, senior Joe Nolan has won back his starting punting job after losing it due to an injury last season. Nolan averaged 40.6 yards per punt in 2002 but suffered a leg injury before the 2003 season and missed the entire year, Niall Duggan stepped in and averaged 38.9 yards per punt last season while setting the school record for most punts and most punting yards in a season.
